Firedoglake's Jane Hamsher Discusses Health Care Reform on MSNBC
By Heather Friday Jul 10, 2009 1:00pm
Jane Hamsher takes on Townhall wingnut Jillian Bandes on MSNBC over health care reform. The argument got personal when Jane talked about what she's had to put up with as a sixteen year cancer survivor.
Hamsher: Seventy six percent of the American public want a public plan, and as a sixteen year cancer survivor myself, I really find it offensive that people try and drag others into this and say that somehow our system that we have right now represents the fifty million people who are uninsured, or that it does anything..
Bandes: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa...
Hamsher:...superior for people like me, for people like me who've had to be at the mercy of bureaucrats....
Bandes: I'm sorry I'm not a cancer survivor, but that doesn't mean I can't criticize the public plan.
Hamsher:...and insurance companies that won't pay your bills. Yeah, well I suppose you are, but you don't know what you're talking about.
[.....]
Hamsher: The people in this country who have to go and face bureaucrats who will not pay their bills and have to face financial ruin in order to get themselves treated, is criminal. Basic health care access should be a basic human right in America. We spend two trillion dollars on the banks last year....
Bandes: Should food be a basic human right?
Hamsher:....and now we're talking about that we cannot... Do you have any, do you have any pride whatsoever? Do you have any shame when you go out there and you say this kind of stuff, and when you interrupt people when they're trying to talk about their own personal experience?
Obviously Jane, she doesn't or she wouldn't be shilling for the insurance companies.
Jane's got more over at Firedoglake's Campaign Silo: Health Care: It’s Time To Get Mad and as Think Progress noted, for most of the world, food is considered a basic human right.

Bandes: Should food be a basic human right?
ummm, yes?
I watched it live also, dumbstruck.
What can you say in response to someone that asks you that accusingly, self righteously, like it's a gotcha question?
Hamsher lost her cool on that one and didn't have the best response. I guess she was resisting shouting the expletives that must have automatically come to mind.
18,000 children in the world die of hunger each day. If Bandes had to watch just one of them die, the answer to that question would be obvious even to her.
That is why "hunger" is used as an indicator of human development for any society. And that is why things like welfare (food stamps anyone) were created for.
In any case, with libertarian compassion who needs a living hell on earth?
BTW, this Bandes lady seems to have been an editing contributor to a libertarian/conservative rag named "doublethink online" and if you read the contents of it, it is obvious that the whole point of the term coined by Orwell flew over their feeble little minds. Which adds further validation to my theory that conservatives read 1984 as the sequel for Atlas Shrugged, not a dystopian novel.
The GOP needs to rename itself the AWE - Americans Without Empathy. More and more the Republican party is represented by this kind of person who clearly has no ability to even consider the humanity of their stances. Her comeback about food says it all, as does her non-answer about the uninsured. If it's "only" 20 million, that makes it okay? It's amazing what a lack of a human soul these people have. They're beyond redemption.
It removes both insurance and politics out of the whole picture.
has any inkling of what 'The Seattle Option' is? While I skipped through some of the crap in the vid, I never heard anything about a 'Seattle Option.'
For me, the 'Seattle Option' was waiting til I was passing blood and going to the ER at Harborview.
or going to the Franciscans and giving them a false name.
Bandes is not right or human
...on Terminator Salvation. They felt no pity. No pain. No fear. Something unstoppable.
republicanism is a mental illness!
NOT COVERED - PRE EXISTING ILLNESS
.
gonbald and Tyler, you are right on!
and I was absolutely FLOORED by this Bandes woman. How unprofessional can you be and Jane was quick to put her in her place.
I knew it was only a matter of hours before it was up on c & L.
I would love to stand in line behind people like Ms. Bandes on Judgement Day! I personally would like to hear her and the other republicans respond to the following question, asked by God.
Is food a basic Human Right?
Just to see the look on her face when he asks that specific question. What's with these people and their "holier than thou" attitudes?
Btw; Cynthia Davis, fall in line with Ms. Bandes on Judgement Day.
Well duh,
if food was limited to only speialists able to make it, and a few corporations were monopolizing it, in order to bankrupt and virtually make economic slaves of people, and then deny people the food they have paid for in advance, hoping that you starve to death before getting your claim through the courts, like they do with your healthcare then hell yeah, I'd be all in favor of government intervention in the food markets.
Then again, I am a social democrat sitting up here in Norway, which is tantamount to a communist well to the left of Lenin it seems these days.
country. It is called Monsanto.
Comrad Norse, welcome.

From this and what I saw of Bandes this morning on Washington Journal (c-span) she's....how shall I say this? She's a smart aleck and it all seems to be about her. One man called in and asked how do you get the press' attention. He asked do we have to woo them? Her response was, I don't want anyone to woo me. As if she were some big time journalist. When she was asked about her creds, she had very little to offer.
In this video when Jane talked about her own experience, Bandes should have just let that lay there rather than get snide about it. When she gets snide, she seems to also get stupid. Asking if food should be a basic human right shows she is a tit for tat idiot instead of a good debater.
... amazing how these people can say the most inhumane and cruel opinions with the biggest of smiles.
This morning when a caller was asking a question Bandes was looking at herself in the monitor and smiling. Vain? Seemed like it. I think her gig is to come off as being a tough cookie, in a Palin sort of way.
but I'll bet that lil sourthern belle, Jillian, hasn't spent many days going hungry or doing without health care.
I don't think you can grow up poor, experience hunger and have no insurance (only ever seeing a doctor when it was an absolute emergency) and be a cold hearted person. I just don't think you can.
She seemed to me more like a spoiled little brat all grown up.

Perfect! Plus I had forgotten all about that song. I still like it. Thanks!
That song plays in my head every time I hear certain phrases like, 'smile in your face'.
who at least thought the starving should eat cake. Not this one.
by judging her hairdo. All she needs is a matching Austrian accent, and voila... she's almost there!
Change You Can Believe In thing was made up so that “progressives” would feel justified in supporting a corporate politician that resembles the “WW I-era Ivy league intellectual and imperial gangster Woodrow Wilson on many points, the issue of U.S. global hegemony first and foremost.”
.
Ann Coulter's protege? Understudy? Little sister?
Keeps on cranking them out
Big eyes big teeth big hair
Ready to breed with the nearest clown
And that is the worst part, and why I STILL hate boorish, braying bullies:
they are OUT there. BREEDING more of these little shits. It's friggin' child abuse, I tell you.
...people who can ask "Should food be a basic human right?" and then sit smugly like they just "nailed" somebody needs a psychiatric evaluation. OF COURSE FOOD IS A BASIC RIGHT; otherwise, we have no business calling ourselves a society. And if corporations were conspiring to inflate the cost of food, and systematically denying food to certain citizens of this country, there would be overwhelming outrage.
This 20-something talking head does not understand the concept of "human rights." If food was NOT a human right, we could DENY it to prisoners or even public school students.
.
Say it with a nasal tone and a shit-eating grin:
"Should food be a basic human right?", is a current GOP talking point. I heard some idiot running this same exact talking point the other day on Thom Hartmann's radio show.
Bunch of swine. All they have is derision and lies. Shame that it will always work on the 28 Percenters, but there it is.
anything else. That is not meant to be an excuse for her, just an explanation for her ignorance and arrogance. God help us. Never mind. I forgot that he is on their side.
these assholes who have everything they could possibly need to survive and more go out of their way to get even more at the expense of others not having any......like they believe that people want to sit around in poverty all day and milks off the system. whatever happened to them trusting the american people to make the right decisions................fuckers
Now, that's what we need. You go, Jane. Did you see that bitch interupt her.........uh, like I'm soooooooory I'm not a cancer survivor, ummmmm, as if......blah, blah, blah. Just another example of the Young Republikcon whores, who would sell out mankind, if they could, to suck the corporate tit. Mom and Dad must be so proud of you, you Banshee.
Jane Hamsher and her Firedoglake site, thanks for all you do!!!!
Jane is great. I thought she did very well against that smug little bitch.
I read your comment on the other thread about your sister's death. My heartfelt condolences to you, ServeSomebody.
Trouble is, this is the kind of thing that gets a liberal more or less blacklisted from TV. You can be an absolute raving piece of shit and get lots of airtime if you're a conservative, but liberals need to know their place.
IMHO, we first need to define 'food'. Hopefully, we mean affordable, safe, nutritious sustenance, not stuff like this that I lifted from the comments at Bill Moyers blog.
Look at all the contamination of the food supply in just the last few years. Peanut Butter, Spinach, Beef, Ice Cream, Cookie Dough, the list goes on and on. (Don't forget pet food, too)
Yes, food is a basic human right, but don't we also have the right to good food? Common sense dictates that if we all had healthy diets, basic, preventative health care would be less of an issue in this country.
but I figured it out:
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/vv219/keep...
Sorry about that.
Strange it worked in preview.....
I bet you could get a simple mammogram for what that perm cost.
It's not attractive either, Jillian. It's 2009 now, not 1988.
Yes, you can see she's been to the Repuke grooming/charm school. Her hair is total yuppie/Raygun 80's era. Just get a youngish whore who will simile and lie, in order to keep the Working Class Heroes down......ain't gonna work this time.
Did you mean "smile and lie"?
Doesn't matter: I sort of like "simile and lie".
:)
She's trying to be a trend setter. Sadly the trend was set before she was born.
This from the same group of people who believe "Greed is Good" and "I got Mine, Screw the rest". Amazing how they have been able to wrap themselves in patriotism and so called family values when it's clear they have neither.

Do you have to be mean and cold hearted to be a female republican commentator? I mean look at the ones they already have and now they have this one in training. How long before she shows up on Beck and BillO on a regular basis? It's like they are all vying to see who can be the meanest and cruelest and often times, the stupidest.
that likes to git in peoples faces. As long as it's not face to face.

This is beautiful.......just beautiful. UNC, way to go for getting rid of this Banshee. Thanks for the link, burpster.
have an entry for Corporate Whore!?
What a bitch. "Should food be a human right?". Unbelievable. The answer is overwhelmingly yes. Moron.
get squeezed out of anyway?
Typical con response
Behaves like a typical Republican when they know that they are WRONG... they interrupt other people. It's rude, they know it and they don't care. They are true Reagan Republicans. Reagan led the campaign and the cheers for the "me" and "all about me" republicans and democrats. These people weaken our nation and jeopardize our security.
Oooh look at me I'm on TV and I'm Famous!! Despite the fact I couldn't talk myself out of a paper bag on my own.
It's all about money.
Jill Banshee loves to see herself on da teevee....she's a real live famous person.....NOT. She was fired from UNC's paper for good reason. Funny, if she's so proud of her article, WHY SCRUB IT FROM THE NET??? If she didn't have a say in that, WHY NOT JUST POST IT ON YOUR OWN SITE.....OR SOME RIGHT WING SITE???
Right, just spew shit, and talk smack, then shove it down the memory hole? PIG, WITH AN UGLY, 80's PERM.
Was she really insinuating the food should should not be a basic right?I'm not sure I have that correct. I meant nobody would come on national TV and actually say that... would they?????
To imply that having food is not a basic right is tantamount to saying there's no such thing as human rights.
Next on the agenda: how can we charge people for air?
She is also anti choice as well. She probably doesn't care about that because she hates to fuck.
Ask her Mom.
A caller asked her this morning if she was for smaller govt, how could she support any anti abortion laws. She came back with some verbal mess about it had nothing to do with a woman's rights if abortions were outlawed. I know I know, it made zero sense to me too
These assholes try to steer the debate to the uninsured only. What about the UNDERINSURRED?? I don't want an insurance company to come between me and my doctor. It takes me well over a month to get an MRI. It takes me two months to see a specialist. It takes a year to force the insurance company to pay what they should. These assholes are the ones who have the Cadillac coverage and think that food is a luxury. They will rot in hell.
It depends on who ya work for.
Cap'n 'Roo,
None of these idiots has any interest in engaging in a real debate with facts and sensible answers to problems. That's clear from the outset whenever you watch any of this ilk. You ask the straight questions and ask them to defend their views and you NEVER get a straight answer. Their positions are indefensible to most sensible people, and they're generally cold and heartless, so they dodge and weave and lie and just keep plowing ahead with their agenda.
It doesn't piss me off that such people exist, because we all know they do - always have and always will. What pisses off is that these TV shows delight in inviting these morons on to spew their nonsense and engage in a style of combat that drags everyone down into the gutter with them, including the viewer.
for-profit, bonus-driven cubicle farmers coming between us and our medicos, but change that to government, and it's all Horrors!
Look at the difference in Jane's demeanor and Bandes. Jane is calm and gets her point across. Bandes is eratic and tries to be clever. I think that is a good example of the difference in dems and repubs.
Jill is just starting. I think she will actually learn and get better at shilling against her own best interests.
shot getting out of her car for shopping to advance any further with her crowd.
Her behavior tells me she thinks she's ready for the big leagues right now.
The truth makes the posturing demagogue look foolish. The truth is bad for big business.
So 20 million uninsured Americans is okay with Bandes. Wonder is she feels the same way about 20 million Americans without food.
Apparently she does because she asked the question.
Try upper 40s, approaching 50 million people.
We have more uninsured people in this country, that Canada has citizens.
Access to same is not a basic human right. So as long as she doesn't have to step over the starving on her way to the disco, I'm sure it's not a prob!
.
Exactly!!!
It's kill or be killed
...with chunky-cheeked MO legislator Cynthia "hunger is a great motivator" Davis in a cell for a week, and limit them to a diet that the underfed 80% of the world population subsists on, and see if they still think "food is not a human option"....HEH!
seems to be a standard "accessory" to these wingnut women.
praying to god to give her strength to cope with the attacks from those liberals who want to give food and health care to those poor people, who are poor because god hates them obviously...
Please save me from the likes of Jillian Bandshee.
Speaking of coping...think I'll check out now, and head out to the deck with a glass of my fave CA. Pinot Noir.
It's been a long day, but C&L and most of those who comment here, are a big morale booster. Had my sister not passed, broke from medical bills for cancer, she'd be joining me right now.
Just want to say that I hope you all have a beautiful weekend, and your loved ones are well.
Hugs and Peace,
ServeSombody.....aka..BrokenArrow
I hope there are better days for you ahead.
It's been two months, and I'm doing okay. Came from an Irish Catholic gang of eleven, being eighth in birth order, I've had my share of losses in the past few years, but also many blessings. Still, I do miss my peeps a lot.
Really, I must be going now......love this site, and all of you here.
I'm so sorry about your sister. I shall drink a toast tonight in her honor. Peace and may each day treat you with tenderness.
... and I will be joining in the drinking. But I can only drink wine when it is used to wash down some good food, so we'll be trying some new place tonight.
So cheers.
I can't get over this "Should food be a basic human right?" comment. That is just insane but more than that it says everything yoiu need to know about Republicans. I think that a BIG deal needs to be made about this. Olbermann???? Rachel??? This was while Hamsher was pointing out that banks were given 2
billiontrillion $$$$. This is what this cold person has to say???I did not hear Jillian claim she has a soul.
I agree, and I hope some commentators do pick up on this revealing comment by Bandes.
Well, I do believe that we have a responsibility to ensure that nobody is starving in this country.
Besides, I find it awfully ironic hearing that talking point from Republicans. I wonder what Jillian's position was on removing Terry Shaivo's feeding tube. (And how much did that fiasco cost taxpayers?)
Money well spent.
Hmmm... Apparently their base's brain attrophied to the size of a lemon. That sounds about right.
Her hair reminds me of the wigs the men used to wear in Endland a long time ago. At least I think they were wigs. You could easily paste one their faces over hers and her hairdo would fit the era perfectly.
email Jillian Bandes here:
http://townhall.com/columnists/JillianBandes
I don't want to get into a pissing match with her. Hell, I want to forget she exists.
at the moment. I am shocked by this news.
That's a scathingly brillant idea!!! Let's do.
Maybe someone here who is into photo shopping will take on the task. I hope so.
Duh, I didn't edit that comment in time. It should read England, not Endland. I don't even know where Endland is.
Endland is a desolate waste, poisoned by the fallen god and the undead horrors that feed upon him.
I wonder if I can use my frequent flier miles to get there?
Well who knew. Wonder what kind of hairdo one would wear there?
Maybe near the hinderland?
Bandes: Should food be a basic human right?
Let's put this another way: ACCESS to food should be a basic human right. Just as access to health care should be. The idea that either of things is unaffordable is simply unacceptable.
Wouldn't it be nice to see all these radical conservatives destitute and trying to find basic food and health care?
In a perfect world, that would happen.
I'll tell you what swayed my wingnut brother (who is still a wingnut btw):
Me getting cancer w/ no insurance.
My son and I recently qualified for food stamps or here in Texas, it's called the Lone Star Card. We observed that the quality of food we eat has greatly improved as we use this card. Only basic food, produce, meat can be purchased using this card. What a novel idea: government provides healthy food and keeps the cost of healthcare down because people eat healthy.
Well said Jane Hamsher! Great to see someone who is prepared to be outspoken on this issue.
She was just getting on a roll before Shuster interrupted her, he should have let her finish making her point.
What was Bandes saying about Big Pharma? Was she saying that Big Pharma was behind the money that put the ads out against Blanche Lincoln?
I wish Jane would've corrected that if that's what Ms. Jillian said. That money came from me and others in Blue America, and I'm far from Big Pharma.
But what would the tar heel care about accuracy?
I think Jane did a great job, but Bandes was just spewing so much nonsense that it is impossible to counter everything.
This is more smoke and mirrors, and a sneaky way to influence public opinion. I think that Big Pharma is shooting for mandatory Medicare Part D coverage for all people. This will go along with the mandatory health insurance that we all will be forced to buy if the insurance company gets their way with this issue. Either way it goes, Big Pharma could come out on top. Clever, aren't they?
Ed just showed this clip on the Ed Show but he didn't show it until the part where Bandes talked about food. He should have.
Are the reason why the republican ship is sinking. Is food a human right? YES, and if and when the market system breaks we will replace it. Shitheads.
From another poster I forget where:
**** AN OPEN LETTER TO THE US CONGRESS ****
---- Heed this or enjoy your last term in US Congress ----
We, the people, DEMAND that Single Payer be included in whatever Health Care Reform legislation you pass. We will be watching your actions closely, so, keep the following in mind before casting your vote. Make it count for all Americans :-
Health Care Reform is MEANINGLESS if:
1. There is no Public Option ( No Co-ops, No Triggers ).
2. Everybody is not covered. (Without Exception)
3. Coverage can be denied based on "Pre-existing" conditions.
4. It does not contain Patients' Rights.
5. Strict Regulations are not imposed on insurance plans.
6. Affordability and costs to consumers, as well as providers, are not addressed.
7. Accessibility, delivery and quality are not maintained and/or improved.
8. There's NO oversight from medical, financial and nat.ional sec.urity persp.ectives.
9. Profit motive is NOT REMOVED.
10. Innovation, Research guidelines and funding are not addressed.
Health Care For Patients, NOT For Profit because Health Care For Profit is Health Care DENIED.
Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should an insurance middleman come between a patient and his/her doctor - especially, if the insurance middleman stands to gain from it.
IT'S A CONFLICT OF INTEREST.
Insurance has no business being in Health Care. They contribute nothing towards it. NOTHING!
Single Payer For All Now! ( S*P*F*A*N ) -*-*- Everybody IN, Nobody OUT.
IT'S THE ONLY RIGHT CHOICE - there's NO EXCUSE for anything else.
