Dick Durbin takes Tom Coburn to task for his remarks earlier on the Senate floor where he said the American people should pray that somebody can't make the vote tonight.

Durbin: This statement troubles me, and I’m trying to reach him come back to the floor and explain exactly what he meant about a senator being unable to make the vote tonight.

Durbin also went after Coburn and his cohorts and their PrayerCast where they were praying for the health care bill to fail and said that's their right, but asking Americans to pray for something to happen to another member of the Senate was going to far. Of course cowardly Coburn did not respond to Durbin.

Here are Coburn's earlier remarks and Dick Durbin initially asking Coburn to return to the Senate floor to respond.

christians pray for? I know a guy that said he lost a part off his motorcycle. He said I prayed to the lord to let me find that part and I went back the way I came and there it laid.
I guess I just don't understand what some people think is important.

prayers ranging from "Lord, help me find my keys" (I know this because my godmother instructed me to do that when I lost mine) to "God, please start Armageddon already"...

Believe me, Tom Coburn, believe me.

my Grandfather's first wife was unhappy with him, so she was trying a black magic curse on him to well, bump him off and let her be a widow. As you can imagine, it failed, otherwise I wouldn't be typing this. The spell called for her to burn something and let the smoke go in one direction, but instead a wind blew it back towards her. Shortly after that she fell ill and died. A little South Texas brujeria there for ya...

These religious wrongs should be on their knees praying that the proverbial smoke isn't blown back in their direction.

So...Dick Cheney still being alive is proof that there is no power in prayer?

is proof evil is a force of nature.

I'm sure Jesus would be opposed to the bill too.

Because given the resources of the United States of America there is no way known that the man described in the Gospels would not want a universal single-payer system.

Clavis's picture

Republicans are assholes. What did you expect?

By the way, Coburn, nice hair.

for whatever we want? It'd be so simple, according to idiots like Coburn.

if senator coburn wasn't there, i would suspect that he is counseling one of his fellow c-street neofascists as to how to handle, yet another, c-street sexual escapade

I will merely wish on Coburn a hemorrhoidal flare up of such epic proportions as will be cited in medical literature for years to come with awe and fear.

Oh hell...I want his anus to explode and release a torrent of locusts on his side of the aisle.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

Backward flying porcupines would be even better.

If we're praying for stuff ;)

..that some day he'll squat on the toilet to pinch one out and simply disappear - leaving nothing but an asshole with a full head of hair inside an expensive suit.

I'm seriously considering sending him some bran.

for a hemorrhoid to get hemorrhoids?

When I see the likes of Dick Durbin on one side of the aisle, and Tom Coburn on the other, it becomes clear to me why the republic is in the shape that it's in.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

Durbin and Coburn are merely following their respective party lines: if you're a Republican, you take every opportunity to ruthlessly assume the worst about Democrats and liberals, including accusing them openly of wanting to destroy all our freedoms and take down the country. If, on the other hand, you're a Democrat, you waffle and qualify and make even-handed comments where you offer the most generous possible interpretation of the Republican attacks about which you're being asked to respond.

Republican: "My liberal opponent wants to eat babies!"
Democrat: "I'm sure my respectable opponent doesn't mean that."
Republican: "I do! You want to eat babies *and* murder my grandma!"
Democrat: "I think the important thing is to find a way to work together."
Republican: "I'll never work with you -- you give sexual favors to terrorists!"
Democrat: "Now, listen, I think my Republican opponent and I agree on a lot of issues; we just have different ideas as to how to get there."
Republican: "Your mother!"

And so on... funny how the only people who benefit from this kind of merry-go-round are corporate CEOs...

SadButTrue's picture

Well, almost perfect. Now, if that could be done with sock puppets...

"In theory theory and practice are alike. In practice they are very different."

It already is. Only it's with meat puppets.

Unfortunately, the Democratic response has often been as meek as you parody here, but the alternative is not to be as unhinged as the Repubs. Liberals need someone who knows how to truly debate these idiots, but I'm afraid we don't see that because the Liberals in the congress are just as uninformed (and bribed) as the Repubs.

Beware of anyone promising a future full of yesterdays.

Clavis's picture

What we need to do is call out the tribalist right-wing authoritarians, but the week, corrupted faux-liberals in Congress are too busy doing the usual DC sausage-making.

In other words, the natural denizen of DC, the sausage-maker, has no natural defenses against the right-wing authoritarian zealot.

With everything going on, this is what they have to spend time bitching about?! Who gives a flying rat fuck if some rube from Oklahomey wants everyone to "preyy" that some Senators don't make the vote?

Get off your ass Durbin and do something for the people who elected you.

And Coburn just needs to STFU

offered a tearful apology on the Senate floor for comparing the alleged abuse of prisoners by American troops to techniques used by the Nazis, the Soviets and the Khmer Rouge, as he sought to quell a frenzy of Republican-led criticism.

"more than most people, a senator lives by his words" but that "occasionally words will fail us and occasionally we will fail words." Choking up, he said: "Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line. To them, I extend my heartfelt apologies."

photon_s feather's picture

other Democratic 'leaders' didn't have to exert one helluva lot of pressure on him to get him to do that. We are talking tears of absolute frustration.

Turn the Bluegrass Blue's picture

I'll keep praying that Congress opens a full-scale investigation into the C Street cult. Or better yet, I guess I could call my local representative and ask about that. See, it's this new alternative to praying I've heard about. It's called "actually doing stuff."

http://durbin.senate.gov/contact.cfm

Thank you so much for asking Sen. Coburn to explain his remark about Americans praying for a senator to not make it to the vote, and for the defeat of health-care reform. Calling on a deity or any supernatural entity to cause harm to another is nothing less than black magic.

willie's picture

I called Coburn's office to see if he put out a statement and the gentleman on Dr. Coburn's end was a little bit hissy and pissy and said "if anyone should put out a statement it should be durbin for his sick projections." he then went on to say that if i thought anything more than someone not making it to the floor because "we've had a blizzard for gods sake" then he feels sorry for me.
I think the clue to me not being the first to call was the audible and heavy sigh right before the Dr. Coburn rep began to speak his greeting.

Clavis's picture

Notice how the rep's entire response was a combination of "I feel free to assume the worst about my opponents' motivations" and "How are you assume anything but the best about my motivations?!" Pure hypocrisy.

He's no gentleman.

To pass this bill? What planet do these guys live on?

Foreclosures, layoffs, downward wage spiral, cost of living inflation, credit cut off, etc, etc . .

Hey everyone can afford $600-$1000 a month for Health Insurance this is America! That's why we had an emergency session to make sure you can keep getting unemployment benefits!

Obviously if praying for things really worked, we wouldn't need healthcare insurance much less healthcare insurance reform.

What the hell ? It is absolute insanity that these guys hold high office and are governing the country ! INSANE ! Are the people who vote in their states completely outta their minds ? This is mind boggling .Man , this country is , we are , in deep shit .

"The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all."

for his prostate cancer and more recently a heart condition - isn't he the one that prays away the maladies of all those folks that watch him on tee vee and send him money? But for his own health he turned to science...wonder if he had health coverage!

I've seen some stuff, man. And some thangs...

... he prayed for the surgeon to successfully perform the procedure, see! it works!!!

Well of course. Pat's dumb, but not dumb enough to believe his own pray-for-a-miracle faith healing. Not when his own life is on the line.

You gotta feel for these "demonic" xristians who mock prayer by praying for something notibly "evil", knowing it is not a prayer but a "curse" in their belief system. It's a pity. Because they indulge in the Ronald666WilsonReagan ( followers of the "beast" ,making them part of revelations curse on the new world) they will be self-harmed by the power of that curse because of their lack of love when instigating it. Dumb asses! I just love how GOD works...Too bad they are separated from GOD with all their "in vain" nonsense. Let it be. It will work on itself. They pray for failure, it will be theirs they will receive.

pissed off patricia's picture

Well, someone should claim they prayed to their god that all the Senators made it to the vote. That way they make Coburn's prayers seem like they went to the wrong god.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Intercessory prayer? Coburn? How's that workin out? Leave religion at the door, do your job and God will do his....

BTW an unproven theory. Perhaps it speaks volumes of many of this ilk.

and would be less burdensome on everyone. single payer is just what he would be for. not enriching insurance companies any more than already they are. in this case they'd be the 'moneylenders' that Jesus railed against. they are in it for profit, and thats it. and this bill ultimately is meant to help people. but Coburn wants folks to pray for its defeat. not very Christian of him from what i can see.

Old Billy's picture

Dana Milbank says all of this "lack of comity" is Sheldon Whitehouse's fault for complaining about mob violence from the right wing in August. Seems Whitehouse said that mob violence can get out of hand and Republicans were playing with fire. He referenced the French revolution, Kristalnacht, and lynchings in the south - which was way "over the line" according to Milbank. Clearly Coburn had to pray for something to befall Byrd, right Dana?

Dahgrostabph-r-i's picture

Is there any question that these asshole republicans do not follow the word of Christ?

Anybody that believes these are good christians is an outright fool. Who would Christ wish ill upon? - Screw the repugs, why would anybody be so shallow and/or ignorant to vote for these people?

psaltseller's picture

(or any other Messiah of your choice), don't expect to see a lot of him for the first few years. He'll be too busy going around, grabbing people like Colburn and the C Street Family by the lapels and yelling "I never said that!!! And even if I had, there's no way I could have meant it like THAT!!!"

fitley's picture

Tom Coburn is vile human trash of the lowest order. How can anybody not be sickened by his mere presence in a room.

I know I should not say this but i would pay a good amount of money to watch McConnell stroke out.

psaltseller's picture

.....and I'll say it again. In America, "Conservative" and Christian" are mutually exclusive.

Frankly, I can't find anything in any of the Abrahamic Religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Ba'hai, and assorted splinter sects) that is consistent with the mendacious, defamatory, mean-spirited strategy practiced by the Republic Party.

psaltseller's picture
