I just got around to going back for this clip but it's worth sharing. Jon Stewart smacks down John Sununu for Republican hypocrisy over their sudden new found religion on deficits now that it's for domestic spending and trying to get our economy out of a free fall, not wanting to regulate industry as well as their lack of concern for our future generations paying back what the occupation in Iraq and the Bush tax cuts have added to the deficit.

John Amato:

Stewart also asks Sununu if Judd Gregg just learned that he was a conservative? Wouldn't he have known that two weeks ago?

And then Jon talks about how the Bush tax cuts killed the Fed budget and, well...you know...

Stewart: I'm not an economist, but let's say I start out with a surplus and I say lets have a tax cut to stimulate the economy, lets make it 1.2 trillion dollars and that surplus turns into a deficit. Why would I at that point go, hey you know what could fix that? A tax cut.

Heather: As much as the villagers are trying to protect the Republicans over their Bush behavior, the only ones that are left to expose them are the late night comedy/talk show battles as of late. Whether anyone thinks SNL's skit of the Republican leadership was funny or not, which I actually didn't think was all that funny, doesn't really matter and that was not what I was trying to convey by posting it.

I posted it because like this clip, their two faced concern over how our tax payer dollars are spent is being made a mockery of as it should be. It's just sad that our MSM is so corrupted they're not reflecting how they should be scorned for their actions and it's taking our comedians to call them out for it, whether anyone thinks they are funny or not.

Do the Repubs actually have to have this explained to them?

They are Repukes and do not live in the same reality as the rest of us. But I wish every talking head would say the same thing when they bring up this bullshit. Where and what were "YOU" doing when Bush was sinking the country deeper and deeper into deficit during his two terms. These bastards should be tarred and feathered for such bald faced hypocisy.

"Where and what were "YOU" doing when Bush was sinking the country deeper and deeper into deficit during his two terms."

Amen

more bizarre is that the "elected" officials in the GOP are installed by the Party to get in the way of governance, not to govern, not to make decisions that would benefit the voters. If they vote for a bill that would benefit their voters but contains any kind of tax or govt spending, they are basically voting for the Party to fire them. That's called a conflict of interest, Big Time.

In addition to the comedy shows, on 1600 PA Shuster has a segment called Hypocrisy Watch which is pretty good at busting chops...

No one should feel bad about laughing at the other side, especially when they do the shit they do!

The Republicans and conservatives have split clean away from reason and reality, and TV NEWS has decided to stay on their ship with them. Wolf, i'm looking in your general direction here... I know it's up to the producers but it's very cowardly and disgraceful and dissapointing to see you do this on TV - May TV news reap what they sow!

Tax increases? Because alot of posts point out that "tax cuts don't work" etc, etc. Does that mean tax increases should be taking place, cuz the opposite of taxcuts is tax increases. Does that mean the Dems are now officially the tax and spend party?

What about leaving the tax rates alone for a few years? We would have been much better off as a country with room for "tax cuts" in an economic crisis.

Tax cuts have NEVER brought in monies to the Federal government.

Just saying that alot of left sites are now talking about taxes like it is necessary to increase them. Well, the opposite of stimulus, is a tax increase. I don't know myself. Taxcuts plus spending is probably a better plan than leaving taxes froze. If anything taxes are too high, but what do you do?

NMRon's picture

Contrary to conservative-libertarian conventional wisdom, high tax rates on the highest income levels ($3.2 million plus annual income and corporations) results in high economic growth, high wages and expansion of the middle class. Tax cuts on the other hand always lead to a cycle of economic 'boom, bubble and crash.' Like all of the economic punditry of the last 40+ years, the mantra of tax cuts good, tax increases bad, is bullshit propaganda to get people to support their own enslavement.

on their income, they tend to invest more in their own companies in order to keep more of their money untouched by the government. That has the side effect of actually pumping money back into the real economy.

When they have low tax rates, they tend to keep more of the money in their hands, since the gov won't touch it.

That is what libertarians and repugs don't want people to realize.

Trickle down is a sham. It is a method which relies on the good will of the rich to contribute their fair share.

You don't see any of those rich assholes running a business in which they are A-OK with you paying whatever you feel like for their product or services, do you?

So why have they gotten away with that for the better part of 3 decades?

uglywolf's picture

When the wealthy are subject to low rates of taxation and then hold on to the money, what do they do with it? I don't believe the ultra rich are stuffing mattresses with money though they might out of a perverse sense of humor.
They must be doing something with the wealth that keeps it in circulation, such as buying yachts and jets or gold plated toilets.

Be as you wish to seem

The rich do have a mattress of sorts; it's called a Swiss bank acct. They keep it there for a rainy day. Like when the economy is in meltdown. You know, like the one they just caused. That way they can stay afloat while the rest of us drown in dept.
From what I hear though; I think their mattress just got busted open.

You're saying a tax cut = stimulus?

... party. So if you as a homeowner cut your income and spend even more, you are ... insane. And maybe homeless.
Yet that's just what Bush did, spending and spending and borrowing and borrowing to fund that war in Iraq. And the GOP (and Dems, too, scared to look unpatriotic) let him. No wonder we now are in the worst US deficit in history. No wonder Paul O'Neill resigned as Bush's treasury secretary. Yet as soon as Obama wants to spend so people can WORK and have INCOME, suddenly the GOP is whining about spending. AT HOME. In the USofA. Yet spending in Iraq is somehow more OK?
I love our noble court jesters like Stewart, speaking truth to power.

We should increase taxes on everybody who makes over $1M a year. Let THEM sweat about where their money is going for a change. Payback for all the free bucks they've scarfed with THEIR tax cuts over the last fourty years.

Turnabout is fair play, as they say.

You ain't a tax paying citizen of the US.
But we thank you for your concern.

We people from other nations are concerned because the USA has dragged us into a world recession. Do I need to explain that to you again? Cut the glib crap 22divided.

Fuck you. That is ugly Americanism at it's finest.

To just blame the USA for "dragging" you all down is a bit too easy and simple, don't ya think? I mean, I don't know what country you come from but I'm sure they have a history of exploiting third world countries and corrupt politicians and questionable business practices as well.

Bush Mafia DID INDEED CAUSE THE WORLD FINANCIAL MELTDOWN, DUH!!!!

Please pay no attention to the US crazies who have insulted your intelligence. They are PUKIES with nothing but rancor and bile - they call themselves the 'RELIGIOUS RIGHT' right!! They are suicidal and will smash anyone in their way. I'm an ex-pat. Want nothing to do with the FACIAST US. Meet the new boss, same as the old one.

momsmerrymelodies's picture

A truly bigoted bastard. Where are you from Alaska? or Texass The Bush Mafia, along with Military/Industrial complex PONZIED the whole world. Look at lap-dog Colombia whose gov. has collapsed because of imported PONZI/fascist schemes. YES!!! ugly american, the US is indeed the cause of the world financial meltdown.

'cause I thought they were reading a transcript of rethug meeting minutes. It was way too close to the real dementia and hatred of repuke thought processes. And I've grown to find very little humor in what they've done to this country.

Regulate, regulate, regulate until they holler Mama.

Tax businesses that move offshore to the point that it would be cheaper to stay here.

Transparency: If we bail you out, we must know what you are doing with that money.

Tax all forms of income, not just wages, which would lower the taxes on the working stiff and raise them on the guys who push paper.

Bring back a form of the Fairness Act so that people have at least a educated guess as to what the fuck is really going on.

Label opinion on the tv with big bright red letters and a picture of an asshole.

Couldn't have said it better Jo.

Jo for president? I paticularly like the last part about opinions (although Wolf Blitzer already looks like an asshole, a picture of one would be a nice reminder for desnser citizens; don't believe him.)

If you need funds to pay for essentials, you have a revenue problem
If you need funds to pay for frivolity, you have a spending problem

This was one of the few tense moments with John Stewart.

and I think it was clear that Stewart just had it with this clown.

All he could do is use the same talking point over and over and over, i.e. Fannie May and Freddie Mac.

It is clear these people know their ideology is a failure, but they seem hellbent in taking the whole country down with them.

And glad I was to see it. Every now and then Jon really draws down, and it's delightful to see how easily he runs rings 'round these idiots.

I just read an article on Yahoo about how the banks are charging fees on unemployment benefits.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090219/ap_on_bi_...
When are the banks going to get it and if they don't when is the government finally going to just say enough? We'll start regulating the hell out of you.

And by the way the Republicans in power made this mess and NOBODY is going to forget it. They can splash paint on the story all they want it still looks like bull. Hypocrites all of them.

Jeanne

Stewart's pretty sharp.

It's because they are unintended.

Amusing, then, to watch Sununu argue that thinking harder about regulation will prevent 'unintended consequences'.

Kind of difficult to square the claim that he isn't anti-regulation (or that there was too little regulation in the past) with an argument generally used against any and all regulation (it will always have unforseen, unintended consequences).

Then all the boiler-plate prattle about Fannie and Freddie (not the main sub-prime culprits in any way, shape or form), which conveniently pulls the conversation away from John Stewart's key remark: what about the hypocrisy of it all?

He may not be a Senator any more, but the Republican talking points evidently still come quite naturally.

Paul's picture

It slays me how the conservatives have fixated on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. They are sparing no energy or resource in their campaign to demonize them, as if these were the root of all evil. It's clear by their behavior, whenever they have had enough power to act without restraints, that they don't give a happy damn about financial or fiduciary responsibilities. They have been ideologocally opposed to these two entities from their inception, because they were created with the specific intent of giving a leg up to the underdog, as a tool to help expand the middle class. The Republicans are reflexively against anything that helps the common (wo)man, and they consider it a personal insult when they are denied a chance to rip-off a potential customer through agency of their crony-capitalism banking system. They have always hated fannie and Freddie, because the purpose of these institutions' existence is to create opportunities for those who might, or would probably, never have a chance at improving their lot in life. And then, to go and attempt to peddle a public pretense of pious and upright fiscal responsibility, an aura of faux probity is too much. Hypocrits. Who the fuck does Sununu think he is fooling?

Hey, GOPers: The jig is up. You can fool all of the people some of the time.. but your time for that has passed. Welcome to the opposite swing of the pendulum, assholes: your number is being zeroed in on, and you are finally becoming broadly known for what you are: souless and criminal social parasites. You douchebags are ripe for learning the lesson that you can't talk your way out of the situations you have acted ourselves into. It's going to suck being you.

Heh, heh, hehhhhh.........

Boy does this guy embarass me (I live in New Hampshire and am also an engineer). Thank ever lovin' god that we voted him out last November. To think that someone (another idiot for sure) called him "the smartest guy in the Senate". I'm just speechless what a total moron he is.

Teddy Phufner's picture

This being played out all so disturbingly predictable. Of course people who have devoted their lives to the cause of big corporate multi-national Randian individualistic hawkish elitism are going to fight tooth and nail against moral/anti-moral rationalism. They can do this because it works (see US Republican party, US MSM).
The hope is that using art (ie. eery Orwellian narrative, sardonic Stewart) will help to shed light on the long term plight of human self-destruction , in the mean time, it's nice to enjoy moments of Zen-clarity like this.

No one can defend Repuke spending. For 8 years you got robbed blind and then they gave us a world depression. Now you're bankrupt. You'll get it once your credit rating drops from triple A and your interest rates on the deficit go up, costing all of you even more money.

When have these people ever done what they claim??? Reagan had huge deficits and grew government, as did Bush Sr and Jr.

When have Republicans ever run a surplus.

What they want(and what W was great at) is to line the pockets of their friends and cronies.

You are kidding. I just watched John Stewart tear this idiot a new asshole, and I don't think he had a clue what just happened.

Our legeslators truly are a bunch of f*cking idiots, if this jack ass is an idication.

I am astonished at the sheer balls of these repukes. After eight years of raping and pillaging the American people, they stand up and complain about a few hundred billion to try and save the country THEY destroyed.

If America were not filled with knuckle dragging idiots, these republicans would disguise themselves when out in public to avoid being stoned by the people.

Instead, these OBVIOUS phonies, got 46% of the vote in November.
