SNL: Republican Leadership Plans for Failure on Stimulus Bill, Impeachment and an Attack on the Obama Daughters
By Heather Sunday Feb 15, 2009 11:00am
Saturday Night Live took the GOP leadership to task in this parody for everything from hoping that the stimulus bill and the economy would fail for political gain, to their great leaders in Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, to planning on impeachment hearings already, to an attack on the Obama daughters.
When SNL is using phrases like "politically tone deaf" in their skits and mocking you, all I can say is ruuhh-roohh. Maybe your grand plans aren't working out so well with being the party of "NO" Republicans.
I'm still trying to figure out who was playing who in this skit. For a bit of fun I took my best guess and if anyone thinks I'm wrong feel free to correct me.
Okay no guess here. Dan Akroyd as John "Weepy Eyes" Boehner.
![]()
![]()
No guess here either. Darrell Hammond as Mitch McConnell.
![]()
![]()
And no guess on this third one. Andy Samberg as Eric "GOP Golden Boy" Cantor.

I wasn't so sure of myself on these. Jason Sudeikis as Tom Coburn?
![]()
![]()
Will Forte as David Dreier?
![]()
![]()
Kristen Wiig as Lisa Murkowski??

i mean, we ARE talking about the american taliban here, folks.
also known as the g.reedy o.ld p.erverts.
or the n.eocon o.bstructionist p.artyin' e.lephants.
i'd forgotten that this skit was the subject of the abc roundtable's remarks when i posted this at TP earlier:
i could be mistaken, but earlier in george’s show, i think it was cokie who remarked that comedians were not making jokes about obama himself - because he’s so popular - but plenty about congress (mostly as it conserns this “stimulus”)…
later, every joke featured in ‘the funnies’ was about president obama…
cokie got it wrong again...
you have to remember, it is the Disney channel.
SNL nails it.
All it's missing are Rove's fart jokes and cokie and the other MSN pundits carrying water for these fools.
This is how authoritarians behave when they're pissed off and resentful because the majority of Americans think they're dumb and irrelevant. They've got nowhere left to go but Meaner, Stupider, and More Cornered.
Or, they could get a clue and wake up to the 21st century.
Must Listen to FDR's 1936 Campaign Speech at Madison Square Garden:
"We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace—business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering. They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob. Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred." It is as fresh as daisy today. (Click for Full Audio of This Mesmerizing, "Timely" Speech by FDR.) 2/16
Do you have a link to that audio?

That's a little too close for comfort. Obama is going to be hated by these swine no matter he does. He might as well be forceful.
The sketch has some good lines, but it's the usual SNLish, superficial approach to politics.
It's hard not to get laughs from the amazing stupidity of the GOP. Even SNL can't screw that up!
Akyroyd seems like he's channeling Bob Dole.
It's good to see Akroyd again. He was always able to do the sleazy character so well. Remember Bag-o-Glass?
Good to see Dan Aykroyd again. Kind of weird how he increasingly resembles Nixon. Nobody could impersonate Tricky Dick quite like Dan.
Seeing Aykroyd again makes me sad, because he makes me remember the original SNL, which was so much funnier than this current lot.
sigh.
was Norm MacDonald
went on way too long, and ackroyd's boner sounds exactly like his bob dole...which was funny
Based on the rhetoric of the right wing radio buffoons and their callers, I wouldn't put it past the Republicans to try and overthrow....I mean impeach obama....
And the sad part is I think the Democrats in the House and Senate..would again, fall to their knees, rather than stand up against the Republicans
That the process for impeachment starts in the House of Represenitives? Nancy Pelosi would not impeach bush for his obvious crimes, what leads you to believe any attempt to impeach Obama would go anywhere
Interesting, Aykroyd gave $2,300 in donations to John McCain and then donations to Al Gore and even Al Franken (SNL Alumni).
Maybe his McCain impression is better than his Boener one. He should have come out with a really fake tan. Don't suppose Boner is trying for that bi-racial look, do you?
Apparently the GOP is pissed at Crist for supporting the stimulus package. This is hilarious:
Then, of course, they get violent as all feable minded creatures do when their way of thought is threatened:
GOP, the party of uniform hatred!
The party of violence too. It looks like they really do eat their own.
''They may not be saying it outright, but the Republican delegation is very angry. If they got Charlie Crist in a dark alley, all you'd have left is a tuft of white hair,''
Hunting down Crist and then beating the crap out of him in a dark alley - Yep, that'll prove to the world that Conservatives aren't gay.
''They may not be saying it outright, but the Republican delegation is very angry. If they got Charlie Crist in a dark alley, all you'd have left is a tuft of white hair,''
Personally, that sounds like a direct threat to a sitting Governor. I think it should be investigated.
Crist may want to switch parties for fear of his life.
I think they missed the boat. They could have wrapped up the skit with Boehner answering the phone and stammering, "yes, yes Rush, of course." and giving Rush's marching orders for their campaign against the Obama kids.
You read my mind
This group has a plan the Stimulus bill will be successful, no impeachement of Obama so the last plan get little Sasha Obama. Americans can't allow the cost for snacks for the childrens sleepovers and walking on the White House rugs. Now that's it folks for the GOP.
Beyond Boehner, McConnell and Cantor, I had no idea on the rest.
The real question is, with all of SNL's talented makeup people, why didn't they go after Boehner's fake tan? It's just too obvious a thing to ignore. Sometimes, I swear, the man looks like a giant Oompa Loompa.
the thought of Akroyd in a nice shade of burnt orange would have made it a lot better.
BTW - one of those neo-con pundits was just on Ali Belshi telling how he explained to his young son that the geovernment is stealing from his piggy bank, as his bed time story! Nice move there Dad.
Now i see how normal children can grow up to be neo-con obstructionists.
...It probably holds the polluting of an innocent mind and heart with hate, willful ignorance, bigotry and the like as being the arch-crime. Unforgivable, because it perptuates cycles of evil.
He's a Reagan Youth Republican. He's stealing from the kid's piggy bank and blaming it on the government.
ben stein moaned about the children this morning also in his little commentary on CBS Sunday Morning...
of course, no mention of the trillions before this American investment plan...
oh, and he also stated that he was "poorer" now...
Andy Sandberg was David Vitter and Jason Sudeikis was Cantor. Cantor always wears glasses and SNL normally gets the wardrobe part right.
Edit : Oh wait.. I just listened again and noticed Dan Ackroyd called Andy's character Eric.. so I guess wardrobe did screw up.
Dan Akroyd paid SNL a visit huh? I always like him on the original. The sketch wasn't hilarious by any means, but a little scary. I wonder sometimes if those bozos really think that way. Like I've opined before, it's like the GOP is on a path of self-destruction or is it some kind of weird reversed political strategy . I makes one wonder if they truly do want Obama to fail and the nation with him so the People will vote them back into the majority, even though they are the ones responsible for the unforgivable mess the country is in, in the first place and refuse to take any responsibility for it. Maybe it is planned self-destruction. Then they will just change their name brand like Blackwater did. Some people would fall for it.
it was funny. They are totally ripping on the Republicans inept political strategy and the fact that they think they are still revelant.
It was a good line also when they were arguing about Rush and Hannity and Boehner said heh, we're the party of the big tent. See? Cause they include both Rush AND Hannity. Classic.
And trust me, if Karl Rove was in charge those stupid fucks WOULD be going after the girls. That is truly how stupid they are.
I'm thinking a hybrid Lisa Murkowski/Heather Wilson she-devil.
Not uncanny impressions anywhere, more of a Generic Ol' Party.
More realistically, they'd be roughing Arlen Spector up in the men's room, giving him a swirlie, hoping his hair would fall out again.
I'd like to see a pseudo religious meeting with those same people with the head of Rush appearing like the Wizard of Oz giving them their orders. They could have redone the "Glen Gary" scene with Rush playing the Alec part.
hasn't been funny in years. At least not since the late 80s/early 90s.
god damn, I heard a record 2 laughs through that whole 7 minute catastrophe.
I actually saw BillO (I seem to be seeing way to much O'Shithead these days.. ummmm. Note to self - back off on watching O'Dickhead) say the same thing that Will Forte was saying at 1:45 or so.
it wasn't meant to be funny. I can truly imagine these "adults" already talking about impeaching Barack and getting Sasha.
Oh by the way, cancel Saturday Night Live. They got rid of MadTV, so they can get rid of SNL.
it just wasn't funny.
oh, wait, i'm talking about the entire show, sorry.
I thought he was supposed to be Lindsey Graham. He looks and talks a lot more like Lindsey Graham than ol' Mitch.
Needs to work out again, if he wants to do a Ghostbusters 3...
Again, SNL is out in front of the serious reporters (Gregory, Cokie, Stephaluphagus, etc.) just like with their lampooning of Palin. SNL can smell bullshit; the villagers have no clue.
What a bomb... that skit went over like a screen door in a submarine.
What was that failed attempt at comedy that the conservatives had on the air for a very short stint? Whatever it was called this skit reminded me of that show. Trying desperately to be funny when it wasn't.
You know, times are bad when you can get sick from watching a skit like that because deep down you realize it's not far off from reality.
