Senator Dodd just got his first primary opponent yesterday when virtual unknown Merrick Alpert announced his candidacy at his home. Alpert has no prior experience but apparently has the money to burn. A few hours later he would go on Fox News, where his appearance was more important than a White house press briefing going on at the same time. Alpert's talking points in this clip are straight out of the republican handbook. Earlier in the day he called Chris Dodd "Bambi", and that Dodd was part of the "culture of corruption" in Washington.

Dodd also has to contend with two real republican weasels who are vying for his job in the U.S. Senate.

Should be an interesting 18 months until the election. Or as one CT journalist succinctly put it,

"Somewhere, Glenn Beck and Rob Simmons are smiling."

This guy Alpert has to be an imbecile beginning his campaign as a Democrat on Fox.

ron's picture

Fox heard about his entering the race and sought him out for an interview.

BobD's picture

More like the teabag rallies. Found him, propped him up, and then trotted him out as a real contender.

"fox news Democrat"
The penultimate oxymoron.

Liberal AND Proud's picture

And did anyone consider that a candidate with Republican values might consider running as a Democrat, because the GOP brand is in the crapper.

Can you say Arlen Spector? I knew you could.

LeftandLeft's picture

That defection bullshit is on Arlen, not the Democrats. We will decide if Specter is a Democrat...where's he gonna go?

Excelsior's picture

Unless you live in his state, you don't get to decide anything about Arlen.

Yes. More specifically, it's beginning to look like the republican strategy is to infiltrate the democratic party--and thus far, I'd say they've been pretty successful

We need to get rid of Howdy Doody and those sleazy ties he had with Freddie and Fannie. Not to mention how he got his last home loan.

you're on fire today.

liberalNmoderation's picture

Yes, anyone you care to name in the GOP is WAAAAAAY sleazier than Dodd.

But Alpert is a Dem?

this isn't 1987, or 1996, or even 2003... simply saying that someone 'used to be a small business owner' does not produce the same fellatiating reaction as it once used to. thank fucking god for that.

seriously, who the fuck cares? bush was the mba president, how'd that work out? we have been led down the economic road to ruin by our genitals by an army of 'businessmen'. fuck that. i want elected officials to be well versed in public policy, not supply and demand. i want my senator to be concerned about the populace, not the ROI.

Didn't Tom Delay have a bug extermination small business?

Seems the biggest cockroach got away.

Could the right be using rethugs running as dems as a new strategy? The Republican name is about as toxic as it has ever been, maybe they figure the have a chance at winning if they rebrand themselves as democrats.

That's the oldest young man I've ever seen. He sounds like he's 50 and talk's like he's 70.

And would it break his face to smile? He's has all the charisma of toenail fungus. Somebody go fetch grandpa Alpert his cane.

Abbybwood's picture

Aren't stupid.

Dodd will retain his seat handily for pragmatic reasons. Connecticut doesn't want to lose the seniority Dodd has achieved with some unknown quantity who will end up with a seat on the Libraries and Hall Closets Committee.

This is all much ado about nothing.

... you were saying about CT voters not being stupid?

This is so plainly obvious, and the smirking approval of the faux news team tells me immediately how he'll vote on any enormous-corporation-versus-average-American legislature.

I'll bet I can guess how he feels about women's rights and torture and bible quotes in government buildings, too.

sixandseveneights's picture

Notice what the bleach bottle bimbo shill said "How do you reconcile being a small business owner with being a Democrat?"

Liberal AND Proud's picture

"Well...being a Dem increases my chances of getting laid...I'm not really that small...and what are you doing for dinner tonite?'

"Anyone that makes less than $150K in this country, has no business voting Republican."

They always do that and I don't see enough (any?) people calling them on it on air, during the interview! "A lot of small business owners have been very unhappy with" President Obama's financial program...

Really? Which poll did you use to gather that info of "a lot"? How many is a lot? How did you phrase the question to ascertain that info? Are they perhaps unhappy he isn't doing enough, instead of the "wrong things"? Nice sound bite question there.

BS political agenda from Fox...not a fair and balanced agenda but political agenda...

Liberal AND Proud's picture

maybe so...but the FOX Fox anchors are nice eye candy.

BobD's picture

Civics is long gone. It was phased out as NCLB was phased in. No room for it when you have to study for the test. Actually I think Republicans found out that an educated electorate was harder to fool than an uneducated one. So they took out all the government classes, civics classes, and history is all combined into 2 years instead of the meager 4 we had in the 70-s 80-s.

Heck even School house rock is off the air! No kids sitting around singing, "I'm just a bill, sitting here on Capitol Hill..."

Alpert has no prior experience...

Having no experience in government isn't such a bad thing. If experience were all that mattered, why have elections?

tammanycall's picture

But not the point of the post. scarce was doing a brief breakdown of Alpert as a primary challenger & ONE of the things s/he mentioned was that he had no prior experience in government and he was independently wealthy. Had that been the entirety of the post, you'd have a point. But it wasn't. Alpert also parrots GOP talking points, which not something we're looking for in any Democratic candidate.

bamboozled's picture

Change your party affiliation and run as a Democrat.

Think about it, it's the only way they could ever get elected.

VP505's picture

Another Blue Dog, or is he a republicker posing as a Dem, or just plain out of touch appearing on FAUX NOOZ, hope the good folks in Connecticut see through it.

Sevenfeet's picture

Just because he appeared on Fox News doesn't mean that he's not one of us. I've known Merrick for over 20 years. He spearheaded the Al Gore '88 presidential campaign on our college campus. He's always had a nose for politics and has the drive and the will to make it happen. He's been biding his time waiting for the right moment to enter public life and he feels that this is his time. Senator Dodd would be making a foolish choice not to take his candidacy seriously. I wish him all the best. He will make an awesome Senator.
