Shep Smith Asks How Senators Sleep at Night After Filibustering 9-11 First Responders Bill
Looks like at least one person over at Fox News watched Jon Stewart's segment with 9-11 first responders reacting to the Senate filibuster and decided to let everyone know how they felt about it.
Via Mediaite:
A wonderful moment of pure outrage–and classic television–from Shepard Smith on Fox News Friday afternoon as he and Chris Wallace waited for President Obama’s tax cut signing ceremony.
Discussing the amount of money on “tax cuts for billionaires who don’t need them,” Smith railed against the very same lawmakers who somehow couldn’t get relief passed for 9/11 first responders.
How do they sleep at night after this vote on Ground Zero first responders from 9/11? Are they going to get that done, or are we going to leave these American heroes out there to twist in the wind? [...]
Who’s going to hold these people’s feet to the fire? We’re able to put a 52 story building so far down there at Ground Zero, we’re able to pay for tax cuts for billionaires who don’t need them and it’s not going to stimulate the economy. But we can’t give health care to Ground Zero first responders who ran right into the fire? Went down there to save people? Do people know what this city was like that day? People were walking over bridges they were covered in ash they were running for their lives they were crying their family members were dead. And these people ran to Ground Zero to save people’s lives. And we’re not going to even give them medicine for the illnesses they got down there? It’s disgusting, it’s a national disgrace, it’s a shame and everybody who voted against should have to stand up and account for himself or herself.
I'm glad Smith pointed out what an outrage this is, but like his cohort Peter Johnson Jr., Smith didn't bother to let the viewers know that it's the Republicans blocking the bill.

I guess they were under strict orders not to mention that the filibuster was dependent purely on the GOP. At the end Wallace even makes it sound a bit like it was Pelosi's and the Democrats' fault!
It's the fault of liberals. We expect too much from our President and our Party and put them in positions where they can't be all bipartisany with the GOP.
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

Really? Does anyone here, even Heather, think this guy is being sincere? He's OUTRAGED!!!! FOX viewers may be dumb, but if you believe in Shep's bullshit you ain't that further along,
The man was scripted. It's FOX News, Nobody goes on a rant. Now they can claim the "Fair and Balanced" label. Next 60 Minutes interview Murdoch will be referencing this.
Duh
is intended to be a factual statement
and being outraged are not the same thing. I did not mean to imply that Smith was outraged. I think he went off of Uncle Rupert's script, which you don't find too often at Fox.
I'm just saying I don't believe him. I think he's told to do this every once in a while to make FOX News look fair and balanced. This is FOX News, if anyone does what he does sooner or later theyd find a way to fire him....I'm not attacking anyone here, just don't believe Shep.
is intended to be a factual statement
Smith has always had some wiggle room at Fox. He's the one true newsperson they have.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave after his contract is up, though. Someone (CNN?) would do well to pick him up.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
Frankly, CNN is now so dedicated to the "no labels" middle that I doubt even they would take on Shep after this moment of truth and reason. He will probably have to check out MSNBC if he gets sacked by Fox News. That said, the fact that even Chris Wallace appeared to agree with him suggests Fox News may be dumping one of their editorial/pro-republican positions. That position was so wacko that even they recognized it as a loser after watching the Daily Show last night. At this point I think Fox has more control over conservative political messaging than even the GOP. Perhaps this is good news for the 1st Responders as they might finally get some republican support bullied their way by Fox and Murdoch whatever the reason. As long as they get support I don't care who gives it or why it happens.
It'd be like signing on to crew the Titanic as it was beginning to list, IMHO.
me-oww!
I ran across an article about all the people that are leaving CNN and the list was as long as an arm. Tony Harris was one of them. I always liked Tony. People just don't watch CNN like they used to. I find myself tuning into MSNBC more and more lately. Not that they are any better, I just got tired of CNN sounding more and more like Faux Noise. As far as I'm concerned, it's all corporate news 'entertainment'. If it's on the teevee it's all cherry-picked, filtered and edited anyway or it's just plain propaganda.
Government + the Federal Reserve = organized crime
Shep has been the one Fox news guy who actually has gone against the right wing talking points on many occasions. I think he's about the only good anchor/reporter they have. Of course he could still have a job so Fox can use their fair and balanced claim as you said.
Okay, Shep Smith has been one of the more 'fair and balanced' people on Fox. I remember when he told off Joe the Pundit and was told that, if he knows whats good for him, he'll 'get on board'. So I'll give credit there...
That being said, lets go through the list of why this rant is crap...
1) He didn't mention once that its the GOP senators, not the senate in general, voting this down
2) 'We watch Jon Stewart...whatever' Really? REALLY? You're acting like paying attention to other networks is some kind of act of defiance?
3) Saying that this money is a drop in the bucket compared to what we're spending on other thing, and he mentions tax breaks for Warren Buffet? Well, that's good, because mentioning how much the wars in the Middle East are costing would be verboten.
4) Taking a swing at Nancy Pelosi for not popping up onscreen. The House already passed a bill to provide that money. I understand that taking swings at Pelosi is fun and easy, since she doesn't even need to DO anything, but she's not even a friggin senator!
5) And my favorite (possibly besides their defiant acknowledgement of Jon Stewart), the notion that this bill isn't getting passed because Obama needs to fight with Democrats to get this done.
Seriously guys...fuck you.
No, fuck you.
I'm talking about the guys on Fox, not our gentle readers here at C&L
I meant it for you, I hate your attitude.
OMG Shep Smith isn't super liberal of the year, we musn't praise anything he says or does!
Just can't stand that shit. Shep took 'our' side on this one, give him a break.
But maybe you're right, he is just the worst and we should all hate him.
Constitutionally speaking, that nest of pompous rich white guys(mostly) should be put to sleep permanently via it's dissolution with congress becoming a unicameral body. To make up for the loss of this "Prestigious Deliberative Body" each state should receive an additional two reps. with the caveat that all current senate members would have to stand for election to a seat. The absurdity of this bunch as evidenced by it's ludicrous pronouncements and sham displays of outrage and umbrage has gotten to the point where this once "great" nation can no longer afford their Keystone Cops antics. They are an embarassment to all but the double-digit IQ voters who so whole-heartedly support those imbecilic crackers from the unfortunately ressurgent confederacy. To paraphrase Henry II RE Beckett...Can no one rid us of this meddlesome bunch?
...sleep at night. Stop giving this prettiest turd in the toilet credit. If Smith had any honor he would not be at Fox.

faux outrage
The best part of that Daily show was where he interviewed Huckabee. H constantly tried to shift the blame for Democrats first stating that there should be a "stand alone bill" (Stewart points out it was) and secondly that the Dems shouldn't "play politics" (stewart pointed out they haven't- and should). He was just left sputtering like the fool he is.

Shepard Smith is the only one working for Faux with some integrity.
"supports the troops", "hates the terrorists" and is pro-"family values"? So why should the corollary of supporting those heroes who risked their lives and their families' futures be something that should even need discussion?

Gee, thanks for that factually-challenged, fundamentally-dishonest, certifiably-psychotic perspective, sport.
Shep, ya dumb schmuck, ya... you've been spewin' rupert's rubbish on gop-slop tv for over a decade and you're just now realizin' that those poor bastards have never, ever been anything more than photo op props for il duce giuliani and every other pile of gop slop who lied to 'em them and posed for pictures with 'em before voted to pull the plug on 'em.
Smith has always been one of the few liberal-ish voices on Fox. Allen Colmbes may have been the token liberal, but Smith is an uncredited second.
It may not really be necessary to say straight out that it was the GOP that fillibustered. Even to Fox viewers it should be obvious.
Are you sure? Fox shows Rs with Ds after their name when they do something bad.
far left loon >.<
Well I've seen Shepard Smith seem to go against the party line before, so I still commend him for speaking out.
They said what needs to be said, but I’d be cautious of the motives. Certainly they can be outraged: anyone, even Fox viewers WILL BE outraged about not helping 9/11 responders. In fact not to say anything would look bad. Fox has always been the channel of support the troops and anti big government, However it is misleading in that it appears it has happened because of Nancy Pelosi, and Obama needing to move to the centre, hence insinuating they are to blame.
Far too many dots are unconnected, especially for those that don’t really pay attention, but love to complain about the Kenyan Usurper and Ms, Pelosi, and believe everything Fox says. (I can see they sitting on their sofas muttering damn Obama and damn Pelosi: no further investigation required.)
So they tossed in some crap about Warren Buffet’s tax return. They could have just as easily said Ailes or Murdoch or O’Reilly or anyone that broadcasts at Fox People love to be outraged about that kinda stuff and Fox viewers are no different. Now they can use this clip, in the future, to show how they support the troops and pull some Dem’s mic.
Sometimes people do the right thing, but with the wrong motive.
Feel free to disagree, but I watched it twice and both times it made me uneasy. However, I am glad they did speak up too.

Babies.
Sure, just like what Bill Hicks said about people in marketing.
Sure, it's a drag about the slow deaths of 9/11 responders.
Yet the Lord (and good centrists) know it's not worth the expenditure of Presidential political capital to whine about it.
And at least Bradley Manning remains in isolation at Quantico, per the order of his Commander in Chief, Barack Obama.
show us proof that Obama ordered his detention.
if we had Improved Medicare for All.
Republicans are liars and simply cannot be trusted.
They can't work, their families are suffering loss...however they would not have to fight over med bill pmnts between insurance and workman's comp. The bill would be significantly smaller and could be more precise if medical wasn't part of the problem. Less stressful and more healthful for them, that's for sure.
me-oww!
... we have tax cuts to billionaires we have to fun ;-)
Never lose sight of the fact that Shep is a wolf in sheep's clothes. Never to be trusted. "The guy with the most integrity at Fox" does not say much and if he was at CNN you would hate him a lot more than you hate Wolfie or John king.
BLOCK and BLAME repubes have a simple plan, and the media , by not calling attention to repube blockade, are playing right along.the plan: Block this from passing and Blame the dems for not getting it passed. Then when the new year comes, allow it to pass and claim credit as the only true patriots while painting the dems as oo weak to get it done.
They have options...
They could have nuked the filibuster
They could have actually made the senators USE the filibuster until they dropped.
They could have murdered all the Republican senators and while there is a power vacuum -- put things up for a vote.
Sure, I think the first two are reasonable... but I suppose the third option would have worked using twisted Fox logic.
the "MEDIA?"
all the media is owned/operated by those who would destroy this country for profit and power... ALL OF IT - with exception of outlets like this one on the internet (be prepared for chinese style censoring soon enough - wikileaks will certainly be a catalyst as 9/11 was for the PATRIOT ACT. et.al.)
and even sites such as this where intention is good and pure much of the debate is deluded and based upon faux elementals - such as: our election systems are not being rigged and our president is the most powerful man in the world...more powerful than the shadow gov at dick cheney's pentagon, the wall street billionaire bankers or the neo-cons over at the heritage foundation and PROJECT FOR A NEW AMERICAN CENTURY.
until we open up a dialogue which addresses these harsh realities we're pissing in our own faces and just as delirious as the tea party...
and... time is running out . . . exponentially.

The scum bags have no conscience , they sleep like babies , just fine .
Insanity , it is what it is , there is no understanding it .
The fact is Fox could have replayed the Daily Show segment where Jon Stewart interviewed the First Responders intact and in its entirety as broadcast on national television and you'd never know it was the Republicans filibustering the bill en masse instead of simply "Harry Reid's Democratic Majority Senate" filibustering it.
During that segment Stewart mentions the word "Republicans" only once, only in passing and only in the context of "no Republicans took to the floor to speak on behalf of the First Responders". Really, Jon? Is that all they did?
Meanwhile, I assure you that if the current Senate was majority Republican and it was the Democratic minority filibustering anything regarding benefits for the First Responders, neither Jon Stewart nor Shep Smith would ever have said the word "filibuster" without the qualifier "Democratic" right next to it.
And neither would anyone else on Fox...or ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, et al.
That's just the way it is, folks. That's the way it's always been. As long as the media attracts more eyes and ears to its product by selling bad news, the temptation to protect, promote and help get elected the political party that is most expert at producing the worst news for this country will be too much for them to resist.
he should, but I don’t think there was anything lacking in his hard hitting, solid presentation, of how screwed up things are that this bill was defeated.
And keep in mind that his is a “fake” news comedy show.

Notice who they mention when they talk about the tax bill.
Warren Buffet may be getting a big benefit, but he spoke out against it.
There are dozens of other names they could have dropped.
Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,

Sorry, I don't buy this as an example of Smith's supposed "integrity". He managed to get through a 3 1/2 minute spiel without once mentioning that it was Republicans actually blocking the bill - but did manage to get in a swipe at Pelosi and leave the impression that the legislative gridlock is due to Democratic Party infighting.
This is just typical Fox BS - grandstanding over a populist issue and then using it to smear the wrong people.
would be cool if Warren Buffet use his tax break to help these responder!
I'm reading all the praise of Mr. Smith and wondering why so many are swooned by the man Faux News (sic) uses as a tool for cover. He is NOT special... or Liberal... or with conscience on any level. He is, however, a brilliant con-man.
Let no one forget for a moment who this man works for. MASTERS of misinformation, marketing and propaganda given absolute impunity by a corrupt FCC that, under the Cheney/Bush Regime included nepotistic offspring of TWO SCOTUS members. and not just any two... THE TWO! Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia. The two who attend NEOCON strategy seminars hosted by the Koch brothers. Strategy meetings also attended by non other than Glenn Beck. These summits are where Beck is fed his marching orders and the Uber-Projection-Spin Brainwashing he spews on his programs on a daily basis.
And here are the two blatant points of revelation exposing Mr. Smith's liability:
1.) "Checks to Warren Buffet." Really Shep? Really? One of the few visible billionaires who has made strong, public objections to the remarkably ridiculous and destructive tax cuts for the wealthiest two percent? The only way that statement could have been more coded to redirect blame to toward the left is if he'd said, George Soros.
Why not the Kock Bros. themselves? Why not Rupert Murdoch, Glenn Beck, Hannity or O'reilly? All of whom have labored with enormous passion for those tax cuts. Why not Mr. Smith, himself? Certainly he'll be collecting those checks also... Right, Mr' Smith? Why sir, do you deflect responsibility away from the perps and onto innocents your masters have demonized?
2.) "Who are these people?" (sic) --He did not utter the word "Republican" even once. Jon Stewart certainly did.
You know damn well who they are Sheppy, you ole' stealth babyface you. You know their names and more than likely have their emails, cell numbers and twitter accounts on speed dial.
No sir, Mr. Smith... You, like the network you work for and the political party you serve... are a fraud.

Whenever Wallace isn't speaking, why does he purse his lips into the shape of an asshole? Just wondering.
I think he is only there to this day because of the money. I'm sure he makes only a fraction of what Becky does, given that he's not a paid blowhorn of ridiculousness (which is why Murdoch hired Becky), but it's an amount I am sure he's willing to take. Hell, few other networks are even remotely interested in him, I am sure. So it's not like he has many options. Other than these moments he goes through where he diverges from the typical rhetoric that the other buffoons spew, he has just about no charisma and I think we all know that the networks look for charisma more than anything else anymore.
And isn't he a somewhat significant stockholder in the Faux Snooze hen-house?
a "fraction" of what beck is paid is still the combined income a few hundred (or thousand depending on what the fraction is) comfortable, happy households.

" Looks like at least one person over at Fox News watched Jon Stewart's segment with 9-11 first responders reacting to the Senate filibuster and decided to let everyone know how they felt about it. "
At no point did I hear the word REPUBLICAN, as in REPUBLICAN senators.
In fact the ever weasly Chris Wallace even brought up Warren Buffett as a recipient of the tax cuts, and we all know he is a Democrat. As if the tax cuts for the rich were the 'Senators' fault.
The Fox News audience is the most disinformed and ignorant of all tv audiences, and this segment probably only left them with the idea that the Democrats are against 9/11 responders, unlike of course the patriotic republicans.
So it HAS to work out The free market will take care of EVERYthing. Hannity and Limbaugh say so.

This story came here via Mediaite, a "blog" that some refer to as MediaLite and I refer to as MediaFight.
It's so easy to comment here among my fellow lefties. It's comfortable here where my beliefs are reinforced and I feel a camaraderie of like thinking (for the most part) people.
Over on Mediaite, where I spend most of my time outside of the hours I spend writing The Glenn Beck Review, there are many there who don't agree with us. The comment section is a fight. As much as I get intellectually and morally renewed when I read the posts and comments on Crooks and Liars, I get a much bigger charge taking on the stupidity and ignorance that tries to prevail on MediaFight. Because they cover Beck almost every day, sometimes twice a day, it's my Internet home away from Internet home. (C & L is my refuge from the storm.) Plus, I'm not going to find the people I'm trying to reach here, those who don't yet have an opinion formed about the charlatan, Glenn Beck.
I encourage those of you who enjoy landing a few blows on the jaws of right-wing stupidity to come over there to join me and fight the good media fight. You have to generate your own anchor words there, but it's not that hard.

I posted the following comment:
I wonder who slips Media Matters those Fox memos that show how the management at Fox aims to misinform their viewers of the straight, "news," reporting. Could it be one host there who has journalistic integrity? Huh Shep?
Built in anchor texting: this really is the good life.

In his interview with Mike Huckabee and pretty much had Huckabaa having to agree with him the whole way through even though wanted to try and defend the GOP. No such luck.
Goodnight, Frau Blücher
...my guess is that the senators who filibustered the 9-11 first responders' bill probably sleep very well at night -- because anyone who can vote to delay this bill when our government has spent the last nine-plus years milking 9-11 at every conceivable opportunity does not possess a conscience which might keep him or her awake with pangs of guilt.
Never trust anyone who insists that patriotism requires you to blindfold yourself with the flag.
...a "First Responder" gets even a dime he or she doesn't deserve? This is Amurka goldurn it and we all know that it better to deny thousands of people a benefit than to allow a single person to get even a penny he or she doesn't deserve. Just like it's better to try and convict any number of innocent people than to let a single guilty person go free.
No exceptions. (Except for rich people.)
