From the AFL-CIO Blog--Trumka on MSNBC: Jobs Summit a Good Step:

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said tonight on MSNBC’s “The Ed Show” he was encouraged by the White House Jobs Summit earlier today and that he’s looking forward to working on the urgent goal of job creation.

Trumka told host Ed Schultz that in the discussions among President Obama, administration officials, economists and business leaders, there was a broad consensus that we need to fix an economy that has shed millions of jobs. Trumka said of the jobs summit:

I think it worked really well. The president really does understand the urgency of job creation. He said it on numerous occasions: jobs, jobs, jobs. I think his staff and Cabinet understand the importance of job creation. A lot of good ideas came out today that are usable. If we turn them around real quick, we can start putting Americans back to work in weeks.

If you want to see the most sobering example of the unemployment crisis in America (next to actually being unemployed) take a look at this:

It is sobering. Thanks for posting that Git.
People will forgive Obama if he gets all these unemployed people back to work in the near future. If not, it doesn't bode well for the Prez.

Another great thread from Heather. Kudos to you Heather.

and the sad thing is the real numbers are even worse. That's not taking into consideration the number of people who quit looking and who are underemployed. Thanks Mudshark and it's nice to know I've got a few readers over here even if you don't have the conversation of the front page. I agree they had better do something on jobs and quick. They keep complaining about the deficit but if we don't get people working again, that's just going to continue to get worse and no, it won't bode well for Obama if unemployment stays this high. Right now Trumka is feeling a lot more optimistic than I am.

mudshark's picture

People will forgive him for this escalation if they get back to work. Simple as that. Will they forget? Not a chance.
Will they vote for him in 2012? Probably. More than likely. If they go back to work. And that also has to have some job security. Like they'll be able to keep their jobs for more that 18months-2years. Then they'll forgive and vote for him again.
There is so much intel that we're not privy too.
I wouldn't want Obama's job. I can't see how anyone would want that job. Not after everything Bush did to kick the country in the nuts.

But every pundit and every talking head, and too many cheeto encrusted blogger fingers know exactly what Obama HAS to do and if he doesn't they know who and how he has been bought off, sold out, or how he is taking orders from the trilateral commission or neocon shadow government. (obviously)

Cracks me up!

Economy sheds fewest jobs since 2007

Only 11,000 jobs lost in Nov.; Unemployment rate dips to 10 percent

[...]

The unemployment rate fell to 10 percent from 10.2 percent in October, where economists expected it to remain.

If part-time workers who want full time jobs and laid off workers who have given up looking for work are included, the so-called underemployment rate also fell, to 17.2 percent from 17.5 percent in October.

There was other positive news in the report. The average work week rose to 33.2 hours, from a record low of 33 hours. Economists expect employers will increase hours for their current workers before hiring new ones.

The department also increased its job estimate for September, to a loss of 139,000 from 219,000, and for last month, to 111,000 from 190,000.

Obama picked a good time for a jobs summit - just as the numbers are getting better. It makes it all look good on paper. We'll have to hope this is the beginning of a turnaround.

Almost Creating Jobs!

New unemployment numbers a sign recession is losing grip.

WASHINGTON -- By most measures, the economy is growing again, but the labor market has yet to turn the corner. Friday's unemployment report provides hope that December will be the first month of job growth in two years.

Forbes even seems to be optimistic?

But they're not real jobs. Not the kind anyone could support a family on.

US Stocks Futures Surge After Nonfarm Payrolls Report

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. stock futures surged Friday morning as the monthly nonfarm payrolls report shattered expectations, providing a sign the labor market is finally starting to heal.

After trading around 15 points higher prior to the report, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures jumped 123 points to 10475 in recent trading. Standard & Poor's 500 futures added 15 to 1113 and Nasdaq 100 futures gained 24 to 1805.

Setting off the gains, U.S. job losses slowed sharply in November and the unemployment rate unexpectedly declined. In its monthly report, the Labor Department said nonfarm payrolls fell by just 11,000 last month, slowing down from a downwardly revised 111,000 drop seen in October. It was the best showing since December 2007, when payrolls rose by 120,000, said a Labor department official. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires had expected a payroll decrease of 125,000.

The unemployment rate edged lower to 10% in November from 10.2%. Economists had forecast the jobless rate would remain at October's level of 10.2%, when it rose to the highest level since April 1983.

This might be the bestus Xmas gift to jobseekers, a job!

Those who ignore history are bound to repeat it. So, just how much of Obama's troop escalation and "surge" in Afghanistan is American Imperialist Exceptionalism, or feeding the M.I.C. beast, and how much is either a "jobs" or a "jobs stop-loss" program? Without our overseas wars, just how high would the USA's unemployment figures be - 20% - 25% ?

It certainly makes one pause to reflect on just how bad a deal that Wall Street Mobster Bail-out (TARP) was, considering its failure to stimulate either Main Street or the employment numbers.

Economists Predict Job Losses Will Stop In Early 2010

[...]

"While the recovery has been jobless so far, that should soon change," said Lynn Reaser, NABE's president and chief economist at Point Loma Nazarene University. "Within the next few months, companies should be adding instead of cutting jobs."

Let's hope the economists are even half right, eh?

Giving hundreds of billions to bankers as well as a line on virtually free money which continues through today took about 10 minutes.

There's a big difference in perspective between those who are concerned with "the job market" as opposed to those who are concerned with "the labor market."

When the job market is bad the labor market is great - and visa versa. Which do you think the Goldman Sachs agents Obama Administration prefers?

For me, I'd just follow the money.

So we talked about it. Now what?

We are tied into the Gobal economy and the lost Jobs are noot coming back, so now that they poke about it where do we go, or is just talking about it suppose to make us feel better.

I have heard NO definite plans on Infastructructure, No Plans on Mass Transit which by the way supports JOBS, Local and Regional economies, or Construction for the National federal Highway systems.

Its great that they speak of housing construction but to what end are we suppose to build houses that can't be purchased?

the Unions are doing great they speak of education but in working with big business fall way short on continueing education, which would go along way to helping forgo future job shut downs.

The proposals sound find but where is the real meat of JOBS.

Addressing the issue of longjevity in anyone field and LOCKING those jobs into this country is the real issue. Failing to look at the Steel, and Auto Industries are a perfect example of immediate goal reaching and short range failure.

The Lack of having the Financial Institutions locked in for a long run for profits is a Failure as they are inot short run high risk make or break profit to Failure and the investor is absorbing the brunt of Failure.

So What was accomplished or should I be saying yippee they spoke about it.

How about mass Transit for major Vitiies with 50,000+ population base.

How about restoration projects for Government and Home owners verses new building.

How about a Grid Field for the Wind Mill projects that are almost at a standstill.

How about enviro restriction vehcile access to cities of 50,000= pop. with a user permit to go into the city and a phase out of no Gas cars after a 5 year peiod.

These are some suggestions some good and some bad, yet I heard nothing spoke of that other then to say we spoke about jobs. The last point if they are REALLY serious a system should be setup for the continueing eduscation of those workers that so desire to do so the advantages of this are endless. So now lets get serious about the Job commitment.

WASHINGTON – The unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 10 percent in November as employers cut the smallest number of jobs since the recession began. The better-than-expected job figures are a rare note of encouraging news for the labor market.

Oh thanks a lot the unemployment rate is lower now because job cuts we're much less then they usually are wow that's great news man.

The "Green Fraud" made up by Limpballs the Schweinhund al-qaeda Leader und Fuchs News is nothing more than doctored bullcrap intended to slow down Obama's progress. In the last few years Germany has created 500,000 jobs having to do with developing 'Green' energy and China has become light years ahead if the USA with millions of new jobs in the ;Green; industries.

Obama will succeed. And be re-elected in 2012. Get onboard or get out of the way. There's a change a comin'.

"The unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 10 percent in November " Duh ! I wonder , has it occurred to anyone that this is the holiday season ? Some businesses actually have to hire temp help and they are not going to be laying off before Christmas when business is up and they need the help but just wait until after Christmas , after the New Year , reality will settle right in like a brick .

No I did not "forget" that January is always a bad month for employment , what I said was they are cheering the latest employment numbers like it's "recovery" when all it is is the holiday season and temp jobs and wait until after the New Year ( not only the month January ) and see how much there is to cheer about then . Hard to understand is it ? Sheeesh .
