Michelle Bachmann once again proves to America that she's downright insane. TPM and Think Progress have more debunking Bachmann's fear mongering.
Bachmann: Take this into consideration. If we look at American history, between 1942 and 1947, the data that was collected by the census bureau was handed over to the FBI and other organizations, at the request of President Roosevelt, and that’s how the Japanese were rounded up and put into the internment camps. I’m not saying that’s what the Administration is planning to do. But I am saying that private, personal information that was given to the census bureau in the 1940s was used against Americans to round them up and put the Japanese in internment camps.

Well.... The average person this is geared to would not recognize those names as Japanese, just "fer'n" (or however you spell their word for "foreign"). Remember, the average American doesn't understand that China, Japan, and Asia are separate countries. (I once listened to two co-workers. "This doctor says he's going to Asia and wants to know if he will have phone coverage. Where is Asia?" "I think it's part of Japan. Yeah, it's part of Japan." Swear-to-Elvis.)

I've seen people talk to young Asian relatives in pidgin (priceless looks on their faces when the "little slitty-eyed" kid--to borrow Prince Phillip's non-bon-mot phrase--responds in perfect English), had people ask my ex "are you Chinese or Japanese?"--I'd often jump in with "she's American." And so on...she'd never complain about it.
Back in the day Fireside Theater did an album with a skit on it, two women talking with one extolling the cleanliness and good grooming of Laotians, then at the end the one says "I guess I'll really have to get a couple of them myself."

Maybe this comes of either living in California or just my being dense, but the level of racism toward asians in my neck of the woods seems to be pretty mild. I mean, I've overheard the occasional ignoramus say something disparaging, and there are a few of the "DO YOU UN-DER-STAND ENGLISH" types, but it seems pretty mild and benign for the most part.
My wife is Japanese (genetically and in terms of citizenship), so I don't know if that makes it more or less likely for me to notice.
I always kind of look forward to the census, because I'm a bit proud of having a household international enough that English isn't the only language spoken at home.

P.P.S. If you read the Federal statute about the census, failing to fill it out completely or with false information is a violation of federal law. This should come in handy next election cycle.

What really disturbs me about this woman is that she has influence over so many children. I believe she has 5 or 7 of her own. Also, if she encourages her constituents not to comply with the census and the population in her district falls significantly,it could end up being absorbed and she will loose her seat. I didn't listen to the details of what she said, and the fact that she's using the Census to frighten people is wrong, but technically she's right.
The Census was used to locate Japanese families during WWII. Census data has also been used by cigarette manufactures in order to market cigarettes to children. Census data has been used for all kinds of unethical reasons. They protect confidentiality (presumably) much better than they used to, but aggregate-level Census data is available publicly to whoever wants it for whatever purpose. I use Census data for my job, and I've actually heard a lecture from an upper-level Census employee (I'm sorry, I can't remember his name) on this very subject. I will come back and post his name if I can find it.

I don't see any text to Article I Section 2 which would support her argument that she's only required to give the number of people in her household. Moreover, Art I Sec 2, specifically states that the census shall be conducted "in such Manner as they [Congress] shall by Law direct."
