When even Joe Scarborough is calling you out for fear mongering, you've got a problem.

From Think Progress:

Earlier today, ThinkProgress noted that conservatives are freaking out over President Obama’s upcoming speech to schoolchildren about “persisting and succeeding in school,” claiming that it is actually aimed at political indoctrination. On MSNBC’s Morning Joe today, host Joe Scarborough ripped into the hyperventilating conservatives. “Seriously, why don’t we want the president of the United States, any president of the United States, delivering the message to kids: work hard, stay in school, succeed,” said Scarborough, adding, “get your ratings if you want, you’re just screwing your political party.”

Tomorrow after Joe reads his message points he'll be singing a different tune, just like Alberto did!

Scarborough shows me that he is not a complete wingnut, although it has been some time since I have seen and sense of rationality come from him.

I wonder what triggers these episodes of sanity?

Um

Maybe because of Beck losing all of his sponsors?

I'm just guessing

but, didn't Dubya and other presidents (Reagan?) make speeches that were 'beamed' into classrooms or at least provided on paper - to be discussed???

The GOP realizes that the "scary black man in the White House" refrain has legs with the American people and will use it all the way until the mid-term elections. The GOP has already proven to be a party without morals, why should anybody, anywhere expect them to have a conscience?

The one good thing that can come out of this is that many non-whites see this obvious racism and (hopefully) will remember this on Election Day.

With the numbers of non-whites growing as a percentage of the voting population (and the aging white population dying off) it's a wonder the neocons can't see this and aren't marketing themselves as anything but screaming racists.

The public health system needs to find the vectors for the rapid transmission of this communication disease. How does it infect millions in a matter of hours? Is it borne electronically or is print transmission also a threat. Why does it drive its victims foaming at the mouth mad? How does it continue to mutate rapidly enough to thwart all measures to inoculate against it? Will washing our hands help protect against its spread?

They will never old enough quick enough to vote for him.

I started watching MSNBC mid-2006, and they had a fairly reasonable, Conservative host named Joe Scarborough that had no problem holding the Republican Party's feet to the fire. What ever happened to that guy?

It's so nice when republican fools call republican fools scum bags...

Even a 3-card Monte dealer will let a sap win once in awhile. All the better for the sap to double down on the next bet.
Joe gives us one once in a awhile just to keep us coming back. He did that on his SCarbourough Country show and worked into this gig replacing Imus.
I don't fall for it anymore. He's for torture. He sucks. Plus, he somehow make Mika into a pod person. She sits next to him like an abused spouse.
Give us our Mika back, you scoundrel!!!

For too long the president was trying to appease the crazy racists who hate him. Now that he sees that they literally are going to keep their children home from school the day he delivers his speech---as though he is planning to talk to them about porn or something, maybe just maybe he'll see they truly don't like him.

So fear-mongering is bad NOW?

Face it, Joe - you're a scum-sucking ex-Congresscritter who is happy to play the false equivalency game. Republicans have revealed themselves as ethically, morally, and intellectually bankrupt, and you're trying to win points with the public.

Oh my gosh I thought I was the only one that felt that way about Mika B. She certainly does not represent thinking women at all, she is weak and when she does happen to have a position she allows Joe to push her around and she wilts it is most sickening

You'd think she'd stand up to him and call him on his bullshit.
Cause that's all the guy says, is bullshit.
One brief moment of clarity does not cement his credibility.

Forget about working.period. you ain't gonna need that one.
And we won't be helping you either,(ya lazy fucktards).

But we want you to succeed, join the Republican party. And all will be beautiful.

What is your conceptual, continuity?

"WHAT" is Obama gonna brainwash your kid into doing? By the time the school has brainwashed them into forgetting their goals, and their desires for success, nothing Obama can say will get them over that indoctrination.
So....again....What is Obama gonna brainwash your kid into doing?
Nancy and Ronald666WilsonReagan brainwashed the entire republican party to just say...."no"....to everything.

mudshark's picture

This was about speaking in PUBLIC SCHOOLS!
Fuckem, lettum take their kids to a private school if they don't like it.
That is the CHOICE!

)O(

That's the whole shebang.

I think it's part of their continuing attempts at public vouchers for education, by claiming their kids are being indoctrinated.

The problem with vouchers is you're only transferring the problems of the public schools to the private schools who hadn't had to deal with them in the past.

And like colleges they'll dumb down their curriculum, since no one wants the rep of being the school that flunks out the most students. And they'll choose children of alumni first, jocks second, and everyone else competes for the crumbs that are left.

And like ray gunn's infamous block grants to states, will be opening up the opportunity for massive fraud because of lack of accountability.

God I'm boring.

Oops...was that a school prayer?

Nope, ain't gonna go for that one.
That's why they call them private.

The parents keeping their kids at home that day would themselves have been school age when Reagan gave his address.

How's that for "indoctrination"?

Not like Obama sat in a classroom reading an upside down book for 13 minutes while the country was allegedly under attack and his presence there made the kids a collateral target too. The wingnuts have short memories.

...that the Republicans DON'T want children to stay in school and succeed? If kids start going to and graduating from college, corporations lose their cheap labor force.
Educated people tend to question authority more, think for themselves, and tend to be more liberal.
All these things would be terrible for an already shrinking Republican Party. They need to keep the masses uneducated, uninformed, and gullible.

One thing that's so sad about this is that the Republican leadership and their strategist know good and well this is a political stunt- stir up the masses of right wing knuckle dragging morons by scaring them into believing the president has some ulterior sinister motive. It's so cynical and dishonest it's truly unbelievable. Well, it works both ways, we can be sure that future presidents of ANY political persuasion will NOT be allowed to address school children. For that matter, we may need to ban any elected political official who identifies with a particular party from ever addressing school children. Is this really the road these people want to take? Let's really divide the country.

Conservative media take note: Reagan preached tax cut gospel to America’s students

Before that "POLITICAL VISIT BY A PRESIDENT".... THERE WAS REAGAN: The RR Library says:

Public Progams

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library sponsors school programs and public events throughout the year, such as 4th of July, Presidents' Day and Colonial America.
For Educators

Lesson plans, curriculum guides and educator workshop materials including the Great Communicator Files and Picturing the Presidency: President Reagan and the Cold War.
Education Workshops

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library offers educational workshops for teachers and students on the Great Communicator Files, Picturing the Presidency, and From the Source, an archives workshop.

To be perfectly fair, President Clinton did it too. Here's an example:

U.S. Newswire

Article: Transcript of Clinton Remarks to Glen Forest Elementary Community

U.S. Newswire ; October 31, 1998 ; 700+ words ... U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is a transcript of remarks by President Clinton today to the Glen Forest Elementary School community: Glen Forest Elementary School Falls Church, Virginia 10:45 A.M. EST THE PRESIDENT: Thank you. Good morning. First ...
