Eric Cantor's Press Secretary Interrupts 60 Min Interview to Claim Reagan Never Raised Taxes
In what was overall a pretty softball interview with Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, there was one pretty telling moment to illustrate the type of toxic political environment we're living in, due primarily to Congressional leaders like Eric Cantor and that is the unwillingness to even admit facts.
When asked about his image of being someone who is unwilling to compromise and the fact that the man he claims is his hero, Ronald Reagan, was willing to compromise on taxes and work with Democrats, Cantor denied that Reagan ever "compromised his principles." When Leslie Stahl pointed out the obvious, that not raising taxes was one of his principles, Cantor's press secretary interrupted the interview, yelling from off camera that what Stahl was saying wasn't true.
As has been noted here at C&L, the Republican myth about Ronald Reagan being unwilling to raise taxes is just not true. Heaven forbid, Reagan raising taxes 11 times, not just several as the 60 Minutes report stated, might get in the way of their talking points about St. Ronnie.
You can watch the entire interview here.
Transcript below the fold.
Stahl: Given his upbringing and his marriage, Cantor says he's nothing like the intractable obstructionist the Democrats say he is.
Cantor: Nobody gets everything they want. And so--
Stahl: That's just exactly your image: that you want only what you want.
Cantor: But it's just I hope I'm not coming across like that now, because it's just not who I am. I mean, it really is--
Stahl: So are you ready to compromise?
Cantor: So I have always been ready to cooperate. I mean, if you go back to the first--
Stahl: What's the difference between compromise and cooperate?
Cantor: Well, I would say cooperate is let's look to where we can move things forward where we agree. Comprising principles, you don't want to ask anybody to do that. That's who they are as their core being.
Stahl: But you know, your idol, as I've read anyway, was Ronald Reagan. And he compromised.
Cantor: He never compromised his principles.
Stahl: Well, he raised taxes and it was one of his principles not to raise taxes.
Cantor: Well, he-- he also cut taxes.
Stahl: But he did compromise--
Cantor: Well I --
[Press Secretary: That just isn't true. And I don't want to let that stand.]
Stahl: And at that point, Cantor's press secretary interrupted, yelling from off camera that what I was saying wasn't true.
[Reagan: My fellow Americans...]
Stahl: There seemed to be some difficulty accepting the fact that even though Ronald Reagan cut taxes, he also pushed through several tax increases, including one in 1982 during a recession.
[Reagan: Make no mistake about it, this whole package is a compromise.]
Cantor: We as Republicans are not going to support tax increases.
Stahl: So, we've seen the two sides of Eric Cantor: the push and pull between his hard fighting style on legislation that appeals to his party's conservative wing and his warm, Southern gentleman demeanor.
Stahl basically admitted that part of the reason for Cantor doing the interview was to try to soften up his image as an obstructionist. I don't think he helped himself with this portion. They also featured his wife but made no mention of her conflict of interests during the TARP bailouts or the issues with the pension fund she was put in charge of that I wrote about here.
What they did discuss during the interview is that Cantor's wife is a former liberal Democrat and is still pro-choice and pro-gay marriage. I wonder how that's going to sit with those "tea party" social conservatives that he's been courting?

And "his warm, Southern gentleman demeanor"? WTF? Compared to what-- a cottonmouth or a water moccasin?

as their "idol" is a complete imbecile.
You can add into Mr. Cantor's resume that not only is he a lying c*cksuker, but a DELUSIONAL lying c*cksucker.
Saint Ronnie can do no wrong, all hail the great and powerful Raygun.
Cantor is a punk and a tool of the 1%.

Here's more proof Cantor and ALL Republicans are sick, bigoted Conservative extremists, fueled by the hatred, fear and lies of Bigotry (Religious, Moral, Political and Racial Bigotry). Truth and honesty are not some of their stronger traits.
While spewing their hateful lunatic ideology in a smoky, dingy neighborhood corner Bar might be unavoidable , vomiting their terrorist self centered Conservative lies in public or as a supposedly public official is really harmful and dangerous to a civil society.
The logic of "I'll show people I'm a good family man because that makes me a nice guy" is lost on me. After 65 years on this planet I've encountered many people who were all good family men and women, but were absolutely miserable to work for or with.
that a closet wife beater would be welcome to be a church deacon, but an openly Gay person was going to Hell fer sur.
Why are Republican wives (mothers?) always "blonde"?
Stepford Wife thing I do believe.
It may have been a softball interview as far as we are concerned but I think as far as "middle America" is concerned it showed hi to be a asshole. Just one little example is that when is press secretary spewed forth I think that 60 Minutes went to a clip of Reagan raising taxes. There were other things that made Cantor look like the asshole that he is. I think this was more that I would have expected.
another take. The fact that C#ntor didn't leads me to believe that they were happy with the unconventional outcome.

perhaps he is looking for a new Press Secretary ... one with the good sense to keep his mouth shut when the boss it doing interviews near those recording devices.
but Leslie has that handy thing called final edit. The use of a video clip of St Ronnie that totally contradicts the fictional storyline that his press secretary tried to insert was a rarity on MSM - a piece of video evidence that clearly shows a Republican told a lie. If there was more of this kind of reporting, would some apparently dense people finally start to get that these psychopaths are pathological liars?
resignations due to ethics violations, resignations due to association with criminals ...etc in the Reagan administration?? I hear numbers as low as 150 and as high as 230. What a saint he was.

... when a GOP Press Secretary takes a puff piece of PR like this interview and derails it, making his candidate look like an idiot in the process.
The handler was merely trying to keep Cantor from hearing the truth. Wouldn't want to burst his illusions about Ronnie Rotten. Imagine what would happen if suddenly Cantor started listening to facts? He would no longer be of value as a puppet.
How many times do they get to spew BS before the public (Republican voters, they don't consider Dems to be human) wise up ?
That was his puppet master, stepping out of character. Imagine Jeff Dunham, speaking for Peanut, and accidentally allowing his lips to move. Everybody would be startled by that. This is why they all looked off stage when the handler spoke. He totally ruined the whole skit.
with Trickie Dick(disgraced),Carter(bumbling good man) ,and Saint Ronney(the first to use a teleprompter) it sure was a baptism into the World of the Grownups.I was sure I wouldn't see 30 before they blew the whole place to Hell. Imagine my relief.
She should have told the clown shouting off camera to shut up and if he gets elected to office she will interview him but right now she is talking to Cantor and YES REAGAN DID RAISE TAXES and your should go back to school and complete your homework assignments clown!
stephen
...surprised me. She's a terrible interviewer with a knack for interrupting her sources' responses with goggle eyes and, "Gosh, do you really mean that?" interjections of her her feigned shock into the interview. Her hit-job on Al Gore in 2000 is proof enough. When she comes on 60 Minutes, the wife and I mute the segment until the next one arrives.
Did she ever rebut Cantor's spin doctor with the actual number of times Reagan raised taxes? Doesn't sound like it. She was just hoping for some "pure emotion," is my guess. 'Cuz it sells the piece, dontcha know.
what the issue was was whether or not reagun ever 'compromised' not whether he raised taxes.
The clip they showed of reagun was him saying in a televised presidential address that he had compromised (exact word used).
It wasn't the worst interview she's ever done I don't think and certainly not the worst one 60 Minutes has done.
We needed another FDR, instead we got another clinton.
this press secretary is rude.
The next interview. Stahl sucks and there is no hope for the exisiting bobbleheads for the most part. Part the biggest obstacle to having a real in depth look at the likes of Can"tWhore is that if you make him look like an idiot (and that would not be hard to do with this clown Can'tWhore) you will not get the next interview after the clowns in Virginia send him back to congress and he gets more powerful....because its all about the ratings folks...eyes on the prize is not about emancipation anymore its about advertizers paying those inflated saleries to the likes of Leslie Stahl and company.
stephen
interrupted in the middle of an interview.....and now imagine if the the PR person was a woman....can you imagine the explosion of venom that would have been spewed at that person by O'Reilly? Now I'm not saying that is a good thing but Stahl should have been a bit more perturbed at the clown off camera that for sure.
stephen
would NEVER tell Cantor that St. Ronnie raised taxes.
Martha: Truth and illusion, George; you don't know the difference.
George: No, but we must carry on as though we did.
Martha: Amen
Because he is talking to his base and not the majority of Americans. The under-educated voters, especially in Virginia will believe all of the lies that their representatives spew. If John Boehner had
any cojones, like Lyndon Johnson, he would have axed Cantor when he started undermining his authority. I guess he was out playing golf at the time.
"Efforts to make Cantor appear as something other than an obstructionist douchebag gone terribly awry."
Are members of the Cult of St Ronnie, a group of rigid political lemmings modeled after Jonestown. These androids have no leader worth following today so they just made up a phony Ronnie v2 to worship.
More power to you Eric and your imbecile followers believing a myth as you head for political obscurity.
"We will find fulfillment not in the goods that we have, but in the good we can do for each other."
Robert F. Kennedy
That would be "pickin' up your fuckin' garbage" and "makin' sure your kids don't drink piss from no fuckin' water fountains."
I think it's pronounced "gah-bitch".
Hockey Pucks, Reagan did raise taxes, He liked a balanced budget and not like todays excuses for Republicans...
Reagan single-handedly invented our national debt. When his budget advisor gave him all the options on what programs to cut to balance the budget, he ignored them all, because he knew they were political suicide.
Reagan was the template for the asshole GOPers that have taken this nation to the brink of financial ruin.
Reagan actually did, thought, or believed something. it was so easy to see the strings moving the puppet.
"I've never pictured Hell as a place of fire, sulfur and demons with pitchforks, I've always imagined it as a place of excess and broken dreams and hopes."

NOBODY 2012
When you see this obvious weaseling liar mincing around and batting his eyelashes at every opportunity to avoid answering a question and instead repeat a Republican campaign talking point, you wonder why the half of the USA that rushes to the polls on election day to vote people of his ilk in haven't already sent all their life's savings to that Nigerian Prince email scammer.
This was still a puff piece. Stahl could have mentioned that it was Cantor and a handful of the then House Republican minority who reneged on their already whipped votes to pass the original TARP on September 29, 2008 that actually crashed worldwide stock markets and economies in our generation's Black Monday 1929 event.
The media has worked very hard to cover for their precious Republicans on this critical point, spinning instead the inaccurate and easily debunked notion that it was the collapse of Lehman Bros. two weeks earlier on Sept. 15, 2008 that crashed the market and set world economies, the USA included, into paralysis. Not true. Although the market didn't like Lehman Bros. collapse, it took it in stride and didn't collapse. In fact, over the next several days the broad U.S. market closed higher than it was the day before the Lehman Bros. collapse. And why not? The Great USA was going to put a piece of legislation on the table in a couple of weeks to make sure the banks stayed open and we and the rest of the world wouldn't plunge into another Great Depression...right?
The Great USA under George W. Bush would show they had the political will and smarts not to repeat the mistakes of a previous Republican presidential failure heading toward a Great Depression and tighten the money supply...right?
Wrong. A handful of Republican House minority members who had previously told then Republican Minority Leader John Boehner that they would vote yes on passing TARP reneged on their vote at the very last minute and the legislation failed to pass, shocking the world. The market crashed more than 7% on that single day, taking worldwide economic confidence with it. And it and those economies, ours included, have not yet recovered from that serious blow to our confidence and might not for several more years. The Republican House members who triggered our generation's Great Crash of 1929 and edged us precariously closer to another one of their patented Great Depressions, represented by none other than Eric Cantor, held a quick press conference to explain that they had pulled their votes of support at the last minute because then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi had supposedly said something that hurt their feelings that morning. Swear to god.
Thus was one of the first of the more recent "brinksmanship to nowhere but disaster" moves made by the congressional Republicans and it had NOTHING to do with the "tea party" because there wasn't even a tea party yet. This was ALL regular ol' congressional Republicans headed by Eric Cantor.
How nice of Leslie Stahl not to mention that little bit of critical information about Eric Cantor and his Republican Party and instead pawn off most of the crises events leading to decline over the past few years to some non-existent fall guy for Republican responsibility for that decline called the "tea party". It isn't the "tea party". It's REPUBLICANS, pure and simple. Allowing the Republican Party to hide behind the "tea party" label is simply another means for them to eke out an advantage come election day. When voters step into the booth to cast a vote and are understandably angry at the "tea party", they're not going to find anyone on the ballot running under the "tea party" banner. So that allows for at least the possibility that they'll vote for a Republican anyway.
Wow, How soon we forget! I had completely forgotten about how they reneged on passing TARP on the first try and it's direct consequence that the Stock Market crashed that day.
Sure we were in a dire circumstance already, but what if they had passed TARP without fail - and shown some solidarity and unity among our two parties, even if it was just for show. I clearly remember thinking that at the time.
He has that "southern gentleman demeanor"?? Up north, we call that "used car salesman bull shit".
I can't believe this southern drawl lying sack of shit can be confused with "southern gentleman demeanor", just because he "drawls" when he talks, and he exhibits a cool, unclear manner about himself. What a complete douchebag.
If this is what "southern gentleman demeanor" is, I want no part of it.
And not all liars are Republicans and not all of our problems are due to Ronald Reagan. Look up the Bradley-Gephardt "Fair Tax" Bill of 1986 for a good piece of Democratic legislation to explain why the stock market is going to drop even further.
refreshing.
Practical political poisoning of the system goes further back than acknowledged here. Suffice to say the whole of Washington DC's self aggrandizement and career politician's in general have totally perpetuated the concentration of wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer people and the concentration of power in stricter, less compassionate hands in all aspects of local, state and the federal government. Here are some thoughts to ponder: Civility is still elusive when Paul Ryan and the Toxic Egotistical Activist(TEA) party hold hands with the like of Eric Cantor. America's ideologic spread has widened given the inflexibility of the Taxation Eradication Activists(TEA) party and their mentor who covets the Speaker-ship in the House. Cantor's antics have taken the current 112th Congress down to 9% (dis)approval rating. He doesn't understand the general public's needs, wants or requirements, let alone how the Congress is supposed to work. His total function is to protect the top elite 1% and casts cooperation rather than compromise in his quest for deficit reduction. Cantor single handedly in conjunction with the freshmen Terrifying Errant Activist TEA party-ers created the five(5) failed deficit reduction talks. This agitator is truly an intolerable obstructionist! Every action attempted to help the average American with jobs, employee P/R tax or unemployment compensation is closely tied to deficit reduction without compromise. He will not talk about revenue enhancement even with a ten-plus offset in spending cuts. Cantor's draconian dogma is closely tied to Ayn Rand and her philosophy of Objectivism have been the subject of a great deal of criticism from various groups of Academic Philosophers. Cantor's stance on cutting tax rates is to hold hostage the taxpayer's of America. His sole function is to never allow the president any good results at any costs. The debt ceiling debacle created the first reduction of America's credit rating reduction in history. Cantor's actions have caused numerous brinkmanship failures detrimental to the entire country, even at the expense of his own TEA-GOP-Republican radical fringe element.
Stay classy, wing-nuts.
Just tried to post a link on how reagan did in fact raise taxes to Cantor's facebook page (twice). Not more than 30-45 seconds after posting it was erased (both times). I guess his facebook is as allergic to facts as he is.
Tried the same thing on palin's facebook. Not only is my link and comment erased, my ability to comment on her page has been blocked. Wouldn't want any of her cult members exposed to a pesky little thing like facts now would we.
"Facts are stupid things."
stupid me how could I forget that lol.
http://www.allhatnocattle.net/reagan%20quotes...
You can always tell when Cantor is lying. He smiles.
Cantor smiles a lot.
Stahl: That's just exactly your image: that you want only what you want.
Cantor: But it's just I hope I'm not coming across like that now, because it's just not who I am
I offer to the court Exhibit A, your honor.

Southern Gentleman?
If being a conniving, weaselly, back stabbing, scheming little conman, with a shit eating grin on their face from Virgina, equals a Southern G, then OK I agree.
If not now, when?
They aren't aware of history? What a douche. Maybe he should hire people that can do the job. Douche. Bag.
I love that at the beginning of the clip, Eric is on his bicycle wearing one of those geeky helmets that make him look like Lt Weenie of the Dork Patrol. It's 60 Minutes, no, maybe it's an ad for cholesterol medicine.
Lets recall the glorious deeds of Kim Il Jong, Stalin etc. and if you can't remember the current party line, your handler will assist you with the truth.
His main goal is not to balance the budget, but to get rid of government programs he doesn't like. In one sense, Reagan is a good role model for Cantor, because Reagan's plan, according to David Stockman the head of the OMB at the time, was to create such huge deficits that programs would have to be cut drastically or better eliminated. That's why Cantor insists on revenue neutrality. We have a budget that is way out of balance. It can be balanced through spending cuts (only that won't really work), tax increases, or a combination of the two. If you make a deal that is revenue neutral, you've done nothing to balance the budget or cut the debt. Cantor is simply trying to do the same thing Reagan failed to do -- gut the social safety net, using budget deficits as the justification. The last thing Cantor wants would be for the American people to see that we can afford a safety net. If we cut Defense, and start taxing the wealthy at rates that are more in line with historical norms, we'll be on our way toward getting the budget under control. Will cuts still be necessary? That depends on the choices we make. Get rid of the Bush tax cuts and our fiscal picture will suddenly look very different.
Bye-bye Eric!
Luntz would be so proud that he didn't say compromise. Compromise might be used against him in a primary, so that is a bad word. How dare you believe Reagan raised taxes?? Once those new history books come out we won't have to worry about future generations learning the truth. Now they just have to erase those tapes Nixon style.
It's just craziness the way those crazy's idolize Ronald Reagan!! True, Eric Cantor is one of the most disliked politician and is pushing Boehner into oblivion!
Many, many of us are sick of seeing and hearing Cantor and would like him to slip on a banana peel and dissapear!
The Tea Party and Republicans are one and the same!! One hides behind the other!! One uses the
other!! Liars, Liars, Liars!!
They can fool some of the people some of the time, but Can't fool all the people all of the time!!
I'm really glad C&L ran this clip of Cantor to show how deeply the modern Republican Party is submerged in its own counter-factual version of reality. It's really frightening to consider how a political party like the GOP has a major voice in determining our nation's future, yet so stubbornly denies the basic facts on such things as evolution, global warming, the causes for the nation's debt crisis, the need for raising taxes and Obama's citizenship and religious affiliation, and even, bizarrely, whether Reagan pushed for tax increases.
History abundantly shows the dangers that can occur when power accrues to a political party whose central tenets are founded on irrational theories of history, science and race. Just look at the lessons of the 20th Century and the irrational beliefs that fueled the genocidal movements that slaughtered tens of millions of people in Europe, Asia and Africa.
I am not saying the Republican Party is anything like the Nazi Party of Germany in the 1930s, but still....it's easy to spot the same irrational tendencies, the same black and white view of the world, the same enthusiasm for mythology and secret conspiracies; the same irrational belief in a counter-factual history that demonizes their opponents --- who are portrayed as monsters and oppressors who threaten all that is good and sacred, and who therefore must be destroyed at all costs.
It is hard to believe that Cantor and the other Tea Party members belong to the same party as Lincoln and even Reagan, who, for all his flaws, still grasped reality and did not treat his rivals as traitorous monsters. I am praying that eventually the Republicans, after serious losses at the polls, will eventually end their denial of reality and rejoin the world of facts and science.
Any Politician that voted for TARP screwed the middle class, benefited the bankers, and is for big government. Senator Orrin Hatch from Utah is up again to try and get re-elected after 36 years in the Senate. check our hatchrecords.com to see his record and how anti-conservative he is. He voted for TARP, and 16 debt ceiling increases- and the terrible NDAA
