David Shuster's Hypocrisy Watch: Michele Bachmann's Earmarks

David Shuster calls out Michelle Bachmann for her double talk on earmarks. After claiming that she requested zero earmarks for her state Bachmann now admits she requested millions of dollars in earmarks, but now says she took them but it's not a big deal:
Bachmann: Well, the average earmark I think for the state of Minnesota for the members of Congress is somewhere around 70,000– $70 million, so mine is very, very small on that level and that’s in the first two years that was in. After I saw the way that the process worked, after being a freshman, I saw how corrupt it was and took an earmark pledge and that’s why I personally have no earmarks in the current budget bill and the stimulus bill that was passed this year.
As David Shuster notes:
Shuster: The problem is, that level is wrong. According to Legistorm in 2008 Minnesota's Congressional delegation delivered 158 earmarks costing $330 million. The average earmark from Minnesota members was not $70 million as Bachman claimed but $2.1 million which is less than the $3.7 million Bachman earmarked.
Congresswoman, when you insist that your record be put in perspective and then you mislead people about the record of your colleagues, that's hypocrisy, and it's wrong.

I appreciate the fact he stood up to the Clintons and dared to tell it like it is during the primaries and say they were "pimping out" Princess Chelsea.
It was Hillary Clinton who tried to destroy him and wrote a letter to the head of NBC News demanding Shuster be fired for him remarks.

They elected Jessie "The Body" Ventura as Governor. They re-elected this woman after she called for a McCarthy style witch hunt to see which people in congress are truly American. She'll continue to lie and embarrass herself and still get re-elected.

This woman has a history of lying. She lied about her infamous interview with Chris Matthews where she called Obama "un-American" and called for the media to do an expose on all members of Congress to see who is "un-American." She later lied and claimed she didn't say what she said.
Every time you see her, she's got that big, goofy smile. Bachmann is a complete, utter fake. I don't think she's from this planet.
Rather like the Weather Channel--the Hypocrisy Channel, as it has enough material to run stories 24/7. Unlike the Weather Channel, however, they wouldn't have to repeat stories often to fill air.
It really angers me that politicians have such a low opinion of their constituents. Do they really think in this day and age of the internet, 24/7 news cycle, and video, that they can lie to us about their record and not be called out on it.

Can some generous plastic surgeon please step up and give Bachmann a free or low-cost boob job so she can look more like Katherine Harris? Sure, she'll still be as dumb as a Chevette diesel automatic, but at least I'll have something to stare at while she lies.

Never really watched 1600 Penn because of David Gregory. But when Shuster filled in for KO and I found out he was hosting 1600 I thought I give it a go. Hypocrisy watch is the best part but I think he does a good job overall and will probably keep watching.

...every time that FundiChristoFascist opens her fool mouth. I ..ahem.. happen to live in her district. Minnesota has 8 districts. Bachmann is the rep for the 6th district. This area covers a huge swatch of mouth-breathing mentally-challenged conservatives who are happy to vote against their economic well-being every 2 years. And it runs around and misses the more liberal Mpls-St. Paul area, which, if the damn district were drawn in a straighter line, would water down her right-wing base.
Tinklenberg should have won in 2008 - after she made an ass of herself on Hardball. Money came in from all over the country. No, this wide-eyed bible-banger will indeed get re-elected in 2010, unless she's indicted on some yet-to-be-discovered malfeasance (worse than simple stoopidity and lying), or the district lines get redrawn and/or Minnesota loses a district in the bigger picture.

In the second section she actually would have been correct-ish had she said "total" instead of "average." It's Shuster who needs a math lesson. Her total earmarks amounted to $3.7 mill, not her average earmark. The average earmark that he put up - $2.1 mill - was $330 mill/158 earmarks. Taking out Bachmann's $3.7 mill from the, and dividing the remaining total earmarked dollars by the number of remaining congresscritters, you get $46.6 mill per rep.
She's still a hack, but Shuster needs to do a better job of demonstrating it.
The absolute best one is when Shuster called Repub Senators on the subject of bonuses.
and she's a wide-eyed loon (makes sense considering she represents minnesota, the loon being the state bird and all).
These actually sound like reasonable programs to fund. HOWEVER - that does not change the fact that she's lying and is being completely hypocritical on the issue of earmarks.
So - the argument can be made that not all earmarks are bad things. But to the re-Thugs - their earmarks ... what? Don't exist as earmarks? Does she even know what the definition of an earmark is?
Bachmann is making this up as she goes along. As has happened in the past - she is the victim of her own big mouth, hypocrisy and stupidity. I hope her constituents are paying attention.

I posted the link to Legistorm on a blog on our local newspaper website last week (The St. Cloud Times, in MN-06). I had only a few comments, all of which were from rapid supporters who completely ignore her public record and do not seem to mind her nonsensical public statements and voting record - she votes "for the people." In fact, one stated that he was happy that Bachmann votes no for the people, which I promptly realized would be a fantastic slogan for her re-election campaign.

Thanks a lot, rural Minnesota! Bachmann is a spreading stain on the Congress that needs to be cleaned up and fast. If she and the equally wide-eyed wingnut wacko Marsha Blackburn (thanks a lot, rural Tennessee!) could be kicked out, the average IQ of Congress would go up by 50 points.
