Jon Stewart Eviscerates CNBC and Rick Santelli
Jon Stewart shows us that it might just be a really bad idea to stand him up for an appearance on his show. Or maybe Rick Santelli is actually better off that he didn't show up at all, because this could have gotten even uglier for him had he been there in person. Santelli apparently cancelled on him at the behest of his bosses. You remember his Howard Beale rant?
Santelli: President Obama, are you listening?
Stewart: Yeah man, Wall Street is mad as hell! And they're not going to take it anymore. Unless by it, you mean two trillion dollars of their own bail out money. That they will take.
Now Mr. Santelli was invited to come on this show and accepted the invitation and then on Friday canceled, or I guess the phrase would be bailed out.
How many people would have liked to see Santelli come on this program, are you listening? Are you listening, Rick Santelli? You see, Rick Santelli is angry that these loser home owners are going to get bailed out. He believes in personal responsibility, he believes in not rewarding the losers for missing all the warning signs. For God's sake, the guy works at CNBC. They're the best of the best.
If Rick Santelli is afraid to stand up to Jon Stewart then how can he stand up during an economic meltdown?
Stewart absolutely eviscerates Santelli and the rest of the gang of Wall Street and corporate apologists on CNBC. He shows clips of Cramer telling us that Bear Stearns is fine, "do not take your money out...Bear Stearns is not in trouble."
Bear Stearns went out of business six days later. And so on and so on. Once again a comedy show is willing to give us more "truthiness" as Stephen would say than our beltway media is willing to touch with a ten foot pole.
(John Amato contributed to the post)

You know who else is a loser? Those people who were dumb enough to work for Home Depot, Caterpillar and all those other cool companies that wisely fired their pathetic @sses. And those people who died from eating contaminated peanut butter are losers too.
I'm so glad we have smart people like Santelli and Cramer to guide us through these troubled times.
Hopefully humanity will one day learn to be humane.

And I can't see them sitting on their hands while Stewart slaughters the goose that lays the Golden Egg. -- Expect a full fledged war against Stewart by the Reich-Wing noise machine. We all know that John thought about it before he took them on like this. It'll be as bad or worse as anything they subjected Michael Moore to.

Here is Margaret Popper of Bloomberg from Feb 21, '09 in an analysis and discussion with NY Insurance Superintendent Eric Dinallo who is charged with the oversight of AIG.
He categorically states that AIGs losses are from Credit Default Swaps. Their Financial Services Unit is essentially a hedge fund that ran amok.
---
Today Dinallo in another interview with Margaret Popper let slip in a tangential fashion that AIG has $475 billion in swaps on their books.
Wait till we bail that out!!!
This was a live stream - they haven't released a clip as of yet.
Dinallo talks about why the Treasury and Fed didn't offer a backstop at first rather than offering straight cash.
They were acting without authority. Geithner was overseeing the deal and has been paying the swaps off at full value. This is outrageous.
Paulson got us into this because his best buddies at Goldman were owed $20 billion in swaps from AIG.
Bernanke before Congress expressed his outrage over AIG.

You know, GM files bankruptcy we lose the bailout money. The only part I like about GM going out would be parts will be obsolete. I can fix broken parts! I am not just a parts replacer but also a parts repairer. I can fix broken circuit boards, I can fabricate metal parts by my own hands. People like me will be in high demand in the years to come. I also like to share my wealth, I don't hoard it. I like to help the poor for next to free. As long as I have video games, a shower, food, bed and weed, I am good.
If GM goes down some people will be alright, if you are one of them good for you.
As for the bailout money, $25 billion compared to $2.2 trillion in the Financial Sector, it is completely chump change.
Don't worry about it.
The credit default swaps will make it look like peanuts.
The unions will be wiped out. The bond holders will be screwed, but watch the swaps, many of the bond holders don't care. Here is a segment on Bloomberg about bond holders and CDS. They're called Vulture Traders.
The ripple jobs effect of GM will be enormous. More mortgage defaults, more CDO defaults. More CDS action.
Every dollar of default in the Credit Markets can mean ten dollars of action in the Derivatives Market.
The world wide Derivatives Market is $680 trillion.
This financial world is a nightmare unfolding.

Nonsense.
The elitists who sneer at anyone who would even think of purchasing an American car are behind this schadenfreude towards GM.
GM should be allowed to reorganize and should receive any help it needs.
When you put something I have written in quotation marks please include the entire phrase which was:
The auditors say GM can't make it.
Here from Bloomberg.
This really isn't anything new. GM's cash burn and cash position compared to sales guaranteed that they would be back for more government money by the end of March. That was apparent in November.
Washington is captive to Wall Street handing over vast amounts with hardly any comment.
Yet when the automakers show up they are crucified for pennies on wall street's dollar.

From start to finish, hands down, truly one of the best 'Daily Shows' I've ever seen (and I watch the show religiously!). Jon Stewart and the writers of TDS outdid themselves last night. I especially loved the "Fuck You" towards the criminal billionaire Stanford - priceless!
Brilliant!
But it would not likely have been uglier had Santelli kept his date with TDS. Likely Stewart would have been polite and inquisitive, but he wouldn't have scorched his guest like this clip did.
Unless, of course, he PLAYED the clip with Santelli sitting there, THEN had the interview, with his now greenish-hued guest.
All the same, this bit was pure brilliance. I am sending around even now. Shame we have to go to a comedy network for our news, eh?

Santelli was just a propaganda messenger for the BANKs. with the unemployment numbers that have/are coming out many people are victums or collateral damage. businesses couldn't get commercial
paper/loans and smaller businesses can't get loans/credit,,,,,,,so they lay people off. local government
and corporations are losing MONEY on their investments BONDs so they lay off. in addition to that there are people who have the money/credit/documentation but refinancing is difficult when your property is underwater and your comparable properties in the 1 mile radius used to compare are underwater and losing value. the BANKs don't like taking losses on these mortgages.

They are wealthy because they pay poverty wages, pay a lower percent in taxes, send our jobs over seas, and raise the cost of living. BTW, about that one stock market douche bag standing next to Santelli that shouted "Off them", when asked about helping people who are losing their homes. Stewart's piece is priceless, yet my enjoyment of it is ruined by the response to it I am seeing.
So-called "real news" corporations, which are as inept as CNBC and are part of the problem, have been whining that Stewart's segment was "unfair", that it was a "hit piece".
I would like those pricks to answer two questions, though no doubt they would lack the spine to answer if they heard them:
1) Name one fact about the stock market and economy that Stewart got wrong.
2) Name one statement made the CNBC morons which Stewart misconstrued or took out of context.
The obvious answer to both is none, but to admit that fact is beyond them.
I love to watch Stewert do his incredible wonderful thing. First use humor to lower the fear that conservatives use to manipulate people. Then while the fear level is lowered slam your political points and truth home with even more humor at that perfect open teachable moment. Conservatives don't know what to do with this as they only understand how to scare folks but never learned to make them laugh (at least not on purpose)...for example I give you Dennis Miller. Both Stewert and Colbert have perfected this style of teaching with comedy. They keep conservatives and even progressives more honest. Together they offer one of the best and most informative hours on TV. I Think they are as valuable as Frontline, Bill Moyers, and News Hour (all of which I enjoy) in their own way and reach a lot of people who never find PBS Shows.
If only the CNBCs and NBCs and CNNs and Fox News (oh, forget them, they're a lost cause) were doing their jobs, this whole thing wouldn't have happened.
Thank you, Jon.
You know why? Because the comedians in television are the only dependable source of information. They are the only ones who see the big picture.
Jon stewart is quite an asset to the network.
Last night was the first time I caught TDS on TV. I'm in Canada, so I think its only been on basic cable for a short time. I'm so glad I caught this classic in real time!
If a drone kills a child in Kandahar, do the crying parents make a sound?
I am watching this Daily Show episode right now - Jon Stewart is so brilliant and on target that he's awesome to behold.
This legion of broadcasting millionaire pundits and dancing monkeys from the 'winners circle' of the out of control Three Card Monty game of Wall Street/Stock Market/Ownership Society are less believable than the guy in that Sham-Wow infomercial. Since Saint Ronnie Reagan let slip the dogs of deregulation and unchained the raging beasts of unlimited greed we have been riding this roller coaster towards its inevitable end - where we are right now.
I only pray that some clear thinking and unflinching assessment of reality will guide our society through the painful and necessary transition to a better regulated, more mixed, and more economically just system of capitalism tempered by conscience - supplied by a democratic system that promotes the best interests of society as a whole - until the next time that myopic selfish avarice manages to subvert any sort of balanced society and run it over a cliff, like we have all recently experienced.
This Daily Show episode does deserve an award.

Goodnight, Frau Blücher
these fucking thieves, it's not enough for them to rip everyone off, they want to bitch about helping out the people they so totally screwed. they should all be bullwhipped.
It's only funny if you ignore the criminality of what Stewart is exposing.
A financial press that acts like nothing but cheerleaders for greedy criminals as they fleece an entire global economy is not really funny, but seeing them exposed like this is certainly gratifying.
Shame that the so-called "real press" has no balls.
DON'T MISS Colbert's show on Ayn Rand - it's just as important and it's priceless.
