The Daily Show-- America: Target America

Jon Stewart takes the GOP hypocrites to task for wanting ACORN investigated while defending the likes of Karl Rove and refusing to investigate torture, and for freaking out over a video of school children praising President Obama.

The ONLY news/media outfit worth watching.

Jon nails it!

It wasn't bogus. I think they discovered one example wherein an ACORN employee managed to screw with the people screwing with her. What about the others? Those of us on the left really ought to stop making excuses for ACORN, accept that corruption was indeed exposed, and move on.

you meant to reply to me, but couldn't manage to figure out the comment system well enough to do so. well, no surprise. you can be angry at people trying to help poor & minority folk if you want to, but you obviously aren't familiar with the situation and don't know what you're talking about. I guess that's OK, it doesn't stop most other people from spouting off either.

The point is that what was videotaped was not representative of any official policy of ACORN. Nor was it condoned, once revealed. If the Republicans criteria for reacting as they have is based on what a small number of employees have done, then Stewart is absolutely correct in making the connection to a whole bunch of other organizations that have actually done worse.

Not to mention the Catholic Church.....

I am,however, more concerned about some of accusations relative to how ACORN handles Federal money, be it in failure to pay appropriate taxes or using the money for partisan political activities. I stress "accusations", because I don't know what is true or not.

ACORN needs to tighten up, review/revise its operation and training, and especially warn employees that they're under the spotlight. And take very seriously any laws governing use of federal money as a non-profit. Then in about a year, they should be able to resume
those legitimate activities that have been curtailed.

I guess Jon's trying to compensate some for having been taken in by the bogus ACORN story in the first place. He should really admit to having f#@cked up on that one. But better this than nothing...

sing it...

Speaking of indoctrination....how about mentioning the scum that did oh...lets say...JESUS CAMP? How about those idiots?

)O(

that was disturbing...

Jesus Camp - with the cardboard cutout of Bunnypants and the kids worshiping him is enough to make me hurl!

There's a great documentary, Jesus Camp. Talk about brainwashing. But that's not relevant to the ACORN story.

I prefer red light specials to blue lights.

and/or prostitutes are called both "red-light" districts and "blue-light" districts? Is it because cops are called so frequently with light-bars ablaze?

"RED-LIGHT DISTRICT -- Brothels once advertised their presence by burning electric lights covered with red shades or glass in their windows. This led to the Americanism 'red-light district' for an area know for its houses of prostitution, the term first recorded in the late 19th century." From "Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins" by Robert Hendrickson (Fact on File, New York, 1997).

"Listening to America" by Stuart Berg Flexner (Simon and Schuster, New York, 1982) states that the practice dates back even before electric lights -- red shades were used over lamps and candles. Mr. Flexner says the term was first used in the 1890s.

Any idea on why they're also called "blue-light" districts in some areas??

People are stupid and conflate blue light special with red light district?

Roman Polanski's consequences for his rape of a child are long overdue, and one's political stance should not be the primary determinant of one's personal position about insuring that Polanski gets his just 'reward.'

Our species continues to dance around the grim reality that most of one gender denigrates or diminishes most of the other. The erudite among us write reams of learned opinions regarding the genesis of this rift--and bemoaning the effects--but far too many of us will not even LOOK at what this power imbalance does to us all.

Case in point: Bill Maher thought it acceptable to joke about John Phillips' alleged sexual abuse of his daughter. Must we continue to use such warped self-immolation (speaking of the species as a whole here) as a source of humor?!

I may be mistaken, but I sincerely hope you are talking about the idea that both genders (at least in this society/culture) hold the opposite in very low regard behind closed doors, and that this rift actually seems to be escalating for whatever reasons.. And not just about a one-sided perceived 'oppression' in this society of one gender, for the sake of politics (or moral authority..); since your example cites a male figure seemingly 'demeaning' a female in a "politically incorrect" way (through comedy, of all things, since he is a comedian /rollseyes). Because if anything, culturally this 'oppression' of a by-gone era is rapidly becoming the opposite (which, if i'm not mistaken, has actually ironically, or not-so-ironically been for sometime one of said comedian's/social satirist's/socio-political analyst's many points about a cultural downfall).

Tucker, trying to sound intelligent and "unique", by not playing the Nazi card? WTF?

How many more 24-hour news programmes hasn't he been on yet?

(I only know him from C&L)

Also one was communist and one was fascist.

Exposing rightwing hypocrisy one asshat at a time.

of lunacy from The Angry Group is suffocating our democracy...

Yesterday, a well dressed (nod to socio-economic status only...) Latina told me she is convinced that Fox is the only news channel to watch. My stunned look prompted her to question my own news channel preference, and I averred a lack of faith in any televised news, particularly Fox, and asked her if she is familiar with Rupert Murdoch and his corporatist agenda. Of course, she is not, and ended the conversation with a look of incredulity because I have the unmitigated gall to reject Fox News as the only 'true' source of news available today.

A Latina... Fox News... I hope I can get somewhere very rural before the shit hits the fan...

I really don't mind stupid people. There are a lot of nice, hard-working stupid people who know they're stupid and don't operate as if they're not stupid.

But then there are stupid people who actually have opinions. I call them, "vapid, whack-job, extremist right-wingers".

Personally, I think the right thing to do is take anyone with an IQ below, say, 85 and have the opinion part of their brain removed about the same time they reach puberty.

Then the rest of us don't have to hear their stupid fucking opinions 24 hours a fucking day.

If somebody wants to put a petition together and lobby for this let me know where to sign.

Stop referring to the 'thugs as g.o.p.! It's a silent praise to them because they hear the word "grand" and you boost their slimy egos. It's dumb for us on the left to say gop! That said Stewert rox!

you looked a lot less gay when you had the bow tie.

"Among recipients of government money already convicted of serious misconduct, ACORN (had it been so convicted) wouldn't make it onto the list of the top 100. In fact, ACORN could receive 100 times the funding it does and still not make it onto the list." --David Swanson

Halliburton, KBR, the security Company (sorry the name escapes me at this time I apologize), Yeah! These Traitors, Murders Liars Cheats,Racist, Nazis that wrap themselves in the Flag, use PHOTO OPS.with the TROOPS and don't forget the endorsement of their BOOK of Fairy tales professing their believe in a make belief in a Phony Deity.
WWHEN IS CONGRESS GOING TO INVESTIGATE THE RACIST NAZI CHRISTIANS (RNC), the Party of NO, the Party of HATE the PARTY of Intolerance, the War Mongering Party.

The only media outfit worth watching. It is a crying shame, it should be a crime! When a comedy program gives better information to the people then all the so called news outlets combined!
It is amazing how far a little bit of honesty in a sea of lying bullshit goes. I have not watched the "tv news" since 2003. I don't buy any major news papers, only our local papers. The internet, the bbc, hell al jezeera has better information then you could ever get from faux liars network!
The only thing I can say without a doubt at this point is, republicanism is a mental illness! It is just unbelieveable how crazy these morons really are.

As a faithful viewer of the Senate Finance Committee hearings, I am surprised that to date the Republicans have not offered an amendment stating that no member of ACORN shall be eligible for any government funding related to health insurance.

Maybe they're afraid of being mocked by Stewart.

Something, of course, that House Republicans would never be bothered about.

I wouldn't my child singing "Barrack Hussein Obama".
I don't my child to have to sing, "Bush" either.
I don't care who OKed it.
It's intimidation.
It is indoctrination.

The president is an elected official serving presumably at the will of the people.
Nobody really knows what the president does - except send soldiers into undeclared wars.
And the current one hasn't done anything yet except get elected - and I think the celebration of that fact has run its' course.

And Stewart's comment about the kids singing because he's the "first black American president" is really off the mark. That's racist.

Oh, please, thou does protest far too much. Especially in respect to the two videos. And in the latter one, the texts of the songs were provided parents beforehand and no one objected. And it was less than a minute in duration in a musical program over 20 minutes long on the theme of "Great Americans"...

And what's "racist" about pointing out that there is historical significance in the election of our first black President. So, you're telling us that when every historian points it out, now and in the future,
it will be "racist"?

Anybody can point out a historical fact. No problem.
But making kids sing the name of the president over and over is a different story.

Would you want your kid to have to sing a little ditty like, "Bush, Bush, Bush" - for any goddam reason?

And as far as parents not objecting - you have to realize there is at least the potential for intimidation. "What - you commie terrorist sympathizer. You don't want your children to sing the name of the president of the United States"?

Obama is so intimated by this stuff he's wearing a fu-cking flag pin.

More or less agree with you until the very last bit. He's not actually black. He's a mulatto. If he is the first black president, then he is also the 44th white president. In actuality he's really just the first non-white president, which yes is historic.

Also as a side note, that said i don't mind so much blacks considering him black. I think as a social/ethnic/cultural group in this society they need that or could use it given the country's history, including modern history.

It's always good to see *ucker defending *OUR CHILDREN*
and the future of our great nation against the Muslim
hoards, the NAA, ACORN & the ACLU. He has finally found
a home among the Fox Hoes.

even know what Stewart is talking about?
During the last Jim Carey movie there wasn't a peep
of laughter during the first half. Then during
the second half everyone kinda realized that
they were supposed to laugh at a Carey movie so all of a sudden
they all started sporadic laughter...at all the wrong parts.

At the Michael Moore movie recently I heard nothing
from the crowd. I thought it was hilarious.
1. Maybe it's me. Could be.
2. Maybe it's also true they just don't get any part of it.
3. I once spoke to a guy born in this country who was very quick,
spoke two languages & perfect English. He told me everytime
he went to the movies he didn't understand what was happening.
His words "I understand what they're saying but I don't
understand the movie, it makes no sense. I only go to hip hop movies". I have a feeling he's not alone. I think the majority of young ppl have no idea about anything Stewart says. They
know who Obama is and that's about it. The smart
ones will say "he's doing satire" or "he's being
sarcastic". Really?
