Former CIA agent Jack Rice weighs in on whether we can trust the CIA and on the politics being played over the release of CIA torture briefings. Marcy Wheeler got a well deserved kudos from Keith for her work at Firedoglake on the subject.

Olbermann: On the torture briefings themselves, Hoekstra who has joined the chorus of anti-Pelosi outrage, Hoekstra himself says the CIA memo alleging that Pelosi was told about torture is wrong. "Our records suggest there may have been a few additional briefings" he wrote to the CIA in a letter released yesterday. And that's not even the only new question about the memo. Congressman David Obey revealed that the memo revealed that the memo names an appropriations committee aide as present at one briefing when the aide recalls being told he was not cleared to stay there.

This means he joins Democrats Jay Rockefeller and Bob Graham who have also questioned the memos accuracy in terms of dates and time.

And then there are the memo's self-apparent problems: No record of who gave at least seven briefings. Not quite sure when John McCain got briefed - late October. Not sure who the O'Keefe guy was who got the top-secret briefing...Michael?

And as journalist Marcy Wheeler points out, according to the CIA, Congressman Porter Goss got a briefing on March 8, 2005, even though he was not only no longer a congressman at the time, he was the director of the CIA.

[....]

Alright, Iran had nukes or had them, Iraq had WMD's and ties to al Qaeda, the Soviet Union would last into the 21st century, Nancy Pelosi was briefed about the term EIT's in 2002 even though the term was not used until 2006, and Porter Goss was the Director of the CIA. Which one of these things is not like the others?

About as far as you can throw 'em!

The question is not whether the CIA can be trusted, it is whether those setting policy for CIA action can be. They are still touting the deposing of Iran's Prime Minister and parliament in 1953 as a success.

And forget the CIA, it is just the "public" arm of covert operations. The real power is with the NSA and "black" agencies you have never heard of (and never will).

I'm sure the unwitting subjects of the CIA's secret 1960's LSD experiments might beg to differ on that question.

and THAT is why Kennedy was killed.

Jack Kennedy did more in one year to limit the power of the covert agencies than any other President. He saw the potential danger to American values that they represented.

Yeh, it pissed off Pappy enough to murder Kennedy for it. It was Pappy's playground and he didn't want any interference with his FASCIST PLAN for our future. That's when Cheney became his side-kick.

Didn't they also lie to people living in zones of high radiation as to whether there was harm or not to see what the results would be?

I'm not sure of this one, but it might've happened around the atomic bomb testing sites.

Who would 'trust" the CIA to do anything except look after its own interests, which obviously include self-preservation?

The CIA will lie to Congress. It is an agency of the Executive. Its loyalties are to the Executive (the Country? It is to LAUGH!).

I found this today while searching for something else. (isn't that the way it always works out?) A book titled "Legacy of Ashes". It was written in 2007. It's a history of the CIA. The author of the book won an award for this book. You can read a review about "Legacy of Ashes" here.

The agency has had it's problems and the author tells it straight.

Didn't the Federalists do something like that back in the day??? I'm Canadian and my full U.S. history may be lacking, but I thought they named themselves the Federalists even though they didn't want a Federation, since most people did and would associate with the name and get them more votes...

LibertyLover's picture

I have worked in the corporate world and have done my fair share of committee meetings for volunteer organizations. And usually, when an important meeting ever took place, a simple sheet of paper was passed around for the people in attendance to sign indicating their presence at the meeting. Especially if proprietary information was being discussed. That paper was then filed with the minutes of the meeting. Crikey! I am stunned that the CIA can be such poor record keepers.

Only when the last tree has died
and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught
will we realize we cannot eat money.

Volunteer organizations are held to a much higher standard than corporations and secret government agencies. Gotta watch out for those dangerous volunteers!

I think it is classic Neocon "fuck up by design" practice. These briefings were set-up for the purpose to frustrate people so much so it was hard to tell which end is up.

luis stoole's picture

these "records" just exemplify how well they do their job; afterall, sending out disinformation is what they do best. this was a purposeful oversight, and now they are using it on the american people. funny how what we do overseas finally happens at home, this is our "blowback".

No argument here. Speaking of blowback, I live in MN and the wind has been blowing like crazy for the last 3 days!

Of course they are misleading Congress. I doubt if they tell any president (whoever is president at the time) everything they are doing. The head of the CIA probably doesn't know everything. Wheels within wheels.

Just talking about this means that the Republicans have succeeded in getting the focus off of Cheney and how the whole torture thing started.
