Fox News' Megyn Kelly claimed last week that her network doesn't use Nazi references.

Since that's just flat out wrong, the ball was in Jon Stewart's court to call her out.

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) had made a speech on the House floor last week comparing a Republican plan to repeal health care reform to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

In an interview with Kelly, Democratic strategist Richard Socarides pointed out that Cohen wasn't the only one to invoke Nazis.

"If we want to get into who is heating this and overheating this, I mean every night on the very network we're on right now, the leading commentators on this network use this kind of language," he explained.

"That's not true, Richard," Kelly shot back. "I don't know if you sit and watch our programming every night, but I watch it every day, and you're wrong."

"Megyn, I watch it every day, too," Stewart noted. "12 long years. I think he might be right."

Comedy Central's staff quickly produced clip after clip to prove that Kelly was the one who was wrong.

"If you look back at what happened in Germany you cannot escape the similarities between what Hitler and his cut throats did back then and the hate-filled blogs, what they're doing now," Fox News' Bill O'Reilly said in Feb. 2008.

"There is an Obama supporter, he's got this book and this video out that are propaganda pieces," Fox News' Glenn Beck said in March 2010. "And I'm telling you, they would make Joseph Goebbels proud."

"The far left in this country, the zealots -- I mean these are zealots -- are Nazis," O'Reilly said in another clip.

In all, Stewart found about ten clips of with Nazi references. One example was even on Kelly's show.

"Well, true believers always make me a little nervous," Bernie Goldberg told Kelly in a segment about anti-war protesters Code Pink. "I am not calling these people Nazis. I want to make that clear, but they are not behaving like liberals. They are behaving like brown-shirted thugs."

"Aha!" shouted Stewart. "I'm not saying they're Nazis. I'm saying they are behaving like the soldiers Hitler used. Aha! Well, Ms. Kelly, don't you look ridiculous now?"

That wasn't just a smack down. It was a whack-them-over-the-head-with-a-shovel-and-bury-them-six-feet-under-massacre of Fox's BS.

Of course, Fox, being the shameless bunch that it is, will either completely ignore what Stewart did or spin it away with additional BS.

I can only imagine that some combination of money and true belief allows the folks at Fox to get up and face themselves in the mirror each morning. Any normal person would change their line of work or commit suicide.

The sad thing is, most of the Fox viewers don't (or probably can't) verify the "facts" that these ass-clowns present to them daily. So, if they get caught in a lie, they quickly try to weasel their way out of it, and then go on the warpath to discredit the source who called them out.

It is truly an eye-opener when a comedy channel becomes a source for credible news and fact-checking, when there are so many media entities out there whose job it is to do these things, but fail to do them.

Megyn Kelly has proven once again that her job is just to look pretty on camera and to regurgitate talking points, nothing else. Shame on her, and shame on her bosses!!

She regurgitates something else on her bosses in the back offices.

Jon tells the truth. Love it when he does stuff like this that is so right and so good.

and the false equivalency attack Stewart launched on Cohen earlier. This is just a corporatist plot from Viacom to lure disaffected Countdown viewers to its Daily Show reruns.

If that was a dig, subtle or otherwise, I'd suggest you have very thin skin. And Viacom is getting in digs against Olbermann to attract Olbermann fans? You might want to rethink that one.

Also, if you insist on making Nazi equivalencies - false or accurate - please learn how to pronounce Joseph Goebbels' last name correctly. Hint: It's not pronounced "Gurbals".

Isn't it funny that we have to go to the comedy channel to fact check some things? No other channel would have dared to call out fox on these things. Why is that?

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

speaking of Nazis...why is so hard to order "My enemies enemy" - the decades long love fest between the company and the butcher of Lyon klaus barbie documentary online? Is Paypal on the CIA payroll?

when the FCC (remember them?) would have required retractions of lies spread on Fux. Of course, in this day of cable, they're nothing but a pipedream. :(

Kreskin's picture

On a routine basis the right wing , the lunatics like Bachman , Beck and Limbaugh and thee imbecile of imbeciles falsely accuse the left , Obama , the Democrats , of being and doing exactly what they themselves are , the sheeples buy into it and it blinds them from seeing the truth , it is not by accident but part of their propaganda strategy and it's not a new tactic that they invented . It worked before and still works today . Joseph would be proud .

"The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all."

Taarak's picture

True. And any attempt to point that fact out will be met with "Both sides do it, then." They didn't start using this tact because the Nazi's did it, they use it because it works.

Kreskin's picture

Yup , "I know you are but what am I ? " , "both sides do it" , thus they are able to get away with it , and the public , at least the morons , cannot for the life of them see it . The really bad part is the supposedly straight MSM routinely comes up with the absolutely absurd and false equivalencies , further enabling the cons . The truth and the facts take second place to appearing fair and unbiased , convenient because this same corporate media just happens to have an interest in the right wing / neoconservatives agenda and in their success . We have an uphill battle to fight to say the least .

"The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all."

Taarak's picture

I think most people who can tell the difference between fact, opinion, and belief, have no trouble recognizing Fox for what it is. There are still those who, when the difference if pointed out to them, will see it. Then there are those who don't want to see the difference - and believe there is none. For this last group, there is no hope.

Broadcast frequencies are thought to belong to the public. At one time, the “price” for using these frequencies was the requirement that the public good be served in the form of news. The FCC regulated the news and required accuracy. This requirement was put into place in order to prohibit propaganda networks popping up all over the US they way they did in Germany. That requirement was a good idea back then, and it’s still a good idea today.

When you factor in cable, however, the game changes. “Free Speech” prohibits similar restrictions because cable does not belong to the public. Cable is private. That’s what enables propaganda networks like Fox to exist.

I doubt Stewart will ever outright refer to FOX as the Big Lie network, although he infers as much on a near nightly basis. That's his disconnect. All references to the political tactics of the Nazi party are inherently unjustified because... well, because Stewart says they are. But they're not, not by a long shot.

I wonder what term he would use to describe corporate interests that are wed to state power?

NOBODY 2012

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” -- Josef Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda, Nazi Germany

“The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly - it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.” -- Josef Goebbels

Only in this case it isn't the State but the right wingers who want to control it...

I'm so incredibly sick of all the whiners who can't stop complaining about Jon Stewarts so called "false equivalency." He does one or two bits that you don't entirely agree with, and instantly he is worthless and you simply MUST reply to every single video posted with whiny bitter bullcrap. Pick your battles and stop whining and shooting yourself in the foot by attacking bar none the best voice of reason in any mainstream media outlet right now.

The only reason Fox continues to used Nazi reference to paint progressives is that most of their demographic (age 60 up to choosing coffins) actually lived throught the the period of Nazi terror.

Their viewers never get the connection that connecting your opponents to an abhorrent evil deflects the fact that Fox itself is the propaganda organ of the brownshirt conservatives that are the real danger to our way of life. Essentially, Fox is the mouthpiece of corporate fascism. Keith Olbermann pointed that out every day, and now is silenced. How much longer will the corporatists allow even Jon Stewart to continue?
