Kyl threatens to use filibuster on next Supreme Court nominee
There not yet a vacancy on the Supreme Court but the second-ranking Republican in the Senate is already planning a strategy of opposing a President Barack Obama's potential nominee. Jon Kyl told Fox News' Chris Wallace that Republicans were prepared a nominee that was "overly ideological."
When Republicans were in the majority Kyl had decried use of the filibuster. "It's never been the case of until the last two years that a minority could dictate to the majority what they could do," Kyl said in 2005.
Since Democrats were the first party in decades to use the filibuster to block a judicial nominee, Republicans are within their rights to continue to use it, according to Kyl. Democrats blocked George W. Bush's nominee, Miguel Estrada in 2001.
"It is wrong and it shouldn't be done but I think you would agree if only one side is permitted to do it -- the Democrats and not the Republicans -- you have a very unfair system," Kyl said Sunday.
Justice John Paul Stevens told two newspapers that he would soon make his decision on whether or not he will retire this year. At least one Democratic Senator thinks the justice should wait.
"I think the gridlock in the Senate might well produce a filibuster which would tie up the Senate on a Supreme Court nominee. I think if a year passes there's is a better chance we could come to a consensus," said Specter.
Both Kyl and Specter appeared on Fox News Sunday.

It's like the idiotic strategy of being for off shore drilling. It was an attempt to convince some GOP Senators to vote for the climate bill, and it was an epic fail, like all of Obama's "overtures". You would think he would have finally gotten it after the stimulus and health care battles, but no.

I was for Obama, and the main reason I didn't want Hillary was because I thought it would be a repeat of her husband's presidency, where he was trying to placate Republicans every step of the way, and they impeached him for it. Obama has picked up the mantra of what Joe Conanson called "surrender, then negotiate". Give the Republicans practically (or everything) they want, and let them humiliate you on the political stage. You would think that Obama would realise the idiocy of this strategy, but nope.
Obama's presidency has been Clinton 2.0, when we needed an FDR type presidency.
There are those who never miss a chance to ballyhoo about Obama's "superior intellect". I, for one, am not convinced. One sure sign of intelligence is in not repeating an action that always fails. No matter how many times the wing-nuts knock him down he always bounces back up like one of those Russian dolls that keeps bouncing back up every time it's knocked down.
I thought that Obama would finally learn that those bastards have no intention to support him on anything. There even dissing him on his recent give-away to Big Oil. What the country needs now is REAL leadership, not "clever speeches".
Sen. jesse helms held up 300 of Clenis's court appointees, lower level, and then the repugs faulted Clenis for leaving them empty.

Kyl is one of the greatest hypocrites alive today. I just glanced at a column about how upset Kyl is with Michael Steel because of the way he has handled the RNC's finances and of course the lesbian bondage scandal that happened in California. Yeah, Kyl is upset that the story became public.

I wish that President Obama would appoint a firebrand liberal as a replacement to Justice Stevens (or any other vacancy), but I just don't see it happening. He will most likely play it safe and go with a middle of the road appointment.
No matter what, the conservatives are going to fight his appointment tooth and nail. Might as well make the fight worth it.

I watched this exchange this morning. I couldn't help but notice Wallace never used the term "Nuclear Option", which is where the term was birthed (regarding blocking SC nominees).
But most incredibly, while decrying that the Democrats did it in '95, Kyl actually argues that it is okay for the Republicans to get to use it at least once until they are Even Steven. Nyah, nyah.
