In what is surely the strangest ad thus far in the campaign season, a video on Herman Cain’s official YouTube page features the candidate’s chief of staff Mark Block earnestly pitching Cain and then slowly puffing on a cigarette.

Most of the text is pretty standard stuff: “Herman Cain will put United back in the United States of America,” “America’s never seen a candidate like Herman Cain,” etc. Of course, Block is paid to espouse those beliefs, but no matter.

The weirdness comes in during the last few seconds of the video: in a tight shot on Block’s face, he slowly drags a butt as songstress Krista Branch sings the tea party fave “I am America.”

They call it "the strangest video of the political season". I call it absolute genius. Where else could you see Tea Party paranoia/patriotism combined with the common man's absolute freedom to make bad personal choices like smoking?

The ad reminded many of the great character in the tv series X Files, The Smoking Man.

That's pretty weird, but it'll never top Carly Fiorina's "Demon Sheep" ad. :

That was awesome! I'm voting Cain!

...Cain can't maintain a logical line of thought for nearly a minute?

What a drag ... this guy is on our health care system.

Great. I'm trying to stop smoking and some guy is smoking in an ad. I'll sue you in England.

It sucks, never been so pissed off in my life. (bastards)

It is genius, because the startling image of Mark Block puffing his cigarette like he was trying to drown out the voices in his head has distracted everyone from the creepiness of Cain's stare with its almost psychotic gradual grin.

OtterQueen's picture

"I know what you look like naked."

Why the fucking cigarette?

Why?

debter's picture

Creepier than Mark Block the smoker is the Herman Cain the smiler... at the end...creepy. that said, all the liberal sites are advertising and calling attention to it giving him lots of free advertising.

hernan mccain will go the same way as grampy mccain, nowhere. America is too smart for this piece of shit party.

Is it the 21st century yet?

Mark Block here...
You know. the guy who was busted for voter fraud in Wisconsin, funded by "freedom" works and the fu@king Kock teasers, had to pay hefty fine, banned from working the state for three years..oh yeah, that god forsaken piece of political trash.
you know...that Mark Block.
What a fucked up country we've been saddled with..
Sorry for this but,I wish him a very Ayn Rand end of life experience.

Not only has this video gone viral it is all over the networks... Free publicity is better than fill in the blank?

...the rub.

Everyone has now seen this add. Unfortunately for Cain, it doesn't say anything. He should have put some kind of political message in his add.

Re: the koch-cain ad

It is the most ridiculous campaign ad ever... except for his other ad.

That was directed at what they perceive as the nanny state.

Very effective ad... Goes after the blue-collar midwestern vote.

I'm about as midwestern as you can hope for, and the people I talk to are pretty much creeped out by the ad, too. Three different people said that at first they thought it was a spoof ad, like some of the Saturday Night Live skits. (In fact, one said it would make a great SNL spoof, but that it was just plain weird if they were serious.)

Gene214's picture

I'm watchin' my TV, and a man comes on and tells me, how white Herman Cain can be. But he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes as me......

Ok, I took a few liberties with a Jagger/Richards classic

That was the creepiest political ad I've ever seen. Yes, it did remind me of X-files smoking man, but when cain comes on and Stares, stares stares, the the sneer/leer, made me shudder. It was creepy, man what is Wrong with him? He looks like a serial killer.

WTF

"Mark Block here. Since January, I've had the privilege of being the Chief of Staff to Herman Cain, and the Chief Operating Officer of the Friends of Herman Cain. Tomorrow is one day closer to the White House."

I bet if you dug into Mark Block's family history, you'd find his grandfather was the navigator aboard the RMS Titanic, or something like that...

rgnewton's picture

It is amazing how the Koch-Cain supporters are cheering for this ad. A new star is born: Mr. Mark Blockhead, whose smoking stint has gone viral.

Many smokers light up because they think it relieves stress. I think the stress of dealing with Koch-Cain day after day is the reason why he lit up at the end of the ad.

Smoke gets in your eyes...

spicegal's picture

it was down right creepy.

This ad is approximately 5% as creepy and weird as "He Carried Yellow Flowers":

You know...say what you want about Obama's policies, but at least I'm reasonably sure he's a human being. These Republican candidates are like the aliens in They Live.

moarku's picture

To this day I can't hear the words, "I Am America" without my mind filling in, "And You Can Too" right after it. Not even in song, apparently.

Tim REALLY misses Japan's picture

Which I also thought was pretty weird in the Cain ad.

"Better." It's what we should ask of ourselves and of our leaders.

opus132's picture

My wife lost her father to lung cancer back in the 70s, one of the most horrible experiences she ever went through. Since then, scores of thousands of lives have been saved thanks to concerted government action--laws, taxes, education initiatives etc. The government did what it was supposed to do, and an unimaginable amount of human suffering was averted. The success of our nation in its initiative to reduce smoking was an extraordinary success, and unassailable proof of the capacity of government to do good. All the right wing can say in response to this is to blather about the "Nanny State", which is of course pre-school name calling posing as a rational argument. No wonder they hate the no-smoking laws so much! The cigarette at the end of the ad is a telling symbol.

I agree. That is wild. I'm far from a Cain supporter, but kudos to Mr. Cain. Going over the top can be very entertaining. Self-confidence in spades, so to speak. No bullshit. Those are the gut reactions I got on first watching. I rewatched the movie Network the other night. The Cain commercial reminds me of that, with a big dollop of Bob Roberts thrown in.

The Most Awesome Campaign Ad Ever???
No it is not. Do you know about C.O.P.D.?, Have you ever experienced a headache or felt light-headed but couldn't figure out why? Maybe you're not getting enough oxygen? Well I have. Smoking is not funny at all. I hope you never have to suffer from it.
God bless President Barack Hussein Obama. He stoped smoking.
