The video is actually a compilation of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) making the analogy of the recent unrest in Egypt with what is going on in Wisconsin. The links and quotes are from Heather's earlier post on Ryan.

Speaking on Morning Joe Thursday morning, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) compared the current situation in Wisconsin, where Gov. Scott Walker (R) has inspired days of protests by proposing a budget that would remove key bargaining powers for public employee unions, to the recent unrest in Egypt that toppled the 30-year authoritarian rule of Hosni Mubarak, saying it's "like Cairo has moved to Madison these days."

..and another from NBC evening news where a protester in Madison makes the same comparison, albeit from the protesters point of view. Ryan seems to be equating Republicans austerity measures with the oppression of Hosni Mubarak in Egypt. And pointed out by many, including Andrew Leonard at Salon.com:

On Thursday morning Ryan topped that headscratcher with a real doozy: He compared the protests currently raging in Wisconsin over Gov. Scott Walker's plans to crush public sector unions to the upheaval that brought down President Mubarak in Egypt. [...]

But when a Republican legislator voluntarily places his own party in the position of Mubarak, you have to wonder what's in the tea these people are drinking. Yes, yes, I know conservatives are worried that democracy in Egypt could lead to the Muslim Brotherhood taking power. But to the vast majority of people on this planet who paid attention to what happened in Egypt, the protesters were the good guys and Mubarak was the bad guy. The sight of people gathering peacefully in Tahrir Square was incredibly inspiring.

Ryan sees riots and Cairo-style destabilization in the masses who have risen up in Wisconsin. But that's not what Democrats and union members and Americans who don't share the Tea Party ethos are seeing. They're seeing the dramatic, exciting beginning of a pushback against Republican over-reach. If Paul Ryan thinks it looks like Cairo, well then, maybe he's right.

Harold Meyerson at the Washington Post quipped that Walker was the "cheesehead pharaoh of Wisconsin."

Protesters have seized on the idea as well.

Of course this is not like Egypt. They have no camels in Wisconsin. I have not seen one camel or riders on horses.

Let's have a little fun with Mika. This morning they showed a security video of a club house and it showed a naked man running around in the house taking things. Seems he had stolen some things including sausage. Mika asked, "Where did he hide it?" It took her about 15 seconds to realize what she had said and then she was so embarrassed she couldn't show her face. I didn't know I could laugh that hard that early in the day.

...right here in Madison. The Zor Shrine gives free camel rides to the kids at the Henry Vilas Zoo every Sunday in the summertime. Probably won't let anyone borrow one, however.

Lindsey and a democrat are the headliners on one of the shows. I think Walker would be much happier on Fox than any other show.

There was a guy on fox who said he is organizing a pro-Walker demonstration for tomorrow and that groups were bringing in people from all over the state and perhaps the country. This is where it could get ugly but I sure hope not.

This is pure Rove--get them used to it in baby steps, and then drop the big bomb. I smell Rove and his minions all over this. The GOP is proactive, while we are reactive. This also seems like a Dem strategy meant to set the GOP up for the 2012 elections. Let the GOP have their heads on every issue unopposed, essentially, and then use the damage they have either accomplished or proposed against them later. It's the "accomplished" part that is worrisome. They are playing political games with people's lives.

Did you watch Rachel last night? According to her this is about doing away with unions, the biggest voting bloc and contributors to the democratic party. When the Supreme court said corporations had the same rights as people the biggest contributors became corporations. In 08 unions were like the second and third biggest contributors but now with the Supreme's ruling the unions are now like sixth and lower.

But it looks like Obama may have finally pulled his head out of the sand an at least acknowledged what is being done to the unions, and thanks to Rachel the actual words have been said out loud so the Main part of MSM will have a hard time not addressing it.

If Fox is pushed un and people like Rachel to have to slam unions day after day to rebut the spineless dims and MSM, they will be alienating a goodly chunk of their blue collar red neck viewers who used to be Democratic.

More than just baby steps. This is the party of “Deficits don’t matter”. They created the budget deficit. They overspent for decades. They robbed SS. And NOW they are using the deficit – they’re greatest weakness – in an attack against the opposition.

“Use your greatest weakness/vulnerability against your opponent.” Yeppers, it has Rove written all over it.

US Businesses, Republicans and Conservatives, believe they are a Monarchy, by way of there Wealth, they believe they have the Right, to take Workers Rights, and keep there Rights, they believe workers are surfs, peasants and subjects and they treat them that way in their businesses and a workers Union is insult and assault, on their Monarchy, all derived from the Money, position.

How dare a worker, want to maximize his profit, his wages, how dare you that is a right and privilege of the Wealthy Business person and in Wisconsin, were here to take that Right away and return workers to serfdom and peasant, as a subject of the Business Monarchy.

Remind anyone of the British Crowns attitude toward, upstart Americans?

Oh, and TPublicans are Overseer’s, who do there bidding, but sometimes are flummoxed about, their Jobs.

The Chamber and the Manufacturers Alliance are BUSINESS UNIONS and have Lobbyist, just like Workers Unions. Business Unions have ten to twenty times the money for political lobbying than Workers/Labor Unions have and if they can kill Workers Unions and Rights, they will cripple Democrats Political abilities and that is the focus of the Republicans, they cannot get enough “we the people” to vote for them, with out fear and Cultural, Race and Faith attacks.

They NEVER mention that PRIVATE sector emnployees get HIGHER SALARIES the PUBLIC sector employees. Those in the public sector are told "its the benefits" and that makes up for the pay gap.

Cutting the benefits IS CUTTING THEIR/OUR pay...

and it is done all in the name of destroying the middle class.

it is the medical inflation associated with the benefits that gives an appearance that public employees are benefitting.

Where is the Democratic Party? Well, they are attempting to give the GOP everything they want, but, as we all know, it will never be enough.

On the federal level, cost of living increases are gone, salary increases are gone, a hiring freeze is in effect, and furloughs are being discussed. This is happening even though the GOP has not had their own opportunity to slash spending yet: this is a warm up freebie.

By the way, I really hope that the GOP continues to compare the Wisconsin protesters to the protesters in Egypt. What an honor. Hopefully, they get the same result.

... the piece from Greta van Susteren from last night when she interviewed a HS student (Jacob Fiksel) who made more sense, and acted more mature than the repugs in Wisconsin.

Seems like there are children in the State Senate and the Senators are in kindergarten.

I'm in the car yesterday listening to Thom Hartmann and it was Russ Feingold he was speaking with and the conversation came up about the Citizens United case and it's effects on organized labor coupled with unions. ( my emphasis) Mr. Hartmann ran the idea past Mr. Feingold the idea of a constitutional amendment of ridding us of Citizens United. The conversation went back and forth until Mr. Hartmann proposed a simple word introduction to the 14th amendment that would strip corporations of the right to be considered people.

Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws

To;

Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of "natural" citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Russ agreed wholeheartedly with the proposal. What say you all?

Really the private sector employees are getting screwed over health care and pensions..

But Ryan et alii turn it around so that they can give more to their wealthy backers..

And of course he soft pedals collective bargaining rights..
