Washington State Senate Passes Same-Sex Marriage Bill
Looks like there'll soon be a seventh state where equality under the law is recognized.
via KING5 and the Associated Press:
OLYMPIA, Wash.-- The Senate has voted to pass a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in Washington state Wednesday.
The Senate passed the bill on vote of 28-21. Four Republicans crossed party lines and voted with majority Democrats for the measure. Three Democrats voted against it.
The measure now moves to the House, which also has enough votes to pass the bill. Governor Chris Gregoire has said she will sign the bill if it gets to her desk.
"People have been working on this for over a decade in Washington state," said Zach Silk of Washington United for Marriage. "It's extremely exciting that we're on the cusp of history." The coalition dropped off nearly 26,000 postcards from registered voters who support gay marriage, to each legislators' district.

I can't stand to listen to these bigots. I hope they don't get enough signatures to put it on the ballot.

It is a sad commentary on how many sick, stupid, evil ass holes there are in this country.
With all the real problems in this country today, this get's their gander up.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
is to have been born with a specific sexual orientation, on a specific geographical location, to parents of a specific race. That's it.
This is why gays, immigrants, or minorities having equal rights drives them nuts. Because any of those takes away just about the only thing that makes these idiots "special."
CTHULHU 2012 "Why vote for a lesser evil?"
Washington will be the first state where the people will vote for gay marriage.
We'll win the vote with a comfortable margin, because unlike California, Washington is a progressive state without a lot of minorities (who unfortunately generally oppose marriage equality).
Reuters "report" is really oddly worded. This is NOT a "Gay Marriage Bill..." This IS a Marriage Equality Bill! It's a Civil Rights Bill! It's an Anti Discrimination Bill!
Fuck Reuters

would be one of the first states to do this. They have a pretty cool live and let live attitude from what I've seen. Good on 'em.

I was all teary-eyed watching him be interviewed about his struggle, while his partner proudly looked on.
I don't know how I'll handle all the hate talk from the 'christians' who will try to collect enough signatures to get this overturned, once our governor signs it into law
me-oww!
20 years from now most people will look back and wonder why people opposed marriage equality.
At the same time the least of the knuckle draggers will be saying: golly gee-whizz! We could have gotten them to settle on civil unions but we were too greedy and wanted to punish those who did not measure up to our way of life.
'Talk to the hand'
I've wondered that for decades.

on the level of self awareness of these knuckle draggers.
CTHULHU 2012 "Why vote for a lesser evil?"
Washington State!!!
I second that!
Why does anyone ever have to vote to legalize something that is not expressly forbidden by law? Or are there anti-gay laws on the books? Are these overturning them?
There is language that is used in the WACs and RCWs that will change with this law.
Ok, sorry. Washington Administrative Code and Regulatory Code of Washington.
... because I understand legalize to mean "to remove laws prohibiting something..." So, basically, gay marriage is not prohibited by law, but by administrative regulation.
Now if we can just make it stick. Within an hour of the announcement that we had 25 votes the phone started ringing with an opposition push poll. The money bombs will be going off the charts.
The next nine months of howling about how the law will violate the rights of the Church to control all people's lives, whether they are a member of the Church or not. Rather like the outrage the Bishops are currently expressing over having to obey the law with regard to insurance covering birth control for their employees.
"Uhhh...now you gunna see people marryin' sheeps and and goats and..." quoth the old featured asshole on tonight's news.

This is another grand accomplishment, in the process of of equality. However, only a small fraction of the states alloww marriage equality.
What value is this when our federal government mandates that there are absolutely NO federal benefits to this state's heroic decision? No tax equality, No social security equality. Over 900 points of equality are denied by our federal government - headed by a Democrat in the presidency and a Democratic controlled Senate.
Why are Democratic politicians (the leaders of two out of three divisions) NOT standing up for our equality?
Sorry to be somewhat dour; but, it's hard to celebrate the removal of a splinter on your toe, when the house remains collapsed upon you. Equality is NOT equality if the federal government deems you a second-class citizen.
And after 5000 years of discrimination, (or in my case, a lifetime) it doesn't fly to accuse..."You want it all immediately. You impertinent child, Obama can't change the world in only 3+ years!" Yes, if he chose equality, he could. Stop defending our metaphorical "master". Master ain't doin' nothing more than what he's been forced to do. Master isn't even doing what the majority of Americans want. Master is the Status Quo - don't go fooling yourself becuase of his skin color or his empty words. Master is empowerd to change all that and he CHOOSES to not endorse marriage equality. He is doing the least he can do, not the most!
Master ain't getting my vote for continued submission. Rocky Anderson may not be perfect, but he is as "left" as the 1% allow.
