Rep. Lynn Jenkins Laughs at Uninsured Single Mother, Son
By scarce Tuesday Sep 01, 2009 11:00amMike Nellis at the Kansas Democrat's blog has more idiocy from this fast rising star of the House Republicans. When asked by a single mother who cannot afford health care and doesn't qualify for Medicaid or SCHIP what her alternatives were:
Jenkins' response? A hardy laugh and the words "go be a grown up."
This compassionless, bureaucratic exchange between Smith and Lynn Jenkins' was luckily caught on tape. The footage is incredible in it's detachment from the dire situation that is our health insurance crisis.
Transcript:
Elizabeth Smith: I’m a 27 year-old single mother. I work full-time. I do not have health insurance. My employer does not provide health insurance to me and I cannot afford it privately. Why shouldn’t my government guarantee all of its citizens health care?
Jenkins: Thank you. I’m sorry, maybe you missed my opening remarks, but absolutely. That’s why we have Medicaid in the current system and that’s why under the alternative proposal we have an option for low-to-modest-income people to be able to afford health care and then we’ve got the SCHIP program for children. I think we’ve got all of the bases covered.
Audience member: She’s not covered under SCHIP!
Jenkins: OK, if you’re not then you’re the perfect example for why we need reform and why we need it now but we have to do it right and if we can do an alternative proposal, as I’m suggesting, give you the money to go buy it in a reformed marketplace where it is affordable, that’s my preference rather than to saddle the nation with yet another government program when they can’t afford the government run programs we have.
Elizabeth Smith: I want an option that I can pay for. I work. I pay my bills. I’m not a burden on the state. I pay my taxes. So why can’t I get an affordable option. Why are you against that?
Jenkins: A government run program (laugh) is going to subsidize not only yours (laugh) but everybody in this room. So I’m not sure what we’re talking about here.
Jenkins: I think it comes down to the whole discussion of...(The crowd erupts. At this point, it's safe to say even they aren't buying Jenkins position...)
Jenkins: OK folks. Let’s be respectful. UH-OH (talking over crowd). We’re gonna make time for everybody. We’re gonna all listen to each other respectfully, even if we disagree. I think we can agree we need reforms, again it’s just how we gonna do it. I believe people should be given the opportunity to take care of themselves with an advanceable tax credit to go be a grown-up and go buy the insurance.

Know if she takes MONEY from the health care(?) people. so many of OUR people in washingtion are on the health care paycheck, its no wonder they don't want any change. Don't fuck with our money. We will tell you if You need that. If not, you die, so our money stays with us. Your operation might cost me my new boat, or new car, or a 5th home. Like I give a shit about you over my way of life.
By the way, the dential insurance dose not have a pre-existing clause: its called; missing tooth clause. I know because they will Not fix my crown-bridge. because I was missing the tooth befor we got their insurance. fucking assholes.

She took $15K from the insurance industry and $12K from health professionals.

jenkins can take her rethuglican head
and shove it back up her corporate hole.
she can laugh all she wants, when
election comes, let's hope this event
gets televised repeatedly to expose
her selfish insensitivity to her electors.
perhaps if we paid this whore $28K, she might her change her vote?
That the elected officials , the news personal and persons creating our laws are in a different wealth class then that of most Americans..They have no problems with their jobs , salary , benefits and buying anything they wish..
OR, their share from the lobbyist funds is too great a temptation for they to resist..
We are at the point now ,, where we have the ""HAVE""" and The ""HAVE-NOTS""
And it looks as if the "Have" are running the news and the policies of our government..
But if this economy keeps falling down this hill created by the previous administration , there will be more and more "HAVE-NOTS""
hope" comment last week?
The one and the same. She's competing for the May spot in the GOP's Women Who Hate Women calendar.

Second only to the "feels like real" Sarah Palin Doll.
One of my repig friends got one. It feels like netted salmon and smells like decayed wolf hide.
Wait a minute...maybe they nailed it. Hmmmmm....
I think she's in contention for Great White Dope.
It's even more sinister than not fucking with their money. If you "follow the money" in Jenkins argument, she wants the government to give people some kind of "payment" so they can "buy" insurance. If you track that money, the government would just be handing over a paycheck to the insurance companies. WOW. Insurance companies get even fatter with profits, they can continue to deny care and do whatever they want, and they have figured out a way to reap profits from people that have previously been uninsured. And would someone explain to me how Jenkins plan of the government giving people money to buy insurance isn't going to cost the government money???
Exactly. Representative Jenkins and most of the other critics in Congress of “another government program when they (sic) can’t afford the government run programs we have” are very much in favor of those potions of the different healthcare bills that will require everyone to have health insurance. Only they, Representative Jenkins and her ilk, want each and every one of us to have nowhere else to turn to buy that required health insurance but from for profit insurance companies. I think I’m like a great many people in America. I’m happy with my doctor, but I hate having to deal with my insurance company. If the political will isn’t there to enact a single payer system, then at the very least we need a strong public option.
Why republicans and conservatives make me want to barf. My taxes go towards "your" wars and HUGE defense budget and the privatized military's no-bid contracts, but if "my" taxes have to go towards saving lives instead of destroying them, then I'm a bleeding-heart liberal? What in the hell is wrong with this country?!
I couldn't say it any better myself. Thanks!
Isn't THAT special?
Excellent point! Right wingers are all for taking your money if it's a cause of their own, like killing other people, preferably if they're not white.
I am trying to get reelected and need all the insurance lobbying money I can get! You loser, and your brat kid loser too!
Next!
Basic Republican approach - I've got mine, you can't have any because I might not be able to get more.
And I got mine all on my own with no help from anyone(except the nice house I grew up in because of a FNMA loan, and the government loans/grants I used to go to college and the jobs I got because my daddy helped, and the fact that my folks could help me financially because Grandma has social security and medicare and . . . )
What an extremely ugly person Ms. Jenkins is. Sickening.
and a friggin bitch too!
Here she says:
"I’m suggesting, give you the money to go buy it in a reformed marketplace"
Then she says:
"that’s my preference rather than to saddle the nation with yet another government program when they can’t afford the government run programs we have."
What the fuck is the difference (other than handing money to insurance companies, which of course is her idea of "marketplace")??
Stupid whore. I guess math is not her strong point..
bitchassho to that too!
a stankasshobitch.
That was a heartless response to a heartfelt question. This shouldn't be a surprise to working class Americans. The Republican establishment doesn't care one bit about the middle class. Now if this woman was a business owner, I am sure she would have had her undivided attention.

Is it just me or is the "Idiocracy" spews like wildfires?
Jenkins ultimately admits that she prefers an alternate proposal wherein the gov't "give(s) you the money to go buy it in a reformed marketplace where it is affordable... rather than to saddle the nation with yet another government program"
How is she going to reform the healthcare market and make it affordable without govt intervention? Sounds great, but where are the details? Does her conservative base agree with govt controlling the marketplace this way?
Typical - shoot down the current proposals without offering a solution of their own. She might just as well have offered up a proposal to 'do what makes sense', which likely would have been met with thunderous, yet idiotic, applause.
heh...she prefers an alternative program that "gives you money" to go buy private health insurance.
LOL. Of course! Brilliant. That money simply gets harvested off the money tree!
These morans take stupidity to new levels every day.
the healtcare industry corporate world, and their lobbyists, can keep giving her money... she's got it coming both ways! what a gal!!
if progressives want to win on this and other issues...then let's do what the GOP begged us not to do.
Wage class warfare.
Show THIS and every other video we've garnered from these debates. Use them often...over and over again.
Wage class warfare!
I'm in!
Michele Bachmann's latest insanity on health care reform: "This cannot pass. What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing. This will not pass. We will do whatever it takes to make sure this doesn’t pass."
How's that for a bipartisan approach? Reaching across the aisle to her could be dangerous. You might draw your hand back with a slit wrist.
Yeah, I saw the slit her wrist thing earlier today. Let her have at it.
Bachmann might not want to think about slicing her wrist even to be blood brothers. It might be seen as a mass suicide attempt by the insurance companies and they won't cover that. lol
Bachmann's pre-existing condition... Craaaazy!!! They definitely won't cover her if she slits her wrist or wrists...
If she becomes a danger to herself through self mutilation, she can be involuntarily committed.
It's worse than that POP. She doesn't believe in wearing a condom when she shakes your hand.
Let's do this blood brother thing Bachmann. If I'm not there though start without me. You can trust me, honest....
to write out a check for $22,000 for a 12 hour ER visit plus $15,000 for a weeks recovery in the hospital your like a loser or something is that the point?
Jenkins stated: "....as I’m suggesting, give you the money to go buy it in a reformed marketplace where it is affordable,...."
Just where exactly is that money to give her going to come from? The result will be the same either way and will result in even more government red tape and restrictions. That money will either come directly from the government or it will result in lost government revenue due to a tax credit. That is, if she or anyone else even qualify to get that tax credit in the first place which never is a guarantee.
Jenkins' health care reform ideas are to much of a nightmare to even think about.
Money spent on a government program to help people is wasted and contributes to the deficit. Money given to corporations (whether to buy bombs or sub-standard health insurance) is part of the "free market".
I hope someone called her on that in the audience.
But it just shows their agenda, we won't take tax payer dollars to provide a single payer system that covers everyone, we'll reward the insurance companies that have been fucking people over for 50 years with the SAME tax payer money.
Jesus H Christ on a fucking pogo stick. Where does this stupid bitch come from?? And who voted for her??
haave the most votes for those the corporatist want in office. It's a given.
I forgot that she is also the one who recently made the "great white hope" comment, in referring to someone who would replace Obama.
She represents some of the worst of the Repuglican party; she represents some of the worst of the human race.
Did you see the piece Keith did on her last night? He blistered her regarding her not knowing the history of the great white hope. He nailed her with the stupid nail.
Yeah, that was great!
I'm sure Keith will really rub it in after this video.
I just cannot believe the idiots out there.
I sent Ms. Jenkins an email....I really hope it goes through but not sure it will because it only allows you to pick the state of Kansas. It said it took, but I'm not really sure.
.
Your framing of this clip is so biased as to be dishonest. Lord knows the debate over this issue is completely fucked - and in general, I am certainly not inclined to give a Republican the benefit of the doubt on anything having to do with this debate. But this clip has none of the sneering, contemptuous dismissiveness, nor the group disdain for a hypocritical politician, that you impart to it in the framing commentary.
There are people there who applaud Jenkins' statement about not "saddling the nation..." with another "... program we can't afford..." The "crowd eruption" is a few people arguing back and forth - you can clearly hear people engaging in commentary such as "it's not my job to pay for your health care" and the like.
I personally support at least a public option if not a single payer system. And I think there are examples aplenty of Republicans saying disingenuous, mean-spirited, dishonest, and outright stupid things about the issues on the table in this debate. This is not really one of them.
I disagree with everything she says, but she is not saying it in a particularly eventful or disagreeable manner.
it's dead in the water.
Wrong.
You agree with Jenkin' logic that a plan wherein the govt "gives you the money to go buy it in a reformed marketplace where it is affordable..." is better than one which "saddles the nation with yet another government program"...!?!?
No worries...they will pray and pray...and the money tree will bloom! It's easy to find too...it's next to the Jesus bush....or jenna bush...or jenna's bush...or somethin' like that.
From my original post:
Was I unclear?
Don't care for the homophobic use of the word gay as a negative. I don't give a damn either about the person's intent of use and that's it's part of mainstream slang.
It's offensive.
that you're an inconsiderate ignorant bigot.
to justify your bigotry--you just had to trot out that old chestnut 'too bad you are so afraid of words'! Well, too bad, yourself, MikeD. You are so busted, dude.
Sure, you can use any words you want, but if it walks like a duck, if it quacks like a duck...
My goodness! Please, try taking personal responsibility for the words or phrases you choose to use, as well as the context in which you use them.
BTW, I think people who use 'bitch' and 'pussy' in the same manner should take personal responsibility for their own bigotry.
You have every right to use any of those words in any context, but you should not whinge if someone calls you a bigot as a result of your personal decision to be a bigot.
The "eruption" was Lynn saying "UH, OH!" really loud and treating the audience like children.
I, too, thought this post tended toward hyperbole. However, after listening to the clip twice, I realize that Jenkins was only a wee bit subtle with her condescension--but, condescend she did.
Furthermore, when a member of the audience put her on notice that this young mother did not qualify for SCHIP, Jenkins throws out a rather unrealistic 'plan' to "...give you the money to go buy [insurance] in a reformed marketplace where it is affordable..." From whence does Jenkins think this money will come, out of her arrogant piehole?
IMHO, Jenkins' condescending attitude ("go be a grown up") is all the more dangerous because of its subtlety. Far too many of us are willing to give such subtlety the benefit of the doubt, and we can no longer afford to do so. We must hold such politicians accountable for their words and actions, and eliminate such disdain from the public discourse.
But I do have a job
Then get another job!
But I have second job
Then get another job!
"That's uniquely American."--name the culprit that made THAT inane statement.
Hmmm...is it a Republican? Hmmmm...oh wait...you could be a redneck Republican...oh sorry...then he/she wouldn't have ANY job...and collectin' a gubmint check...and screamin' about socialism.
"Where was the government when I was collecting my food stamps and welfare check?"
Limbaugh.
inane culprit who mocked Karla Faye Tucker's plea for clemency?
The same inane culprit who as a child stuck firecrackers into frogs' mouths and threw them into the air to watch them explode?
The same inane culprit who helmed the cabal that lied our nation into the illegal invasion of a sovereign nation?
That inane culprit?
"I believe people should be given the opportunity to take care of themselves with an advanceable tax credit to go be a grown-up and go buy the insurance."
Yes,that's what your political ideology dictates.
Funny thing about that? You and your friends were overwhelmingly rejected by the voters in the last election precisely because of your failed ideology. It is your adherence to this market based greed driven political mindset that has bankrupted America and left it's citizens vulnerable to War and Disease and Homelessness.
Shut up, buy stuff, pay your bills, and don't annoy anyone.
Wow! That was a real smack in the face. A woman working to support her child and cannot get health care. This is exactly everything that is wrong with our health care system.
Jenkins did not offer one, single, sensible solution for this woman.
Seems for a lot of republicans being greedy and insane is required. No wonder we soft tree-hugging liberals can't get anything done, we're just too rational and considerate.
What I find amazing is the way so many people equate the ability to shop for a particular health insurer with "freedom" as if it were equivalent to freedom of speech or religion. Its a testimony to the propaganda war the right has waged at least since the 80's that they have managed to get working class people to think this way.
There is a man who gets it!
ha ha ha right.
the Government works for the Corporations not we the people.
We the People should get down on our knees and show proper thanks to those corporations that bestow our livelihoods on us.
Just as our elected officials do.
whats good for Wall Street is good for America.

themselves.

I believe people should be given the opportunity to take care of themselves with an advanceable tax credit to go be a grown-up and go buy the insurance.
------------------------------------------------------
Jenkins, were you given the opportunity to use your own money for your election or did other people and healthcare industries raise it for you?
that. She doesn't have to.
What is the difference between a government run program and a program where the government gives you money to go out and buy insurance. Either way the government is "saddled with the bill. The difference is the repugnacans want the government money going into the pockets of the insurance company execs instead of paying for actual health care.
The difference is the government isn't skimming at least 20% off the top of your premiums for profit and bonuses. That 20% could actually go towards tests and patient care. Imagine a world where mamograms are actually covered.
Heave sigh...
Well, as long as Viagra is covered, what's the big deal?
It's clear that if you ask ONE question from a real world point of view that NOT A SINGLE REPUBLICAN THUG has got any answers!! They think they are all prepared for the un-washed masses when they receive their booklet of talking points from the Cheeney-Steele book shelf BUT..they end up looking like the one-layer think swill merchants they really are and have been from the beginning.
They need to be exposed EVERYDAY for the shallow, I-don't-give-a-crap-about-my-constituents pedestal they perceive themselves on and get knocked off that pedestal into the real world...All scum all the time...
President Obama simply needs to to take control of this. President Obama is looking as though, if he hasn't already, lost control of his own agenda. As much as I hate to say this, I am beginning to wonder if We as a People are yet again being manipulated. These Town Hall meetings are starting to prove a waste of time and money. The reality is if Congress had their way, Health Care Reform would not even be discussed, little more than be a bill that is to be voted on. As far as any meaningful HCR is concerned, Congress is not a friend of the people.
growing number of clockers and watchers doubt he can get it back.
passing a strong public option to reform health care insurance cost will be beneficial for everyone. NO it's not a handout. people will pay for health care insurance for being a member of a large PAYing pool. the romance of individuality is going to further worsen this crisis. it's a fact that health care insurance cost will double in 10 yrs. this cost will further encourage "outsourcing". this rise in cost for health care is NOT sustainable. this reform is a economic necessity. this is reform for everyone. FOOLs.
your referring to the Right Wing Version of Individuality which is believing your not actually dependent on or connected to anyone or anything and do it "all by urself wit no ones help!"
Which is a total joke of course.
the current health care insurance system is producing an unsustainable amount of people losing in the economic system 60% of bankruptcies are related to medical bills/cost. that burden is shifted to tax payers. of course there's 'nothing wrong with individuality' but the romance of Darwinian Capitalism....."every person for themselves" is going to further destroy the collective whole. the chinese understand collectiveness. corporations/businesses will continue to outsource which makes this country more vulnerable. the notion that we will adapt and the market will adapt without intervention is ridiculous.
Is this whore on the ActBlue site where we're going to support the opponents of DINOs Rahmie's MF, PUKIES infiltrating the Democratic Party???
starting with you, asshole. How dare you laugh at a struggling person.
All Congress people should have to give up their plans, and be supported in the EXACT SAME WAY the people they represent are treated.
Until they have parity with US, we won't get parity with them. It's that simple, it boils down to THEY HAVEN'T GOT A FUCKING CLUE.
did he say it was great that person had to work three jobs to support their family.
There's a serious disconnect on the part of most Republicans and Conservatives that they have no clue what it means to be in the middle class or below.
Oh...c'mon. They see the middle class everyday...from the windows of their limos.
worthless riffraff.
other.
It's a matter of CLASS. Ruling Class Elite, v the rest of us...
It's not an ideological warfare anymore... it's class warfare.
Have's vs. the have nots. The Have lots vs. the Have's.
To top it off the control of the media by the elites and the upper class dictate the message or the propaganda that is readily bought by those that continue to vote against their own best interest.
“This is an impressive crowd: the Have's and Have-more's. Some people call you the elites. I call you my base.”
W
It's time to wage class warfare.
It's time for US to use OUR organizations...not in support of a party in any way...but in support of ideals.
bitches that used to go around taunting girls who didn't "fit in".
But I bet the boys did.
but I know the girls you are talking about. They made my life a misery, a living hell from 2nd grade thru senior year.
Roast in hell, tormentors.
my high school tormentors are either in jail, prison or full-blown alcoholics. I feel bad for their kids, but geez they (not the kids, although the apples don't fall too far) were assholes.
Sounds like he has his biology backwards,
Guys are supposed to fit into girls.
I didn't fit in, and what made it worse, I didn't care.
"Jenkins: I think it comes down to the whole discussion of...
(The crowd erupts. At this point, it's safe to say even they aren't buying Jenkins position...)"
To me it sounds much more that the crowd is against that single mother. 2 people even said " it is not our job to pay for your health care"
Face it, the majority is against universal health care.
No, it's an indication of ignorance. Who do they think pays for unemployment insurance, Social Security, highway maintenance, child services.
Gosh...a country of MORANS.
Leadership is about doing what's right. not what's popular.
It might only redound against her if the woman she taunts and despises is/was white...
If she'd been white, I doubt she'd have gotten that answer.
So I reckon Ms. Smith is/was "non-white," and safely dissed...
Addendum: Just saw the vid. The woman IS white. But as a single mom, she's obviously a hoor, and therefore on a parallel step with a negro...
Everytime I hear this 'bootstrap' discourse, i wanna open Raygun's crypt and shit on his corpse...
The most disingenuous statement she made. If people could take care of themselves they wouldn't need insurance. What people want out of insurance is pretty fucking simple, but private insurance complicates the fuck out of it so they can weasel out later. We want freedom from this type of abuse and fraud, dummies.
I think she's laughing cuz she knows she's fucked and that this is going to look real bad, to which it did. Jenkins knows that there's nothing they can do for this woman given their stance save for telling her that she needs to pull herself up by the bootstraps and get into a better financial situation somehow. Easier said than done.
Their cheap answer to this is that their neighbors should be pitching in to help. In other words, "I'm passing the buck and praying someone else helps you, but I'm not going to". And when they say neighbors should help, it means that religious organizations step in to help and force you to convert to their beliefs so you can get relief. There's always a catch with these guys.
The more vids I see on C&L of American intelligence levels, the more I wonder, how in the hell did you people ever get it together enough to become the world's only superpower, and richest nation? It's no wonder your empire is on the decline! Wow. Just wow. And these idiots, both the crowd and the Rethuglican ditz, actually think there is some kind of boogeyman reform going to happen that will threaten their "insurance companies"?!? Yikes. You sure can't fix stupid.
Lots and lots of guns.
That and socialized programs.
We didn't get bombed flat during WW II.
The rest of the world was in ruins, in 1946.
Except in the Americas.
And we OWNED the Americas, all of them (y'all, too, though I know it's unpleasant to contemplate).
It is not that hard to become the world's greatest power when you're it's ONLY undamaged one.
to sit on that high horse. Feels good doesn't it?
That depends, doesn't it, if it's high on weed or horse?
These guys are basically saying "Shouldn't have got cancer or broken that arm." This only confirms my belief that Republicans have ZERO respect for anyone in the poor/middle class. All they care about is money. Disgusting.
It is clear as a blue sky (at least to me)...that the Republicans have no intention of getting the peoples business done towards the Nations better interests, as a whole. What is painfully clear is this: their intention to crucify this President at any cost.
They are not fooling anyone...except the ill informed, ill educated, and the last dying breed of racist populous.
It is plain to see what their agenda really is...for those that can see through their kindergarten playbook.
They hate the fact that they lost the last election...and to a Afro-American.
man seems to have many of their policies, just prettied up to make smell better. So far anyway, it seems that Rethuglican Lite (TM) is the winning team. Don't understand why there is so much drama and theatrics going on, when this damn administration shows very few signs of difference from a Rethuglican administration. Wait till the final bill is dropped off at the Whitehouse. It will look like it was handpicked by the Rethuglican Party. Mark my words.
Personally, I would prefer it if they just said "Look, we get our money and our orders from the insurance companies. They matter, you don't. End of discussion."
Maybe then the sheeple will stop and think, and something might get done. Maybe.
What we just saw there is the status quo death panel that needs reformed.
1. It is bad to subsidize everybody's health care
2. ... "But we have to do it right and if we can do an alternative proposal, as I’m suggesting, give you the money to go buy it in a reformed marketplace where it is affordable, that’s my preference rather than to saddle the nation with yet another government program when they can’t afford the government run programs we have."
Uhm, stupid Republican, either way will cost the government and taxpayers money.
The Republican Healthcare Plan
1) Grow a money tree
2) Ask your neighbors to help you
If 1 or 2 are not effective, please die quietly.
than just strongly objecting to a yet another government program that we cannot afford. The entire Afghanistan & Iraq Conflicts were not only on borrowed money (not supported by taxes), nor supported by shared pain and patriotism (not supported by a universal draft), but also not even on the government's books as line-item expenses in the budget. How uncharacteristically fiscally non-conservative of our (current) deficit concern trolls.
Could it be, is it possible, that a greatly expanded VA system or Medicare system would so burden the current American health care system that our "royalty" -- those bought-and-paid-for politicians and those oligarchs that bought them -- might not want the additional competition for doctors & hospital resources (time, testing equipment, and hospital beds) that currently permits them any type of elective surgery or treatment at the drop of a hat? How so very special.
It's the "let them eat cake" syndrome, only 220 years after another revolt against oligarchs (14 july 1789 storming of the Bastille in France.
Fascist oligarchs never change, never learn, and always destined to repeat history ...
Fascist oligarchs never change, never learn, and always destined to repeat history ...
Cooool...does that mean the peasants get to do pillaging and torching and beheading!!
I love that part!!!
8^)
First, a definition, from www.dictionary.com:
Second, the first sentence (known as the preamble) of the Constitution of the United States of America:
(Italics mine.)
Hmmmm.... "promote the general welfare..." So it actually is the job of the government to see to the health of its citizens, and has been for over 200 years. I guess that explains why anyone should pay for anyone else's health care; it's their duty as an American citizen, and if they don't like it they should just go live somewhere else!
they have the fools voting against their own/families best interest. the oligarchs don't want change. they like their for-profit model even if it destroys the substance of this country. this is why i would have liked to hear more emphasis on the "economic necessity" of health care cost reform. the ceo of GM wagoner said it was probably health care cost. other ceo(s) have said it's unsustainable. a country with 70% consumerism middleclass will not be able to afford consumerism. this will put more people out of work.
consequently more foreclosures and personal debt. more medical conditions will be allowed to worsen becoming more expensive. those medical bills won't be paid so that COST will be SHIFTED to tax payers.
I'm as liberal as they come and agree that the "be a grownup" line shows Jenkins true colors on the wealth care debate. However, I think it's a stretch to say that she was laughing at the single mother and her child. You can see from the video that the kid is running around and would probably make me laugh as well. Perhaps we can give her the benefit of the doubt on that one. It's what she said that's important to go after.
of compassionate conservatism.
This was Bush's health care plan: give people who don't make enough money to pay taxes a tax credit to buy insurance.
How come hunter gatherers had no problem sharing with each other for the common good? Fast forward thousands of years later and people are embracing the self destructive attitude of "I got mine so screw everyone else". This is de-evolution at it's finest.
The Republican platform is a simple one; take money from individuals/government revenue from taxes and hand it over to corporations either directly or indirectly.
The indirect method - hand money to citizens to spend with private institutions e.g. school vouchers, tax credits, stimulus checks, tax cuts & exemptions for corporations etc.
The direct method - have their friends and family register as providers of a product or service, claim that the government can't provide the service and contract, no-bid of course, with said friends' or family members' companies e.g. pumps for Katrina, educational materials for schools via NCLB, Blackwater, Haliburton etc.
Republican Healthcare reform proposes both methods:
Indirect - give people a check to cover part of their insurance expenses, in the hopes that they will come up with the difference resulting in a windfall to insurance providers.
Direct - A prior example of this is the masterful Medicare Part D legislation, giving pharmaceutical companies federal money to "subsidize" the cost of drugs with no negotiation to reduce costs resulting in a windfall to drug companies.
Republicans are quite predictable.
best not eat at a restaurant unless her tolerance for bodily fluids is high.
Jenkins missed an opportunity here to discuss the problem of healthcare being employer based. Why is this mother working full time and not getting that benefit?
But, I have to say that the headline for this blog is misleading. I didn't feel she was laughing AT this mother and the "be a grown up" comment, however stupid, didn't seem to be directed at her per se. I think she said that to illustrate her belief that people should be responsible for their own health care. Obviously, that is not the reality with our current system and yes, she is only proposing to give government money to the private insurance companies that pad her campaign fund.
Paying out lump sums of money is not only insufficient since medical costs far outstrips the inflation rate, it's inefficient on par with out-care vs in-care, particularly when in-care is in for profit hospitals.
Jenkins is a heartless Republican droid raised on Kansas fear & hate but, her audience member makes a good point for the 'I don't want to pay for your health care' crowd of which I am part. I am as Liberal as they come but, hey I am already taxed to fucking death and pay a few hundred bucks per pay just to insure my self. Shit I am footing the bill for two lost wars. How about that Obama?
I run a newer Mac and tried to download HR 3200. It takes forty five minutes to load and from what I read so far it is a disaster. Not even Obama has read it. Instead he has three books to sleep on that no one cares about except, the press, while on his $40,000 vacation. Very Bushlike wouldn't you say?

Listen no one should be denied health care & the best science can offer nor a decent daily meal and a bed as conservative icon Winston Churchill the father of socialized medicine said so many times. But, let's go after the real problems... over pricing, over testing, no preventative care, fewer GP's, outrageous malpractice insurance costs and insurance company malfeasance not hit us with more government over regulation and taxes.
quite a few more people than yours truly will be petitioning for admittance into Canada.
I'm a hard worker, truly I am. I teach math, rather well.
I don't eat much, either...
Your two statements "I am as Liberal as they come" and "the 'I don't want to pay for your health care' crowd of which I am part" are big clues you are woefully ill-informed about health care reform, and you are not nearly as liberal as you think you are.
Our per capita health care costs now exceed $7,000 and are expected to more than double in the next few years. Health care is costing you a buttload of money already, and you can be sure a measurable part of your tax dollars are spent in the morass many US citizens blithely and incorrectly call 'the best health care system in the world.'
As to your 'I don't want to pay for your health care' stance: would you rather your tax dollars continue to fund illegal invasions, big monopolies' tax loopholes, bank bailouts and a bloated military? I would much rather my tax dollars benefit our poor, our children, our elderly, our infrastructure, OURSELVES... geez, do I sound like a true liberal now?!?
First, I want universal health care. So I would say I am a progressive, altho my life is mostly about me really just trying to survive as an artist...Anyway, While I disagree with the Representative, the clip I watched did not have her laughing at the young single mother, but at the idea of the government subsidizing everyone's health care, also she didn't tell the young lady to go be a grown up, she said her position of the tax break or rebate would let people make their own choices and be like grown ups. Like I said I don't agree with that policy or want it......but the rep actually makes a statement about everybody getting to be heard even tho they disagree...
I see these kind of 'left' reactionary expressions more than i would like to on Crook's and Liar's. It is actually disappointing, but I suppose it is part of the polarizing energy in our culture right now, anyway let's try not to do that while remaining true to our vision of a caring nation.
too. For 12 years I fed myself and paid my rent working as an actor and sometimes as a writer.
I like to think I may have developed an understanding of recognizing the subtle nuances in text and speech.
The wry turn of a phrase, the quick embellishment of a retort - all to give us on the stage a place to find meaning in the words that were spoken and many times, the words that were not.
The Rep. slammed this woman and all others who support single payer health care as immature children who should just grow up and take care of themselves. The remark was veiled in an overarching thread of condescension.
I think if you view the clip again, you would see the subtlety and maybe even admire the manner in which Rep. Jenkins places the figurative knife in this poor woman, twists if for her own pleasure and leaves it there for effect as she draws the discussion back to her agenda.
For the record, I think Rep. Jenkins displays herself as a cruel, evil bitch who cares nothing for those who have not reached her level of economic attainment and would quite frankly like for them to all die off as quickly as possible so she can just get on with her corporate fellatio.
so....How much money is Rep. Lynn Jenkins selling her vote for????
Most Republicans and Dems.only care about the fact cats in the corporations.
I was curious about Representative Jenkins’ statement, “…we have Medicaid in the current system and that’s why under the alternative proposal we have an option for low-to-modest-income people to be able to afford health care and then we’ve got the SCHIP program for children. I think we’ve got all of the bases covered.” I googled the good congressperson and found this:
http://kansasjackass.blogspot.com/2009/01/ks-...
As I suspected, she voted against expanding SCHIP funding. Yeah Representative Jenkins, you sure do got all the bases covered.
...who would rather see thier fellow Americans die, than have a dime of their tax dollars go towards someone elses health care...
Sure, Jesus spent all his time healing the sick and feeding the hungry, but these Christians think their salvation hinges not on good deeds, but on worshipping Jesus as a GOD.
So they reject jesus as a philosopher ..
Jesus's example of healing the sick and helping others means NOTHING to fundamentalist Christians..
Sure, there are some Christians involved with charity, community outreach, and help those in need-as Jesus would do, but those are 'liberal' Christians..
feign agreement, and demand we end Medicare...
Watch them quickly change their tune...
Let's see Jenkins give up her healthcare and laugh about it. Whore.
Any time I hear a woman laughing like that, I can tell what's underneath it. Pure, suppressed RAGE.
And these are the people we allow to make the rules that we in turn must live by?
