Mosque-Erade
John Oliver says Muslims are allowed to put a mosque near Ground Zero, just like Catholics can build a church next to a playground.
Another part showed Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the Iman behind the project, who FOX are now trying to make into some kind of boogeyman. Nevermind that a few months earlier he had appeared on FOX talking about plans for the Islamic cultural center.
Asshats.
The Daily Show have captured this farce better than the so-called legitimate news networks. But that's nothing new, is it?

They're not just "Asshats". They're Cheap Labor Conservative Asshats.
"Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous Communist plot we have ever had to face?" - General Jack D. Ripper
"Muslims are allowed to put a mosque near Ground Zero, just like Catholics can build a church next to a playground."
Catholics went to Aushwitz and wanted to commemorate Catholics who died there, and how Jews were angry in no small part because of the Catholic stance towards the Nazi regime while the Holocaust was happening. Sure, the RCC has the right to commemorate Catholics lost in the Holocaust, but should they be doing it at Auschwitz?
(I read this in either Papal Sins by Catholic writer Garry Willis, or in a book called Constantine's Sword, which someone recommended here.)

the less I liked catholics.
mind you, I've had no use for catholics since I was in third grade, when I figured out that it was a long con they were trying to sell me.
as I grew older, I had less and less good things to say about that cancer of an institution.
the endless sheltering of child rapists really didn't help matters.
the appointment of a nazi to the position of pope didn't help either.
after all this time, I was somewhat taken aback this week to find that my disgust could deepen.
And I don't think anyone finds Catholics more endearing to them after reading about the petulant "cross wars."

a relative was rather... bummed... when I gently informed him about that.
his 'logic' was "but the Jews didn't want the nuns to have a convent near auschwitz, and they moved because it was a sensitive issue! why can't this mosque do that?"
I laid it out:
1. the nuns converted a Zyklon B factory into a convent. They didn't 'plan on it' or 'want to', they DID. And a Zyklon B factory is not quite the same as a Burlington Coat Factory, last I checked.
2. their superiors, along with some Jewish leaders, decided that the convent should be moved, they all agreed and went about building a new place for them.
3. once the new place was ready, the nuns refused to move. it took someone from 'high up' to finally convince them to do what they were told.
4. Poland is not a country founded on the idea of religious tolerance.
5. Poland had pogroms and horrific violence directed at Jews for decades after WWII.
6. Poland continues to have problems with vandalism and arson where synagogues are concerned to this day.
Catholics want to commemorate other Catholics who died at Auschwitz, and they shouldn't do it...at Auschwitz? Where else should they do it, Disneyland? Will the Roma who want to commemorate their people who died there be told they shouldn't do it? What about gay people? What about - seriously - abortion doctors? Should THEY be told they can't hold commemoration at the site where their people died?
You can't tell someone, "we know your people were killed, too, but you don't deserve to remember them the way you want to." No matter how sensitive some people feel about such things, that doesn't give them the right to deny the very comforts they have to others. Majority rules is not the way to decide these things.

put the crosses at all, I posted it because it's sort of a parallel to what's going on now, many Jews dislike the Catholic Church because of Pius XII standing by or helping the Nazis as the Holocaust happened.
Polish-Jews and the Diaspora could argue that the RCC's actions were insensitive, but that doesn't mean that the Catholic dead shouldn't have been commemorated.
(As of 1998, the saint's day that falls on my birthday, which was on the 9th of this month, is for St. Edith Stein, who was a nun of Jewish descent who died at Auschwitz, strange enough).
And I think that if the Jehovah's Witnesses wanted to put something at Auschwitz to remember their dead, that is their right too.

it's important to note that those putting up the 'catholic crosses' were a group of Polish nationalists.
the crosses were to commemorate the Polish Catholic resistance fighters who had been executed by the Nazis at Auschwitz.
okay, makes sense so far...
the erection of the crosses was done to protest Jewish 'demands' that the 26 foot tall souvenir cross from a mass said by the Pope at Birkenau be removed.
this was going on at the same time that Jews were increasingly upset over the fact that there was now a Catholic Church in the SS administration building at Birkenau (where over a million Jews were gassed...)
wait, what?
so, those crosses were a petulant, vulgar pissing match, that went against the very thing that the 152 dead Polish resistance fighters had given their lives for?
sad.
I'm not so sure that those Polish resistance fighters were necessarily fighting for what you think they were fighting for. Polish independence? Sure. Religious freedom....Maybe not. There's a long history of pogroms in Polandb.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
true, it's impossible to know the motives of the dead.
The Poles fought valiantly during the war, and it's because of the Polish intelligence network that the Allies ended up with the German Enigma (3-wheel type) decryption machine, but Polish nationalism and Catholicism really spiked between the warsb.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
Every time there is on of these major distractions about a non-issue, I wonder just what it is they are distracting us from. Cheap Labour Conservatives want to keep us pitted against one another and focused on non-issues.

remark wasn't contradicting the first; he's saying Muslims have freedom of religion, but that doesn't mean it's wise to build a mosque near GZ. It's merely nuance and that doesn't work in American politics.
it's also a stupid comment.
a distraction, a red herring, a dilution, a distortion.
it's not like it's hard to figure out what the right is trying to accomplish with this phony outrage and very real racism.
still haven't heard any of the pants wetting whiners complain about the mosque that already exists several hundred feet away...
It was weaseling, pure and simple. He said something strong, then got convinced by his handlers that strength is dangerous, so he backpedalled and ended up looking weak. Sad.

Oh man, this is *classic* Daily Show. Every now and then the show just gets in to the groove and everything clicks and the skit ends up phenomenally amusing as well as truthful -- which makes it all the more funny.
Nobody does it better than the Daily Show and John Stewart.
cuz I had a mouth full of food and it was going to get messy!

Where did these yahoos get the idea that this place is being built by a "radical extremist"? I mean, WTF? He's about as far from a radical extremist Muslim as you could possibly get! He's a freaking SUFI, for Christ's sake. That's like saying Mr. Rogers is a follower of David Duke because they're both Christian and they're both white!

of course you are right.
Feisal Abdul has spent his life working with groups that seek common ground between the three headed judeo splinters, Jews, Christians, Muslims.
He condemned the 9/11 attacks (and then made the grave mistake of telling the emperor he was naked, and his actions are causing the extremists to become bolder and more of them. never tell the emperor a truth he doesn't cotton to!)
He advocates for equal rights for women.
He's worked with the FBI anti-terror unit.
He traveled doing things at George Bush's request.
well, okay that last item does make him sound a little extreme...
rediculous BULLSHIT from the Republicans.
John Stewart NAILED this issue... too bad neither Harry Reid NOR the president rose to his grasp of the OBVIOUS.

'Nazis dont have the right to put a sign next to the Holocaust Museum'
They don't? Again, its not a very good idea, but if they want to walk around the block where the museum is wearing swastika armbands and holding signs talking about how awesome Naziism was...they actually are allowed to do that.
