Maine Governor signs bill allowing gay marriage
Via NECN:
(NECN/WMTW) - Maine Governor John Baldacci signed a bill this afternoon making the state the fifth in the country to allow gay marriage.
The governor signed the legislation shortly after the Maine legislature passed it.
Four other states currently allow same-sex marriages. Connecticut, Massachusetts and Iowa have been ordered by the courts to do so, and Connecticut has enacted a law codifying a court ruling. Vermont passed a gay marriage law in April over the governor's objection.
"I think Maine people should be proud of the way this has been handled," said Baldacci.
"Under the Constitution, we are all the same," said Baldacci in referencing his personal feelings about this matter. "Times have changed."

Complete statement below the fold.
From the Governor's website:
Governor John E. Baldacci today signed into law LD 1020, An Act to End Discrimination in Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom.
“I have followed closely the debate on this issue. I have listened to both sides, as they have presented their arguments during the public hearing and on the floor of the Maine Senate and the House of Representatives. I have read many of the notes and letters sent to my office, and I have weighed my decision carefully,” Governor Baldacci said. “I did not come to this decision lightly or in haste.”
“I appreciate the tone brought to this debate by both sides of the issue,” Governor Baldacci said. “This is an emotional issue that touches deeply many of our most important ideals and traditions. There are good, earnest and honest people on both sides of the question.”
“In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions,” Governor Baldacci said. “I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage.”
“Article I in the Maine Constitution states that ‘no person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law, nor be denied the equal protection of the laws, nor be denied the enjoyment of that person’s civil rights or be discriminated against.’”
“This new law does not force any religion to recognize a marriage that falls outside of its beliefs. It does not require the church to perform any ceremony with which it disagrees. Instead, it reaffirms the separation of Church and State,” Governor Baldacci said.
“It guarantees that Maine citizens will be treated equally under Maine’s civil marriage laws, and that is the responsibility of government.”
“Even as I sign this important legislation into law, I recognize that this may not be the final word,” Governor Baldacci said. “Just as the Maine Constitution demands that all people are treated equally under the law, it also guarantees that the ultimate political power in the State belongs to the people.”
“While the good and just people of Maine may determine this issue, my responsibility is to uphold the Constitution and do, as best as possible, what is right. I believe that signing this legislation is the right thing to do,” Governor Baldacci said.

Thanks you John Baldacci!
Good for Maine - I hope my State of Minnesota gets moving on this soon, but I doubt it. TPaw won't even let us have a second senator, so I won't hold my breath...Yeah Maine!
other states are making the right moral and economic choice
it just makes sense
if civil marriage is a contract, all people should be allowed to engage in that contract
the right has lost...its all over
your right, I have been to harsh on this subject. Let gays marry, lets allow mass abortion killing in every state all the time, day or night. Let's open the borders with Mexico to allow anyone over, that way we don't ever have to worry about illegals taking American jobs. Legalize every drug that the left would like to use. Let us also make every state just like California, so people get IOU's in the mail.
This way, eventually, we will have less Liberals in the years to come. Sounds like a great plan. I have no idea why the right even fights people who wish to reduce their population or their intelligence, by all means go right ahead and proceed
You are our first troll in this thread. While it took you long enough to get here, you still win your obviously needed prize of extra large extra absorbent special diapers!
Use them in peace, and oh yes, might want to stick a pair in your mouth too.

why people like you even exist on this planet. If you honestly think gays being married somehow threatens your marriage, or your ability to marry, you need to find a good psychotherapist and get rid of the demons in your soul.
But then, empathy is a trait sadly lacking in those of your ilk.

are not happy unless they are making others miserable. That way they have company. And someone to change them.
Not "less liberals." It should be "fewer liberals."
Whackjob.

this fool has never met a gay person in its life. Doesn't seem to realize there's unfortunately a large amount of gay Republicans, most in the closet though. It's obviously a self-hater.
and positively wretched spelling tell me everything I need to know, but I'm going to guess that he just got out of bed with his cousin/wife/mule and is still groggy. I'm sure he's the kind that just hates educashun and it shows. He's probably in the process of high-fiving his fellow morons as they sit around contemplating on whether they can pool their food stamps to buy Cheetos and beer.
Why not all 3 in one?
didn't write that correctly, I meant cousin/wife or mule, but you're right, they really all could be one, couldn't they??
no idea that proper grammar is always a necessity. I was unaware that a grade would be handed out at the end of the week. Excuse my ignorance professor.
I swear, most, if not all of you, complain to no end and have written some really distasteful sentiments towards your fellow human being on here, but don't let that stop you. Many have shown very un-educated points of view, but still, don't let that stop you from being rude to someone that disagrees with you. If someone disagrees with your point of view they are considered un-educated, bigots, self-haters, needing diapers, and the list goes on.
Try to bring your head out of the clouds a little and become less pompous and snobbish. Try to understand for a second(even though it may be brief) that just because you or anyone else hold a point of view, it does not make it automatically the correct point of view. Try to imagine just for a second, that your point of view, may in fact be incorrect in someones mind. Why does this automatically put them in a category of being someone you despise? Intellectual...hmmm...
for proving my point :)
...how does gay marriage factor into the other things you listed above? Also, I'd like, for once, to her a cogent, reasoned argument against gay marriage. "The Bible says it's wrong" does not qualify as such an argument, btw. I'm sure I don't need to explain why. Here's your chance.
Whackjob was the intended message... but I thought I might lern ya sumthin' whiles I was at it.
(I'm an English teacher.)
PS I didn't read your last post, just the first sentence, as is my right.

is how some people have to resort to trolling for the GOP in order to make ends meet.
It must be such a burden to prostitute yourself in this fashion, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Right?
John, what is your concern about gay marriage, and how is it at all related to abortion policy, immigration policy, or drug policy?
I ask because I fail to see how a state creating an avenue for two adults to share the legal benefits of a familial relationship in any way impacts anyone not choosing to enter that contract.
I understand and see the point of view. The point I try to make is simple when asked with a question. This country is founded on what religious principles?
After all, I am sure no one will disagree that indeed this country was founded on religious principles. Now with that in mind and thinking on the most simplest of levels, men and women go together, why? Creation? That may very well be a really simple answer but can also be absolutely true. Now really though, think about it. Has a man and a man or a woman and a woman ever created a child without the help or assistance of the opposite sex? The answer is no. So how can it be morally correct to accept it?
Or a better question is this, why should I be considered a bigot just because ,morally, something goes against my beliefs? The only solution for me to not accept your ideology and for you not to accept mine would be to live in different countries where everyone would think like thoughts.
So getting back to the question, I do not believe in gay marriage because I believe it is morally and ethically wrong. It goes against my beliefs and who I am. I also should not be considered a bigot or un-educated because I have different values.
You are a bigot and uneducated because you are a bigot and uneducated, which means you make bigoted statements and hold uneducated positions on complex subjects. It can't be made easier than that, son.
Let's start from the beginning. The first permanent English colony in North America was founded at Jamestown, for economic purposes. Carolina- economic purposes. Georgia- a penal colony. New York, Delaware(by Sweden), New Jersey- economic. The Plymouth colony was chartered so that England could get non-Church of England subjects, religious dissenters, as far away as possible while still profiting from the labor of those subjects. Ditto Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
The odd duck was Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, founded on the principle of total religious freedom.
But these were all colonies- the predecessors of, but not actually THIS COUNTRY. This country was a revolution based on no religious values, but the values of the enlightenment. The Founding Fathers fought for representation in their own governance, after having begged the mother country for such rights and being denied them. The battle cry was not "For our God and land," but, "No taxation without representation!" The constitution these men wrote did not establish a church, and the very first amendment to that constitution still reads:
Note that before the mentions of the freedom of speech, press, assembly and petition, the writers of the amendment forbid the establishment of religion by the government. And it was made clear by the 14th Amendment that each and every amendment to that constitution is applicable to the governments of the individual states as well as the federal government.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
God we trust, One nation under God, shall I continue? Like it or not, religion is in the government.
While most of the founding fathers had some sort of religious belief, few were conventionally religious. Most of them were be classified as deists; they believed in some sort of higher power, but didn't follow any one particular belief system. They did NOT found this country on religious principles, but rather on moral ones - religion is not necessary in order to be moral, after all.
You may believe that gay marriage is morally and ethically wrong. However, many people do NOT see gay marriage as a moral wrong (and that includes many religious people, I might add). Why should your moral beliefs be more important legally than mine? Absent some compelling harm to the society as a whole, there is no reason that the government should not recognize gay marriage.
"Why should your moral beliefs be more important legally than mine?"
Back at ya... ^^^ just because my beliefs are different does not make them wrong or me a bigot.
Don't forget about kicking puppies.
LUUUUUUVS kickin' us some puppies.
good for them. now they can live their lives as they want/see fit.
Massachusetts native here- i am so damn proud to be a New Englander- we now have THREE New england states that practice marriage equality. When will the rest of America follow our example??
I take the 'massachusetts liberal' slander spoken by right wingers as a compliment.
As a Canadian, I can say, "I love New England." Very nice, indeed: been all over it, more than once. It's some of the other states I worry about.
far left loon >.<
New Hampshire has traditionally been the most conservative of the New England states- here is hoping they will see the light and make marriage equality for all a reality.
... at least that is what my Maine friends told me.
I have visited both places a few times, beautiful country... esp. in Autumn.
Boring as shit though... that is why I assume the conservative slant. I can usually tell the politics of a place by its nightlife, or lack there of... New Hampshire and Maine were a close tie in regards to the suckiness of the nightlife. So it was hard to tell.
;-)
Meanwhile we've got to fight and kill the bigots cause.
Hurray! Another state 'reaches enlightenment'. It always makes me hopeful for the rest of the country!

I wish to hell I could imagine Florida being added to that list, but alas we are the charges of the republicans and a whole lot of old republicans too.
A toast to Maine! Everyone there should be super proud of their state.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
Same with Texas, especially as there is a rather HUGE gay population here. But we are still in the tight grip of evil closet cases.
that are gay. The straight ones screw my place up everytime. I have houses in Pinellas County and would easly rent to anyone married named Mike and Mike or Jody and Judy.
gays in the neighborhood always make sure that their places are cute and tidy. Love them as neighbors.
When my partner and I lived in South Carolina, our landlord was asked why he would rent to f#gs. His reply was we were the best tenants he ever rented too. Never late with the rent and he really appreciated the improvements that I made.
Being an amateur interior designer that is told all the time I should be a professional, I did new wallpaper, tile and carpeting, On my own dime of course. I didn't mind I have always felt like my home is in essence an extension of who I am.
He even bought a small house closer to where my partner worked and we were going to rent to own it. But something strange happened. The week the people that lived there were supposed to move out, it burned to the ground. Dunno how that would've happened.. Yeah right.
Now we live in an apartment in West Hollywood, CA. Not allot you can do in this building, but it is nicely decorated. Just no color on the walls. And we just had our 9 year anniversary on Apr 30th.
by any stretch but these types of couples most definitely contribute higher quality to a neighborhood then hillbilly's and red necks.
I really don't see what the problem is other then the ignorant don't like it.
One of my father's clients (he's a lawyer) complained to him about some gays that moved in on his street. My dad asked him what the problem was.
How does their house look? Nice. They painted it.
And their garden? It's the nicest one on the street.
Are they making noise? No. Quiet, polite and friendly, good neighbours.
And you're complaining, why.... ? The guy decided they weren't so bad. In fact, the neighbourhood, overall, has improved following their lead.
far left loon >.<
when the property values skyrocket.
My dad is VERY (fiscal) conservative, pro-USA-GOP (but not GOP these days), Israel, etc., but I gotta say he's hip on social issues (gay marriage, abortion, marijuana, etc.): very liberal.
far left loon >.<
Way to go Maine! Only (45) States to go!
"hillbilly's and red necks"... I am a Hillbilly actually, a Hoopie and damn proud of it. Although, I no longer hunt, fish, trap and drink alcohol I can do it with the best of them and will have no problem surviving in the wild when the country really goes to hell. Not many can say that. I am highly educated and have a great career. I enjoy skiing, golf, reading, playing music, collecting jewelry/art and cooking (yes... deer, squirrel, raccoon, rabbit not, so much for possum are all on the menu). So your innuendo that all those who oppose gay marriage or bring down the housing value in your neighborhood are hillbilly or redneck is absurd. If you are gay (I am not) I can take you to a few gay bars in West Virginia that will open your eyes as to how real hill people live. We do have cable and the internets you know?
BTW... It's THAN not THEN...

His recent support of same sex marriage is not only false and hollow, it's damned hypocritical.

POP, you owe me another keyboard for being so clever.
I know exactly what you're saying. No picket fences for me!!
The Cleavers I am (we are) not, nor will I (we) ever be. Perish the thought. I'm just way too independent: no one is putting me in a cage.
far left loon >.<
Do you see marriage as a "cage"? I have never felt anything like that. To me it's living and sharing everything in your life with the your loving, caring, understanding best friend. Plus there's a whole lot of fun and laughing involved. Living a life like that to me is a gift, not a cage.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
Can be the best thing ever. But I realize you gotta work at it and want it more than anything. Most americans, including gays, just don't. But there are very good and lasting relationships out there and I envy them.
In reference to "following the manual". Each person makes their own kind of marriage. My first was too jealous and wanted me to agree with him on everything. He wanted to be the leader. I left (after 10 years) cuz I couldn't do that lifelong, even though he was a really good guy, I felt stiffled.
POP if you've met the right one-- fabulous. Enjoy. Great.
I think a lot of people marry and fall into a rut. They get boring, stop exploring, curtail sex, become clones. Not all, but many. You have to work at understanding, and allowing freedoms.
PS My folks are nearing their 60th, and were high school sweethearts. Still are.
far left loon >.<
I've been married 20+ years, to the same man, and it's been wonderful, not miserable at all. I still thoroughly enjoy his company and we have a great time together.
That's just scary Evet. Still why deny anyone that right?
far left loon >.<
are fear and guilt ridden dogmatists to deny marriage to a couple who wants to build a life and have some stability and prospects for moving forward.
Was that these people screamed that gays were all promiscuous and unstable and will destroy the fabric of society. And now that a large portion of gays want to have children and form family units, we're all evil child molesters out to destroy the fabric of society.
That's what makes them so special.
That's what all the hysteria's been about and still is apparently.
The republicans sell fear, they are out of ideas.
of something?
I don't think the GOP has had any collective idea since the times and tribulations of Teddy Roosevelt.
But they do have an idea, to keep us in the dark ages.
what they call "idea" the rest of us refers to as "nightmare" ;-)
They hate you because your are promiscuous. And they hate you because you are monogamous. The constant in the two examples is that they just hate you... for you. Whatever excuse they use is temporary, and usually pulled out of their asses to comply with the current outrage d'jour.
I always thought that homophobia told us more about the homophobes than the homosexuals themselves. I swear some of the homophobes I have met in life new more about gay sex than my gayest (is there such a thing?) friends.
to be honest.....since I've been there.....the more homophobic you are, the more you're gonna be the biggest drag queen when you come out. As for the female ones, generally they just become comediennes and talk show hosts.
get ridiculed just for enjoying sex instead of approaching it as a cold efficient act of submission and domination.
... until you try it. ;-)
Or is that S&M?

My wife and I just celebrated out 18th anniversary, and we've been poly for ten of those years. We have clear rules about our extended relationships, and our marriage is stronger than many of our monogamous peers.

/kidding.
Would be a hilarious show...
I am so very happy in my marriage and have been for almost 23 years. How could I ever stand in the way of anyone having that kind of happiness. I just never would.
Also I would in a heart beat trade my neighbors for gay couples. My neighbors are all older and often grumpy. Of course they are all from up north and they believe the state should change to be just like it was "up north". These folks are never going to allow gay marriage in their lifetime. Ain't gonna happen.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
And then we met..... ;-)
You sound like me. I've been married 20 years and have enjoyed every minute of it. We were out to dinner one night and the waitress asked if we were on a date because we were laughing and talking and we told her that we'd been married for quite a while. She went on to tell us that she got lots of married couples and they would come in and sit and stare at the walls and not converse. Life's too short to be miserable. I wish I had some gay neighbors too. My gay friends always take really good care of their homes and yards.
Poly-Poonts will be outraged!
Heheh.
As will joe the plumber who says he has gay friends but they know not to get anywhere near his kids. He also says the word "queer" is in the dictionary so it can't be a slur.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
Everyone has 'gay friends'. That just means he's tolerant enough not to call them fags to their faces (or punch them). He'll be in the same room, and breath the same air, but...
far left loon >.<
Has a big vocabulary and a little Dic-tionary.
Good one!
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
If Joe the plumber had any gay friends, I am sure some of these gay friends would have given him some tips and hints regarding what to wear at an award show. Anyone who shows up to a black tie event wearing jeans and open flannel shirt, with his hands firmly in his pocket, does not have any gay friends...
Either that, or the word "friend" does not mean what Joe thinks it means.
In any case, "Joe the plumber" always struck me as a nom de plume of some gay porn actor. Tchika Tchika Wang Wang...
Do not put that man in my club......he's all breeder and can stay that way.

... since us straights don't want him in our team either.
Maybe we can convince the eunuchs to take him?

Good for Maine!
I am a bit surprised, since my acquittances from Maine are extremely conservative to say the least.

I certainly hope he is happy for her.
Just proves we are EVERYWHERE.
I'm sorry, I'm stuck in Kansas....I briefly had to channel Fred Phelps....
I'm betting that Stephen King is very happy for her. He's always struck me as a very common sense, down-to-earth kinda guy. Well, except for the vampires and demons and such. And those are just fun.

More good news. What a nice note to head off to work on!!!!
Time to get on my capri pants and battle the Seoul traffic nightmare. (I take the bus; listen to music and read. No stress.)
far left loon >.<
I wish I could be happy about this. But I am not.
Hear me out, if New England continues this tide, they will force all their upright pious conservative citizens to migrate elsewhere. And that sometimes means more assholes coming to our warm and beautiful California. Especially, after prop. 8, these assholes are under the impression that the waters are safe for their homophobic derrieres and their precious kids.
And that is the last thing we need over here, a mass migration of reactionary puritans.
Although maybe they decide to move to Oklahoma or Utah. But I just don't want to risk it they looking at a map and decide, hey kids... let's go west!
The whole stinking Bush line came from New England.
Plus they are seceding soon, so good riddance to the whole lot.
I just don't want them to screw my beloved Cali even further. My folks tell me that ever since Raygun got done with this state, it hasn't been the same...
I'll try not to be rude. There are a LOT of gay people and a LOT of good people here. Just like California has a lot of bigots too....I mean who passed Prop 8? I don't judge all of CA for that, so don't judge TX for the actions of a lot of a-holes with power. I lived in CA for six years and got forced back to TX because of the economy, and miss it terribly. I felt a lot happier in SF than here in Houston.
I have plenty of great friends in Texas, and I am not willing to surrender Austin to the assholes :-)
That being said, I never heard the governor of California openly talk about secession... or even the topic be open for discussion sans it being a kiss of death for any political career in California.
In that sense I believe it is up to the good people in Texas to do a better job, I understand that the sheer volume of assholes makes that a daunting task. But please understand that until parts of the country get their act together the door for jokes will remain open.
If we can't laugh... what is the point?
on the east coast trying to stay away from hillbilly's and rednecks. Your point? ;)
to be given any incentives to migrate west ;-)
Maybe I am being too selfish, or my key of humor didn't come through...

The biggest threat to marriage is DIVORCE. Why don't we make divorce illegal?? A marriage license is a municipal license. If you really believe in God than some silly license issued by mere mortals shouldn't be such a threat. Why put so much energy into preventing people from being happy? If the Jesus people are so right than we'll all get ours on judgement day. So until then they should mind their own business.. I'm just happy that so many of my fellow Americans are happy today.
I say this idea should be pushed any time one of these xian groups tries to protect marriage. The latest statistics show that nearly 1 out of every 1 divorces results in a broken marriage.
There's no way these xian (faux christians) could possibly argue against such an inclusion... they may just let it die instead.
As per their lord and savior:
Matthew 5:
Adultery
27: "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'
28: "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
29: "If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
30: "And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
Divorce
31: "It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.'
32: "But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery."
Here's a proposal for the xians:
You may get a civil divorce which deals with all property, mammon, etc. But you are never allowed to divorce in the eyes of the church... Oh wait, that'll never fly... christ said it. xians never read anything except the old testament.
You know:
RS: We are talkin Old testement, I mean REAL wrath of God stuff!
ES: 40 years of torment, earthquakes, tidal waves!
WZ: The Dead Rising from the grave!!
PV: World Destruction, Human Sacrifices, Dogs and Cats living together... Mass Hysteria!!!

I'm curious - does anyone know if the new Maine law also recognizes same-sex marriages performed in other states?
DOMA, of course, left a loophole - states are required under federal law to recognize the legality of marriages performed in other states, except of course for same-sex marriages.
We've now got several states recognizing gay marriage, but are they recognizing out-of-state marriages? Is a marriage performed in Massachusetts recognized in Maine now? Because that is going to be a big issue at some point - I can't imagine how much it would suck to know that your marriage might or might not be legal if you leave your home.
