A Republican vying to replace Mark Sanford as the next governor of South Carolina let one slip a couple of days ago, further embarrassing his state.

GREENVILLE, SC (WIS) — Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer is defending his comment which compared government assistance programs to "feeding stray animals."

Bauer made the comparison during a town hall meeting Friday in Fountain Inn. He was saying poor parents of students who eat free or reduced-price meals in school cafeterias should be required to attend parent-teacher conferences, or the students should go without.

"My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed," Bauer said, according to the Greenville News. "You're facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don't think too much further than that. And so what you've got to do is you've got to curtail that type of behavior. They don't know any better."

He's living in an ancient world of welfare queens. South Carolina's law already requires recipients to "do something for it". And the benefits have a lifetime limit. He's just another ignorant cracker dogwhistling to his choir.

Ladyrain's picture

Absolutely right, Karyn. These whack-job right-wingers are vehemently pro-life, except when it's going to cost them some $$. Then it's all about starving them into oblivion. Believe me, I don't appreciate my tax dollars going to waste in government handouts, but I just as strongly believe in the Pro-Choice movement, because if abortion is illegal and more and more and more unwanted babies are born, just WHO is going to be paying for them? Food, housing, schooling, medical care---it's all coming out of our taxes.

I thought it was Jesus that said that?

Anyhoo. This guys version, "Don't give a man a fish, you teach him to fish for life."

Wait a second. That one sounds profound as well. It also sounds more Chinese.

Their formula is to neither give them fish nor teach them how to fish. Their formula is to leave them starving and ignorant. And to feel good about it. Righteous even, while robbing people of hope, of a future, of the American dream. Because the poor, whom they would starve, are in their eyes no better than vermin.

Looks as if it runs in the family. Granny would be proud.

41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed , into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 For I was an hungred , and ye gave me no meat : I was thirsty , and ye gave me no drink : 43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in : naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44 Then shall they also answer him, saying , Lord, when saw we thee an hungred , or athirst , or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45 Then shall he answer them, saying , Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

The concept of getting lower-income parents involved in PTAs isn't a bad idea. If you gave the poor that sort of voice, imagine what sort of reforms they'd be able to enact.

And then imagine what other reforms lower-income families could accomplish when they realized what they were capable of. Some of them might (horror!) try to run for public office.

Oh, and before someone complains that working people might not be able to make it, I have a simple solution: Paid time off, just like jury duty.

yet another republican connection to punishing children because they were born in the wrong ZIP code.

Nice.

A kid is born to poverty or at least poor parents. So, along with attending a severely underfunded and unequal school system, that kid should now go hungry because of the parents' inability to or lack of desire to become involved with the PTA?

He really needs to read Jonathon Kozol.

WE as a country just don't get it. Rather than continuing to ostracize and marginalize those who are born and/or living in poor circumstances, we need to put a generational plan in place to change the trajectory of those who finds themselves in that situation.

But, no. Sadly, we have elected leaders who believe it is permissable and right to starve children because they are poor.

Well...at least they're getting closer to telling the truth...they really want "those people" to die off and finally just get out of their world.

Raising them healthy in those zip codes will produce more people we are able to charg higher rates for insurance.

He, and most whites in SC, will see that as code for only poor Blacks (or hispanics). They are not likely to vote for him anyway. So he scores cheap points with "the south will rise again" crowd with no real loss of votes on those that wouldn't touch him anyway.

Of course, there are poor whites in SC. They will assume though that he wasn't talking about them.

With the massive ultra-conservative Christian movement in the upstate (of SC), he is going to pander to them whether he believes it or not. Though, in the case of this one, I think he is in the "south will rise again" crowd himself.

When I drive up I-95 from FL to Cape Hatteras (a little fishing and surfing), I pass through South Carolina.

If FL is approx. a (8) on the economic scale, South Carolina is a bottom (2). I give it a little bit of prosperity, due to the coastal Islands and Charleston which are lovely. However, moving inland, SC becomes the armpit of I-95 South. Those Republican Pols are not doing anything for SC, except lining their own pockets. The White population is coasting on the illusion of the Old South where every Share Cropper is his own Plantation. And if you don't have anything to look forward to, a South Carolinian might resort to Fundamental Christianity or NASCAR stereotyping. White South Carolina can blame the Poor Blacks for making them Poor, or those Liberal Yankees for putting them in their blight.

I can see their eyes open wide in Wonderment, like children on Christmas morn, when the typical SC crosses the boarder into FL. They will be amazed at what 60-years of Social Security checks have built. They may even bump into one of their local SC pols spending their tax dollars at Disney World or maybe, flaunting their SC power sipping on a Pina Colada in Key West.

This was precisely the sort of reasoning that caused forced sterilization to take place in America...a practice which was imported by Nazis in their country later on.

Of course, the issue of who gets to decide who's 'substandard' is another matter. But it's obvious who wants to to get to decide...

It is the same idea that the Nazi had for the Jews. Why call Nemo an idiot, the U.S. did let the Hitler grow in strengths, hoping to play him off the communist Russians.

Aporia's picture

You may want to Google "compulsory sterilization"; seems the US the first country to concertedly undertake compulsory sterilization programs for the purpose of eugenics, and when the issue of compulsory sterilization was brought up at the Nuremberg trials after the war many Nazis defended their actions on the matter by indicating that it was the United States itself from whom they had taken inspiration.

Antonious Bolonious's picture

which is amply documented here:

http://www.waragainsttheweak.com/

The sad fact is that forced sterilization did indeed get its' start here in the US, and was copied by the Nazis. And it was based on the eugenics 'craze' of the early 20th century, whose basic tenets were recently espoused by Lt. Governor Bauer.

This is what some of our elected leaders think of their constituents. Something to keep in mind. As I said, the mask slipped, and the snarl it usually hides became visible for all to see.

nemo wrote that the Nazis imported forced sterilization from the U.S. and Dhalgren disagrees. Dhalgren, the U.S. had forced sterilization laws all during the 20th century and up to as late as the 1980s.

According to Wiki, 65,000 individuals were sterilized in 33 states under state compulsory sterilization programs in the United States.

So while Germany may not have gotten the idea from us, we certainly provided a good example to follow. Some were sterilized for hereditary reasons, some for mental and some as punishment (in prison).

I'd like to know what in the world "tea bagger" has to do with this...?????? Wha??

Yes, the guy's an idiot. I don't know why the Haves of this country want the Have-Nots to Have Not. I'd rather not see people begging, starving, homeless, distressed, I'd rather see opps for them. Some need help, some are lazy do-nothings. I used to have nothing but sympathy for the poor/needy but now, well, many are there for a reason and the system just compounds things when welfare becomes generational.

If I study and try hard in school/work and somebody else wants to sit in the back of the class and shoot spitballs why should I have to support that person later? In a certain regard, let them make it on their own. In another regard, share enough as a society just to keep them out of the way so the contributors can contribute something.

To be an absurdist, which I am more and more becoming, I'd offer this:

Since we're now determining who can not marry, why don't we list them all at once?
A man and woman who both smoke can not marry.
A man and woman who are both obese or too thin can not marry.
A man and woman who are both below the poverty line can not marry
(Can you believe the poverty line is at like 23K for a family of four!!! Show me one politician who could live solo on 23K!!!)
If your marriage does not produce a child within in 5 years it is annulled unless you renew your vows.
If your marriage does produce a child, you may not get divorced.

Then there's the question of who should be able to have a kid in the first place. Only married people?

I just wish people wanted the children they have. It's truly sad to be born on the bench and think you're a loser.

I hope this made some sort of sense.

Be well or be better.

ugh

Shadowgm's picture

... what is it about the system or society at large that makes welfare generational?

You note that the poverty level is $23K for a family of four.

If your state pays a minimum wage of $10/hour, you'd make $400/week and gross $20800/year. So the minimum wage is not something you can actually live on and expect to get anywhere.

ricky's picture

where else would you possibly want to go?

"Folks, this is not your father's Republican Party."
Joe Biden

ghostrider's picture

Anywhere but there.

madworld's picture

It becomes generational when, once in the system, you can't make enough to get out of the system. A poor person gets housing assistance, then they get a job-we'll say it's part time, so the assistance is cut to account for the new income but the person is still working with the same amount of dollars that just keeps them week to week without any chance for savings. Then, the child (I believe there has to be a child involved to get true housing assistance/section 8) learns the ways of bouncing from clinic to social worker to find out where other 'hand-outs' are to be accessed. Part of this is, why get a job if I can get the same amount of money by not having one? and this is the environment that the child is brought up in...and part of that can sometimes be, "If I have a child, then I can collect and not go to work too."

Most people stay within the income bracket they were born in. The rich stay rich, the poor stay poor.

Regarding 23K, that's basically exactly what I'm saying. The NYTImes cited 23K as the gov't number for the poverty level but how can you live on that? Some do, some do with less, but the ones in control apparently just want to keep you there or lower.

If congress set the minimum wage and had to live on it as well, there might be a little more shared prosperity.

Regarding welfare, what I really don't get, with some, is that bouncing from office to office seems to be as hard if not harder than just going to work.

Of course, there may not be jobs available anymore but I hope you understand what I'm getting after. I'm not without sympathy or empathy. I'll be the first person to help when I can.

Returning to my absurdity:
The Bank Bailout, HealthCare Reform, Haiti:

Why aren't the Teabaggers or Republicans protesting all the help that's going to Haiti? Isn't that socialism? Taking all that money and goods and sharing it among the people?

My opinion is that the Banks and The HCare Reformers (or Anti-Reformers I should say) seem to have a lot of money and a need for power. I'm not sure how much more they need or why BUT Haiti can happen anywhere at anytime (floods, earthquakes, tornadoes...) why does Helping Out only count when it's a catastrophic disaster when the daily drip drip drip of poverty is as catastrophic probably.

ugh

BlueSam's picture

You also need to read Jonathon Kozol. Generational welfare is the result of leaving poor children in the rotting carcasses of substandard schools.

It is a national disgrace and the reason you speak of is of OUR making as a society. You included.

madworld's picture

I thought I was getting a bit longwinded and also, I'd hope that people know that as well, poor people get poor schools-I was going to mention how most people are poor in Cuba but I understand that most if not all can read and such. I'm not sure that's an apples to apples comparison.

I agree that I'm part of this society and I vote and that our treatment of the welfare class is unconstructive and therefore, not a benefit to us as a whole...However, I don't know how responsible I am in regards to things governmental since there's sooo much money behind whoever gets into office that you can't tell who they're beholden to regardless of their speeches.

After Joe Wilson, Jim Deminted and Mark Sanford, no one should be surprised. The state's full of front running hypocrites, racists and degenerates. Save the two districts with Democrats for reps, that is one state that deserves what it gets from it's elected officials.

...they would admit it, but this is basically the result of any major downswing in the conservative dream, a 100% capitalist free market; the death (preferably by starvation) of approximately 10% of the poorest population, the thought being that the productive will survive, while the unproductive perish. In their minds, this also solves the majority of the unemployment and crime problems at the same time.

John F A's picture

You are correct, because in a Repugs mind, only the poor commmit crimes. (or at least they are the only ones that are ever prosecuted.)

I’ve heard a number of times a judge say when sentencing a middle class business for some kind of money crime, “This man as already paid for his crimes with his tarnished reputation and embarrassment in the community” .

See, the awesomest part of this is every time you wipe out the lowest 10%, you've got a new 10% to blame for your problems and then starve them to "prosperity". A gift that keeps on giving.

that we let the poor and their reduced-priced-school-lunch-eating children simply shrivel up in the streets.

I'd like them to see the results of their moronic no-welfare small government pay people as little as you can get away with utopia and then have them tell me that it is good. OR see if they develop some kind of conscience and admit they should have STFU.

...'the rest of the story' of which Graham, that Senator from South Carolina, was alluding to when he complained that expanding health-care in 'his' state would cost so much because of poverty, AND, the high percentage of 'blacks' (aka colored people)...and they breed so just think of how much that costs.

South Carolina...that wonderful place that not only has given us Graham, but Demint, and Wilson, and Sanford, and The Civil War, and, who can forget, Strom - you know the one that that Mississippi Senator claimed would have solved all our problems with them, er, 'people of color'.

I'm sure that Bauer is a supporter of 'abstinence only' education, which has been proven ineffective. I'm also certain that he opposes taxpayer-funded abortions.

So he and his ilk set up a situation where the poor in his state are deliberately kept ignorant of how to effectively limit the number of children they have, and prevented from aborting pregnancies that they cannot afford to bring to term.

In terms of taxpayer dollars:
Cheapest - prevent any unwanted / unaffordable pregnancies in the first place, with effective, affordable, readily available birth control.
Cheaper - making abortion available to women who cannot afford to have and raise their children.
Most expensive - forcing poor women to bear children they cannot afford, and burdening the taxpayer for the lifetime of those children - food, housing, medical care as children, and then, when they are adults, the (possible) crime and prison cycle.

regardless of his, "solution."

People in poverty do have children. I don't know that anything can be done without sounding like a fasshole but what about that? I'm pro-prevention and believe children should be wanted. If you are living in poverty, don't have a kid, even if you want a kid. I know the difference 'tween logic and emotion and reality, so, people are going to have kids. There are other 'unqualified' categories out there as well.

So what can be done and how can we do it? Education goes so far but what really works, I believe, is to have Mentors. I'm assuming the goal is to have people be self-sustaining by the age of 18.

Who's steppin' up? I'd like to in mind but, I'm busy too.

I just didn't listen.

BTW folks, please don't validate the fallicy of "race" by calling the idiot Bauer a "racist."

He is a bigot.

It's interesting how people who claim to be "pro-life" and act like they care about kids so much basically promote eugenics and social Darwinism...

This guy's departures from logic are off the chart. And, despite his being a practicing Methodist, his departures from what Jesus preached are equally as far off. How far is it from this to eugenics and ethnic cleansing?

Hey dummy! I was born a poor person. My family has had to live on public aid/ food stamps, and has received free meals from churches and such before. But you know what? I just graduated from 4 years of university, and going back to get an additional degree, so that I can better help those people who had to grow up like me or those who were worse off. Not all poor people choose to be poor, and not all stay poor. As a country we should be ashamed at the levels of poverty we face here. That shame should propel us to do things to help alleviate the suffering or eventually eradicate most of the poverty. Things such as feeding the poor. If we can help those people rise from their positions, one day they will be able to help their communities back. This is what has happened for me and my family, and I know it will happen for others.
