Al Qaeda Chimes In With a Slur

Stylistically, this is advanced but whether or not they've miscalculated how the American public will react remains to be seen. Malcolm X's words remain potent, of course, but in my view the over-riding reality of a black man and his family in the White House trumps all else. My feeling is that al-Qaida have badly misfired here and this will only cause Americans to rally around the new president in ways they may have otherwise not.

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) — Al-Qaida's No. 2 leader used a racial epithet to insult Barack Obama in a message posted Wednesday, using a demeaning racial term implying that the president-elect is a black American who does the bidding of whites.
The message appeared chiefly aimed at persuading Muslims and Arabs that Obama does not represent a change in U.S. policies. Ayman al-Zawahri said in the message, which appeared on militant Web sites, that Obama is "the direct opposite of honorable black Americans" like Malcolm X, the 1960s African-American rights leader.
In al-Qaida's first response to Obama's victory, al-Zawahri also called the president-elect — along with secretaries of state Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice — "house negroes."
Speaking in Arabic, al-Zawahri uses the term "abeed al-beit," which literally translates as "house slaves." But al-Qaida supplied English subtitles of his speech that included the translation as "house negroes."
The message also includes old footage of speeches by Malcolm X in which he explains the term, saying black slaves who worked in their white masters' house were more servile than those who worked in the fields. Malcolm X used the term to criticize black leaders he accused of not standing up to whites.

Al Qaeda NEEDS the US to keep up the war effort. Before the election, this group gave de facto support to McSame because he would keep up the war effort, thus bolstering Al Qaeda recruiting, etc.
Now, I believe they fear that Obama will really take steps to end the war efforts and have resorted to taunting and insults (a la GW Bush) to incite an Obama Admin to stay engaged in the war. Nothing would take the wind out of their sails like the US ending the wars and treating the Middle East with respect.

While al Qaeda's goal is evidently to cut into the growning popularity of Obama in the Arab World, there are SO many Black Muslims, that I'm sure they're not going to appreciate Zawahri referring to "House Negros".

The purpose of this story is to further reinforce policy statements that Afghanistan has always been the real threat to American security, even though most Afghans want nothing to do with Al-Qaeda or those primitive Taliban. You know that. I know that.
But, the media's reaction to the story is not surprising either. Talk of the American power structure was completely ignored by the MSM. They won't even bother explaining what the term means.
All they care about is focusing on one or two soundbites that sell, e.g. "House Negro".
What about the point about how Bush has used young men and women for his own gain? 18 and 20 year olds being sent to fight a war where the only beneficiaries are Bush, Cheney and the staff at the Al-Qaeda recruiting office.
Al Zawaheri brings up quite a few historical events during his 'speech'. From a political perspective he raises some important questions, especially regarding the so-called power structure and America's foreign policy in the region. Malcolm X's points went unreported by the media as well. The least they could have done is to point out how things have changed since the days of Malcolm X. Essentially, they took a 10 minute speech and spun it to serve their own purposes.
By the way, I could be wrong, but Zawaheri's voice sounds a lot younger than the voice heard on tapes from years past. Check YouTube.

As and when Obama moves to implement his plan to "win" in Afghanistan, there are going to be a lot more people in the Muslim world who will be sharing one or another variant of this view. The relative isolation of Al Qaeda and its ultrasectarian reactionary politics should not delude. Obama has a more positive image in the world today than US imperialism, but his image cannot be maintained, nor the US one improved in any substantial way, without a change in deeds, not just the individual at the top.
As for the campaign beginning to portray al-Zawahiri as racially slurring Blacks by calling Obama a "house negro" and comparing him unfavorably to Malcolm X (the most popular and admired US Muslim leader in the country's history), that's a judgment that peoples who will be victimized if Obama carries out his stated policy have every right to make.

I'm not worried that Obama will take very good care of us at home and find a way to help the people of the middle east live in modernity and in peace. You are right, he poses a great threat to you because he stands for peace and justice and working with all kinds of people to help solve the horrible problems we all live with in this terribly out of balance world we live in.
