Glenn Beck delivers commencement address at Liberty Univ.
Here is the first 7 min of Beck's rambling and disjointed address yesterday. Apologies for the video quality as it was recorded off the tv screen itself, by a fan of Beck I assume.
The Lynchburg News & Advance describes the spectacle as so:
Fox News commentator Glenn Beck, a conservative firebrand and prominent figure in the Tea Party movement, stayed away from politics during his commencement speech, instead dishing advice such as “look to God and live.”
Beck received an honorary degree from Liberty. He never graduated from college but spent one semester at Yale University when he was 30, he said, leaving because he could not afford the tuition.
Beck, who is Mormon, delivered a speech that emphasized the power of faith in righting a country that he said has gone off track.“I look at the things that are facing you today: the worst economy in generations, the euro on the road to collapse, we’re spending ourselves into oblivion…” he said. “We live in a time where you must have great courage; you must have great faith. We live in a time where it seems truth is on the run.”
His message to the graduates was peppered with tears, humor and even some offbeat wisdom, such as “cabs smell worse in the summer” and “labels are meaningless, but Louis Vuitton shoes are really the best.”A significant portion of the ceremony was devoted to honoring the university’s founder.
As for paper's assertion that he "stayed away from politics", Beck sure spent a lot of time railing against the Obama administration and trying to link Obama himself with book burners and Adolf Hitler, as is his wont to do. Later he would offer the advice "Shoot to kill", which you can hear in context.
I suppose it is fitting that a ceremony designed to honor the memory of Jerry Falwell, the university’s founder, would feature Glenn Beck.
Later in the day Beck would address the NRA's Celebration of American Values Freedom Experience [sic], where "10,000 stood and roared."
Beck, backed by his familiar chalkboard, depicted a nation that has lost its faith in God, honor and American institutions.
"We have to think of something, because the Titanic is going down," he said. "We need to save the passengers, that's what we need to worry about. Let the ship sink if we have to. We have a great plan: It's called the Constitution, and we'll build another one."
In the end it's hard to decide which is the more depressing fact: that Glenn Beck should be awarded an honorary doctorate from anywhere or that Liberty University itself exists. Probably both are equally offensive.

What do you mean "earned a degree"? They can't study any science, it conflicts with their version of reality, and, they study a warped version of history. What they "earned" is a piece of paper that's not worth two cents to anyone that isn't a complete whackjob. Nobody in their right mind would hire one of these fools to do a serious job.
But don't they have to conform to state standards? I know that still might not mean much but at least it is something. Here in the west colleges, even private colleges, have to conform to the state standards.

You've convinced me that Falwell et al have managed to build a legitimate university, recognized as such by people whose job it is to say "no" to sub-par schools. Say what you will about the South, but the Virginia Bar Exam is no walk in the park; a 94.4% first-pass rate is something that any university has a perfect right to jump up and down about.
On the other hand, Liberty U has been (probably permanently) associated in the minds of conservatives and liberals alike, authoritarians and libertarians alike, as a school joined at the hip to Falwell's televangelistic philosophies on religion and politics. I personally have met Liberty U graduates who were progressive by almost any standard, as well as those at the opposite end of the spectrum. In other words, against the direction it was set upon at its founding, it's managed to become much like any other American university, perhaps even less conservative or authoritarian than some.
So how did the people who gave four years of their life to getting an education, living through some fairly odd (or 'unique,' depending on your perspective) aspects of LIberty's on-campus culture, get saddled with Glenn Beck for a commencement speaker? He really has far less in common with them than even their school administration/early alumni do. I don't know that I would have "gone to the campus bar and got totally [messed] up," but I would feel disillusioned, angry, and cheated... and thankful to have survived long enough to grab my sheepskin and get far, far away from the place.

I love how Glenn opens up with a sob story about how he couldn't afford college (like his fellow wing nut Hannity). Later he spills the beans that he went at the age of thirty and only took one course.
A simple Google search turns up the real story. Glenn went on a special program, was sponsored by Joe Lieberman and it was a theology class. Also it turns out the reason he couldn't afford the Yale tuition is because he was getting divorced which was mainly due to his addictions.
This leads me to a number of conclusions
- Beck never had any real interest in higher education, he could have gone to school earlier or to less expensive school
- Beck loves to feel sorry for himself
- Maybe the teacher was asking him to stop reading The Book of Mormon so he would stop asking about magic underpants
- Lieberman was a d-bag even back in the 90's

If you listen to and or watch any of these three douche bags and take even the slightest phrase that leaves their mouths as intelligent, true, or worse, in the interest of America, you have been transformed.
