FL-Sen: Marco Rubio, the new face of the GOP
By scarce Tuesday May 12, 2009 4:30pm
Meet the new face of the Republican Party as embodied by Marco Rubio (37), previously the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. Rubio announced a few days ago his candidacy for U.S. Senate in 2010.
Now, normally a relatively unknown and young politician has no chance against a popular and nationally known political figure, as Rubio will have to contend with Florida governor Charlie Crist. Crist will have an enormous financial edge and all the institutional support he could ever want (the NRSC has already endorsed Crist, who announced earlier today).
And yet it is Crist's supposed moderate views, and especially his support of Obama's stimulus program earlier this year which just might make him a target of ultra conservative republicans in Florida, of whom Rubio would also be a member. Crist's move was seen as pure apostasy, and he was called out on it by Limbaugh, Hannity and others. The fact that Marco Rubio is also young, good-looking and telegenic, well-spoken and fluently bilingual in both english and spanish won't hurt his cause either. Coupled with the fact that his being a hard-core wingnut is not seen simply as an added bonus, it's now a necessity of the republican party.
Of course, this may mean the GOP's Civil War is about to break out in Florida. Pass the popcorn.

These Cuban-American Repubs...they get all the looks but none of the brains.
He's probably hoping to get grandpop's sugar plantation back from the Castro's in Cuba.
It's like the fifth season of a sitcom. They're not even funny anymore. You just quit watching.
Ross and Rachel
Sam and Diane
Niles and Daphne
etc....
Benito and Clara
Newt and (insert name here)
Rush and Rush
Bill and Falafel
Have the right's conservatives beat up its moderates. Keep building the hatred and division in it's own party and watch the moderates move left. I see a 62 36 2 Senate in 2010. My kid some day will find a fossil of Boehner's cheek bone in the stream behind my shed. We'll have DNA test done to determine its real age.
Make sure that all of the conservative Republicans in FL know that Crist could be "teh gay."
And, and, and, he might surreptitiously be in favor of shoving the gay agenda down the throats of America. [Double-entendre absolutely, positively, intended.]
for Mr. Crist? It's not if, it's when.
Check out why Rubio's Speaker of the House successor Ray Sansom recently resigned and is now indicted for multiple bizarre and hilarious kickbacks and quid pro quos. And a previous Speaker, Feeney, was just defeated for reelection to Congress for his Abramoff golfing trip to Scotland. Last year, I debated the mext Speaker, Dean Cannon, on NPR who may be the first semi-sane person to head the GOP-dominated House of wingnuts which really runs the Florida (Crist is just a powerless figurehead Gov the way W was in Texas). Rubio, by the way, has zero chance of winning the primary here -- no ex-Speaker has been elected in a statewide office in like 100 years. Too bad there's no big name Dem to run here.
to overcome before we'll be free to do anything successfully.
being a millionaire is the highest goal of life.
What 3rd party candidate can we throw money at to split the dipshits ticket?
Interesting idea. There must be a Libertarian party candidate in Florida.
GO, MARCO, GO!
Where can I donate money to this guy's campaign?
.
Dear G(no)P,
Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R) is teh gay.
... And we all know how that's gonna shape up.
Maybe Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R) can blow Karl (R)ove a kiss...
.
Crist can also blow one to Mark Foley (R).
It was too easy, but I couldn't resist.
I'm glad you did.
Read today that the Repug big wigs have decided to throw their support behind Crist , doubt there'll be any big fight . Crist is going to be the Republican party savior now.
Who the hell coined the term "Republicanism"?
The main reason these weak Repubs get into any FL offices is the crazy gerrymandering that took place while Jeb Bush was Gov. Most of these districts divide minorities and don't truly reflect the multi-cultural nature of FL. The gerrymandering is designed to divide up liberal demographics and to protect Repubs and Conservatives Demos stay in office. It was with the overwhelming support of new Obama supporters that we are finally sprouting some promising progressive faces ( Rep. Grayson (Orlando) for instance.)
Another reason for Repubs doing well in FL is the greedy-ass bastards who live on some of the most expensive land in the US. I just had to laugh when Repubs chanted drill-baby-drill when it came to FL. No millionaire is going to let his Repub lapdog spoil his view of the ocean just to satisfy some idoit Repub Wash. PR outfit. No Way IN Hell.
Finally, Charlie Crist may be a lightly closeted gay man that hides behind his NY/FL socialite wife, and supports a perpetual tan, but Crist is one shrewd politician. There are rumors that if he gets too much grief from these true-blue Rush Lambaugh want-a-bees, Crist will take his marbles with him and go Independent and pull a Lieberman on them.
Wonders never ever cease in 50-50 FL.
The incredible shrinking GOP. Love it. But yet, they're just not conservative enough. Hope they keep it up.
More of the repeat, redo and no new ideas coming from the "New Republican" Party.
Looks like FL will be in competition with PA for the biggest loser in GOPper land.
Are you implying that Charlie about to make a move on President Obama?
Notice how republicans NEVER EVER show their front teeth?
they all talk with their BOTTOM JAW showing teeth only.
Like a bunch of bulldogs.
Maybe it's inbreeding that the top of the jaw does not protract enough.
but horrible on the inside. Guess this is a perfect example of beauty only being skin deep.
