LEHRER: Now that, of course, was Gov. Bobby Jindal, the governor of Louisiana, making the Republican response. David, how well do you think he did?

DAVID BROOKS: Uh, not so well...I oppose the stimulus package because I thought it was poorly drafted but to come up at this moment in history with a stale 'government is the problem, we can't trust the federal government,' it's just a disaster for the Republican Party. The country is in a panic now. They may not like the way the Democrats have passed the stimulus bill. But the idea that we're just going to... That government will have no role, the federal government has no role in this, that in a moment when only the federal government is big enough to actually do stuff- to just ignore all that and just say 'government is the problem, corruption, earmarks, wasteful spending,' it's just a form of nihilism. It's just not where country is it's not where the future of the country is. There's an intra-Republican debate: some people say the Republican Party lost its way because they got too moderate, some people say they got too weird or too conservative. He thinks they got too moderate. And so he's making that case. I think it's insane. I just think it's a disaster for the [Republican] Party. I just think it's unfortunate right now.

Brooks is the material display of where the Republican party is currently located.

To be sure, Republicans, particularly conservative Republicans, are not going away any time soon. I do believe their influence and power is waning and will continue to wane, but lets remember that Bush was selected for two terms and that approximately 59,940,000 American citizens thought McCain and Palin should be running the country.

My own sister used to feel only the lazy were poor - until she was laid off and her home value tanked and she was stuck applying to Wendy's and WalMart even with her law degree.

Sometimes it takes personal misfortune to open someone up to liberal ideas of helping your fellow man. Of course, she's not a Christian so it was easier, otherwise she'd still be voting Republican. The only thing Christ hated more than liberalism is gays!

)O(

Well problem solved

The economic situation is so dour

None of us are feeling very gay

Anymore.

Say the fucking last 8 years were a disaster for the repubs

AND the country. Brooks is a bich, but sometimes he can't

help but speak rationally. Like his Palin slap!

why do you at the GOP absolutely hate homemakers, you mean?

Sure, they don't go for sanity, like Chuck Hagel, or someone of that stature.

Jindal came off looking and sounding like a total knob. What's with that cheesy barber-shop pole tie? Somebody needs to dress that guy. He just made Obama look better. The Republicans are in real trouble, and they deserve every bit of it and more.

Nader wasn't Men's Wearhouse material either and he knocked Gore a good one in Florida back in 2000.

But Nader has a brain.

Gore knocked himself with that knob Lieberman.

A fine man. I'm thinking the GOP dream ticket for 2012 is he and Palin. You know,as the final nail in the GOP's relevance to anything that matters.

Jindal walked to the camera and sort of reached out his hand in such a socially awkward way. He reminded me of those pencil-necked geeks in jr. high school who have no social skills. Americans may want their Presidents to be "smart" in a sharp way, but we don't elect nerds. Look up Adlai Stevenson for an example. Obama is Harvard smart, but also he's athletic (sinks 3-pointers, works out every day) and very at ease physically, kind of like JFK was, without JFK's bad back. In the television age, that's very important. Even in the unlikely event that the country swings back to Jindal's philosophy of no-government nihilism, I can't imagine that Jindal himself could ever be elected President.

David Brooks is a typical opportunist. He TRIES to play both sides, but the fact is that he hopped on the GOP bus cause he thought that that was where his fortunes best laid.

Now that the bus is careening toward the cliff, he's trying to jump off.

didn't Jindal play one of them in The Big Lebowski? "These men are cowards, donnie!"

You say... The Big Lebowski?

i respect brooks. he's a republican he doesn't hide that fact. he has been very critical of his party and their agenda. my gut during the jindal rebuttal was this is a joke but that's NO surprise. the (R)/NEOCON party has an identity problem. they are experiencing major disconnect with the public. brooks is a good
journalist in my opinion. even when i don't agree with him he's worth listening to especially compared to other right wing journalists.

Compared to what? A court stenographer? HS newspaper editor? the weekend obituary writer?

Preach it!

Best reply in a LONG time!!!

Court stenographer LOL!!!

Forget the Ritalin "bobby," next time you give an important speech, use these:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddTBeNv9PwQ

The other day Burke wrote about Obama's advisors saying they "caused my Burkean alarm bells to go off." It is clear Jindal's speech has the oppositie effect Obama's oratory has on Chris Matthews legs. Jindal's jive makes Brooks Burkean bells shrivel.

is not just a river in Egypt.

)O(

Still longing for the good ol' days of Nixon--yeah, that'll work too.

Thanks for that link... it proves my take that the republican(t)s are all mentally ill and definitely careening over the cliff.

THAT was amazing. Dellinger must be joking. Otherwise, I suggest the authorities find that guy and throw him in a padded cell, before he hurts somebody.

Lordy, lordy, LORDY....!

Jindal is a charisma-less no-talent, on display only because he's brown skinned. If Bobby Brady were a Democrat, the Conservatives would surely label him a terrorist sleeper cell.

No doubt you're right - I notice nobody's been calling him out for being an obvious Muslim! I mean, look at him.. :) Everybody just accepts that he is what he says he is.. Exorcism-participating fundamentalist whack..

Yeah, I'm "surprised" the people still looking for Obama's birth certificate have no problems with Jindal.

Trust the fucked up shell of the former republic party to pick a consummate college republican candy-ass yellow elephant wimp as their "Great Brown Hope". The little milquetoast couldn't even beat Bristol Palin in an arm wrestling match.

)O(

What is "Bobby" Jindal's real first name, Senator?

Gesundheit!!

Oh Snap!

Coming soon...to a Walmart near YOU...FORMER Governor Bobby Jindal.

)O(

Dont'cha mean a Quicky-Mart

Mopping floors for this guy?

faster than sound, some people appear to be bright until you hear them speak.

... since RED light means an object is moving away from you, and BLUE means it's coming towards you.

And

the Special Relativity award ("Time really slows down when your relatives are visiting!") goes to Shadowgm!!

Run Jindl Run !!!! PLEASE RUN. America needs you to run in 2012.

Then you can be crushed like Alan Keyes.

are the reborn Confederacy.

I like Brooks, always listen to him and Shields give their comments on the Newshour on PBS.

I don't always agree with him, but he is one of the few R's that I will listen to. I wish more rethugs would be as open to working with democrats as in days' past.

Mikey grew up to become Bobby. He hates everything and everyone.

)O(

He's just to "safe" kind of like a puppy you want to pat on the head.

I make it a point to avoid knowingly touching a republican for any reason on the off-chance that whatever is eating their brains might be catching.

sure, brooks tries to give the appearance of sanity, of responsibility and some sense, but this clip only further displays brooks' effort to continue the false assertion that jindal believes that "government is the problem, we can't trust the federal government". clearly this is NOT the reality. jindal is taking how much of stim money? like, what, 90% of it?

no, the argument that brooks is trying to put forward is false, and he knows it. the way he framed the debate (that jindal is some sort of "free" market warrior, sticking to his market fundamentalist guns) is patently wrong. it only serves to bolster jindal's position in wingnutty land.

jindal does NOT believe that 'government is the problem, we can't trust the federal government', jindal does NOT believe that. almost no elected GOP thug believes that (paul aside). it is a rumor that must be dispelled.

this goes hand in hand with the false notion that the right wing is anti-regulation... so many myths to dispell...

*waves dispell wand*

is one of the "brightest stars" Pubs have to offer was that the point last night or didn't anyone else want to doom their career as a politician?

and he lost.

... Moosegirl would have, but she had to give back her clothes.

seems they just grabbed someone and shoved them at gunpoint in front of the camera and said . ."READ IT"

.

they were gonna compare the size of their penises...but Bobby threw in the towel cause he was going to go head to head with Kaye Bailey Hutchinson.

watch Bobby. My first thought was "you got to be kidding me?" after about the first minute. Maybe they should just do these Republican responses on Idol.

"Republicans went along with earmarks and big government spending in Washington".

"Went along"? That's just dumb enough to be funny.

The DEVIL made them do it!

Bobby is going to run on the "I have exorcised the Devil from the GOP platform"!!

Gov. Bobby Jindal announced Friday that the state plans to reject as much as $98 million in federal unemployment assistance in the economic stimulus package

so, following the logic of david brooks, rejecting $98 million of federal funds, and accepting the rest (and the overwhelming majority) is taking a 'govt is the problem' stance?

come on, this is obviously all bullshit--both jindal's hypocrisy, and brooks acceptance of said hypocrisy. david brooks is simply awful. terrible.

if you accept their rules expect to lose.

Are the Republicans, they're the real disaster!

The rebuttal was so bad that I think it also damaged Jindal's hope for a presidential run in 2012 or 2016. So, I guess the GOP is stuck with Caribou Barbie.

even his ancestors won't be able to run for public office.

SUCKED in his big speech at the '88 Democratic Convention, and 4+ years later he was president.

Jindal is a little creep, but I imagine he has enough strengths as a politician to overcome this little setback.

Jindal is supposedly a rising star, the next Republican nominee for president. But he has no charm or charisma, he's a poor speaker, he spouts simplistic cliched ideas that insult his audience, so I have to ask, why are they thinking he's the next big thing? I think I know. It's because he's brown. The Repubs look at Obama and all they see is the brown. The thinking must go, if they run their own brown guy then they can win back the presidency from the Democrats' brown guy. And for good measure, they made the other brown Republican head of the party. These people have no brains and no souls.

Holy Cow, Pat Buchanan is on MSNBC right now smack talking BJ. Boy you must really suck at being a Wingnut if Pat B. slams you. He was saying Caribou Barbie was the Greatest. Thing. Ever. up until election day.

The three freshest turds in the G.O.P. talent pool

I want to know where this debate is being held. It certainly is not being held in public. Who are the voices saying that the GOP has become too weird? I don't hear them, I only hear the other side, and Jindal is unambiguously on the 'weird' side.

This jerk-off Brooks is trying, not to subtly, to state that there are still voices of reason in the GOP. As usual with conservative commentators, there are no facts to support him.

Hmm..could it be the voices of reasonable GOPers like Strom Thurmond and Richard Nixon speaking to him from the great beyond?

.."They may not like the way the Democrats have passed the stimulus bill."

Who is this "..they.." you speak of?
Is it the electorate that has been tossing the GOP out of office? Is that who you're talking about? Look, the GOP lost the last election; get over it! Jindal's response and in essence, the GOP response, was L..A..M..E, period, exclamation point. Yes it was a disaster for the GOT (Gang of Thieves) because they got us into this mess and would have us continue all of their failed policies. They have contributed nothing but obstruction to the Stim Plan, so in the eleventh hour, they get nothing!

I think he should have said ANOTHER BIG disater for the Republican party. They're on a roll.

for the disaster Bush left for the Republican party. Just for joining.

but the fact that he joined them makes him just as bad

That's funny, Dick Cheney said he didn't care if the GOP didn't win in the elections. It explains a lot.

The Bible is filled with admonitions against being dishonest and lying. One of the Ten Commandments states:

"Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour." Exodus 20:16

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" Ah, Christianity, that religion that's not practiced.

Well, I certainly do not agree with Brooks on a very regular basis. Still, I commend for calling Jindal "insane" in his attempts to condemn the Federal Government. At this point, as Brooks clearly realizes, it is far too late to be blaming the government and saying they must be kept out. That would have been an acceptable debate eight to ten years ago. Now, the Federal Government is involved, no matter what the Louisiana Governor might say. I don't think his response could have been more unhelpful.
