So what do you say to a news reporter when asked how you'll improve relations with the Latino community after four of your police officers were just busted by the FBI for racial profiling? Well, you probably wouldn't say this.

Story and video from WPIX.

EAST HAVEN, Conn. (PIX11)— Latinos in East Haven, Conn. say they have lived in fear of local authorities for years. However, a feeling of shock and relief came Tuesday after news broke of the arrests of four rogue police officers who are accused of systematically targeting Latinos with unlawful search and seizures, traffic stops and even physical abuse.

Despite the indictments for race-fueled attacks on the community, East Haven Mayor Joe Maturo added more fuel to the fire Tuesday by saying he "might have tacos" as his first step to repair relations with the Latino community.

On Wednesday, Conn. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy called Matruo's comment racially insensitive.

"The comments by East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo are repugnant. They represent either a horrible lack of judgment or worse, an underlying insensitivity to our Latino community that is unacceptable. Being tired is no excuse. He owes an apology to the community, and more importantly, he needs to show what he's going to do to repair the damage he's done. And he needs to do it today."

"You could be Italian, Irish, or Polish.. it doesn't matter to me" (as long as you are white?)
the Mayor sounds like a great example for the Police dept.
He really is tone deaf, an indication of his low sensitivity to the question he was asked.
No ideas from him on how to address the issue other than those are just "alleged' crimes that brought the FBI into his town.
The Government did say the investigation is still active and there is the potential for more arrests.

Wow, and he was spoiling for a fight too.

East Haven's Democratic Town Committee chairman is calling on Maturo (R) to resign. The local Republican Party chairman told the New Haven Register on Wednesday that he might address the situation publicly later in the day, but had no immediate comment.

Wall Street is just a parasite on the actual labor and investments of average Americans.

Does this racist country have to go through another few decades before we drop the "bash the new immigrants" crap? I wonder how many Clancy's in this department had Irish, Polish, or Italian ancestors who got the shit kicked out of them by WASP cops a hundred years ago for walking the streets at night.

Contrary to what conservatives will say, there are only TWO things about this country that have been the same since the beginning, have been constants in American society.

One is change. This country has been changing ever since Europeans came here (and in fact well before that too).

In New York people spoke Dutch, and there are quite a few towns left with Dutch names. The foods have changed. The environment has changed (American Chestnuts made up the bulk of all eastern forests and were THE major foodstuff until the early 1800s. Now gone.)
Demographically we have been in constant flux.

The other thing that is a constant is that ever since the beginning the children of immigrants have been complaining about newer immigrants.

Protestant Irish detested Catholic Irish in the 1830s and thought the country was going to hell. The Dutch probably hated the English and Protestant Irish.

Asians, then Italians, then Eastern Europeans... all arrived and were detested and discriminated against and pilloried in editorial cartoons, and then when their children were able to they passed along the "favor" to the newer arrivals.

Which is why right now in Buffalo and Chicago and other cities you have the children and grandchildren of Polish immigrants complaining about "Mexicans*" (which means anyone who speaks Spanish even if they're from Peru.) Complaining about bilingual government paperwork, etc.

Meanwhile they go home, Babcia or YiaYia still speak Polish or Greek, of the dozens of non-English newspapers each city in the country had in 1900 some still survive (the AmPol Eagle) etc... but that doesn't count.

That's merely "celebrating our heritage" and although they are members of fraternals like the Polish Union of America and eat Polish food and attend festivals and read papers in the language, when "Mexicans" do that it's because they just refuse to assimilate.

Racism. As American as apple pie. Built the Washington Monument and the US Capital Building.
Now builds our iPads.

Hooray for the USA.

What with the neo-fascist debates, insanity in Wisc., Mich., Ohio, Az., NJ., Fla., (among others), and the antics of clowns like this guy I'm starting to feel like we're in a scary replay of THe Reich, circa 1938. And really, Obama and his corporatist cabal are doing nothing but offering themselves as a more slowly evolving version of the same totalitarian inevitability. As hopeful as the OWS movement may be, it appears certain that before any "change that we can believe in" occurs in this country the reality will more likely resemble the upheavel currently playing out in the Middle East than some form of peaceful and reasonable civil disobedience. Never were more truer words spoken.

Very sad, and scary.

When are people going to stop deluding themselves here. The problem isn't Obama being "the same", it's that, fundamentally some of the things we dislike about the way this country is run are endemic to the country itself.

It's like, we asked this guy to drive a tank, but complained that he looks "too aggressive". Like we put him in charge of Eli Lilly, and complained that he's running it "like a drug company".

He may be the president, but he's not a god, nor even really near total control of this country. He's beholden to this country's current momentum, historical behavior, and accepted norms. The United States, itself, is a racist and militaristic institution. When you strip away all the exceptionalism, historical myth, and whitewashing, we're a rather selfish, brutal, and callous people with a high standard of living. And, when we boil it down, the latter is all we (and every immigrant) really care about. The average person in this country is well aware of the fact that they're oppressed, and the threat of violent oppression by our masters is only second to the fear of violent seizure of our property by those poorer than us, when it comes to keeping us (the rabble) in line.

Lincoln, the "greatest president" didn't just wave his hands and end slavery by force of will. There was a brutal war, with countless dead. That's what happens when you try to turn the ship around midstream, the current and the waves sluice over the sides and carry some of the sailors away.

But it was funny.

his brain is missing. If you wish to know, the East Haven P.D. has been on a bender of bad behavior for quite some time now. I apologise up-front for not providing links, (just don't have the time right now), but, as I say, if you wish to know, research Mahlik Jones (sp?), and go from there.

...to this reporter. He is an example of what MOST reporters fail to be. He asks follow-up questions and doesn't accept bullshit answers. I guess we'll never see HIM on Faux news. But that mayor may only go to Faux news to be interviewed from now on.

Oh for crying out loud... It's like watching a Ricky Gervais show. He seems really uncomfortable and most likely on something - I wonder if he was so terrified of being on camera he had a couple of shots before the reporter got there and it blew up in his face. Getting snippy with the reporter and pretending he was the victim makes it very difficult to give him anything like the benefit of the doubt, though.

Well done to that reporter for staying on the comment, explaining why it's a problem and not allowing him to wriggle out of it. Just about any major news network would have certainly let it slide and then started a post hoc hand-wringing affair wondering if it was a racist comment, just so they could make some cash out of the controversy. This guy actually remembered what his job is.
