I heard it was bad. I didn't know it was this frigging bad.

Video by ABC5, Des Moines. Story by The Iowa Republican (from the website, "news for Republicans by Republicans").

This is a disaster,” said one prominent Polk County Republican. An elected official called it “an embarrassment”. The embarrassing disaster was the result of Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann’s last minute cancellation of her appearance at the Polk County GOP’s Robb Kelley Dinner. Bachmann’s absence turned what should have been a very successful fundraiser into a black eye for herself, her presidential aspirations and the county party.

Over 300 Republicans paid $75 per ticket to meet and listen to Bachmann. Media from around the country, and even as far away as Norway, descended on Des Moines to cover the event. Extra security was arranged. Speculation rose that she might announce a bid for the presidency at the event. Bachmann squashed that rumor the day before. Then, two hours before the event was scheduled to start, she informed Polk County GOP officials she would not be able to attend.

The scheduling conflict arose because of a House vote on extending the Patriot Act. Backup plans were made for her to use a private jet. In the end, nothing worked and Bachmann was unable to make it. Instead, she appeared on choppy and blurry Skype-style video. Local Republicans were extremely displeased.

“It’s awful,” said activist Becky Irvin. “She just shot herself in the foot. She dissed Iowa. You don’t diss Iowa.” The Patriot Act extensions passed easily, 250-153. Bachmann’s presence was not vital. However, some attendees gave her the benefit of the doubt. “I don’t like it, but I understand,” said John Kline.

A sucky video didn't help matters.

The Minnesota congresswoman’s speech-by-video only made matters worse. Bachmann made the mistake of name-dropping Donald Trump during her talk. “Donald Trump was right, we are getting our tail kicked by China,” she said. Last week, Trump cancelled his scheduled appearance at a Republican Party of Iowa fundraiser. Bachmann was clearly ignorant or tone deaf to that controversy.

She apparently was not ignorant of the fact that people were bored by watching her speak on a poor quality video, because Bachmann apologized for being “longwinded”. She then opened it up for questions, but by that point, a significant portion of the crowd had seen enough. Several dozen attendees got up and left. Bachmann then answered two questions, taking several minutes responding to each. “I found myself zoning out and didn’t really follow it,” said one Polk County central committee member and event volunteer.

Kevin Hall delivers the final coup de grâce: comparing Bachmann's fundraiser disaster to the stink left by Newt Gingrich's roll-out.

Nothing about Michelle Bachmann seemed presidential Thursday night. Many people thought Newt Gingrich sunk his campaign in the week after his presidential announcement. Bachmann might have dealt a fatal blow to her campaign before she announces.

"You don’t diss Iowa"

This is why we need election reform and doing away with the electoral college.

keinsignal's picture

I don't know about removing the electoral college - you need some way to make sure the rural states aren't completely ignored by candidates - but the primary system needs an overhaul. There is no reason whatsoever why Iowa and New Hampshire should have so much influence, year after year.

That having been said, it's nice to see Bachmann brings the same perspicacity to her campaigning as she does to, well, everything else.

Course ours was movie fiction.

That was Iowa real life.

In Iowa movie fiction dead people come to play baseball.

In Texas real life dead people come to vote. Alphabetically.

I love the way all the Iowa Republicans in this article assume that if they, personally, don't approve of the candidate, that's it, they're done- their presidential ambitions are toast.
Bunch of bitchy little girls: "I didn't get a backrub and pedicure from Michele Bachmann, so I can't personally approve her for the rest of the US."

Boring, poor-quality video that left the audience "zoning" or walking out?

Are you sure they didn't give an impromptu screening of the Palin Movie instead?

remember her huge gaffe at her "State of the Union" rebuttal when she spent the whole speech looking at the wrong camera? Little Michelle had better get herself some savvier communications people.

And a better scheduler.

She wanted to be able to brag during her campaign that she voted to extend the Patriot Act. Funny, the Patriot Act vote may have ended her campaign before it started.

You have to give these republican candidates credit for being straight shooters. They take aim at their foot, fire and hit the target every time.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Hard to believe a politician as brilliantly savvy as Bachman could foul up.

That said, I nonetheless believe she remains the ideal candidate to represent that party in 2012. She epitomizes everything the GOP stands for.

NavSpecWarVet's picture

Well, she did say that she was praying to God for an answer. Maybe God told her not to go to Iowa. Maybe she's just not telling the good folks in Iowa the real reason she didn't come there.

Crustyolcarpenter's picture

that The Fear And Loathing Act is passing by narrower and narrower margins each time. When enough reps grow some balls and extinguish it, it will be a sign of your country's turning away from a very dark chapter of manufactured propaganda in action. Bachwoman has to be on record voting for every piece of draconian legislation her owners tell her to, they don't care a whit about electoral college rules, what they are intended for, or to remedy. The rules exist for their benefit to be manipulated to their end...............screw Iowa.

The first casualty of republicanism is the truth.
Party politics are not only undemocratic, they are antidemocratic.

The GOP wait for a woman? No, that won't fly, unless of course it's the huge money that's backing her run, then Iowa can be pissed off all they want and it won't make a difference.

Mitt will be their candidate in the end for the simple reason he has the most money of all of them and we know money attracts money. The others are wasting their time but it looks like the American public is destined to be informed about every idiotic move they make. The powers that be and their media enablers don't want us to know much else.
