Former Vice President Gore and Senator Warner testified on the American Clean Energy Security Act of 2009 this morning before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) lived up to her reputation as an ultra partisan hack by attacking Al Gore's motives on climate control. Not a wise move, as she elicited snickers with her transparent attempt.

Yet Bush and Cheney had ties in energy companies, United Defense Industries, and nation building "Halliburton" and were able to keep those ties while they used the US military and tax payer money to execute a war in two oil rich nations driving the price of oil up to record levels. A war that greatly benefited the Defense Industry and Halliburton directly.

but I was sad at what the country went through. NOW I look at what we have in Minnesota and I think differently. It's April 25 and I still have only one Senator and it will probably be June before we have Frankin in Washington. The Republicans were in power in the Senate and House when Clinton left. We were in turmoil. The fight that would have occurred would have been brutal and Al Gore would have lost even if he won. He's doing more for the country and the world by his mission now.

1. Technically they are. They are simply assembled overseas by other companies from other countries. It's complicated, and it's a product of globalisation. I'll detail in a minute.
2. The USA has vastly higher wage costs than China or Vietnam or Korea, so that tends to preclude onshore production, hence the offshore production in point #1.
Now about that little trick about Chinese production being American Production... Follow along...
Pretend you own a Solar Cell Company. We'll Call it SCC. And it is located in, ummm... New Jersey. Now, remember - Solar Cells are extremely toxic to build. And NJ, being, historically, a state of incredible pollution, is trying to fix that, so certain polluting heavy industries have to pay extra to be there. So, SCC finds that it can't compete against other American Solar companies, so the factory gets moved to Alabama where wages are way cheaper and the place is run by Republican shitheads who don't give a flying rats patootie about the environment. This allows the company to make more profit and reinvest in the company and keep the shareholders happy. Fine except for the NJ schlub who's out of work.
Then it becomes feasible to build a solar plant in China. So, SCC liquidates the Alabama factory and moves production to China, where all the pollution and craptastic wages are visited upon the Chinese. So, now you are an American Company making solar Cells for Americans, but ripping off the Chinese peasants and destroying their rivers with Arsenic and tellurium and cyanide and all the other weird crap that goes into making Solar Cells, so little Muffy can toast her waffles in the morning.
Other companies get into the deal, and then a breakthrough is reached: rather than have American Factories, let the Chinese DO EVERYTHING. You just sell the SCC brand. Your cells are the ones with the green stripe down the middle. The BP ones have little BP flowers impressed at the corners. The GE ones have a blue strip going across. They are ALL made at the same factory, just on different machines.
The result? The brands compete for market share in the USA, while millions of Chinese people die early horrible deaths, all so Muffy can toast her waffles in the morning, because Jebus knows the chinese lineworkers can't afford these Solar Cells.
So, their exploitation and their pollution is NOT Chinese exploitation or Chinese Pollution. It is American exploitation and pollution, simply exported to a place where it can happen.
So, the fact they are not built in the USA, and the fact that Americans are unemployed is of no consequence to the equation. It's the classic problem of capitalist industrialism: over production and declining rates of profit against steady or rising wages. All the material work was offshored, and so then American overproduction was put into finance and real estate. As that system rolled up and exploited, it was impossible for it not to crash.
Now we are left with a world of declining resources, where the only possibility of economic growth is through conservation. In a typical capitalist fashion it will also be exploited, but that has a dead end, as it goes to irreducibles, or as one blogger (pretty smart for a guy) put it: granularities. (I steal a lot of my ideas from him...) He thinks we won't get to granularity, I think we're f*cked. but anyway, you get the picture.

And then it downed on me that, for the most part, all their complains about the warning labels were not motivated by their beliefs in freedom of expression, but because those warnings were affecting their sales. It turns out that for other artists those same labels usually translated into higher sales, thus those other artists loved those warning lables.
It was never about freedom of expression, but business.
Tipper Gore was a f*cking idiot, but other than some exceptions like Zappa... the whole lot of artists who a decade later would start a which hunt of their own, were as much if not even bigger group of degenerates.
This is an excellent example of why Republicans need to clean house. This woman was out to pull the rug out from Al Gore to keep the energy initiatives from going forward. There's nothing healthy in that mentality for the country. If we had more moderate Republicans the same question could be asked to bring transparency to the situation. This particular piece of video of Blackburn in and of itself does not make her look any particular way at all. She simply asks a question, perhaps loaded, but if I were Al Gore and I wanted to set the record straight on my potential profit from a transition to renewable energies I would want someone, friend or enemy, to ask me the very questions that Blackburn asked giving me the opportunity to clear the air.

I used to work in an office full of middle management "chicks" just like her. I told a group of women co-workers, "You know what the problem is here? All these "chicks" with power."
