Following the police brutality we saw at the Occupy Oakland protests this Tuesday night, Countdown's Keith Olbermann called on Oakland Mayor Jean Quan to either repent and allow the protesters to assemble freely, or resign, in his latest Special Comment.

...what are the chances of this actually happening? Is it right at none, or are we going to be crazy optimistic and say it's almost none? Hell, she's probably proud of what she did. Justifiably proud, too - morally reprehensible though it may be, kicking in the heads of a few malcontents is going to score her tons of points with the types of people who have enough money to, say, fund political campaigns, or, for example, give out cush jobs to former mayors who displayed sufficient loyalty while in office.

It wasn't likely when he called on Bush to resign, either. Doesn't mean it's not worth saying.

...America was the day reagan made that deal with iran or perhaps the income cap. Maybe you can say it was the day Glass-Steagall was repealed. Whatever, whenever you think the end of America started, we stand today at the brink of that end. Not in a blaze of patriotic fervor against a superior foe but at the hands of the wealthy, corporate forces and their political puppets. Yes, I think the republican'ts have won; they've proved that government doesn't work, "See how bad things can be when a dem is in the White House!" even as they figure out how twist that proverbial knife in the backs of all Americans. And the dems, Progressive my ass. They rolled over at every turn as a political entity and sacrificed the legacy FDR created and that started maybe with Clinton actually signing the end of Glass-Steagall or nancy pelosi not impeaching bush. Maybe it was obama not ENDing the bush tax cuts. We, the People, NEED to remove money from politics, we need to find and promote people with an idea that this country HAS a future that lies within its laws applied evenly and fairly among all people. We need to end reckless invasions of other nations and work to build consensus on the future of the planet. The end of America has started slowly and creeped up on us. Now without common sense ruling the day among the masses, the end is near and I fear the future will not allow me to say these things and would be pointless to try as the winners of the war usually get to write the history.
In case its not obvious, I am not usually optimistic self today.

Keoni: "NOT NOW MICKEY!"

It was the Income Cap. Can't believe people actually put those ugly things on their heads.

Interesting...

Good on Keith for calling for swift action.

Below is the proposal passed by the Occupy Oakland General Assembly on Wednesday October 26, 2011 in reclaimed Oscar Grant Plaza. 1607 people voted. 1484 voted in favor of the resolution, 77 abstained and 46 voted against it, passing the proposal at 96.9%. The General Assembly operates on a modified consensus process that passes proposals with 90% in favor and with abstaining votes removed from the final count.

PROPOSAL:

We as fellow occupiers of Oscar Grant Plaza propose that on Wednesday November 2, 2011, we liberate Oakland and shut down the 1%.

We propose a city wide general strike and we propose we invite all students to walk out of school. Instead of workers going to work and students going to school, the people will converge on downtown Oakland to shut down the city.

All banks and corporations should close down for the day or we will march on them.

While we are calling for a general strike, we are also calling for much more. People who organize out of their neighborhoods, schools, community organizations, affinity groups, workplaces and families are encouraged to self organize in a way that allows them to participate in shutting down the city in whatever manner they are comfortable with and capable of.

The whole world is watching Oakland. Let’s show them what is possible.

The Strike Coordinating Council will begin meeting everyday at 5pm in Oscar Grant Plaza before the daily General Assembly at 7pm. All strike participants are invited. Stay tuned for much more information and see you next Wednesday.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Not soon enough!

It would be interesting to see general strikes catch on across the nation.
