Shame on Chuck Todd for Citing Polls to Defend Racism

What do you mean "Americans" white man? I suspect Hispanic Americans, African Americans and Arab Americans tend to see their "safety" in slightly different terms.

I'd like to see the racial breakdown of that poll Todd was citing. As Dave already noted here, being a racist and in the majority doesn't make you right. Polls on Arizona immigration law remind us of a historic truth: Discarding the civil rights of others is always a popular idea. It would be nice if the Chuck Todds and Hardball producers of the world and their cohorts in the media took some time to read it. No instead Hardball had Tom Tancredo on and treated him as though he had something valid to say on the matter. I guess Michelle Malkin or David Duke weren't available.
Just a note that right wingers are claiming that this poll hasn't been shown on the librul media. I've seen it everywhere, so of course they are just repeating the lies they hear on Fox and Rush.
I saw the poll discussed on ABC this morning - guess ABC isn't "liberal" then?

I usually have great respect for Mr. Todd but this is just wrong and ignorant. Racial profiling is wrong and this whole notion of being able to tell who is a citizen in this country by their appearance is outright racism. I do not care what the polls are showing the Arizona law is clearly Unconstitutional and WRONG.
Sounds like you disagree with the majority cited in the poll, not with the Chuckster himself.

That's gross. I think it's been too long since the civil rights movement. It's becoming ok to be racist. People get angry at having to fill out the census because it's an invasion of privacy for them but we can profile. Hmmmmm.

The fact remains that the majority of those flooding through the border into southern states are Hispanic. What are we supposed to do, put out the welcome mat so as to not offend the Hispanic community? I can't believe the fear mongering on this side with this issue. Our rights will be taken away if we actively search out those who are in this country illegally. Give me a break, isn't a democracy supposed to be the majority rules? That is what is repeated over and over when it comes to Obama, he was voted in by the majority and I agree. What about this? Isn't it clear enough that the majority of Americans want to round the illegals up even if they have to check many who are here legally? Exactly what is unconstitutional about finding those who broke the law and came into this country? If a person who looked like he came from the middle east was seen running from a building that was blown up focusing on men who fit that description would be illegal? I guess when it comes to the Hispanic community it is OK if they break the law. To search amongst them for illegals that clearly are mostly Hispanic coming in from the south is wrong? I would agree with this law if it were a state looking for fair colored people coming in from Canada. I would be willing to present my drivers license or birth certificate to prove I am here legally if it meant catching those who have broken the law.
Illegal immigration is against the law. There is no easy fix. The government is afraid to offend the Hispanics so they sit there with their eyes closed and their hands covering their ears. The talk the talk but don't walk the walk. Finally Arizona has stepped up to the plate and is doing something about the problem and heads are exploding.
This article is about the poll and Todd's interpretation, not about whether it is illegal to be in this country without proper documentation. Nice try.

We stop destroying the livlihoods of people in Mexico and Central America with our cheap industrialized drone food, the production of which benefits very few people in this country and is a reason why we are becoming duller and fatter. NAFTA and the so-called world trade agreements have only been good for the few who control capital.. the people coming here are doing so because their miserable existences here might be marginally better than their miserable existences in their own countries. And as a matter of fact we do need workers and we should be making it possible for them to be here legally and have protections as American citizens.
A majority of Americans believed in slavery and segregation, believed that women shouldn't have the vote or even own property at one time and many Americans still believe that gay people don't deserve the same rights of citizenship as others- though maybe not quite a majority now, at least in some places. We have the Bill of Rights as a statement of principles to protect minorities. I agree that we should have secure borders but if we don't look at what's really going on we will never have them.. the reason we don't have them now is not because of the illegal immigration but because of the legal trade agreements which the people of this country have been conned into. We have monopoly and are told it is capitalism, we have plutocracy and are told it is democracy and we have world trade agreements and are told it is about 'free' trade..

Nice one MM! AZ's law is completely ass backwards and a clear violation of individual rights. Hopefully the courts will interpret the law in favor of our rights, which many have not thought out far enough. But very simpy put, if you are white a law like this does not affect you...for now.

Hold your horses there. Who exactly is "we?" Employers seeking to hire people at rock bottom wages and pass on the social and financial costs (in the form of higher crime rates, enormous medical and food subsidies, overcrowding of schools, etc.) to society at large?
I suppose you believe the businesses that hire these people are passing off the money they save in the form of cost savings to consumers? Between the off-shoring of jobs and the importation of cheap labor from south of the border to fill jobs that formerly paid living wages (e.g. construction, warehousing) the income gap in this country has skyrocketed over the last 30 years.
Yes, the free trade agreements and lack of government incentives to keep manufacturing in the U.S. created the problem, but your proposal, seen to practical fulfillment, will only make things worse. Liberals, in an attempt to appear "fair" and "broadminded," merely succeed at playing directly into the hands of the only ones truly benefiting from the way things currently are, the businesses that hire the illegals, then pass off the costs of supporting them to society at large.
If humanitarian reasons form the basis of your argument, then your position is a tenable one, but from the standpoint of reestablishing wage equilibrium in formerly viable job markets and avoiding subsidization of big business by taxpayers, you are way off base.
One point I do agree with you on is that the AZ law is clearly unconstitutional. Indeed, the only means of effectively dealing with the problem is by aggressively and uncompromisingly pursuing those who hire them. If liberals would stop thinking with their hearts and start thinking with their heads maybe we could get around to solving some of the nation's problems. I won't hold my breath.

A Democracy is by Majority Rule while safeguarding the rights of the Minority.
Voting in Obama did not prevent the minority from voting (for that pair).
Restricting marriage to heterosexuals prevents (hurts) the minority (of gays) to marry whom they love.

Maybe the problem is with AZ's law enforcement.
I'm in SW Fl and we have tons of illegals here, thanks to corporate hotels/restaurant chains, luxury communities and golf courses. But, we don't have a crime problem.
Maybe it's time to focus on law enforcement in AZ.

They never seem to show the demographics of the people in favor of the Arizona Discrimination Law: how many of the 2/3rd's polled are latino? How man are white?
I'm guess 99% of the 2/3rd's who support this bullshit are white people who will never be detained because they only had all their proper ID except for their birth certificate.
This is one time I have issues with what is being presented. Chuck Todd is just playing it straight down the middle. He is just saying what came out in the polls, just like as noted other news outlets did, and talked about it with not only Tom Tancredo but Maria Teresa Kumar of Voto Latino who did a damn fine job taking the opposite side of Tancredo.
