While discussing with Ed Schultz whether there is going to be a public option in the final health care bill once everything is said and done, Shultz reads off John Boehner's response from the Republicans saying that the Democrat's plan is a "government takeover" of health care. Schakowsky points out that Boehner's statement is of course complete bunk since no one is proposing single payer (sadly IMO) and they've already compromised with Republicans, so they've already got a bipartisan bill. She goes on to make one more really great point on the media's lousy coverage of this debate.

Schakowsky: Let me just say one other thing Ed about the news media. When myths are, or lies are told, it is not just he said she said. I like what you said. It is not true. It is simply a lie that this is a government takeover and I think that it really ought to be up to the media too, not to just report well this is what the Republican said then this is what the Democrat said and this is what the President said. They're telling lies! And I think they need to be called on it.

Amen sister.

And more of her truth-telling? I am sick to death of this untrue spinning, spinning and few are counteracting. Ms. Schakowsky is a notable exception!

"And I think they need to be called on it."

You "think"???

Jeez.

no one ever calls Boehner on any of his lies, I guess in another universe that would classify as liberal media. Just when the actual reporters planning on showing up, they have been missing since 9-11. Last time I seen something even close was the woman questioning Darth Cheney and actually played the video clip of him saying what he just said he never said. Now that was good reporting.

"The Republican corporate lackeys don't want heath care reform because it will provide competition for the private insurance industry."

Just say it instead of trying to look good on TV.

are you TRYING to be a wet blanket, or does it come to ya naturally?

. . .

Seriously.
you seem to be the only one on this site lately, that just HAS to find SOMETHING to piss and moan about something good like this.

sounds isn't much help while your opponent continually stabs you.

But I just can't help but picture you as the type that would complain about the quality of a free meal if you'd hadn't eaten for a week.

3P:

Depends on what's in the meal. I'm pretty particular sometimes.

but try goin without food for a week, and I guarantee you, you'll start considering fresh roadkill as a viable meal.
When I was homeless in Daytona years ago. I went for 3 or four days without food quite a few times.
I overcame my inhibitions about dumpster diving pretty damn quick.
Ya time it right, you can get a pretty decent meal if you're quicker than the other homeless people.

he is a sad, sad jerk. Gives progressives a bad name.

See, when I walk aeound, I eye dumpsters and wonder about public water supplies in the area for washing. It's my preparation for the bag lady I might end up becoming one day. I don't want it to be a shock when it happens. Be prepared!

This message needs to be said by everybody who talks on any media outlet! The first thing out of their mouths should be this meme.

Is Shakowsky actually suggesting that journalists do their job instead of just submitting RNC news releases to their editors. The horror.

The Washington Stenography Corps would have to begin thinking, and writing, and very likely really pissing off Karl (gasp) Rove, Glenn Beck and Ann Coulter.

Realistically, the suits in the top floor corner office would spike anything that wasn't a kissup to the Party of No, so maybe it's futile. Go have another latte boys.

A voice of sanity in Crazytown!! I agree with the Captain... say it over, and over, and over again until the efftards realize they'll be called out each and every time they LIE.

Damn, I love her! And yes, I know there is nothing wrong with that.

I'm thinking she should run for the Senate.

It's amazing how when someone like Rep. Schakowsky simply speaks truthfully that it's crystal clearly understood.

How come JanS isn't on Blue America's list to encourage by donating money to her?

Many more people need to speak out like Jan Shakowsky. The Republican lies are rampant, and they are not just about "government takeover" of the healthcare system.

The lies are about "death panels"; they're about the GOP sending out surveys/fundraisers with questions implying that an Obama plan will favor Democrats over Repuglicans when it comes to healthcare; the lies are about Obama bringing us to Naziism or Communism; the lies are about Obama taking away your guns; the lies are about Obama "indoctrinating" students with his "socialist ideology" in his upcoming speech to them; the lies are about Obama's plan will produce healthcare rationing; the lies are that the U.S. has the "best" healthcare system in the world.

The lies are about Repuglicans. "Lies" is their middle name.

I've been saying this for awhile....repuglicans are lying their asses off. I am sick of it.

Good for Representative Shakowsky. Democratic leaders really need to quickly get a big push out there to let people know how the repuglicans are lying....not just "myths"....but outright lies. There need to be national TV/cable commercials, not just a website that combats the lies.

recommend the off switch for the M$M.

The M$M have their own "take" on reality.

The M$M needs to be put out of business - period.

They are working on doing that to themselves just as fast as they can.

There is no such thing as "mainstream media". It is CORPORATE MEDIA.

Piss stream, Propaganda is not news. Tass/Pravda come to mind. Whatever happened to FCC regulation.............oh, self-regulating??? Really!

good job rep schakowsky

the dems (the ones that really do want to reform health care) and the left-leaning media need to go on the offensive more.

highlight disease profiteering by the insurance, and their very real death panels. expose the amount of money the likes of baucus and other political whores are raking in from the disease profiteers. highlight people like the poor woman in the wheelchair who was heckled by thugs and scum.

the strategy of merely responding to GOP lies is not working, as the dems are always on their heels. come out swinging. take no prisoners. cliche, cliche, cliche

I sure would't ever call PissStream Propaganda, Left-leaning. Freudian slip???

i was refering to the left leaning media (not to be confused with the corporate msm, which is exactly like you write "PissStream Propaganda"), however small and underfunded it might be.

"According to an independent study released last month by the Mayo Clinic, health insurance is the nation's No. 2 cause of death, claiming the lives of some 400,000 Americans each year. A silent killer, health insurance often strikes without warning, its harmful and profit-based policies avoiding detection until it is far too late. Although the cruel bureaucratic disorder does not discriminate, statistics have shown that senior citizens, young dependents, and those woefully underemployed are most at risk."

Man Succumbs To 7-Year Battle With Health Insurance

highlight the fucking criminal system that is our current health system.

Did you click the link Samson-?

i guess i didn't read very closely either.

me = idiot

oy...

All the shit out there, and the onion decides this "story" is funny?

Its funny because its true lnm. Insurance companies really do kill people.

I've seen the onion run much darker stories.

Here's some dark Onion,

Kidnapped Boy Found Safe, Imagines Kidnapped Boy

sense of humor.
I still fail to see the humor in either.

take his healthcare speech and plop it right down in the middle of one of those free clinics meant for the third world, to make the corporate media cover it, he has no passion at all for this.

He's playin chess!

Or

what were we thinking when we had that tenth drink of Democratic Party Kool-Aid?

they're either

A. Not that smart

B. On the take

C. On the take

Republican hypocrites love them some tax payer funded socialized heath care....for themselves of course, not for you. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/02/gope...

...that would require that corporations give up control over media so that real journalism would once again be the standard. Absent that, the media aren't going to call shit on anyone on the right.

Never before have I felt a more desperate need for a responsible media! The media is afraid being accused of being one sided (not Fox which is an opinion network) so it assures that even the fringes get a chance to speak. Fine. But a responsible media has some obligation to expose lies and manipulations. Since everything is 24 hour a day nonstop they don't have the time or staff to do that, so they leave it to the generally uninformed public to make its own opinion. This gives an opening for the mind controllers to have their day....repeat lies until they become edible.

...media is the epitome of an oxymoron.

...operative word here.

...legal to respond to yourself? Multiple times?

sane...not so much, lol!

In response to last weeks polls that showed that a large percentage of Americans believed many of the lies that the Fascists have been telling or at the very least weren't sure someone on the TV said that it was because Obama has not done a good job of explaining what was in the bill. I almost threw the remote through the TV screen. It is not the fault of the president it is at least 95% the fault of the media. They have been telling the story of the healthcare bill as if the anti health care reform jackasses had ligitiment points and treated every lie as if true. I still blame most of the American public for falling for the lies but the media has bending over backwards and sideways and standing on their heads to give the Facists lies air play and ligitimancy. This has been the way the press has been operating for a very long time and it is time to stop.

affects the media's bottom line or they are complicit in the corporate takeover of our country. I believe it is that they are complicit.

you both said it! The media are complicit... no doubt about it!

Fine. I agree, but what can be done about? The press used to be the clarifying word. What's after that?

callin them out at every turn, signing petitions and boycotting advertisers.
Hit them in the wallet where it hurts them the most.

Help me folks, Help me, lets send RAZOR BLADES to the Repukulan party, Make signs to look like RAZOR BLADES with very strong promises to cheer them on as they SLIT their wrists. Even to offer proper instruction so they slash correctly.

Remember these despicable Fools are shouting down ridiculing people with serious and life time injuries while WE PAY for THEIR INSURANCE and allow them ACCESS to OUR MILITARY HOSPITALS.

So let the cry go out withe the chant Here is your RAZOR SLIT YOUR WRIST AND DIE isn't that the chant of the Queen WACKO Backman of MN.

Slit your Wrist Slit Your Wrist Slit your Wrist Slit Your Wrist

Insurance companies, drug companies, are some of their biggest advertisers. The news departments have, undoubtedly, been told by the corporate interests to lay off. Your news outlets are forever tied to the bottom line now. Congratulations.

Wouldn't that be something?

It would be a government takeover of everyone's favorite industry: health insurers. I don't think too many would shed tears for the demise of the healthcare profiteers.

Absolutely right, of course. But I think there's a subtext. The misinformation spreads because people distrust their government. People distrust their government because they recognize that politicians lie to their faces sometimes. At town halls, when faced with the facts of the bill as written, opponents and undecideds (with some rational basis) still worry that they are being lied to, that the bill will be changed without warning. I think Republicans may be pursuing -- purposefully or not -- a strategy of lying to weaken popular trust in the government. This redounds to their benefit when in the minority because Democrats reap more of the anger, and when in the majority because it gives them cover to dismantle government agencies and programs. It's despicable and calling them on it is not enough, they must also be punished at the polls and in these policy debates with loss of influence.

about lying for several years now. All the way back in 2000 was when the lie express really took hold and by 2003 it has been a furious storm of lies and more lies and no one except Racheal Maddow since 2003 ever told one of these people thatthey were wrong or lying. They just let they say anything they wanted and never utter a word about what a lie it was. Unless it is someone telling the truth and then they will call them a liar.
republicanism is a mental illness!

They've been lying to us? And here I've been thinking it was pretty cool Obama was running the country with robots, like Glen Beck said.

About time! They need to be called on it! So does the media! Any self respecting journalist will do what she suggest and continue to put out the facts and show the ones who are out there telling lie after lie and the put the so called journalist and the networks, papers who continue to just make stuff up! The people who follow the Glenn Becks and the Limbaughs they do't give a damn about you! They will continue to make there money at your exspense and go on about there business! Use your head people think for yourselves!

Jan is the representive of the 9th district in Illinois. I'm stuck with Roskam in the 14th district. He's just like all the other repugs with money who really don't care about those that don't have any. I hope Jan will run for the Senate. Buress is a disgrace to the state of Illinois.
