I even have one constituent -- you will not believe this, and I know you won't, it's true. Her sister died, this poor woman had no dentures. She wore her dead sister's teeth, which of course were uncomfortable and did not fit. Do you believe that in America that that's where we would be?

  • Fox Nation, the website maintained by the Fox News Channel, labeled Slaughter's comments "Summit Insanity."

Well, the rest of the civilized world has universal health care benefits, and they don't seem to have fallen into tyranny yet. But I suppose you would have been among those who would have made the same argument against Social Security in the '30s. Has the government taken everything you have got because we went for Social Security?

You reminded me of what Scrooge said when the people asked him for contributions to the poor. "Isn't that what we have poor houses for?" You, sir, are a schmuck.

A government that is big enough to give you everything you need is big enough to take everything you have? Where is the line drawn so-called truth seeker? Was government not quite big enough when Bush was pres, because it seems that they were fully capable and willing to take any rights away from anyone who stood in their way? Does providing basic health services to people push us over some invisible line that only the government as bad Right sees, and then down some unseen slippery slope? This is the kind of statement asserted as "common sense" fact which is totally meaningless.

The whole point of the discussion, if we could actually have one, is that people, especially elderly or disadvantaged people shouldn't have to take up a collection, or beg on the streets, or hold a bake sale just to have basic dental care. If we are a civilized society then people shouldn't have to expend every once of their energy just to survive and live without unnecessary pain.

I've read the constitution too, and I don't see anywhere that a right to predatory capitalism, or to drive a gas-guzzler, or to go shopping is proscribed, but I've heard all those things described as a right by conservatives. In the 19th century, government decided that growing food was too important to be left to the free market or the end result could be famine and starvation in bad years. There's that social engineering for you.

Maybe if we just declare ourselves a third world nation, then doctors with borders or another charity can provide dental fairs for all the people who can't get proper treatment. I hope that if Malkin or Beck ever has a toothache that their dentist refuses to treat them because they are subhuman assholes.

Doctors without borders serves the United States often. They need it the most. People in poorer countries take care of their own.

Of course not having millions of businessmen try and rip it apart to make it fit like a feather in their cap is not helping.

mother died quite young, and about an hour after she died (unexpectedly), as he sat in shock in the hospital, his Republican father, sister, and brother spent time debating where to go for dinner. A similar story has been told about the death of G.W. Bush's younger sister.

Some say Republicanism is a mental disease, I think (and this story was a factor in coming to this conclusion) that in particular they're a collection of people who are narcissistic and/or unusually selfish and/or egotistic and/or completely lacking in empathy, thus not necessarily mentally disturbed, but certain borderline if not completely sociopathic.

Most also have a pronounced authoritarian complex. So for the most part they're a group of irrational and more or less disturbed people who can't be reasoned with or treated like adults. They simply need to be contained, marginalized, their inhumane ideology revealed for what it is, and attacked--politically--on all fronts until they're put back in the can for a while (since this scourge of American democracy is unlikely to ever go completely away).

If the party, and corporations, are legally persons, can't we get commitment orders and have them treated for their disconnections with reality?
Back in my flea market days, I found an interesting streetside garbage pile, mined it for good discards, and found, among other items, a pair of false teeth. I put them on sale the following weekend, just for laughs, and got plenty.
Until an elderly rural customer arrived: smiled, sincerely and toothlessly, and paid the $5. I asked him if there might be a fitting problem, and he stated that they would fit better than the dentist he couldn't afford, and far better than no teeth.

As it is these vipers see all medical care for the poor and middle class as expendable, but dental care seems to be even more so. It was one of the things that Ahnold S. decided to cut from California Medicaid.

And despite my status as a person with a psychological disability, which is enough to get me Medicare, the one thing I don't have is dental care either. Haven't been to my dentist in years.

Sure, the constitution doesn't mention teeth per se, but it does have that pesky, dare I say "socialist" phrase, about one of the purposes of government is to promote the general welfare. I'm pretty sure the Repugli- "See You Next Tuesday"s' would favor tearing up the constitution's preamble and using a "clean piece of paper" to "start over," would limit our government's role to cutting taxes and growing the military. Glenn Beck refers to himself as a "sick, twisted freak." To thine ownself he is true.

Actually the phrase general welfare is found in what is called the Taxing and Spending clause, primarily giving Congress the ability to determine for itself what to raise and spend taxes on, regardless of the enumerated powers, which say nothing about being conclusive.

That's my understanding, if it's not expressly provided for, or expressly forbidden.

But until it's added under the amendment process it's more of a political question than one of rights.

Pandemics and epidemics is one such concern. And public health has always been under government concern. It was why the Romans built public baths.

However, if the legislature can express a legitimate governmental concern it would definitely fall under customs and usage (not mentioned in the Constitution). I think Article X has been traditionally, and perhaps deliberately misread:

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

Conservatives have often argued that limits the powers of Congress to the enumerated powers, because otherwise it defers to the states. However, you notice that it also defers to the people. Further Amendment IX says:

"The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people."

So the people are mentioned twice to the states once, one for rights and the others for powers. If the people decide to give further powers to Congress through the ballot box, that is an acceptable practice, within the limits of the tripartite system. And under Article VI and Amendment XIV, the states must obey.

I should also mention that when it comes to social spending if the Congress passes laws allowing it to do something that should be sufficient since Amendment X does not say they have to create an Amendment to fulfill this function.

Jefferson passed no amendment to allow him to finalize the Louisiana Purchase, although he doubted he had that power. No amendment was passed to allow for the Bank of the United State, for the judicial review of Congress, innocent until proven guilty, executive power or congressional oversight.

And in the case of social spending they didn't take the right away from the state, but joined forces. Although often once the state sees what the Federal government is doing, they dropped their own part for the sake of the State's budge, and basically give away that power.

I disagree with your interpretation of the Taxing clause. If it was as you said, why would they need the enumerated powers to raise armies, navy etc. Wouldn't all that be covered under the general defense section of the Taxing clause? IMO that section grants the power to tax and spend for the enumerated powers. I think there have been a USSC case or two that supports my view. But I can't find them at the moment. Which is why they use the Interstate commerce clause so much now.

The Constitution is designed to restrict the Fed gov. As can be seen in the Preamble to the Bill of Rights.

I just carved a voodoo doll of Malkin with frozen dog poop as the medium (wearing latex gloves of course). I'm now going to run it over with my truck. I did give it a nice set of teeth using white tic tacs.

At times I have had problems with Insurance companies here in Canada. Not health related thank god. But when I did I would be harrassing the head office to get my problem solved. It worked more often then not. I know if I lived in america these days I would be denied coverage for the good ol pre exsisting condition, I have a severe form of Celiac disease. I know I would be camping out to DEMAND a refund of all the money I may of paid in premiums. I don't understand why more ppl don't do that in america.
I am thankful everyday that I live in Canada and we have universal healthcare FOR EVERYONE.

...is how many of these right-wingers claim to be Christians, when anyone who's ever read the New Testament can see from the subtext of their typical rhetoric that these people have little or no true understanding of the principles advocated by Jesus of Nazareth.

It's not too hard to see that these people are exactly the sort Paul had in mind when he wrote this:

"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. What bothers me most, however is that people who should know better are forever capitualating to the demands of these twisted personalities. These are predatory people of the lie. Manipulators to their last breath, people untroubled by the promptings of conscience and imune from the moderating influences of conscience.

They should treated fairly, but never be accomodated to any degree, however small.

That is a sad story to be sure, but not a very good argument.
If someone pointed to a 115 year old woman living in a nursing home somewhere in the U.S. would that be a convincing argument that there was nothing wrong with our health care system? Probably not.

It's hard to not feel a deep antipathy toward republicans when I hear something like this. And it's not an aberration, it's business as usual for them. It's just the way they are.
