Rick Sanchez Calls Fox News Liars
By Heather Saturday Sep 19, 2009 12:00pm
CNN's Rick Sanchez to Fox News... You Lie!
SANCHEZ: And I welcome you back. I'm Rick Sanchez here in the world headquarters of CNN.
All right, there's something that I got to tell you now. If you watch this show every day, as I mentioned a while ago, you know that I usually don't suffer fools gladly, especially when it comes to the fools who perpetuate falsehoods.
Well, today, thousands of you flipped through the pages of "The Washington Post" only to come across a lie so bold and so upsetting that, frankly, I'm just not going to sit here in silence and allow my craft or my news operation to be unfairly maligned, because enough is enough.
And, yes, I'm talking to you, FOX News, you, who claim to be fair and balanced. At what, I wonder? You know, I don't know, but I have got a couple ideas.
FOX News (INAUDIBLE) color ad today. It asks: "How did ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, and CNN miss this?" They are referring to the picture there of the tea party protest in the nation's capital last Saturday.
They are saying that we missed this story. They are saying we did not cover this story. They are using a lie to try and divide people into camps. And, you know, Americans are starting to get tired of this.
Look at the bottom of the ad there, where it says, "We cover all the news."
Really? You do? What, we don't?
You know, that's an offense to myself and to my colleagues, who risk their lives for our viewers in Iraq and Afghanistan and around the world to bring the news. You're actually telling people that we didn't cover a rally on Washington. Really?
Rog, roll the tape.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
T.J. HOLMES, CNN ANCHOR: Tea party march and rally happening in Washington.
Our Paul Steinhauser is there with what appears to be a whole lot of friends gathering around you now.
PAUL STEINHAUSER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: And about two hours from now, they're going to march behind us down Pennsylvania Avenue to the U.S. Capitol, and that's where they will gather, at the west front of the Capitol.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
SANCHEZ: OK, what was that? Was that like made-up video? Am I crazy or did I just watch CNN's Paul Steinhauser covering the story?
You want more? Here's more.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Want to check in again with CNN's Kate Bolduan live at the Capitol.
KATE BOLDUAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, we came down because we heard that there were actually so many people still stuck on Pennsylvania Avenue here trying to make it, too. As you can see, the people are all still coming from Freedom Plaza.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
SANCHEZ: All right, that was CNN's Kate Bolduan. Here's another one.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: We're joined now by CNN Radio Capitol Hill correspondent Lisa Desjardins.
LISA DESJARDINS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: What do you think of Congressman Joe Wilson?
(CHEERING AND APPLAUSE)
DESJARDINS: See? So there are people here who very strongly support Congressman Wilson, Fredricka, and many of them are right here.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
SANCHEZ: I don't know. Call me crazy, but that sure looked like our CNN Radio's Lisa Desjardins.
One last one from our own Jim Spellman, who followed and covered 30 rallies, 30 rallies along the Tea Party Express route, from coast to coast the last couple of weeks. Here it is.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
HOLMES: CNN all platform Jim Spellman traveled with the Tea Party Express as it made its way across the country.
JIM SPELLMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: The bulk of the people that are there for low taxes, less government control, but there really is an element that's got these kind of outlandish conspiracy theories about death camps about this takeover, people comparing President Obama to Hitler. And it really is a sizable thread. It's not just a couple of people on the edges.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
SANCHEZ: All right, I want you to see more proof now. And this is really just an unbelievable coincidence that I want you to see.
You see that picture in the ad that they took out? OK, pay attention to that picture right there on the right. That's the ad that they took out saying we didn't cover the event. All right, now, keep an eye on that picture right there. You see the Canadian flag? That's on their ad. You see the Canadian flag right there at the bottom?
All right, let me show you this. You see the thing on the left now? That's our tower cam shot of the event that we used repeatedly throughout those shows.
Funny how you can say that we didn't cover an event by using that picture, that picture that looks an awful lot like our tower cam shot, doesn't it? And you used it in your ad saying we didn't cover the story.
By the way, if you want even more proof of our coverage, maybe you should just watch your own shows. Here's a good one maybe you should watch. There is a show on FOX News. It's called "The O'Reilly Factor." You heard of it?
Here's Bill O'Reilly doing a segment called "Reality Check."
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "THE O'REILLY FACTOR")
BILL O'REILLY, HOST, "THE O'REILLY FACTOR": CNN, as we mentioned, covered the anti-Obama protests, of course, but ran into a little trouble.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
SANCHEZ: CNN covered the event. There it is. This is Bill O'Reilly showing us covering a story you say we didn't cover. Let me give that to you again. That was Bill O'Reilly showing CNN's coverage of a story that FOX News says we didn't cover. Hmm. Can you see -- can you say reality checkmate?
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "THE O'REILLY FACTOR")
O'REILLY: CNN, as we mentioned, covered the anti-Obama protests, of course, but ran into a little trouble.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
SANCHEZ: Here's the fact. We did cover the event. What we didn't do is promote the event, just like when thousands marched on Washington to protest the war in Iraq, we covered it as well, probably less than we covered this event. But we didn't promote it.
Bottom line is, we do cover the news. And we did extensively cover this event. We didn't promote the event. That's not what real news organizations are supposed to do. We covered the event.
I would invite you to look into that distinction between those two words, promote and cover. Cover is kind of like a fair and balanced way of doing things. You get it? You might want to look into that.
It's about letting Americans make up their own minds. Let me cut to the chase. When thousands of Americans showed up at the nation's capital to protest big government, we covered it with four correspondents, two satellite trucks, multiple live interviews, lawmakers on the record, and conversations with attendees.
By the way, we put a call into FOX News for a comment, and we expect an apology. But we're still waiting.
Let me address the FOX News Network now perhaps the most current way that I can, by quoting somebody who recently used a very pithy phrase, two words. It's all I need: You lie.

This is just sickening. Faux will stop at nothing.
Good for Rick Sanchez for pointing this out. I hope he and others on all of these networks point it out in a big way.
I think they all should band together to take out full page ads pointing out Faux's lies. The headline should read "You Lie, Fox "News"".
I think they all should band together and sue Faux News and possibly the Washington Post for allowing that ad.
This just pisses me off like not much else.
What I'd really like to ask is why did CNN attempt to model themselves after Fake Noise until Fake Noise decided they would attempt to take out the competition?
Now CNN will hopefully go back to news coverage the way they used to before Ted Turner sold it to Time Warner.
As public entities, any defamation would have to be intentional.
But Faux Noise has the right to lie. By court order.
Keep in mind, that was in Florida.
I really hope the other networks band together and try to sue Faux in another state, if possible. At the very least, they need to band together and take out nationwide ads which out the Faux "News" network.
the following media companies filed briefs in support of Fox.
Belo Corporation, Cox Television, Inc., Gannett Co., Inc., Media General Operations, Inc., and Post-Newsweek Stations, Inc.
I would expect Fox to also bring the 'full faith and credit' clause to bear on any other suit.
As long as Roger Ailes is running Faux Noise, truth will suffer.
any of those channels have the temerity to claim that they report the news, they are more like post-game sports shows only highlighting a few games from the two or three sports americans like, then repeating it over, and over, and over again.
I saw this when he said it. I caught a glimpse of it before he said it. So I made sure I saw it.
What? Did anyone expect Faux Nooz to be actually accurate?
Good for You Rick. Thank you.
Mudshark, they're just not inaccurate; they obviously lied!
That's their M.O. Lie. Then, even if the lie is debunked, some people will still believe the lie and spread it.
Also, my great thanks to Heather and Rick Sanchez as well....I'll send him a thank you email tomorrow... time for bed; I'm about ready to fall asleep!
Honest.
fox news was started by a republican. Every thing about it was word smithed by frank luntz to find out what words could be used to get the moron republican base to hear and hold onto that word. Then they advertized their words over and over and over and still say it over and over, I would bet at least 100 times a day.
The one thing I have learned in my 58 years is if a man has to tell you he is honest you can bet he is not honest! fox says repeats over and over they are fair and balanced! That says it all. They might as well have the word lie printed across the screen.
I never met a republican that would not lie to suit whatever need he might have. It doesn't matter if the lie causes someones death or a whole countries death as long as he gets what he wants out of it that is OK!
republicanism is a mental illness!
So in the end Sanchez and CNN replay footage of the nonevent, doing very little other than keeping this nonsense in the newscycle longer. Fox noise continues to set the agenda and the rest of the MSM can their chance to act indignant and jump as high as they can.
Cynicism just keeps making News corp richer but at least Sanchez got to act for a few minutes that her had a pair.
is nothing else than the official Republican party public relations promoter. Nothing to get excited about.
They will promote news. Reporting? Fair? Balance? Ha ha ha!
CNN is running a small spot hitting back. The ending line, FOX News Distorting, not Reporting. Every one needs to hit back. I think they may have started a fight/lie that they're going to lose.
Covering Fox 'News' and their lies and slander? That's real reporting. No slant. Nicely done, one person on CNN. Can you get the rest of your network to do the same?
I find it hilarious that these talking heads chase this nonsense like little puppies. The right wind noise machine atriculates exactly what there intentions are and what the are doing by accusing the other side of their own actions. And the media debate it........I laugh my ass off every time I see it. FOCKS news does it without any subterfuge at all.
The American news media is the best sitcom on TV.
My, that was refreshing. I'm really liking Rick Sanchez these days.
Rick saying "You lie" at the end of the clip = perfect!
I do not watch CNN because they support racist Lou Dobbs. They are no better than Fox Noise.
I agree that Dobbs is worthless but CNN is nowhere near what fox is.
I concur....CNN is nowhere near what faux is.
I quit watching about 6 or 8 months ago because it was starting to look a lot like fox lite to me too. Not as bad but a whole lot closer than it use to be. I'll have to tune in again for a while. I occasionally give fox another shot too but 5 minutes is pretty much my record over the past several years. The sad part is Fox news ratings are boffo lately.
I predicted that would happen. The good little authoritarians are following their leaders and circling the wagons. Fox will always do better with the opposition in control. They should be praying for it.
Frankly very little of it on any station is solution based. Conflict drives the ratings. To paraphrase something somebody else wrote on this thread..Cable News, the best soap opera on television.
When CNN had the termerity to provide a soapbox pulpit for Cheney, it dropped off my list. I used to watch CNNEspañol, but no more. They are all different versions of FauxSnooze.
The reason Fox is saying that no one else covered the protest in their ads was to foster paranoia about the filthy liberal bias from the filthy liberal media. And the last time Fox did this Bill ORLY apologized in his own demeaning, denigrating way (as they say in third grade 'my bad').
You need to let the fox listeners know that their very popular station makes it the mainstream media by definition. Then it is always nice to point out the surveys that prove that fox newsers live in a completely different reality than the rest of the world.
It's why the Sanchez thing will not do anything for foxers if that is the intent.
Their tv never comes off the ol fox nation.
Fox will simply ignore this. They know what Churchill said so well decades ago, something about a lie going halfway around the world before the truth has time to put its pants on.
Fox is merely the worst symptom of a larger disorder, a vast excess of broadcast news hours and personnel, who manufacture controversy, spin and deception on a daily basis for consumption by a captive, unthinking citizenry.
Faux only has an audience of about 1 percent of this country, 2 or 3 million. Most people watch the other networks which are more center left. It helps to keep things in perspective.
Actually billo has been over 4 millon total a time or two lately. Thats a pretty decent number, still your # 10 show is around 13 million. Beyond that ratings are great for making money and not much else. It certainly is not a symbol of much valuable beyond that. After all the top rated show is American Idol with well over 20 million. You draw your own conclusions. Your point is well taken though and quite accurate.
of late. While I don't always agree with his slant (he's pretty much an old guard RW Miami guy), he has come out in favor of, for example, loosening some Cuban/US restrictions. And he is pretty good about prefacing his opinions, when he gives them, with words stating that they are his opinions. So props to him for these comments about Fux.
How long will his corporate masters allow such language? My guess is only as long as his ratings improve in his time slot.
... it won't matter to the Faux News wingnuts who watch Faux. Nobody with a IQ above their shoe size have the stomach to watch it. So Sanchez is preaching to the choir.
But... I don't understand why all the networks don't call out Faux... an honor among thieves?
All he's doing is reportting the news without screaming in hysterics about how horrible Obama is.
What everyone is missing here, is that the Teabaggers 'Event' was staged. It was a Corporate staged event, Fox 'News' was in concert.
A video clip on CSPAN describing the 'Event' was a slick production complete with music track.
Corporate propaganda par excellence. But it was not news.
Video was shown of one of the organizers wherein she described the over 450 buses used to bring the 'protestors' to Washington.
That much was news, documentation of a staged event.
A real journalist would have asked, who paid for those 450 buses, where did they come from, who are the organizers and what is their interest.
Because we were witnessing:
THE STAGING OF A NATIONAL HOAX.
Not much later reports went out describing fantastic numbers of one million even two million people in attendance.
More credible numbers now are in the 50,000 to 70,000 range.
Pictures from other events showing huge crowds of these greater fabricated numbers were used as if they from the contemporary 'Event' when they were not. None of this is mentioned by Sanchez.
The great irony is that Fox 'News' accuses CNN 'News' of not covering this bogus event.
Fox did this in a color full page WaPo advertisement, which was itself a publicity stunt.
The irony continues when CNN 'News' responds that they DID cover the event. Rick Sanchez in his 'umbrage' points out correctly that there is difference between 'covering' an event, presumably he means what CNN was doing, and 'sponsoring' and event, presumably what Fox was doing.
But he fails miserably as a journalist. Because:
In an era of responsible journalism, he would have linked Fox to the action of sponsoring a staged event and then presenting it as news.
In other words, being complicit in a hoax. As in FRAUD.
He would have known that the WaPo ad was itself a publicity stunt.
Instead he DEFENDS CNN's honor by linking them to the same FRAUD.
That is: covering a STAGED EVENT, a Publicity Stunt, AS IF IT IS NEWS.
In the 1920s when the Corporations began publicity stunts such as these, as if they were news, the journalists of the time refused to cover them.
Today the Corporate Media ITSELF, is a publicity stunt , one fraud after another.
Which is why I never watch them and wouldn't believe anything they said if I did.
Any of them, they are only different by degree.
It is all about creating an echo chamber for their hoaxes.
So fox isn't a news channel.Big surprise. Their viewers don't care. They are in it for the drama. WWE could have shows on that network and no one watching would bat an eye.
And you are right. Since it has seemed to work so well for them the other ones are playing variations of the same game.
Wouldn't it be nice to have shows with people on who had ideas about ways we can solve the problems that beset us?...Nobody'd watch?.....Nevermind.
...........just like the staged bra-burning event in Chicago (OH! Chicago) silly me, I get it now. Those savey 'Chicago Pols' ya, sure! It was a totally staged event, covered as 'nooooooze' hokey, hokey, hokey!!
Did faux cover the massive demonstrations against the war during the Iraq war buildup, or just make it sound like a lunatic fringe?
Did faux cover the Nataline Sarkisyan story and all the demonstrations it caused?
Did faux cover the story that now 74% of physicians back public option?
I'd love to see the commercial for the last one. Indubitably it would be prefaced with, "3 out of 4 doctors agree..."
And I don't know about CNN, but local news was covering the "demonstration," but no one but faux seemed to be sending out reporters to cover it, probably because technically the whole demonstrations are essentially faux publicity stunts.
Actually, come to think of it, newsrooms are getting smaller and smaller in papers and TV as they become more and more dependent on wire services and talking heads.
that really is priceless, using CNN's own coverage in an ad saying CNN didn't cover it.
Cover vs promote. Now that's it exactly. Fox hasn't had journalists for quite some time but they're not even trying to pretend anymore.
Ohhh Snap!
When did news become covering other channel's coverage? wtf? There aren't enough real things to talk about? I want them all to just shut up sometimes. They sound like quarrelling 6 year olds. What happened to intelligence and integrity?
I think the Patriot Act outlawed those.
To their discredit, CNN covered the event as well.
distort, mislead, propagandize, incite, rabble-rouse, harangue, bully, and otherwise piss and puke all over anyone who doesn't completely embrace their distorted worldview.
Fox is our species' contemporary opiate for the masses, designed to give form and voice to the Angry Group's inchoate resentments and prejudices. To say that Fox foments hate is a gross (and careless) understatement. Fox and their sycophants are hate mongers of the highest order, and their divisiveness is intended both to silence anyone who disagrees with their worldview or their tactics, and to embolden all those who are willing to carry their water.
Here in Texas, people who used to be low-key, non-confrontational conservatives are getting their hate on in new and scary ways: on the freeways, in malls, in supermarkets, in schools, by the water coolers, and in any other venues where they now feel they can legitimately voice their anger. They are getting proud, and getting loud.
The latest example? Our superintendent blocked the broadcast of Obama's address on education--alleging that 'too many parents had protested and were threatening to keep their children home'--then he joked around about the controversy 'giving him a migraine.' But, no one saw any of the 'emails, notes, letters, etc.' wherein these oh-so-numerous parents voiced their concerns. Then, the very next day, teachers were told that the Board had themselves watched and rated the address, and the Board felt that teachers could broadcast the address if they 'thought it would be relevant to their students' education'! Most teachers understood that this was code for 'we'll soon see how many of you are foolish enough to think Obama's address is educational...'
The Angry Group feels their anger is legitimate and justified. The Angry Group thinks that their guns and ammunition are reasonable responses when they feel threatened. Now, even more, Fox is making damned SURE that the Angry Group feels threatened.
Of course Fox lies. Fox lies every time their microphones and cameras go live. Were it not for lies Republicans would have nothing to say and Fox is the unofficial PR organ of the RNC.
What IS news is that the rest of the media just found out about Fox lies and even bigger news - they've said that Fox lies. That's kind of like a doctor testifying against another doctor - it just isn't done.
Right on Sanchez.
Touche' to Rick but zoom out for a moment. By replaying all the footage and mentioning Fox shows by name, wasn't this CNN taking the bait? FOX must love this.
They had their ass handed to them and they don't have a defense.
Fox may have really stepped in it now. First the 2 million people lie and now this. The deal is, with this lie is it is so provable that it is a flat out lie that they are going to lose a lot of credibility with a lot of the jokers who still watch them. Granted, they are not going to lose the main Beck watching base but anybody who is/was on the fence are not going to be on the fence any more. It is one thing to just say "Fair and Balanced" and another to say the these news outlets did not cover this event as the people are watching the event being covered by these news outlets. MMMM, maybe Fox is the lying bullshit channel that everybody is saying they are."
That was the ass kicking FOX deserved.
or maybe because I'm on my fourth glass of Chardonnay, but I remember it was one of those whacked out fuckheads at fox who declared a "culture war" and, when I hear "war", I think pummel, stomp, grind and spit out raw. Sanchez gets it. So many others don't. You don't write the treaty until you win the war and there is no high road to take while someone is trying to kick you in the teeth -- you kick them back harder and win. Go, Rick!
All that, and nowhere was the term 'propaganda' used. Come on, Rick. You know that's what Fox Noise is -- propaganda. Your organization probably knows quite a bit more about Fox than you're willing to tell us. Why is that? You want to keep the 'moral high ground'? This country needs you guys more than ever now. We have brownshirts running through the streets. And all you can do is say "You Lie"? Give me a break. Take the damn gloves off, before this all gets out of hand.
Fox News shits hypocrisy. Fox doesn’t broadcast President Obama’s addresses to the nation let alone air his rallies and town halls during the week
olberman without the dramatics. way a go Rick. easy to listen to and understand.
I'm glad Sanchez called out Fox on their lies but I wouldn't be so eager to pile praise on to CNN. In fact Fox serves a purpose for places like CNN and The NY Times. Fox sets the bar for the extreme right of the news spectrum so far to the right that places like CNN seem balanced. In fact CNN is very biased toward the republicans and I think in some ways more harmful than Fox. Virtually everyone knows that Fox is propaganda but treating CNN as objective defines the "reasonable" spectrum of debate to exclude a true left wing point of view. CNN promoted WMD's as strongly as anyone, they promoted the gulf war as if were the latest video game or action movie. They treat generals and ex-generals as objective experts without an axe to grind but almost never interview anyone from the peace movement, the almost never pay attention to what Chomsky calls the "unworthy victims". So good for Rick Sanchez but CNN still sucks.
I approve of his calling them out, but why is there only outrage over lies about CNN? What about all the other lies Fox spews on a regular basis?
I miss the Ted Turner days of CNN. It's so useless now. And their website's link to Christiane Amanpour's Q&A about Iran -- CNN website headline is that Amanpour says Obama is confused about Iran, but if you read what she says, she said that everyone is -- that the election outcome and controversy has thrown off the Obama administration's plan to open a dialog and that everyone is trying to figure out what to do with them -- NOT that Obama is an idiot. Nice try Faux-Fox.
Hey Rick
Speaking of liars. Why don't you go out and booze it up again, jump in your car, and kill another poor drunk walking across the street like you did in Florida? Your nothing but scum. Your lucky your still on that brown nosing CNN. Have another drink you piece of garbage.
