By not allowing ALL forms of social discourse to at least be discussed we can never allow our country to become better. Ours was the first flexible form of government. Our forefathers intended it to change and grow dynamically as the times and pressure changed. They knew this was necessary as our country was founded on immigration they must have known that our cultural landscape would change as each new culture added it's heritage to our own. This is a fallacy that I see in the conservative culture; that new cultures are not additive, that they are somehow 'detracting' from our American Heritage.

Murrow's insight with regards to McCarthy and desire to provide an actual Fair and Balanced commentary is so noble it actually pains me a bit to think about modern journalism.
One problem is that a number of conservatives are going to see themselves as the watchdogs for the corruption in government. And if that were all that they were doing I would actually approve of their actions. However, where were they 2 years ago? 4 years ago? 6 years ago? Mighty convenient that the only time they care about corruption is when a (moderate) progressive is in the White House.

Yes, we survived, but at a price. Many actors, writers, directors, and other artists and businesspeople were blacklisted and couldn't get work. People killed themselves out of despair. The concomitant social pressures out among the population were overwhelmingly powerful. This gave rise to many thousands of women and men who couldn't handle these pressures to abuse drugs and alcohol.
I came in on the tail end of this and clearly remember the very strong pressures in elementary school and in my home town to conform even in details such as the way you dressed, the length of girls' skirts or whether a grown woman could wear trousers or how a girl or woman could style her hair. It was very powerful and intense, and quite frightening.

i have known since the day i saw them that this is the reason the right cannot stand the fairness doctrine.
