During the debate over the continuing resolution that the House passed today, Rep. Marcy Kaptur asked when we're going to get some of that shared sacrifice from Wall Street and the oil company executives instead of balancing the budget off of the backs of the working class.
Here's more from TPM with the latest on the CR -- House Passes Stopgap Spending Measure:
The House of Representatives just passed stopgap legislation to prevent the government from shutting down when funds expire on Friday by vote of 271-158.
The spending measure, known as a "continuing resolution," will keep the federal lights on for three weeks, while congressional leaders and the White House hammer out a compromise package that can pass both the House and the Senate. This continuing resolution lost nearly 70 votes compared to the last stopgap, and could not have passed without Democratic support.
House conservatives staged a mini-rebellion over the CR, which they say doesn't sufficiently slash discretionary spending, and doesn't contain key Republican policy measures -- including abortion restrictions and a rescission of funds to implement the health care law.
Overall, 54 Republicans broke ranks with GOP leadership and voted against the measure. A total of 85 Democrats voted for the measure. It is expected to pass the Senate late this week.

Why bother? They will charge us more at the pump. Profit first.
Why bother? What a stupid comment. Go back and hide in your cave.
If the republicans are splitting that sounds like good news to me.
Good for Ms Kaptor for asking the most obvious question that never gets a decent answer.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

"When Are We Going to Ask Wall Street and the Oil Companies to Pay Their Share in Taxes?"
As far as "fair share" goes Wall Street and the Oil/energy Companies think they should pay less - even if they are already not paying a dime.
As long as our politicians are bought and paid for by these same companies nothing will change - well nothing will change for the better.

Corporation: MOAR SUBSIDIES FOR US. NONE FOR 'THEM'
Fixit: When are we going to TELL Wall St and Big Oil that they WILL pay their share of taxes? Asking just don't work. Only when these parasites get their scrotums squeezed in a vise will they pony up. In fact I propose that every one of them be fitted with remote controlled visegrips on their nutsack in addition to an ankle bracelet.
In December Republicans threatened to shut down the government, unless the Bush tax cuts for billionaires was extended..
Now again we're faced with threats of a shutdown -- if benefits for Social Security and Medicare aren't cut.
Billions in tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy, while cutting off benefits for starving seniors.
PLEASE...may there be a special place in Hell for these pukes!!

Wall St. & Oil Co.s are paying their "fair share". All other "taxpayers" are paying more than their "fair share".
Roll back
-Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy
-Reagan's tax cuts for the wealthy (return his tax increases on the middle class)
-JFK's tax cuts for the wealthy

Zero is not a "fair share" when they're making Billions.
ExxonMobil paid no federal income tax in 2009. (Updated)
Last week, Forbes magazine published what the top U.S. corporations paid in taxes last year. “Most egregious,” Forbes notes, is General Electric, which “generated $10.3 billion in pretax income, but ended up owing nothing to Uncle Sam. In fact, it recorded a tax benefit of $1.1 billion.” Big Oil giant Exxon Mobil, which last year reported a record $45.2 billion profit, paid the most taxes of any corporation, but none of it went to the IRS:
Exxon tries to limit the tax pain with the help of 20 wholly owned subsidiaries domiciled in the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands that (legally) shelter the cash flow from operations in the likes of Angola, Azerbaijan and Abu Dhabi. No wonder that of $15 billion in income taxes last year, Exxon paid none of it to Uncle Sam, and has tens of billions in earnings permanently reinvested overseas.
Mother Jones’ Adam Weinstein notes that, despite benefiting from corporate welfare in the U.S., Exxon complains about paying high taxes, claiming that it threatens energy innovation research. Pat Garofalo at the Wonk Room notes that big corporations’ tax shelter practices similar to Exxon’s shift a $100 billion annual tax burden onto U.S. taxpayers. In fact, in 2008, the Government Accountability Office found that “two out of every three United States corporations paid no federal income taxes from 1998 through 2005.”
Update Forbes has updated its article to include a statement from Exxon: "Though Exxon's financial statement's don't show any net income tax liability owed to Uncle Sam, a company spokesman insists that once its final tax bill is figured, Exxon will owe a 'substantial 2009 tax liability.' How substantial? 'That's not something we're required to disclose, nor do we.'"
Wall Street, oil companies, major corporations, millionaires, they all have to start paying taxes, because America can't run without tax - anyone that says it can is either stupid or wilfully ignorant.
At the same time we have to end wasteful spending on war, occupations, prescription drugs and private health insurance.

We aren't. Especially as long as we have to rely on their wholly-owned subsidiary to do something about it.

In my contact with working class folks I continue to be amazed how many have completely bought and are still buying the GOP line channeled through FoxNews propaganda and various business channels that unless taxes are cut further for the rich, they will move more jobs to....???? wherever, but not here! These are wonderful people but they are scared senseless that they won't be able to feed and house their families. They are desperate and starting to fight for any hope of a "trickle down" crum or low paying job they can find.
It is unfortunate, but stupidity comes with a price.
Fact; corporations pay no taxes (most of them), they are sitting on the biggest pile of money and wealth ever, yet we have the worst job market since the first republican Great depression.
Just how does any of that logically support tax cuts for the rich and their corporations in order to create jobs?
How long will it be before these fools believe their lying eyes?
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
If the dumb fucks have not figured it out by now , after these last 10 or 11 years , they are hopeless cases and the bad part is that they are going to take the rest of us down with them . Anyone seen a leader from the Democratic party lately ? Glad they're putting up such a fight defending the American people against the fascist take over ! How about that Obama , defending the American workers , the unions and traditional Democratic values ! Yes sirrreeeee , we are
in good handsscrewed ! Totally screwed !Insanity , it is what it is , there is no understanding it .
They already moved the jobs. They have little to nothing on us now - they went too far.
As for millionaire income tax - they would have to move their bodies out of America to evade them, and i'm all for that anyway - good riddance. They are greedy, and there are plenty of clever people to take their palce in America.
When it comes to corporate tax, and moving jobs - we also need tariffs on imports. Other regulations too.
There are all kinds of regulations that used to regulate capitalism because capitalism is not stable without those regulations.
We already knew that , and now the republicans have proved it to us.
Get over it republicans - you failed us. We need the regulations back and we need to pay taxes - get over it.

Even in the face of overwhelming support, my beloved Democrats always play "nice" with the right. How about some LBJ ass style kicking on those Republican chumps for a change?
The United States aspires to democracy, but no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power.
That's a trillion-dollar question.
far left loon >.<
Nothing will change until a unified people wise up and rise up but given the rocket scientists in this country that make up half of more of the electorate there's about zero chance of that happening . .And our fearless leader ? Roosevelt Jr. ? The Democratic party ? Either they are scared shitless and are afraid to speak out and fight them or they are in with them , I'm not even sure which it is .
Insanity , it is what it is , there is no understanding it .
I'm not even sure which it is
I think it's a mixed bag. We have a lot of work to do, but we can return sanity and regulation and taxes and rule of law for all, given that the spirit of Wisconsin spreads to all the middle class.

too smart-too tough and too reasonable-to ever become President.
To become president you need to be "hot" if a woman. You need to have that sociopathic "charm" and be willing to "go along" with the "status quo."
She would be wonderful-she would bring hope and direction.
That's not what Fox Lies America wants. They'd chew her up and spit her out.
Wall Street, oil companies, OR the richest Americans to pay their share. The burden is on the middle/working class who are being decimated by 30 years of Reaganomics.
Taxing "Wall Street" and "the oil companies" is not sensible. Large corporate taxes will simply be an additional tax on the shareholders of those companies. As a small shareholder whose retirement income, small as it is, will be eaten up by those additional taxes, let me suggest that the across the board corporate tax is just another regressive tax which is as likely to damage the middle class as anyone else. We need to keep on track with progressive taxation, where the truly wealthy who have the enormous benefit from investments bear their fair share of the burden.
Candideinnc
I agree, argued the same at thinkprogress in economic speak and was shouted down.
People confuse corporations for actual persons. The taxation always hits those who get the money from the corporate account; employees and shareholders.
A proper income taxation (which treats all forms of income the same and has no loopholes) is the answer.
Such a income tax could even go back to the good old times (50's) tax rates when America was still the nice perfect world where women were obedient, neighbourhoods segregated, workers weren't poor and white old gentlemen ruled the world. ;-)
You don't ask them to pay their fair share, you order them to do it, on pain of prosecution, fines and imprisonment. Asking implies that giving the answer "no" is acceptable.
Right now Marcy. Let's start a movement and make them!!! We can't rely on the fearful democrats, we need to do this ourselves. PAY UP DEADBEATS!!!
Rep. Kaptur sounds like a real Democrat, unlike the Democratic imposters we now have in so many elected offices. She needs to ask her very appropriate questions to the Imposter-in-Chief Obama as well as the GOP.
And based on her little speech she has my vote for president.
