Rachel Maddow: Words Matter
Rachel reminds our politicians that words matter, actions have consequences and when politicians use over-heated rhetoric like they have been over the past year, the results can be tragic from the environment they help to create. Sadly I'm sure this is falling on deaf ears. Michele Bachmann and Steve King are not going to quit terrorizing Americans any more than Glenn Beck is.
Maddow: Back in 1995 on the morning of the Oklahoma City bombing, just after the explosion a member of Congress named Steve Stockman (R-TX) was sent a fax touting the bombing. He was sent that fax by somebody in the militia movement. Mr. Stockman later turned that fax over to the FBI. He was never implicated in any way in the bombing itself. But there is a reason that the militia movement trusted a member of Congress enough to go to him with that.
Mr. Stockman had for example written an article in Guns and Ammo Magazine proclaiming that what happened at Waco was a government conspiracy to “prove the need for a ban on so called assault weapons”. Mr. Stockman peddled conspiracies that he got from the militia movement about the government planning a takeover, the government planning attacks, paramilitary attacks on American citizens. This sound at all familiar?
Helen Chenoweth was a Republican member of Congress from Idaho at the time. Helen Chenoweth was famous for convening hearings about her fantasies of Communism in the government and government over-reach. A gentleman named Sam Sherwood of the United States Militia Association bragged of providing the volunteers that got Helen Chenoweth elected to Congress. Mr. Sherwood was invited to testify at Chenoweth’s hearing, despite the fact that Mr. Sherwood had been quoted saying “Go up and look legislators in the face because some day you may be forced to blow it off.”
Helen Chenoweth and Steve Stockman, both members of Congress, neither of them obviously bombed that Federal building in Oklahoma City. They did not do what Timothy McVeigh did. But what they did in politics back in the early and mid-nineties helped create and nurture the environment that led to what happened on April 19th, 1995 on Oklahoma City. Timothy McVeigh emerged from a movement that was promoted and nurtured and encouraged by a lot of things, but among those things were some radical members of Congress.

...elect to congress are not just politicians, they are leaders. unfortunately people can be herded just like sheep. if the well they are led to is full of insanity, fear, and violence a lot of them will drink it anyway. i know talking about nazi's is cliche but it is important to remember they didn't climb out of a whole in the ground after they were spawned by satan, they were led there through propaganda and politicians. everyone on the planet needs to remember that and realize there is no natural force that will just inherently keep it from happening again.
..he doesn't drink it because he's thirsty. He drinks it because he doesn't know the difference. Someone in a movie said that but I can't remember the movie right now. I thought the metaphor apt relative to your post.

That is one of my favorite movies because of one scene. The one where someone throws a peanut by the guys face and his take and the look on his face makes me laugh every time.

From the American President:
Lewis Rothschild: You have a deeper love of this country than any man I've ever known. And I want to know what it says to you that in the past seven weeks, 59% of Americans have begun to question your patriotism.
President Andrew Shepherd: Look, if the people want to listen to-...
Lewis Rothschild: They don't have a choice! Bob Rumson is the only one doing the talking! People want leadership, Mr. President, and in the absence of genuine leadership, they'll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership. They're so thirsty for it they'll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there's no water, they'll drink the sand.
President Andrew Shepherd: Lewis, we've had presidents who were beloved, who couldn't find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flashlight. People don't drink the sand because they're thirsty. They drink the sand because they don't know the difference.
Mickey: "It was an epiphany. Do you know what an epipany is?"

That is from Michael Douglas in "The American President":

American President was the movie. Mike Douglas as President Andrew Shepard speaking the MJ Fox.
After reading this the first question that came to me was, why do crazy people keep getting elected? As long as we have a certain part of the population who continues to elect crazy people, we will always have times like 1995 and today.
I just saw Craig Crawford on CNN. He said there had always been some crazy things and times and I got the feeling he was just blowing this off now as one more.
Until leaders from both parties come out and appear together seriously asking that the violence come to an end, I'm afraid that it won't. Each time I hear a republican mention it, they seem to toss in a caveat about the attitude of the country or the politics of the time. I don't hear any real concern for what is happening from them.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

...are prone to think how their parents thought so the cycle tends to reinforce itself. what people are used to is what they are most comfortable with. they are also more comfortable with things they understand and are prone to be apathetic or flat out against things they don't. in recent years republicans have kept their messages simple so people think they understand what's going on and are more comfortable. that's why people like clinton and obama are hated for elitism or oratory prowess, big words make small people feel slighted so there is a tendency of animosity already there. some politicians capitalize on this for personal gain. greed will always be there. if we can fix campaign financing some of that motive will disappear. if we can get people educated then people trying to capitalize on simplicity, animosity, and fear will have a harder time pulling it off. it's going to be pretty tough as the msm seems to be greedy too. i kind of think things are going to get worse before they can get better.

Because people like Tom Delay (Texas Republicans) and Illinois Democrats keep gerrymandering districts to give safe districts with whackos in them.
Make redistricting done by non-partisans or even computers, and you won't have these whackos.
The time to do it is now, before the census results come out and everyone knows who will have the advantages.

Republican leaders opted for a strategy that fed this craziness. They cannot turn it off without first recognizing among themselves that their strategy was both morally and politically wrong, and then only with the risk than attempting to turn it off risks it turning it back on themselves.
Democrats who are serious about this being a problem need to recognize this and approach Republicans with that understanding.

..under a microscope this past year, it would seem as if the right hasn't the intellectual or moral capacity to act in any way like an adult should. Makes me wonder how they can look themselves in the mirror and claim to be "human beings" let alone adults.

Why would anyone be firing at Cantor's office? I mean who is pissed at him and for what? Does he have his office in an area where people hunt? Is it in an area where people get liquored up and start shooting guns? Has he had any threatening phone calls lately like the dem representatives have?
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
..who did it as long as that individual is put in jail for domestic terrorism.

I think it does matter. I think in every one of these cases it matters who did it and why. Innocent until proven guilty matters too.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
According to the Richmond police, it wasn’t intentional. It wasn’t an act of terrorism. It didn’t hit Cantor’s office. It hit a window in a building where Cantor also has an office. The bullet broke the window pane but fell to the floor because it didn’t have enough velocity to break the blinds. It struck with a downward motion. A shot like that can’t be aimed.
Of course Cantor will use this happenstance as evidence of attack of the Libruls. It’s expected.
same assassin who tried to take out Lou Dobbs from such a distance that the spent bullet fell to the ground after hitting the siding on the third floor of his house.

To me, hearing cantor's story for the first time brought out my inner church lady as I thought, how convenient.
Now cantor is saying he too got threats but he won't release them because he doesn't want to "fan the flames". I'm betting if he has threats they are not recent or maybe like the bullet, the reality tells a different story.

I think it needs to be said that there is a hierarchy of sorts on both sides of the spectrum.
There are the knowledgeable people. There are the voters. There are people such as, say, the ACLU, the NCSE, the Log Cabins, and those who approach political and national issues with some amount of sense. They have considered opinions and discuss the nuances of a situation.
Then there are the Tea Partiers and the PeTA idiots who froth at the mouth and act like utter idiots.
The right has a somewhat more malignant cancer than the left's got, but both are fairly malignant.
Don't listen to people on either side who can't argue with some amount of nuance.

Just watched the documentary (1997) about Waco for the first time last night. The ATF wanted a big event to justify their new budget request. They screwed it up so bad the FBI took over, and the FBI was going to revenge the killing of the ATF agents that stormed the compound. These were a bunch of wild west pseudo military thugs that brutally killed the men, women and children in that compound. I'll bet some of them later went to work for Blackwater or some other private mercenary group.
Point is the inflamers can't seem to see that this kind of stuff comes from the right-wing paramilitary types and is a result of government units that answer to nobody and collude with large corporations (Bechtel, Halliburton, etc). And then they rant about an elected government planning attacks on its citizens when a shadow government has been doing it for years.
Then again, they hate government but are willing to advocate violence to get back in power so they can control government. And then make government a turdpile so they can demonize government. I need a drink.
Right wing domestic Christanic terrorism. Lovely.

just watch, once something bad does happen (I would hope not but sooner or later some nut is going to listen to these assholes) you will see all of the same people who say "they have a right to be angry" and "I want you armed and dangerous" etc, etc, they will all say "I had no way of preventing this horrible act" like they didn't have anything to do with it at all. - I can't believe anyone with a brain is a republican, how can you look at this kind of behaviour and say "that's my party!" - it just doesn't make sense.
Please conserv's - Think for yourselves, you nation depends on it.
They would not get away or off so easy.
But I think all of these things just go to prove what I have been saying for quite a while now.
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness they have killed the economy and god only knows how many people.
God damn the GOP!
Is it just me or are the dems-the ones who could be rightfully outraged, the only people talking sensibly and trying to downplay this? Yet they are accused of causing this as much as the republicans.
