The Rachel Maddow Show: McCain Put Campaign Over Country With Palin Pick for VP
Rachel Maddow whacks the McCain campaign for putting clueless Sarah Palin and recent Fox News hire one step away from being President of the United States when they already knew that she wasn't qualified. While I have no desire to push Heilemann and Halperin's gossip rag of a book, the news that Steve Schmidt and other campaign staffers of McCain's weren't happy with Palin is nothing new and probably credible. And anyone with half a brain didn't need inside the beltway campaign gossip to see that their assertions were right and that Sister Sarah had no business being one bad heartbeat away from the Presidency and McCain should have known better than to select her.
As Rachel notes, no one gets to vote for the Vice Presidential candidate and it shows how much that person cares about the country with their selection, and McCain put his campaign before country as much as he might not like being called out for it now. He got pretty nasty with Matt Lauer for daring to ask him about the book. I'd hate to see how would act if anyone actually really got confrontational with him about it.

I think it would be quite a hoot, personally. I'd love to see McCain try to equate picking Sarah Palin with doing what's best for the country.
BTW, it's funny when Republicans call Biden gaff prone when Palin was their VP choice.
Hopefully humanity will one day learn to be humane.
I think Palin was picked because she wasn't gag-prone...

And yet she gags me whensoever she opens her moose eating pie hole.

McCain's campaign needed a game changer - so scrooo the country.

Sarah Palin and W were BOTH chosen by God? Hmmm - I'm beginning to think God doesn't love America that much after all.
Have you noticed how often 'God's Plan' involves the use of idiots on FOX who say, It was God's plan?"
Looks like God's plan was to have Obama elected, Sarah.
I guess the droolin'teabaggers can STFU now.
The next republican sh1tass to get the wingnut vote will be the guy who says, "I can make cheeseburgers in my mouth!"
Sarah Palin admits to questioning whether Saddam was behind 9/11.
So was Saddam responsible for 9/11? It's just a question not a statement. It's like "Does Barack have a real birth certificate?" - see just a question.

But McCain is facing a possible tough re-election campaign and can in no way be negative towards Sarah Palin.
I've seen some stuff, man. And some thangs...

where do these people come from, what do they read all day?
I'm to believe the then-mayor of Wasilla had enough brain cells to rub together and come up with ANY insight as to 9/11?
Oh, and if that was 'being confused,' then can we assume that Sarah does NOT support the War on Terror, whose hallmark is this quagmire we've got going in Iraq?
Mr. McCain's entire life has been filled with poor judgement both professional and personal. Why would his pick for VP be any different?
He really doesn't give a shit.
BINGO
Some interesting reading here.
Haven't you noticed?
... they're all politicians. It's the nature of the beast.
To be fair, they're not all bad. I'm quite happy with my rep, Henry Waxman.
OMG, did I just view actual reporting? Did a teevee newshead just compare what was said with what the reality was?

I have to excuse myself to go take a conservative movement right now.
Did he ever.
The Palin-McCain segment was just there to rile up our progressive agner at Repubs so we would be receptive to her segment showing Obama was more effective as President than our blog commentary would indicate.

When will it ever end? She's got her new show at Faux Opinion Channel now (which is so appropriate with the other rethuglican bobbleheads) so she'll be headline news 24/7 all over the news media outlets.
BTW, there's an old Hawaiian saying "Haole Eyes," that was applied to the early caucasian visitors to the islands, "which primarily and esoterically indicated a race that has no relation to one's own; an outsider, one who does not conform to the mores of the group; one that is void of the life element because of inattention to natural laws which make for the goodness in man. In its secondary meaning, haole ... implies a thief, a robber, one not to be trusted. ..." That's not being rogue, that's mental illness. I see this every time I look in her or any other conservative rethuglican eyes when they open their mouths.
"When will it ever end?"
Never, after Sarah we'll have to deal with Bristol and then her kids and so on and so on . .

I have been saying for a while now. That republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness and it is killing America!
Country?
I have not seen a republican in thirty years that gives a rats ass about anything then making a buck, or should I say stealing a buck.
There are plenty of things to be mad at Obama about.
But my god think about how much worse it would be if the republicans were in charge.
The whole GOP is such a mess because of their reason for existing in the first place! Greed!
Short on material Rachael ? This was a no brainer to begin with and is old news isn't it ? Also , since when do the Repugs , any of them , put country or the people first above their insane lust for power and control ?
"Trap"
She succumbed to the lure of fame and big money so there are going to be "limits" to her creative clout.
John McCain just summed up his attitude about questions regarding Sarah Palin, and in so doing, his attitude about America. While he is blunt, his attitude is actually representative of Republicans in general. They like things the way they are.
Look at the other choices.
Upchuckabee, Shit Onmy and the guy who's name sounds like Plantan.
Not exactly the Murderer's Row of politics.
"Anyone that makes less than $150K in this country, has no business voting Republican."
Originally the Vice President was the runnerup in the election of President by the Electoral College.
I don't know when exactly that practice ended, but today the parties choose their own VP candidate - not our "Founding Father's" original plan.
And consider the fact that the VP is supposed to cast the deciding vote in the event of a tie-vote in the Senate. That's in the Constitution. So filibusters are unconstitutional, otherwise this function of the VP is meaningless.
Democracy is too important to be entrusted to politicians.
Rise Up!
Protest!
That would be the 12th amendment 1804, after the election of 1800 had to be decided the old way.
But it was a tie so it had to go to the House of Representatives.
We could've ended up with a President Burr.
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
This should be the new slogan: Republicans, we don't know and we don't care!
at least McCain, in his usual impatience with things that "bother" him, was honest : he doesn't know and he doesn't care. Now, simply extrapolate that to the rest of the Republicans and PRESTO ! you have the truth ! They don't care ! Screw the people ! We're in this for ourselves and screw all of you for bothering us ! Ha Ha Ha. Stupid peons lackeys.
"We Don't Care....We Don't HAVE To"

We continue in Iraq and Afghanistan where our goals will never be accomplished, Our leadership redoubles their efforts in the face of certain failure, which is the definition of fanaticism. Out of control defense establishment, Fed~Treasury axis of evil pitching billions down banking and insurance industry ratholes with zero results, excluding the pumping of stocks up for another imminent crash.
Thank you for posting this. I commented on it on an earlier topic s you know. This is a very good example of how good Maddow it. Spot on.
As a side note I am perplexed as to why it is ok to post this but not ok for Fox to comment on the anti Obama stuff in this book. I know you touched on it in the post but I think there is enough good information in this book to use it as you have done and Maddow has done. I find the information interesting even if you want to call it gossip.
Gossip is nearly always interesting - it is always some kind pique to emotion.

As another heads up, Tweety WENT AFTER Palin yesterday on his show. In the same breath he went after Bush too as an idiot. He called them both brain dead. Find it if you can.
and this wasn't the only instance of mccain putting his 'campaign over country'
Why so surprised?
This is a man who risked sinking an aircraft carrier (fortunately failed) and killing comrades (unfortunately succeeded) just for shits and giggles.

So her finger on the nuclear button would be just as bad a scenario as McCain's.
Oh, she's had her finger on the button before and it wasn't the belly button.
"Anyone that makes less than $150K in this country, has no business voting Republican."
Oh that's right - He LOVES being on TV.
This does suggest a strategy for making him answer questions: Stop putting him on TV until he's ready to answer questions. But that would break a rule. Republicans rule the media.
Hussein question.
Hmmmm...we invaded Iraq in March 2003. She is picked for VP in 2008.
Over 5 years of war and commentary and she had questions on who was responsible for 9/11.
I don't care if you had you head up the ass of a moose for over 5 years. There is no way to be uninformed of the identity of the 9/11 hijackers and their leadership unless you were blindingly removed from all things regarding security policy or just didn't care to give a fuck about it.
Or...just really fucking stupid.
Say country first then legislate the exact opposite.
That was a great piece. But she and others should continue to point out the systemic (and systematic) attempt by modern conservatives to verify their model that 'government is the problem' by advancing people of questionable competence and commitment to America's democratic principles. Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman, George W., etc. fit a pattern of incompetence and lack of service to democracy.
Q: Mrs. Palin, what is the 38th parallel?
A: That's the answer to "pie are square".
The Republican is finished. His behavior before, during, and after the elections was shocking, disappointing, and people are never going to forget what the Republicans did for the last decade. This is a dead Republican walking. Shame on the MSM for milking the Republicans just for the controversy! There's plenty of discourse amongst the rest of us. Why keep enlisting a criminal organization when there is an alternative such as reasoned discourse?

John McCain in his own words: (Youtube)
"I didn't decide to run for President to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be President because it had become my ambition to be President. I was 62 years old when I made the decision and I thought it was my one shot at the prize."
Thank (insert deity of your choice here) this crass and irresponsible idiot lost the election. His response to Matt Lauer was sub-pathetic. I hope it is thrown back in his face repeatedly from now on. Some frickin' hero he's turned out to be.
John McLame: No hero, a big zero.
Come on tv and spew his babble. He should apologize to America for making a cravenly, reckless, irresponsible and utterly cynical pick for his VP.
Just say NO!
That Whore McCain essentially Googled her, saw she was pretty and her views was the same as "The Base" that he had failed to get the support of. The problem is Google doesn't show level of stupidity or at least complete or at total lack of curiosity.
As keeps being demonstrated over and over, Palin simply doesn't care to know things. Fine for most, knowledge of stuff not really needed day to day, but when your goal is higher office and those decisions have the potential to effect millions, shouldn't basic knowledge of history, how government works, current events and more are a basic requirement? It is like trying to hire a tax preparer and not particularly caring if he can do basic arithmetic. To "The Base", that is just elitism, to the rest of us that is called being prepared. That Whore McCain's worst crime is now her brand of stupidity will be on Fox News for years to come.
Wow... this question should have been asked EARLY ON of McCain. Personally, I see it as reckless endangerment of this nation. it should almost (if not definitely) be considered criminal.
and Rachael was dancing around Palin's pea brain.
Goodnight, Frau Blücher
i said at the time and still think the repugs used McCain in the most vile and politically cynical moves of all time - and he played the loyal soldier and took one for the party...
i felt at the time the repugs KNEW the economy was imploding and the Rovians did not want the BKs of GM and Chrysler as well as the ensuing languishing economy and devastating unemployment to occur under a repug administration - this way they could debate 'who caused it' but still say 'this didn't happen under OUR watch'...
i felt at the time they needed a fall guy to set up and lose... given the economic situation AND the bullshit of the past eight years under cheney/bush, there was no way the electorate was going to elect another repug...
McCain provided a very convenient straw man...
he'd been portrayed as a 'moderate' - by the media and by his own party
he'd been braying for the candidacy for years
so they while they were set to lose anyway,
- why not eliminate a party hack from future contention without burning a future potential 'hopeful'? - why not let a purposed 'moderate' lose - this way they can bellow 'See!!! The party (country) rejected him... we need to be MORE conservative, not more moderate!' (the resulting purge of party moderates and the wave of tea bagger rallies display this line of thinking)
- why not let this guy introduce 'the future' of the party (as concocted by Rove, and (as delineated by Max Blumenthal in 'Republican Gomorrah') the christianist right ala James Dobson), a previously unknown evangelical radial right female operative - Palin...
the result? mccain craters - eliminating him from future prez campaigns ('we gave you your shot and you lost')
- mccain returns to the senate (where they wanted him all along) where he can maintain the campaign by going against everything the Dim who defeated him proposes - and can remind everyone on the right 'what's wrong with america'
- the Dims inherit the worst economic situation since the 1930s and the repugs can obstruct everything while they point to the 'failures' of the Dims in handling the economy...
- and Palin gets to wait in the wings, sowing discontent and reminding all the reich wingers that 'had you gone REALLY conservative, i.e., go back to our 'roots' as a party / country, we would have won and things would be oh so better now...
all this was achieved by setting mccain up as the loser and using him to introduce the 'future' of the repugs in the form of Miss Palin...
it was a brilliantly cynical move worthy of Sun Tzu - achieve multiple cuts with one swipe of the blade...
(and anyone who thinks rove isn't smart enough to do this forgets he got a coke-snorting national guard awol drunk elected TWICE as president...)
... and i think mccain put what he considers 'country' above his campaign...
