President Obama responds to Chip Reid's question as to whether Sen. Specter's defection from the Republican party is a "game changer" and if the President is going to be able to "run roughshod" over the GOP.

Transcript:

I do think that, to my Republican friends, I want them to realize that me reaching out to them has been genuine. I can't sort of define bipartisanship as simply being willing to accept certain theories of theirs that we tried for eight years and didn't work and the American people voted to change.

But there are a whole host of areas where we can work together. And I've said this to people like Mitch McConnell . I said, look, on health care reform, you may not agree with me that I -- we should have a public plan. That may be philosophically just too much for you to swallow.

On the other hand, there are some areas like reducing the costs of medical malpractice insurance where you do agree with me. If I'm taking some of your ideas and giving you credit for good ideas, the fact that you didn't get 100 percent can't be a reason every single time to oppose my position.

And if that is how bipartisanship is defined, a situation in which basically, wherever there are philosophical differences, I have to simply go along with ideas that have been rejected by the American people in a historic election, you know, we're probably not going to make progress.

If, on the other hand, the definition is that we're open to each other's ideas, there are going to be differences, the majority will probably be determinative when it comes to resolving just hard, core differences that we can't resolve, but there is a whole host of other areas where we can work together, then I think we can make progress.

Dave N.: Well, as long as the GOP is the Limbaugh National Committee, I'm afraid the former scenario is going to reign. Remember how The Great Gasbag himself defined it in his Sermon From the CPAC Mount earlier this year:

Limbaugh: Bipartisanship occurs only after one other result, and that is victory. In other words, let's say as conservatives liberals demand that we be bipartisan with them in Congress. What they mean is: We check our core principles at the door, come in, let them run the show and agree with them. That's bipartisanship to them. To us, bipartisanship is them being forced to agree with us after we politically have cleaned their clocks and beaten them. And that has to be what we're focused on.

"run roughshod" over the GOP

No objection from me.

The PPCMCDTDDABHP may be on to something. I say let's go with his idea of bipartisanship.

Love your descriptions. What about war criminals, torture, but that's too much of a mouth-full (sic) for any sane person.

Really Rush, that's how you define bipartisanship? After the last 8 years of YOUR party's utter CRAP? You should consider yourself lucky that this administration isn't jailing each and every one of you. You are the most hideously useless excuse for human excrement ever. You are FOUL and despicable. Unworthy of even being considered part of the human race. Yet you still are allowed to walk amongst decent people. There are just NO diapers big enough for this fat doughy whining feces covered mentally challenged baby.

/thanks I need to do that. I wish I could to his ugly face.

The GOP should be renamed LimP - the Limbaugh Party.

That is great but I think it is better just to ignore the fool out of the toad--correct his lies but otherwise leave him off the radar..No naming him .. he becomes 'just a radical uninformed bobblehead' ..just like an anonomyous source...

As drug-addled racist, sexist, xenophobic homophobe, Rush Limbaugh becomes the face of today's Republican Party, more and more Americans will turned of by his brand of politics and support the Democratic Party.

I notice how President Obama and the First Lady spend a lot of time with kids. That's smart, because if they ingrain a positive image with these children as to what a "Democrat" is early on, they will identify themselves as Democrats the rest of their lives.

rash represents people/demographics that don't want to get anything done. especially anything done that might NOT be what wallStreet/corporate america i mean china wants. obama is very different than BUSH and his authoritarian ways. BUSH could careless what the legislative branch had to say. the system is about ideas, presenting those ideas and making compromise. some lawmakers won't compromise in the name of ideology. well, we just had 8 yrs. of filibuster, veto, threat to veto and numerous signing statements. people are tired of washington because not much gets done.....a strategy that has to stop.

skycypher's picture

to beat is themselves. They are their own worst enemy. Who can say they will ever gain power again? They are powerless as long as they remain the party of no, and the Democrats cave to Republican tactics.

Grown, supposedly adult people, acting like whiny bratty infants. I will never again point to any other party that loses an election and complains and portray them as whiny. The GOP has cornered the market in that....eating the shit taco, the victimization, the blaming everyone else for their own behavior, they've covered it all.

redjalapeno's picture

He's repetitive.

Mr. Obama just delivered what I consider the most compelling definition of what 'bipartisan' means.

In laymen's terms more or less, he has just provided a length of rope for which the Republican party as a whole must decide to climb or hang themselves with.

It's curiously comforting to have an intelligent president. It has restored a small portion of faith in the ideal that is America.

theWalrus's picture

and the Republicans keep denying. Eventually Obama will realize it's hopeless and come 2010 the voters will give the Dems a super-duper majority.

jrbarringer's picture

He's just giving the rest of us the opportunity to catch up with him as well as giving the Republicans yet another opportunity to reveal themselves as the out-of-touch obstructionists they are.

Right now the Republican Party as a whole is stuck on Panic (Step 3). They'll never be able to move past it because at some point they'll have to accept that they are guilty or at least pretend they are guilty for the situation that they put themselves in right now.

They have tried to skip Step 4 and jump right to Hostility, and that's why the Republican Party looks like complete buffoons.

i think president obama is going to continue to call the RIGHT on their B.S. they are concerned because
a big part of their small identity is based on saying NO to anything that is NOT 100% to their liking. NOT
wanting to attempt changing/fixing something that's broken/not working makes little to NO sense to obama. he's very determined to get healthCare reform passed and he's getting ready to battle. the healthCare insurance system is broken but there are some that don't want it fixed/changed$.

Fox not granted a question at Obama’s press conference.

In tonight's press conference, Obama spent nearly a full hour answering questions from reporters, who represented media organizations such as the Detroit News, the Associated Press, BET, and all three cable networks -- ABC, NBC, and CBS. One outlet that didn't get a question? Fox News, whose affiliate was the only network station that decided not to air the prime-time news conference. Obama called on Fox News White House Correspondent Major Garrett in his previous two press conferences.

I have always believed that when someone has to give a speech in front of the American flag it means that what they say has no merit. Standing in front of the American flag is the only thing even Limbaugh believes will give his bs legitimacy.

The individual is attempting to portray him/herself as a representative of that ideal. This, of course, is not always true.

It is my opinion that the responses that Mr. Obama gave to the questions rendered did embody the American ideal, and as such he should and was in proximity of the symbol that represents that ideal.

...can you tell it's an American flag? I can't barely see it. I thought rush had lost some weight at some point. Must've been a long time ago.

As far as politicians and politics go today the fat ass gas bag is right . The Repugs have been hijacked by the radical lunatic right who have been in the process of destroying their own party , they damn near destroyed the country , for at least six years they cut the Dems completely out of the governing process , they got their asses beat the last two elections , so now Obama and the Dems are going to compromise to please these A holes ? To hell with them . I hope the F'ers complete their self destruction and disappear altogether . I am really enjoying watching the the right wing thugs and lunactics these days , this is fun , what an absolutely pathetic lot .

I know our president was just making a point, but jeez! does he have to mention Mitch McConnell so soon after dinner?!

sixandseveneights's picture

As soon as people started working again, their 401ks started increasing, their home values starting increasing, our record budget deficit started turning into a record surplus and we had peace and prosperity again like we had during the Clinton years they'd throw it all away and vote for a Republican over wedge driven politics. This is what happened during the Clinton years. Things were going good but as soon as Clinton tried to lift the ban on gays in the military the Republicans saw their opening an pounced and Clinton's presidency never fully recovered as the Republicans tried to drive Clinton and the country into the ground for their own self-serving political and financial agendas. f someone somewhere has equal rights whether it be gay marriage or immigration rights or some other minority rights or other wedge issue politics roughly half the country would throw their happiness away in order to vote another Republican and if it meant holding someone else down. Roughly half the people (maybe a 1/3 now since the GOP has done so much damage and is about as popular as Swine flu) would not be content with being happy unless they thought they could ruin it for someone else or vote to hold someone else down even if it meant voting against their own best interest. This or they become scard of their own happiness. This is how conservatism has thrived.

Watch history repeat. As soon as a Democrat pulls America back from the abyss, like Clinton did with Reagan's record budget deficits, the Republicans will find another enemy be it gays, commies, immigrants, brown people, muslims, scary libruls, scary black preachers or Willie Horton... in which to scare and con Americans into throwing their happiness away again once more to vote for them to rob us blind and we would find ourselves right back in the same boat we are today.

Didn't work in the last 2 election cycles because the Republicans have fucked things up so bad this time around, but just wait, as soon as things start turning around again... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTUIHK7gHRE

That would be Greed, Wrath, Gluttony, Vanity, Envy, Lust and what I suspect is Bush's favorite, Sloth. All dished out with a heaping of deceit and brutality.

There is just NO comparison. Future generations will be aghast that anyone with Rushbo's bankrupt, empty ideas was permitted to spout venom and pollute the American airwaves, while the GOP collectively resisted, like a stubborn toddler or teenager, someone as intelligent as Obama.

In fact, I believe that's what Rush would like to happen.

First of all those are basically the same thing except Limbaugh has to add the typical macho posturing to the right wing version and neither is bipartisanship you stupid f*cking piece of sh*t.

Second exactly who cleaned whose clock? Last time I looked the Dems were on top and from the looks of things they're going to be there for a long time.

Bonkers's picture

Typical of a cowardly bully, he doesn't like it when we do unto him as he would to unto us (even though we don't, for crying out loud. Must be nice to be a conservative: spend all your time stabbing your perceived opponents in the back secure in the knowledge that when the roles are reversed, those same people will likely treat you in a manner better than you would ever afford them. Fucking cowards). The bully will pound on his victim all day, laughing and jeering at the pain he is inflicting, but when the victim has finally had enough, turns around and kicks the shit out of him, the bully cries foul and runs home to get his big brother (or his lawyer). To Hell with Republics[sic]. If this is the way they want it, then they can find out for themselves that a progressive/liberal is not necessarily a pacifist. Bring it on, fatboy!

"clean their clock"... using rush's term isnt that what happened to the GOP in the last election? how did this guy become so popular? i know the answer to that...i just dont want to accept it...but there is large slice of america that is absolutely 100% behind the rushbo with his xenophobic/racist/sexism philosophy.

jmmartin's picture

Hey, I think you heard Rush wrong. He didn't say, "To us, bipartisanship is them being forced to agree with us after we politically have cleaned their clocks and beaten them." He said, "...after we...have cleaned their cocks...." That fat prick should have gone to prison for his Oxycontin episode, particularly after he was advocating imprisonment of people for possession of small amounts of drugs. Imagine it, a rank bigot and racist like Lush Rambo stuck in a cell with a 200-lb. all muscle African-American with rape on his mind?
