Passenger Lights Explosive on Delta Flight
So far no reports of the President clearing brush or reading My Pet Goat before reacting to this. From CBS News--Passenger Lights Explosive on Delta Flight:
A Northwest Airlines passenger landing in Detroit on Friday tried to blow up the flight but the explosive device failed, two U.S. national security officials said.
The passenger, who was traveling on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam was being questioned Friday evening, according to one of the officials, both of whom spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing.
The motive of the Christmas Day attack was not immediately clear.
"He appears to have had some kind of incendiary device he tried to ignite," said one of the U.S. officials.
A senior law enforcement source speaking to CBS News has identified the suspect as Nigerian national Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23.
As the plane was on final approach to Detroit Metropolitan Airport, the suspect lit and set off what were at first described as fireworks or firecrackers but may have been another type of explosive.
The explosive material was apparently taped to the man's leg and lit the lower part of his body. He was immediately subdued and restrained and was later transported to a hospital burn unit.
Two other people suffered minor injuries.
If this was an attempted terrorist attack, it sure wasn't very sophisticated. Thankfully it sounds like he was the only one harmed very badly. I feel for all of the people trying to fly with this going on. It's going to make the lines worse than ever. I'm sure we'll have more on this later as we learn more.

There are a number of very simple steps anyone could take to smuggle explosives on a plane. The surprising thing to me is that the people who actually do it are so stupid they can't even properly execute the act of terrorism.
Why are we supposed to be afraid of these dumb fucks? These are mentally ill people with very little faculty to cause mass damage. What this shows us is if smart people with a plan wanted to do some real harm, they could do it any day of the week. With just a tiny bit of planning, any organization with suicidal people could make planes drop from the sky for a month.
The fact that planes aren't dropping from the sky proves there aren't any real threats to our safety, other than overworked underpaid pilots.
"These are mentally ill people with very little faculty to cause mass damage.......until they succeed."
How often do they actually succeed? If you take all the air disasters since the beginning of flight (I haven't been able to find exact numbers) it's a pretty low percentage that come down due to terrorists.
I'm sorry but I refuse to fear these guys. I refuse to do anything my government tells me, because my government is filled with liars and theves. - and to tell the truth I'm not sorry that I am smarter then my government gives me credit for so I am not sorry that I am not afraid of the "terrorists"
I am sure you are smarter than the average (not difficult). You have to remember that the government can keep the average person scared because they are dumb. Look at the Palinistas and the the jokers who voted for McGrampypants and the tea bagging hordes. Just be happy to know that you are smarter than the average bear.

The house I grew up in was at the highest point in town. About 50 or 100 feet below was another and it got hit by lightning (either the house or the tree in the front yard) about every three or four years.
Odd, huh?
Even a broken clock is right twice a day, that doesn't mean it works. The fact that flying in an airplane is the safest form of public transportation is proof that there are not any competent organizations trying to cause terror with airplanes.
I don't know if you remember the college kid that smuggled 4 devices on planes that should have never made it past security. Or do you remember the string of reports out of the TSA saying they failed to detect bombs in tests run by the TSA?
It is virtually impossible to stop people with even a modicum of intelligence from wreaking mass havoc on planes. The fact that we still fly safely every day shows that no such organization exists or is willing to do it.
Everyone was pretty quick to release a name. Sounds Muslim doesn't it? You all stay scared now.

Crazy insane stuff.
Seems grandma can't get on a plane without her bra being searched - the TSA and no-fly lists just can't keep the planes clear of the crazy.
I'm glad I never have to fly these days and I feel sorry for those who have to.

So was it an "explosive" or an "incendiary device" (e.g. did he have something like a colostomy bag of gasoline taped to himself)? One wonders whether the "subduing" included a lot of holding him down and smothering the fire when he set his legs alight.
He lit a cigarette.
Can't do that on flights no more.

WASHINGTON – An official briefed on the attack on a Detroit airliner said Saturday the U.S. has known for at least two years that the suspect in the attack could have terrorist ties.

So they let a suspected terrorist make it through two international checkpoints unscathed? Whatsamatter? People not frightened enough? Need to ratchet up the fear a bit?

That Kind said this.
"King, the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, said no federal air marshals were on the flights from Nigeria to Amsterdam and from Amsterdam to Detroit. Mutallab did not go through full-body image screening at either airport, the congressman said."
Jurisdictional? Maybe.
But King is a dumbass for saying that.

We've been shit-house lucky that nobody who really dislikes us has bothered to hit us because we've done nothing that could actually prevent them from doing so. Further "do something!" type of measures will not enhance security one iota, and all the false positives will annoy the living shit out of people to the point where the people charged with securing things will be forced to slack off.

He also happened to be on a "watch list." I figured that would get him denied a ticket or maybe a body cavity search, but I guess not.
This is a failure of the intelligence organizations. This guy had a valid visa. The same for the hijackers on 11 Sept. So instead of stopping these type of people they stop me at passport control almost every time and ask me why I went on holiday in Europe and the same at customs where they search my bags.

As soon as he tried anything, the passengers jumped his ass. What a moron, especially on a flight from Canada to Detroit. What an idiot.
Imagine the conversation:
"I WILL BLOW UP THE PLANE!!!"
"WTF? Look, you idiot, I'm on a plane leaving a country that has universal health care, low crime, high privacy, quality education, where pot is largely decriminalised, and I can marry someone of my own sex, AND I'm LEAVING ALL THAT to go to a city with 50% unemployment, universal illiteracy, weather like siberia, an economic future that makes Somalia look good, and all repleat with all the freeways of Los Angeles, and YOU'RE playing some kind of a FEAR CARD on us passengers? WHERE do you think we live? You think we're afraid of some jackass like you? Heck - I'll take you apart with my bare hands right now you stupid son of a bitch!"
The MOMENT I see someone light a match on a plane, I would instantly leap at them and do significant harm. And it seems that is exactly what happened.

Post of the day!
Nothing about this story is credible, starting with the premise that my grandma gets strip-searched at airport security gates while Nigerians make it through security at two airports with explosives strapped to their legs.
They effin' confiscated my double edged razor blades.
They pulled me out of the line and made me disarm my safety razor.
I felt much better knowing that a terrorist wielding a double edged razorblade would not have been able to storm the locked door to the cockpit, slice it open and shave the pilot and copilot to death.
while golfing. Leading a heroic team of anti terror agents, president Obama foiled a terror attack from his specially equipped golf cart during his daily 18 hole work schedule . .
n/t
No ifs about it; it was an attempted terrorist attack. Matter of fact the individual was on a watch list but he wasn't on a do not fly list. Makes no sense to me we allow people on the watch list to fly. His attempt is on the heels of the recent AQ video exhorting Muslims to carry out individual attacks using weapons they can easily make.
This attempt illustrates the threat is real and there are plenty of seams between the various agencies whose job is to protect us. If this guy is on a watch list, why wasn't he taken into custody when he showed up at security?
I don't know why I bother to keep repeating this, but until we know the man's motivations and mental state, then we do not, repeat not know if this was an attempted terrorist attack.
Why is it so hard for people to understand that defining terrorism isn't about who does it or what they do? The only difference between a terrorist act and any other crime is the motivation of the offender.
Even assuming that the man is Muslim (I don't know if that's been confirmed yet), even assuming that he claims to be affiliated with Al Qaeda - he could still be nothing more than your garden-variety mentally ill offender. Would that make what he's done any less of a crime? Of course not. But that also does not necessarily make him a terrorist.

Admittedly I'm not real hep on the details of what happened but it strikes me very much at this point like the stories that came out after the liquid bomb crap - that you could combine two different chemicals to get an explosion.
At the time, actual experts in that sort of thing said it was impossible and that the new anti-toothpaste regulations were a waste of time, because the combining the 2 chems wouldn't generate enough heat to actually explode, they'd just burn. So far, that sounds exactly like what happened.
Of course, in order to be seen as tough on terr'rism, we'll have to have more regulations banning anything liquid at all, plus sexy strip searches of suspicious hotties.
Hooray.
I know this is an old post and I shouldn't respond, but combining chemicals that will burn is just as dangerous on an airplane as a bomb, imo.
Some chemical fires burn at 4000 degrees and cannot be put out. They would burn through the thin skin of an aircraft very quickly.
The terrorist in question was attending a very well-respected engineering school.

"...it sure wasn't very sophisticated."
There's a big difference between not sophisticated and mentally ill. This is a case of mental illness, not unsophisticated terrorism.
When I was working the psych unit back when I was a third year medical student, I managed, with my kean third year questioning, to elicit a threat to kill his brother-in-law from a known schizophrenic who had basically come in to the ER to get out of the cold. But even the third year me had enough sense to not raise the alarm and call out the National Guard over this threat, after the follow-up question that even the third year me knew enough to ask, elicited the means whereby this guy was planning to off his bro-in-law. He was going to use mind waves to knock the guy over, way off in his apartment in Chicago 1500 miles away.
The airline passengers of this great nation are in approximately the same danger from guys who intend to kill them by lighting home-made incendiary paste they have smeared on their thighs, as brothers-in-law this great nation over are in danger from brain waves. So don't blame any travel delay, any addition to the already excessive "security" measures at our airports on this mentally ill person. Blame the folks who have decided that such delay is a small price to pay for maintaining a politically useful climate of fear and an ongoing regime of terror. Blame yourself for continuing to elect these people to office.
Hey, at least this Thunder Thighs guy has the excuse of being mentally ill. What about the rest of us? What's our excuse?
Basically we have no idea what is happening to us and, naturally, no idea of what we are going to do.
Ignorance is our default setting, as we are so much more often more ignorant about events around us, than we understand them. All of us manage to be successfully ignorant, in that we handle the ignorance without a destructive response, many times every day.
The problem here isn't ignorance, the absence of ideas, that we have no idea of what is happening to us or what to do about it. We'ld be fine if that was the case, because the absence of ideas would lead to the correct public response to this event, which is nothing, nothing at all. The problem is that while we have very firm and definite ideas about something called "terrorism" and something called "al Qaeda", our real situation is ignorance, and neither of those ideas explains anything. We can't acknowledge that we don't have anything useful to think or do about such events, and so end up not just standing there, but doing something, when not just doing something, but standing there, would be the better choice.
One thing that seems to be missing from the media reports and interviews I've seen is that this flight ORIGINATED IN AMSTERDAM and it was THEIR SECURITY LAPSE NOT OURS!!!
Everyone is getting up in arms about the security lapse and how it is going to affect the security checkpoints at airports in the U.S. Frankly, it should have NO EFFECT on our airports as it wasn't our security lapse, it was the Netherlands'. If anything the FAA should be denying landings for all flights coming out of the Netherlands until their government does something to address the security lapse.
Hello, reality check on aisle three!
Let's also not forget that al Qaeda doesn't send lone bombers on single planes. There's no history of this and nothing to suggest that if they did start sending them that they would send one man, and only one, on one plane. Makes no sense. This was a wannabe that failed miserably, thank goodness. But, it doesn't change the fact that al Qaeda has not claimed responsibility, nor released any statements (as yet) to link them to the incident; something they are very fond of doing.
Let's take this for what it was, a deranged idiot-or small group of idiots, who knows at this point if others helped him build and conceal the device-that thought he could take down a plane and show how cool he was to al Qaeda.
There's no such thing as al keeeda. It's just a brand created by our own gov and adopted by random idiots to make themselves seem more important and organised than they really are.
