Papantonio and Holland on What 'Shared Sacrifice' Means To A Republican
From Ring of Fire Radio -- Papantonio: What "Shared Sacrifice" Means To A Republican:
There's been a lot of talk recently about so-called "shared sacrifice." Politicians from both the left and the right have said that everyone will need to make sacrifices until we can get our economy back on track. The only problem is that the Wall Street billionaires who caused our economic collapse are not having to sacrifice anything, while working class families continue to struggle to put food on the table.
And here's Holland's column over at AlterNet from last month that they discussed during the interview -- Yet Another Wall Street Billionaire Asks Working Americans to Sacrifice -- Why Do the Media Still Listen to These Guys?:
Working America has sacrificed a great deal in the last 40 years, yet wealthy Wall St. CEOs keep asking for more.
Working America has sacrificed a great deal in the last 40 years: its share of the national income, its economic security and the dignity that comes with decent health and retirement benefits. Those at the top of the pile have sacrificed nothing – they're grabbing more income and paying less in taxes today than they did during the mid-century boom years. Yet, we are being asked by those very elites for “shared sacrifice.” The question is, how much “sacrifice” the little guy has to make before the big boys start sharing it.
It's clear to see how the toxic ideology of Ayn Rand has permeated our political culture, all the way up to America's well-heeled elites. Whereas the wealthy were once viewed with some scorn as the idle rich, children of privilege who know little about life in the real world, they now claim to have been imbued with innate, almost super-human intelligence and they offer their wealth to prove it. Those claims go largely unchallenged.
But if you look at the discourse proffered by these feral elites, it's clear that a wingnut with a lot of money is no more rational than the "get a brain, morans" guy of viral fame. Just this week, Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan Chase, called new banking regulations “un-American.” What did he mean? Who knows? It's a facile talking point. Read on...

Sadly, I think my retired mom--with her nice custom home on a few view acres in McShame County, AZ, with their two Lexi, Jeep, $200K motorhome on which they still pay,my Harley-- believes she's in that group. Or at least often acts the part-- I've got mine, now tune out the bad stuff, tune in Jeebus, all will be OK.

I'd be all for 'shared sacrifice' during an economic downturn if we also had 'shared prosperity' during the economic booms. Why is sharing prosperity considered socialism, but sharing the sacrifice (which the super-rich don't really 'share' in anyway) supposed to be our patriotic duty?
That's a good point. You have to ask, if everyone is giving until it hurts, who is doing the taking?
and particularly so given corps have the past FY laid on record profits. SOMEONE sure as fuck is prospering, but i dont see it being shared around. yet as soon as it comes to sacrifice - oh YOU fellas do that, im not gettin in there....
there is a big disconnect happening when as Bucky says, sharing prosperity is 'socialism' but sharing sacrifice is only for the peons. even fucking Mark Cuban can see that sharing prosperity via taxes is patriotic. it goes to show just how far away from the obvious political discourse in the US has drifted, in the sense that Cuban found it 'obvious' - in essentially marxist terminology - that from him who has much much, should contribute accordingly.
but that sort of 'obvious' thinking is in precious short supply in the Beltway Bubble, and most people raising such thoughts are immediately derided as Socialists. until that changes there is little chance of turning things around, imo
Love this guy. When dumb-ass Republicans call his show with their spoon fed bullshit talking points Papantonio just toys with their stupidity then slaps them around with knowledge until they simply hang up. It's pure entertainment.
Someone's always doing the fucking, and someone's always getting fucked.
And you know, we were somewhat ok with that because that's always been the way of the world.
But recently, the rich decided to heighten their pleasure by adding broken glass, pebbles, and sand, and raping us, and then looking around for any of our spare change that might have fallen in between the couch cushions.
They need to realize that, with OWS, they can deal with us as DFH's now.
Or they'll have to deal with us as Jacobins in the future.
The focus and hatred some liberals/progressives have towards Ayn Rand disturbs me. For many people her books were about atheism and rejecting dogmatism...whatever.
Rand was godless, there's a huge difference. Neither believes in a god, but one of us believes in humanity, that would be me.
For many people her books were about atheism and rejecting dogmatism...whatever.
Basing ideology and beliefs on poorly written science fiction is no way to go through life.
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
Ha! It's a good way to start a religious movement, though. (That's where the real money is).
a "sacrifice" is defined as: the offering (burnt or otherwise) of a plant, animal or human life to a deity as homage.
I suggest we may want to gather up a few of these Repukes and 1%'ers and see if they'd like to "share" in that form of sacrifice. It'll be getting chilly on Wall Street soon! # : D

It's always the damn Reslug media covering for the millionaires.
Obama and Democratic party, along with nearly all the media, has fallen into the rut of a tired, old Reagan framing of taxes as "sacrifice" on the premise that supporting the government is something painful and onerous.
On the contrary, everyone contributing at a level of their means to the common good is fundamental to the concept of democracy.
The Democratic party should be framing this as a patriotic duty, NOT a "shared sacrifice". Anyone who thinks supporting the government through taxes should be called out for what they are seditious traitors.
The whole proposition that the top 1% of the population that controls the majority of the economic wealth is "sacrificing" to contribute at a higher level than the middle class working citizen is a ludicrous fraud started by the neo-cons in the 1980s era "the most terrifying words are 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help" bullshit.
"... a government of the PEOPLE, by the PEOPLE, and FOR THE PEOPLE..."
I want to go to Ayn Rand's grave, dig up her ugly ass, so I would have the pleasure of beating the shit out of it before burying her again.

I got a guy in my class who's into Zombies too. Or is that technically Political Necrophilia?

I like fastfeat's idea better. Necrophiliacs are into playing with the dead, and beating the shit out of Ayn Rand's corpse is not what I would consider necrophilia,
It was a joke... a wordplay thing.
But... I like the idea of pointing to the the GOPer's Political Necrophilia. The Neo Cons have been metaphorically digging up Ms. Rand and having a drooling, adoring sexfest with her and her blatant Sociopathy for 30 years or more. I think it's a kind of Necrophilia.

and Wallstreet gave us economic terrorism along with their Republican flunkies. Their actions put this country in harms way, more damaging than any one event, round them up and treat them like terrorists, confiscate their assets and use them to help out the country.
Just like the authorities attempt to do to Drug dealers and other criminals or terrorists....
