Melissa Harris-Perry: Is the Contraception Debate a Symptom of the Daddy State?
As Nicole already noted, this weekend was the launch of Melissa Harris-Perry's new weekend show on MSNBC. I've got to say, the show was as refreshing as Chris Hayes' weekend show, which is sadly airing way too early for those without their recorders set to watch it in most parts of the country. Maybe MSNBC can hold off on those endless hours of Lockup and To Catch A Predator episodes to run both shows later in the day.
During this segment, Melissa's panel members took a look at an appearance by Mitt Romney's father, former Gov. George Romney, on Meet the Press from back in 1967 and just how far the Republican Party and our entire political dialog has been shifted to the right. She also asked whether the current debate over contraception is a result of the "daddy state" and the authoritarianism which has accompanied that shift.
From Harris-Perry's new blog, her panel members included:
Baratunde Thurston, digital director of The Onion, comedian and co-founder of Jack & Jill Politics. Author of the recently-published (and hilarious) How to Be Black. Read Melissa's review of it here.
Chloe Angyal, freelance writer and editor at Feministing, where she blogs about gender, sex, politics, pop culture and body image. Currently writing her doctoral thesis on romantic comedies; read her recent Jezebel piece, "I Spent a Year Watching Rom-Coms and This is the Crap I Learned."
Dorian Warren, assistant professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, and fellow at the Roosevelt Institute. Watch him talk about the "recession generation" with Melissa as she guest-hosted "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell" last summer.

Feministing is a full on radical feminist authoritarian hate site.

Dear Whoever is in charge at msnbc,
Please replace Joe Scarborough and Mika with Chis Hayes and Melissa Harris-Perry. I promise to never miss a show if you do.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
female sexuality why even talked about banning contraceptives when there is a more effective solution: female circumcision. Kill the ability for women to enjoy sex and you never have to worry about women and sex. Problem solved forever.
Please don't give the Christian Talibanists any ideas! You know, they already blame victims of rape. And they're trying to say that women who wear skirts are asking to be raped that soon they'll be insisting that women cover themselves from head to toe. Now they're saying that women don't have the right to be responsible and enjoy sex whenever and with whomever they want. Don't plant another ugly seed!
should women have to obtain a death certificate after each menstrual cycle?
bonus round:
which women should face charges for accepting the serpent's apple and the subsequent 'Fall From Grace'?

... god only told adam about the tree of knowledge ... eve only disobeyed what adam told her ... and man fell from grace because adam ate the apple ... eve's transgression only resulted in women being cursed with painful childbirth ... well, that and dickish men lording it all over women ever since
Christians are taught it was the woman (not named at that point) that caused original sin and the fall of Adam. The man was first and was put in charge. The woman is here as man's companion (I hear dogs described that way) and is the temptress that caused mans downfall.
Get them women in their place when ya got 'em young and in your Sunday schools.
Hell of a scenario to present to a little girl... it's all great-great-grandma's fault, so you better not even think about tempting us again...."your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you" - (see below)
This all happened because a man "listened to the voice of his wife." -(see below)
The Fall of Man is described in Genesis the point where Adam and Eve sinned against God,
and fell from grace.
The event is also known as the Original Sin. According to the Bible, this sin brought death into the world, but humans remain immortal beings to be resurrected to eternal life in heaven, or eternal death in hell. The Bible also seems to imply that humans were designed to live immortally in their physical bodies before Adam and Eve committed the original sin.
.....
“Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”.[Gen. 3:11]
To the woman God said:
I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;
in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband,
and he shall rule over you.[Gen. 3:16]
To Adam God said:
Because you have listened to the voice of your wife,
and have eaten of the tree about which I commanded you, You shall not eat of it",
cursed is the ground because of you;
in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
and you shall eat the plants of the field.
By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground,
for out of it you were taken; you are dust,
and to dust you shall return.[Gen. 3:17]
.....
Then God kicked them out of the Garden and put a guard on the tree of life to make sure they stayed mortal.
it was more that the pain of childbirth ...
..."well, that and dickish men lording it all over women ever since" - and that structure is pretty well ingrained in the bible from Genesis forward.
I'm so glad my daughters were never taught any of this biblical shit as being the truth.

Especially Chris. Likeable. Friendly. Deceptively smart.
Sadly, not enough of these white-collar assholes doing time to even fill a one-hour episode.

ever since artificial contraception became widely available, the patriarchs realized they were losing control over women, and they haven't liked it one bit. what we are witnessing, aside from the obvious political kabuki, is the last gasp rantings of said patriarchy, as they see the final shackles being broken. in fact, we are witnessing the dying shrieks of the republican party, as their "southern strategy" reaches its inevitable end-game.
realistically, none of the republican candidates has a chance of defeating obama in nov. of this year. they know it, the party poobahs know it. they are all fatally damaged goods, representative of the party itself. the very best they can hope to accomplish is to somehow damage obama and the democrats, but they're too blinded by impotent rage to do even that.
the republicans will get that 20% of the "i want to live back in the good old days, of the 12th century" vote, and that's pretty much it. fortunately for the rest of us, that 20% is, literally, dying off, as we speak.
It is the Dead-beat Daddy State.
More people need to see how the SCHOLAR and The Kid can really shed a different light on many important subjects. Not only, MHP has the experience in NO after Katrina and Chris is the future of the country. He is our hope and his mind is so curious and smart. DADDY STATE. Fathers care about their children and their families. This is not about being the DADDY, it is all about being the dominant male over females and being afraid of equality of women.

"Middle class societies don't emerge automatically as an economy matures, they have to be CREATED through political action." Paul Krugman.
I know, what I typed in the subject box seems like I am trying to start a fight...but let me explain. Lately, President Obama starts off some of his public appearances with little jokes describing how he likes the fact that when his daughters start dating they will be accompanied by men with guns (i.e. Secret Service protection). Those kind of comments are good for a few laughs and a lot of approving nods from fathers-of-daughter everywhere.
But here's the problem...it's incredibly paternalistic (yeah, it's actually, *literally* paternalisitic...). He is saying 1. I don't trust my daughters enough to appropriately judge the character of any guy she agrees to date, and 2. he doesn't think she will be able to handle herself in a tricky situation, and 3. that her sexuality is something HE should control by force!
Let's say the Obama daughters start dating one-on-one at 16 or 17. (And by dating one-on-one I mean spending time with a boy somewhere else beside a school dance or group activity). By that age I had spent time with guys who I knew were with me for one reason only...one even went so far as to confess his love for me! I knew *immediately* that he was full of shit! I fell in love for the first time at 16 and we dated for a full year before I was ready to have sex. I waited because I was busy being a high school student and I knew I was in no way ready for a baby. The Obama girls are, from all accounts, bright, capable strong girls. I know the President loves them with all his heart and soul, but I believe there is a fine line between showing your girls you are there to protect them and insinuating that they *need* your protection.
One of the better things I've read this weekend. As a male, one of the hardest things to overcome was allowing myself to give my daughter the respect you describe here. Hell, I **KNOW** what a teenage boy is like (and they are only more so these days) and - damn it! - girls just don't take warnings as seriously as they ought to. A boy who they think is a "BFF" is still full of raging hormones knocking their normal acknowledged boundaries out-of-whack.
The one time I really went nuts was when a guy 4 years older was her current flame and I confronted HIM with my accusations and paranoia. Freakin' predator...
She survived my Crazy Years...
... these comments bother me, too
all children, male and female, need to go out into the world armed with knowledge about their sexuality and about the risks and benefits of intimacy ... and the president of the united states perpetuating notions that female "virtue" is a fortress to be defended by parents and other authorities against lustful, untrustworthy males, undermines girls' belief in their own, real power to control their sexuality
I'VE HAD ENOUGH! In this Holy War on Religion, of Religion, and by Religion, I SURRENDER! I’m a lover, not a fighter. Instead... I’m gonna start my OWN religion, and get in on the good stuff: tax exemptions, and lots of taxpayer money to do what I want, in the name of religious liberty. Most definitely! Hey NEWT -wanna join? We’re gonna have open marriages and multiple wives and all SORTS of neat stuff that you’re just gonna love! But don’t you worry your little head Newt : we’ll have no , I repeat, NO nasty stoning of adulterers. None of that stuff. I Promise! As for SANTORUM, he just LOVES to tell other people how to live. He’ll make us a REAL fine preacher-man. In fact, we’ll make him Saint Santorum. AND fix his Google search results! As for Mr. Obama, obviously, we’ll need to (severely) demonize him, even further. And his dog Toto too. Last but not least: MITT and RON. Hmmm. Hey, just for you two guys: we’ll insist on NO TAXES AT ALL for church members…AND human sacrifice of illegal aliens. Out with their hearts! Televised! Live! Whoooppee! WHAT A COUNTRY! :-)
By the way, please don’t mention the REASON that Mitt Romney’s dad was born in Mexico (i.e. The fact that Mitt’s Mormon grand-dad left the United States in the 1880’s. He went to Mexico BECAUSE laws against polygamy were passed in the U.S. ; Being a Mormon back then, Mitt’s grand-dad wanted to keep his multiple wives. Hey, who wouldn’t?) Bottom line: if we follow the “logic” of the people crying crocodile tears about a non-existent “war on religion”, then the U.S. should have allowed polygamy (and who knows what else) just because a particular religion claimed it as their cherished belief. GIVE ME A BREAK!
Absolutely NO ONE is coming into our Churches or places of worship and trying to tell parishioners what to believe.....or forcing them to use contraception. BUT If the Bishops (and other denominations) want to continue running businesses that employ millions of people of varying faiths -or no "faith" at all- THEN they must play by the same rules and rights that other workers have and enjoy...especially if their businesses use our tax dollars (and skip paying taxes) in the process. This is not a “war on religion”. It’s a war on women and men who simply want to plan their families and control their future. Now that’s REAL religious liberty!
Sorry pal, Romney and the Mormons already beat you to it.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
Here's what I've been thinking recently as I watch this ludicrous debate... and if I've made some logical howlers, or if this is a stupid argument, I'd appreciate the correction, since this is an issue I'd like to understand thoroughly:
Just as corporations are not and ought not be people, so too religious institutions are not and should not be people. Freedom of religion as guaranteed in the Constitution should apply first and most urgently to individual citizens... NOT to large religious institutions, whether they be churches or charities or Catholic hospitals, etc. Now: the way I understand it, in order to receive public funding, a church-sponsored clinic or hospital cannot discriminate on religious terms about whom they hire or to whom they provide their services... right? However, if they then specify that they, as an instiutution, will not allow their employees to receive benefits that are contrary to the institution's specific religious beliefs -- that is, that they will exclude from their insurance coverage specific benefits that are otherwise guaranteed, and for which specific workarounds have been developed to allow the employees to receive them without compromising the employer's position -- then they are mandating that their employees live their private lives as though they were orthodox believers in the church's religious views.
Nobody's having Rush Limbaugh's "mindless sex" on the job in a Catholic hospital, so contraception falls into the employees' private lives... it has little or nothing to do with the performance of their job. On top of that, 90-some percent of faithful Catholic women are using contraception. So when institutions claim a moral exception for basic coverage, it seems to me they are clearly violating their employees' freedom of religion. They are demanding a greater adherence to their own dogma than their own self-professed believers are willing to accept. That seems to me to invalidate their claim that their religious freedoms are being violated...
