Just doing my best here to help Digby achieve her life's work.

I plan to make it my life's work to remind Chris Matthews of these little exchanges. It was the day that Matthews revealed that he and the other media whores were not just shilling for the GOP for professional reasons, but that they actually had a barely contained (and inexplicable) sexual attraction to George W. Bush.

Chris Matthews finds another excuse to praise W for his flight suit appearance on the USS Lincoln.

Matthews: Before we break, President Obama’s taken flack for his war time decision making—a little too much hand wringing some critics say—not enough snap to it. But no such knocks on the way the Commander in Chief gives his salute. The editor of Smithsonian Magazine, a former Marine himself recently decreed that Obama’s salute at Dover Air Force Base was impeccable in every way. He said it’s spot on as a mastery of standards as set by the armed services themselves.

Presidents have long taken salutes from the troops that attend them but Ronald Reagan, the movie star who made training films during his service in WWII was the first to actually return those salutes and boy did he get it right. Check out the sweep of his arm there. And then there was George H. W. Bush, the WWII fighter pilot, who kept up Reagan’s tradition. Bush’s salute as you can see was less dramatic than Reagan’s but did have a snap to it.

Bill Clinton who was as a candidate was best known for his youthful opposition to a war caused some flack for his solute which was, well, it was a bit uncertain when he first took office but after a while, he got it down pat.

As for George W. Bush, who could forget this moment on the deck of the U.S.S. Lincoln? That beats even Reagan when it comes to Commander in Chief performance art. But getting back to our current president, it does seem that the president’s salute isn’t the only one he’s mastered.

Remember Mr. Spock’s Vulcan salute in Star Trek? Obama showed that off at a black tie dinner earlier this year. Live long and prosper.

Matthews does these sort of segments week after week on his Sunday bobblehead show and I assume he thinks he's being either cute or funny. Generally they're neither with this week's addition being no exception.

Chris is a closet homo? Or just a want to be?
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness that is killing America!

)O(

Salute.
just sayin.

...

Maybe solute if saluting the sun?

If drinking before 5 p.m.?

Is this article about chemistry?

Okay, Fair enough!

Great reporting Chris.

sw####ow?

He'd savor it.

the fact that reagan, and his neoliberal presidential brethren, actually return salutes is fitting, as the office has turned into a quasi-military post, helped in part thru the constant militarism in domestic and foreign policy.

that said, in all fairness to matthews, he referred to bush's stunt as "Commander in Chief performance art", which it was

at the high level of reporting by Matthews. Who else would have reported on this very important news?

He seems extra excited about this.

Matthews?

Um you need to be going after the Anti Left and Anti Progressive, (etc,) White House.

But no such knocks on the way the Commander in Chief gives his salute.

When I was in Air Force Basic Training we had to always put the seat of the toilet back up after use, presumably for aid in inspection. If you left the seat down, they made you go in to the toilet, and salute it, and apologize to it.

I was on latrine duty for the entirity of Basic and saw this any number of times. The entire time I was in Basic, I had trouble with saluting due to my glasses, they were in the requisite Buddy Holly style. I kept clipping the corner of it so they would rock on my nose and sometimes hurt.

One day they said I left the toilet seat down, and I didn't believe it and was a little bit pissed, but not as much as the toilet. I decided to do the best I could, imagining the results.

The drill sergeant had me go through the whole bit, and I went right from the outside seams of my pants and snapped a salute to the corner of my eyes so hard it almost hurt my shoulders, and literally barked the required words, "Sorry to let you down, sir!"

My drill sergeant just looked at me, and shook his head slowly a couple of times, and said, "That was the best salute I've seen you give, and you gave it to a toilet."

I just grinned.

(I'm sure ya'll are already tired of that story.)

Americas S+M macho culture at it's finest.

he sucks harder than the biggest black hole at the very core of his being.

National Enquirer understands the basic principles of journalism better than the MSM - Matthews . . etc, anymore.

)O(

About as hard as the black hole in our toilets.

blecch - maybe he doesn't understand that 4685 soldiers have died and many, many more scarred physically and mentally and untold iraqs (at least a million) by a seriously bungling commander in chief in a unnecessary war....

Hitler had a snappy salute as well - oops did I go there?

Dumbya looks just like his mom, Barbara, and that isn't a pretty sight.

We are now just a few weeks away from an official election year. Expect the fawning over Republicans while denigrading Democrats by Chris Matthews to develope into full force. That's his style; pretend to be deferential to Dems during NON election years, building up his credibility as a "Dem defender" when it doesn't matter to add even more credibility to his Dem attacks during big election years when it does matter.

We got a small reminder of how that works in Tweety-World during the recent off-election year elections. He was utterly non-committal about either candidate in the NY 23 district race and the Virginia gubernatorial race, and had only one position on the New Jersey gubernatorial race...that Democrat Corzine was a shitheel for running an ad that dared to show his Republican opponent's body from the waist up, revealing what an out-of-control fat slop he is.

Of all the elections going on in this current off-election year, Chris Matthews was only interested in taking sides in one single case...that being AGAINST a Democrat running in the only race where a Democratic loss might suggest waning support for Barrack Obama because that was the only race where Obama repeatedly campaigned for the Dem (Corzine in New Jersey).

There is going to be a LOT more of that shift from Dem support to Rep support from Chris Matthews once the mid-term election year campaigning gets under way in earnest. There always is.

say . . "Quit buying. Quit using all that electrical stuff. Quit traveling all over the world. Quit driving. Just eat, be happy you are breathing and work to grow your mind and soul and let's see if we can come to understand this ruined world around us and how to heal it".

What kind of suit was Obama wearing? What was Michele Obama wearing?

Chris knows what makes his own little soldier stand up and salute and it seems it just might be men who salute smartly. That tingle that runs up his leg wakes his little sleeping soldier.

And here boys and girls is another from the Waaay Back When Machine:

http://www.historycommons.org/events-images/a...

I'll bet he has a poster of Bush in his flight suit hanging directly over his bed.

Probably directly over the couch his wife makes him sleep on.

Weird and sad.

I can't help but think of Eisenhower, the last real military leader to be president. I doubt he felt the need to prove himself with a perfect salute.

As president, did Ike return salutes? Why should a president have to? He's commander in chief, but the constitution mandates civilian control of the military. The president is not a military officer.

One of the greatest myths that grew out of Bush landing on the USS Lincoln was that he piloted that S-3C Viking himself. Nothing could be further from the truth. That aircraft has only one set of flight controls and there is no way in hell he landed that plane on that ship. He was a passenger in the right hand seat. Of course they made it look like he landed it and got "an okay three wire." Bullshit.

is juvenile. He reminds me of this big high school jock wannabe who wishes he could be in the locker room with the football captain so he could get a glimpse of how big the captain's sausage is.

He thinks he's funny, witty, and oh so clever with his wacky analogies. He's just an overgrown pud worshipper!

And in other words he was saying "what a pathetic actor in chief Bush was". Of course only the "Dumb ol me" feels this way. Everyone else is so much smarter. I hate Matthews, he is so.. you know...he thinks he is cute or funny. Is that gum in my hair?

"Matthews does these sort of segments week after week on his Sunday bobblehead show and I assume he thinks he's being either cute or funny. Generally they're neither with this week's addition being no exception."

Not if you're an insufferable scold I guess.
I understand that Chris wasn't demonstrating the required amount of vitriol everyone here reserves for Bush, but he definitely wasn't disrespecting Obama. As he said-"But getting back to our current president, it does seem that the president’s salute isn’t the only one he’s mastered."
See? He's acknowledging that Obama shows proper respect for the military salute and that he's human with the added-on spock joke. Tepidly edgy at best.
When did the Left become so averse to a mild bit of irreverence?

Penis Worship.

There is a photo of Jimmy Carter -- yes, Jimmy Carter, the Democrat all Republicans love to hate -- saluting a Marine as he boarded a helicopter at the White House.

The story that Reagan was the first to return the salute is bogus (as was his administration).
