While discussing the media allowing Sarah Palin being allowed to rain all over Mitt Romney's announcement that he's running for president this week, Bloomberg's Margaret Carlson admitted on CNN's Reliable Sources that our media really doesn't have much concern for what ought to be serious topics, but instead are "going to follow the shiny object" as they have in the case of Donald Trump and Sarah Palin.
Sadly between media consolidation and the merger of what passes for news being mixed in with entertainment, you could make that same statement about a vast amount of what fills our airways these days.
KURTZ: Mitt Romney declared his candidacy for president of the United States in New Hampshire on Thursday. He was on page three of "The Manchester Union-Leader." She was on page one.
She's not running, at least not now. He's been running for a long time. He made it official.
It seems like something's screwed up here.
CARLSON: Listen, we are always go going to follow the shiny object, so let's just give that up. Donald Trump was not a serious presidential candidate.
KURTZ: And got plenty of coverage.
CARLSON: And got plenty of coverage.
KURTZ: And got more coverage when he had pizza with Sarah Palin this week, which was this great New York photo-op.
CARLSON: Oh, right, the two phenoms coming together. But, you know, of all the states in the lower 48, she picked New Hampshire. It's not an accident. She wanted to crash his party, and she did, and she can.
So, throughout this campaign, have you to feel sorry for Republicans who are serious about it. She can come in at any moment and upset their apple carts. That's just who she is and how much coverage she can get.

She had good reason not to.
where the press absolutely mocks what journalism is supposed to be and then stands by it proudly as if its some kind of new accomplishment.
The framers would be rolling in their graves. I don't think this is the "freedom of the press" that they were thinking would be protected.
What a mixed up country this is getting to be. The dumbest people in the Republican party are being considered for President.
As if Reagan and Bush the Boy Blunder reminded everyone of Copernicus and Galileo ?
they were controlled by the people around them......GHW Bush and various others for Reagan, Dick Cheney and the Neocons for Dubya.

You got that right.

for those that are serious. They are lying about everything and can't be serious about getting my vote.
Newspapers are all but dead. Television news is no longer intended to be a public service. These things have changed and they will never go back to what they used to be. Nor will we ever go back to using a block printing press – so this isn’t all bad.
We do have much more information available to us than we used to. It’s just not consolidated and presented in the same format. And it is mixed in with a lot of garbage. So it’s now up to us to find, disseminate, and recognize real “news” from titillating entertainment and self-serving propaganda. Unfortunately, the skill to do so hasn’t kept up with the technology that affords us so much information. That’s the real danger: that so many people can’t yet tell the difference.
Always easier to do the journalistic equivalent of rubbernecking rather than take a dry, but important topic and make it interesting.
Means "Dazzling"................There is absolutely nothing dazzling about either Trump or Palin......

Someone needs to remind Carlson of the old proverb which says "all that glitters is not gold." Also, whether Carlson realizes it or not, she's basically equating herself and her fellow journalists to very young children, who are likewise indiscriminately attracted to shiny and noisy things without giving any thought to their value (and whose attention span is similarly short and easily distracted by the newest plastic novelty). A remarkably apt analogy, unfortunately...
Never trust anyone who insists that patriotism requires you to blindfold yourself with the flag.
..SPalin barging around the remnants of what was once the Grand Old Party and busting up any fragments that still resemble a reasonable political alternative. Go Sarah!!
Margaret Carlson... a celebration of prideful ignorance. Meanwhile avoiding the real topics she is too comfortable to follow or too greedy to understand.

I'd hit that Margaret Carlson.
"Anyone that makes less than $150K in this country, has no business voting Republican."

Beat me to it.
Didn't mean to
With what?
Media consolidation had nothing to do with the item that started the discussion, which was the decision of one very unconsolidated newspaper to favor the visit of one Republican politician to New Hampshire over the visit of another.
Say, how were things covered in the unconsolidated, pre-entertainment era? When was that, by the way?
When I was just a lad ( and pretty grown up) we had three channels on TV. In my wife's town there was one. ( LBJ, the great liberal cited by commenters here regularly, controlled the license. There was only one newspaper owner then, too.)

Martini, with his doggie IQ, tends to follow shiny objects but even he has learned that is not always the best idea and ignores them when I say, "Martini, leave it!". Too bad the press and media news can't be as self controlled as this tiny dog.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

What is the ratio of conservatives to Dems/Progressives/Liberals asked to appear on TV /radio ?
Five-to-one or more ? That's simply unacceptable...................................
I wish Sarah Palin a nice, long, active life.
I'm a big fan of comedy, and I'd hate to see the comics run out of material!
Plus - if she upsets the Republican apple cart every time she draws the media away from their candidates - bonus!
CARLSON: Listen, we are always go going to follow the shiny object, so let's just give that up.
No, Margaret, I don't think so.
Nothing like being self-satisfied with mediocrity, incompetence and an absence of integrity. Of course, it would probably never occur to her to recognize that, how much less to ask herself why, the MSM is irrelevant. Look in the mirror Ms.Carlson.
and they seem proud of it. What a fucking whore.
This reminds me of all the "journalist" roundtables after it was discovered that there were no WMDs in Iraq and the media was complicit in the selling of the lie. They were all so astonished that it was able to happen, and were sure it would never happen again.
Yet, here we are. Excuse me if I don't expect anything to change going forward.
It is nice to see them admit they're witless hacks though, even if they'll do nothing to change their behaviors in the future beyond remaining witless hacks.
CORRECTION : It's not "who she is" it's who you all have made her. She was a nobody before the media got hold of her and she would be a forgotten failure if the media would just forget her again. Wouldn't it be great for her to get off her bus and not have a single camera there? Right now the serious Republican candidates are doing a nationwide search for the next Sarah Palin - albeit one that they hope they can have a bit more control over, just to steal the spotlight.
Won't happen though. She's a celebrity now like Lindsey Lohan and Paris Hilton. She's famous, not for being a popular politician, but just for being famous. And like Lindsey and Paris, she keeps herself famous by saying and doing really stupid things.
the media chooses to cover. It's all a diversion to keep from reporting the actual news, or do any investigative reporting, or make any attempt at all to explain how the general public is getting fucked over by the capitalists.
He was the asshole who deregulated the TV news. Once it became about profit and not news, we were put on the inevitable path to where we are now. Reality will always get stomped into the ground when the profit motive is introduced, and that's because most people in America don't give a rat's ass whether what they see as "news" is true or not. They just want to be entertained like a bunch of monkeys.

Can turn away from a good car crash. The messier the better. That's what you've got here with these two dipshits.
HA HA HA HA EVERONE IS A MORON HA HA HA WHEE ISN'T THAT FUNNY HA HA
Sweet jesus on a pogo stick, talk about shining the brass on Titanic.
You ass-hats in the media are the ones with degrees in journalism and are supposed to be professionals and ostensibly able to winnow the wheat from the chaff. So why are you 'following the shiny thing'? There is limited time and space to cover truly important and legitimate news, but time and again, we get the easy Bullshit and puff pieces.
Do your Fucking job or give it to someone who will. Don't give me that crap about giving people what they want. Are people emailing you and tweeting you begging for more Palin-Trump stories? I think not. You set the agenda. Start doing it right for a change.
...I CRAP bigger than you.
