Lou Dobbs is upset that a Latin television station wants to make people less afraid of census workers by including a plot line in one of their soap operas titled "Don't be afraid to be counted."

DOBBS: Well, fans--if you like that, you're going to love this. Fans of telenovellas on Spanish-language television could soon be seeing more than they tuned in for as well. The Telemundo network, owned by NBC, will incorporate a story line in a popular soap opera to promote the U.S. Census. That's right. They're going to put that into a storyline. It is part of an Obama administration plan to make sure the Latino population is fully counted next year. Ines Ferre with our report.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

INES FERRE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: When it comes to Latin television, no other genre is more popular with more viewers than steamy, plot-driven telenovellas, or soap operas. For the first time, a telenovella will include a plot line surrounding a U.S. Census message. "Don't be afraid to be counted." Telemundo's top soap opera "Mas Sabe el Diablo" or "The Devil Knows Best," will soon feature Michelle Vargas playing the role of a young Census Bureau recruiter.

DON BROWNE, PRESIDENT, TELEMUNDO: This character will live in the novella and basically be entertaining but educational, because education, empowering people with good, accurate information is really critical to the success of the Census.

FERRE: This is the first time that Telemundo and its Spanish- language competitors have partnered on a national level with the Census Bureau. Univision set up a toll-free number for questions and is planning a special program and heavy news coverage.

Government messages have aired on network programs before. Nancy Reagan appeared on "Diff'rent Strokes" to promote the "just say no to drugs" campaign. Michelle Obama recently taped a PSA for "Sesame Street." But one media critic says putting a government message in a telenovella is less transparent.

HOWARD KURTZ, HOST, "RELIABLE SOURCES": If Barack Obama or Michelle Obama or anybody else in the government wants to go on an entertainment show -- Leno, Letterman, even a soap opera -- and deliver a message, that's fine, because you know what you're getting. But if you're tuning into Telemundo and you're watching some soap opera that has a plot about a Census worker, you probably don't know that the U.S. government has had a hand in crafting that particular drama.

FERRE: Telemundo says it has total independent control of its program. With nearly 47 million Hispanics in the U.S., the Census has big political implications. Recently, Hispanics have tended to vote Democrat. The Census, as mandated by the Constitution, determines how many seats each state will get in the House, and how states draw up congressional districts. Every year, more than $400 billion are doled out based on Census data.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

FERRE: And the Census numbers are also important for the way TV households are sampled. The bigger the audience, the more ad revenue the networks can generate. Now, the Census Bureau says it plans to make ad buys on media outlets to get its message across, but as far as a telenovella character is concerned, the Census Bureau says it did not pay Telemundo any money, Lou, to put that character in there.

DOBBS: Well, it's an interesting business proposition. Why Telemundo -- they are a small, they are a relatively small player compared to, say, Univision.

FERRE: Right. Well, actually, Univision, they get their telenovellas canned from Mexico, from Telavisa. So they say they do not have any editorial control over...

DOBBS: They have no editorial control. They're just a distributor.

FERRE: ... the telenovellas.

DOBBS: All right. And how much money is this worth? Does anybody have an estimate for Telemundo?

FERRE: No, we do not have any estimate as far as how much money it could be worth.

DOBBS: All right, we will find out. Why not? The government is everywhere else, why not in a soap opera? That's -- he asked rhetorically.

Dang, now the wingnuts will have to learn how to spell "Federale" for chest writing purposes.

Correct. Spanish translation of Federal is ... Federal.

Tyler Durden's picture

the Census is mandated by the constitution. Somehow I find it ironic that the same sp*cks Mr. Dobbs hates so much, they seem to be more aware of the contents of the US constitution. So who is the "real" American now?

mnich13's picture

... but I think it's been taken to levels that are extremely intrusive and includes questions that the government, for purposes of making a count of the populations of the various states so that they are proportionally represented in Congress based on that population count, has no business asking.

roooth's picture

facts, please!

directly? If you make an accusation the burden of proof is on you, not on us to do your own homework.

But then I assume the red herring you were trying to pull wouldn't work.

I gave you the link, go look for yourself. It's not that hard, Tyler.

Tyler Durden's picture

... you managed to do both: completely not understand the point I was making, and at the same time prove said point. Truly a work of art IMHO.

mnich13's picture

I guess you'd best come out and tell me what point you were making so that dense folks like me will be sure to understand.

Tyler Durden's picture

... it would not hurt to tell us specifically what you find so objectionable from the data the census is requesting. I can't read your mind, and I don't have the time to comb through every single item in that website to try to guess what it is that you may object to.

I think that was already implied when I told you that the burden of proof resides on those making the accusations, not the other way around.

Is it still not clear enough? Or do you need a more basic approach of explanation?

mnich13's picture

... the sheer volume of data being collected, which you acknowledged by stating your unwillingness to have to go through all of the pdf files at the site I linked to.

Thanks for proving my point.

But it appears that the Census prople have come to their senses, and starting in 2010 they will no longer be asking questions that go beyond the purposes of the Constitutionally mandated census.

Hooray for actually sticking to the Constitution for a change.

calibre97's picture

(Before you delete site monitor, show some classic SNL some love!)

roooth very simply asked, "Like what? Facts please." and tyler followed up with "the burden of proof is on you".

Nowhere in those two statements is "copy entire PDF files ... full of questions and post them here". Nice straw man, though. A for effort there sparky.

Let's try 3, mmkay?

POST 3, as in THREE, or tres, questions that you object to. It's that simple.

mnich13's picture

Questions that used to be asked will no longer be asked, since the responsibility for asking the questions not mandated by the Constitution have been given to the "American Community Survey" people.

I've got no problem with that.

public transportation could be involved, oh ye of little imagination? You think this is unimportant? I disagree. Any others?

mnich13's picture

But it has no business being asked as part of the every-ten-years national census.

And public transportation is generally a matter for state and/or local authorities at any rate, not the Feds. Do Californians pay federal taxes to support bus service in Reno, Nevada or Kissimmee, Florida?

No, I don't think they do.

Revolution will not be televised's picture

According to the web page for John Ensign, the US senator from NV. Californians DO pay federal taxes to support bus service in reno, NV. In the form of a $1,000,000 grant request for, yup, bus service in reno, NV

"This will be the first stage of bus rapid transit in the heavily traveled Virginia Street corridor linking the UNR campus, downtown Reno, the convention center, and the Meadowood mall"

Nobody really cares what you think, so post facts please.

jerseyplannerguy's picture

Um, the Federal Transit Administration provides most (sometimes all) of the funds used to pay for transit capital like buses, trains, stations, etc. Transit operations are paid by local authorities (and sometimes also by Federal sources), and transit fares usually cover only half of the operating expenses and none of the capital expenses. This is why the Census questions about employment locations are needed

You need to learn what the census is used for, its far more than just Congressional representation. Read the information present on the site you posted here.

But then again, you could have done that already, so I may just come to my own conclusions without further study and make the hyperbolic statement that you are an idiot.

Is it true?

See how that works?

... show me where the census people get their authorization to go beyond this:

Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons. The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by law Direct.

Questions about my income, my education level, the number of bathrooms in my house, etc., etc., have nothing to do with what the Constitution authorizes the census to count and the reason for that counting.

The following comes from http://2010.census.gov/2010census/about_2010_...

2010 Census is Different
The Census Bureau has changed the way it conducts the national count.

Goodbye Long Form

In the past, most households received a short-form questionnaire, while one household in six received a long form that contained additional questions and provided more detailed socioeconomic information about the population.

The 2010 Census will be a short-form only census and will count all residents living in the United States as well as ask for name, sex, age, date of birth, race, ethnicity, relationship and housing tenure – taking just minutes to complete.

The more detailed socioeconomic information is now collected through the American Community Survey. The survey provides current data about your community every year, rather than once every 10 years. It is sent to a small percentage of the population on a rotating basis throughout the decade. No household will receive the survey more often than once every five years.

View more information on the American Community Survey.

A similar survey, the Puerto Rico Community Survey is conducted in Puerto Rico.

Now that we don't even know that if in fact the report of the marking on his chest was true? That that information was given by an anonymous source. That police aren't even sure it was a murder now a full two weeks after the incident?

Why would Dobbs want to embarrass himself and report on something that no one knows anything about?

Do you want this to be true and linked back to anti-Census rhetoric by 'GOP's and Michelle Bachmann's' so bad that it wouldn't bother you to have to admit that you not only jumped to a very quick conclusion, but even after it was announced that there was misinformation given on the reports late yesterday, you still want someone like Dobbs to do a segment on it?

denis? This is going to be another question that you fail to answer, isn't it? Do you actually believe that after two weeks in the medical examiner's office, they don't know the cause of death? How is it that they have determined that the time of death was September 11th, one day before the body was found? Why did they encourage the victim's mother to cremate his body because it is so decomposed if the time of death was the day before they found the body? Did someone leave it in the back of their cop car for a week or so? Why is the MSM coming out with so many conflicting stories about how the body was positioned when it was found. Are you in any way capable of critical thinking, or are you just programed to spew anti-thinking GOP crap? Huh, denis?

Dobbs believes that all people of color should only be counted as 3/5 of a person.

ysbaddaden's picture
)O(

The funny thing is the southern states wanted to count them as full persons, because a higher count would mean more representation etc., and the Northern States didn't want them counted at all, so the 3/5 was a compromise.

Aryan is a misnomer, because it's a group of languages, best typified now by Farsi.

Scholars did use it at one time to refer to very early migratory groups in Europe, probably due to the mistaken idea that Sanskrit was an Aryan language, and seeing all other languages as being decendents of Sanscrit. Since then the term Indo-European has been a replacement. But the scholars didn't think of it as a race per se, although some might of like the early 20th century German occultic writers, who seemed to have borrowed for Helene Petrovna Blavatsky's rather Watchtowers approach of Atlantian, Lemurian, Hyperborean and Aryan.

But I hate being called Anglo. If I think of myself as anything it's Celt. And if anyone who speaks English regardless of background is an Anglo, than Ricky Ricardo must be an Anglo.

Diabolus est Deus Inversus

Tyler Durden's picture

The aryans were indeed an early racial group, not just a language group. In fact the aryans predate indo-European languages.

A migratory branch of the Arians went West, and they became the Caucasians. And the other branch went East settling mainly in India.

liberalNmoderation's picture

whitey!
HA!

fiver's picture

... but guys like Dobbs seem to have little problem equating "Aryan" with "white." I realize though - having descended from those islands - that I probably am a mix of all of it whether I like it or not.

There were the Scots - who kept the sabbath and anything else they could lay their hands on.

The Irish were willing to fight - for nothing in particular.

The Welsh prayed upon their knees and preyed upon their neighbors.

And the English, who claimed to be a self-made race - thus absolving the almighty of a horrible responsibility.

I spell it Celt, but pronounce it Kelt, which seems derived from the Roman Keltoi.

The Celts themselves may have not originally saw beyond their clan. However in times like Vercingetorix against the Romans, and the legendary King Arthur's struggles against the Saxons, some nationalism may have arisen.

I'm not sure when the Sassanach starting whomping on the Irish, but for the Scots it was after the failed Jacobin uprising. For some reason I don't understand, the Anglican/Presbyterian Scots fought to restore the Catholic Kings with James II to Britain. It may've been because the Stuart kings of Britain were actually originally from Scotland. King James I of Britain was originally King James VI of Scotland.

(For some reason when the Stuarts took over Scotland they made everyone use their tartan and coat of arms, except my family. No explanation was ever given, other than they "respected us.")

But after the Protestant William of Orange won the day, a line was added to the coronation oath denouncing transubstantiation, which they're debating about removing now. Then the Sassanach didn't just whomp on the Scots, but killed them for little more than wearing kilts, speaking their own language and playing bagpipes.

And much of my ancestory is actually Pict.

Most of us find it funny to see questions about whether or not there is a toilet in the house, but we still have areas of abject poverty in this country, and areas where basic city services are not available. The Census helps point them out.

Has its use been expanded from simply counting people in order to gerrymander districts? Sure, but those expansions help the Feds to do their Constitutionally mandated tasks of regulating interstate commerece and maintaining the general welfare.

However, if Telemundo, without Government sponsorship, wants to promote a pro-Census stance that reflects the politics of the Producers and openly announces they are writing it into the script for Spanish-speaking entertainment, that is known as free speech -- much like any prime-time American TV drama that portrays pro-Gay rights or the hidden crimes of poverty. Lou Birther Man Dobbs is a slob.

Let's get a poll going for which talking head dies on the air? Lou could squirt, he's obese. Beck's obese and he gets his veins popping pretty well. O'rally is on meds, but if someone sandbagged him on the air, he could gush yellow matter custard. Limbaugh, morbidly obese, tweaked out on uppers and downers, and if he had guests to argue with, oh boy.
Because that is what they want of us, that is why. They want to kill us because it is in their financial interest to defeat anything that might affect their incomes. They are not able to appear in any debate setting, because they are using pretend facts and data for everything they have claimed since 2001. The bloodletting would be appreciated for those millions now dead, dying, injured and maimed, lost, and insane from a war they make their living on.
Suicide by television. Murka's way.

they would openly welcome debate. Truth will stand up to anything, right? They are purposeful liars.

While they're at it, I wish that they'd encourage gaining citizenship and voting

for sane people.

Couldn't sleep, so at about 4am I watched a report on ABC News about border guards taking bribes to allow illegal entry.

What really struck me though, was this:

In the last two years, the government says 2,285 illegal immigrants have been caught coming from China, nearly 1,000 from Europe, and hundreds from nations where terrorism is a major concern -- 80 from Pakistan, 10 from Afghanistan, 36 from Somalia, 19 from Yemen, 25 from Iraq, and 26 from Iran.

Lou should check it out. ;o}

I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the republic which it established, one nation from many peoples, promising liberty and justice for all

years, I can tell you that the makers of these novelas rountinely incorporate social messages into their storylines. A recent one, Las Tontas No Van al Cielo, that wrapped up not too long ago had a pro-safe sex message as part of their storyline of a teenage boy contracting HIV. And there have been many others.

Dobbs is an imbecile!

I've never seen change without a fire

Yes, Dobbs' show is a product of his own imagination. Hideous and depraved as it is...

novela census campaign is part of some evil conspiracy to help with the non-existent "Reconquista."

I'm so ashamed of this low life and anyone who subscribes to his twisted mentality.

I've lost any respect I might ever have had for this pig.

Ya, it's the Lou Birthers Dobbs show, featuring Lou Dobbs, and the daily belly aching of Lou Birther Dobbs.

In the forties the American countries had what was called the Good Neighbor Policy. Specifically, Disney was instrumental in making films that appealed to understanding between the U.S. and hispanic cultures (Three Caballeros, etc.). Some of these, during the war years, were short films describing basic things like how to grow a garden. I don't know specifically how it was funded (i.e. whether Disney volunteered to make the films or was forced to), but it's clear that the U.S. government was the financier. Some of these films carried the Disney logo at the beginning, some said they were from the U.S. government. The point was to build and enrich the global community.

Dobbs and his ilk will find anything to complain about. He's got hours every day to fill, and a tiny little mind inside a huge, cavernous head, to come up with anything that might create outrage among his audience. I'm all for anything that will count the total population of our country. If the government wants to sponsor or promote that, that's a good use of my tax dollars. Now, what's LD got to say about warrantless wiretapping? That's still going on. Is he yammering away about that?

Gee, I'd just love to see Beck and Dobbs going after the hispanics' favorite television network. Maybe they could line up Tom Tancredo for backup.

Bottom line. Republicans hate hispanics, unless they vote Republican (which explains their love affair with the aging right-wing Cuban-Americans). Heck, they hate all ethnic minorities....

Um, Almost all public transit funding is federally distributed. It comes from the Federal Transit Administration and is used to pay for equipment (buses, trains, stations, etc.). Transit operations are paid by local authorities (and sometimes also by Federal sources), and transit fares usually cover only half of the operating expenses and none of the capital expenses. This is why the Census questions about employment locations are needed.

Lou 'Acorn' Dobbs should be shilling to de-fund Blackwater - Ze, Lockheed Martin, to name just two. These guys are always defrauding the government so they will have to go if Acorn goes!

Lou Dobbs is a witch hunter! A middle ages down town clown.

Plus Lou Dobbs is a political hack. Quite a load of shit stuffed into that shirt.

Witch hunting was more in the period of the Renaissance.

It was primarily sparked by Pope Innocent VIII with his Summis Desiderantes Affectibus in 1484.
