John Amato:
If you live in LA then please join me and a host of bloggers to hear David Neiwert talk about his explosive new book (and a timely one I might add) The Eliminationists: How The Eliminationists: How Hate Talk Radicalized the American Right.
There are rare moments in time when an author is in sync with the political surroundings that in habits our culture, but Neiwert is right on the mark.
There times when a writer publishes a book at exactly the right moment and this is one of them. With violent mainstream rhetoric hitting peaks we haven't seen in nearly 40 years, the village is struggling to comprehend where it's all coming from and what it means. They haven't been paying attention. And because of that there are many people out in the country who are shocked by it too.
Here's the info:
Date: Tuesday, September 1st
Time: There will be a reception at 6 pm. The program will begin promptly at 6:30 pm.
Note: Please be aware that they are filming this event so the studio door will be shut at 6:30 pm sharp.

I'll be hosting it and leading the Q&A section so be there or be square.
Heather: If you're not in LA for the BNF event---here's our own David Neiwert on I believe Jon Elliot's show talking about the theme of his new book, The Eliminationists.
Dave N.: A brief promotional plug. I'll be in California this week, putting in an invitational appearance at Brave New Films in Culver City on Tuesday. I'll also be in the Bay Area on Thursday, Sept. 3, speaking at 7:30 p.m. at Books Inc. in Mountain View. If you live in the area, hope to see you there.

What can another liberal say but "right on." The "hate" and "intolerance" in the U.S. is getting me very worried for our future. We need to stop the hate and teach tolerance.
The only thing Mr. Neiwert didn't do on this You tube video was trace the amount of "money" that is behind all of the hate talk. There is an incredible amount of rich people, to include Rupert Murdoch and the entire Health Care Industry, that is throwing billions to create fear and hate talk. How do you fight their manipulation of events by using hate speech when the left doesn't have that kind of money? The left doesn't seem to have billions to throw at "teaching America tolerance."
I think "rich people" agreed to pretend to split into two groups for public consumption. The party out of power always capitulates on the key votes that ultimately give the government more power, that way the 'rich people' always win. It's a rigged game, like pro wrestling.
and conquer!
...govts have been doing it for centuries.
"socialize" . . . . . tweet
you got that right!
...I think "rich people" agreed to pretend to split into two groups for public consumption. The party out of power always capitulates on the key votes that ultimately give the government more power, that way the 'rich people' always win. It's a rigged game, like pro wrestling....
Yes apica. Now if we could just get the righties to realize that it is big money that IS "the government" that is stealing all their money maybe we could all make he government something that represented the people.
I always get a good laugh out of the ones that say government could never run things as good as private business. First, with the track record of private business that isn't setting a very high bar and second and most importantly...They're the same people!!!! Investigate.
But I can only be there in spirit - too far from home.
I WISH I could make it.
Sounds very RIGHT ON!
This is much more than just hate talk. There is an underlying current of racism in right-wing world. They may deny racism in public but when I read the emails from my family and others from the right, it is full of overt racism. They just cant handle a non-white person in the White House and it is driving them nuts.
a globalist backed, foundation funded, slick Harvard trained lawyer who is in the pocket of big business, and who does not keep his word on any promise that he makes, and who seamlessly carries on the Bush administration agenda, and who consolidates the gains made by them in taking away our liberties and increasing the size and power of government.
I think thats probably what most people who don't like Obama have a problem with, rather than his race.
You registered a few moments ago, accuse David of conspiracy, and now you deny that racism is major factor with right wing activists!
I did not accuse David of anything, and I did not deny anything about racism, I simple said that I think most people that disagree with Obama is because of his policies and actions, not because of his race. Do you disagree with that?
accusations, and apparently so covert, you yourself are unaware of the attack.
It's in your questioning, the accusatory tone they take.
then I am accusing someone, but if I don't make accusations, then I am accusing them covertly?
Yale, whose grades were bought and paid for, was a drunk, married to a woman who killed her boyfriend, squandered every business he was ever in charge of, allowed the country to be attacked, squandered our budget surplus into the hugest deficit ever, started two non sequitur wars and killed thousands US and Coalition troops, murdered millions in Iraq and Afghanistan, who lied, did not do his duty as president and totally fucked up the world?
Because, while you denigrate a guy who had to work twice as hard to be considered half as good with lies, it sounds like you prefer Bush's Endtimes and Rapture world.
as Obama, they are both puppets of the same 'rich people' that gypsykat spoke about in the first post.
gb2 prison planet
aren't you the concern troll, apica?! Off you go... toddle off to the land of stupidity and fantasy where you can pretend that what you have to say is rational and even meaningful. In other words, effoff!

Also, in the 5 stages of grief:
We had Denial and are in the midsts of Anger. That part is quite clear.
I wonder if we will ever make it to Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance.
Why doesn't anyone ever come to Florida? I always have to miss all the good stuff.
You want to see how ugly it can get, hop over to Kos and see what the guy, who was seen carrying the big gun and the hand gun, has to say about Obama. It will send cold chills down your spine. Basically the guy says he doesn't care how god does it, he just wants him to take Obama's life.
if he'd stay at home and talk about it...
:P
The fact that this book is so in tune with what the MSM tells us is going on right now, and so prescient, could this be due to some connections of the author, or just a wild coincidence?
Perhaps Neiwert is simply a keen observer and documenter of what IS all around us. I know, actual journalism is such a lost art that we don't recognize it anymore.
or is it just hyped-up by the MSM, and we are lead to believe there is some huge problem with racism in America, they have to talk about it every five minutes, and call criticism, racism?
AND I notice, while I pointed out, he's been writing about this for 10 years now, you want to insist he just jumped on the bandwagon.
Which right wing site is giving you your talking points?
Am aware of his work. Point is there is a certain group in our society that benefits by pitting one race against the other, playing one group off against another, and perpetuation of the perception of racial and class strife. Perhaps his book publishers and ultimate paymasters are trying to further this agenda. I dont' visit any right wing sites or get talking points from anyone.
Have you followed Neiwert's work? He's been writing about this subject, long before it was popular

It's really hard to google a name and see what they've been up to, check on their cred. I have some fresh baked crow, right out of the oven for you.
I don't think there is a need to attack me.
No answers? We know that trick on this site
Please note that pointing out facts does not constitute an attack in the real world. We know it does where you come from, we see it on Drugbo and Mannity and Beck and Billo all the time.

and well done!
a giant conspiracy theory to me! /snark
Because, there has got to be some conspiracies that are true, I dont think they all can be crazy.
Does anyone know, or can the author tell us, what his affiliation with the Southern Poverty Law Center is?
What is your problem?
or anyone, and I don't have a problem. I would just like to know if there is any connection to the SPLC.
What difference would it make to you?
SPLC's activities concerning this subject.

You came to this site, and signed up to shit stir.
We could use some excitement around here.
So what if there is?
Mr. Neiwert can correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the extent of his affiliation with SPLC is that he has an affinity with them because their work and his have so much overlap. There is no formal affiliation between them.
any research you would know that La Raza has many different meanings. Good bye.
You are repeating a Tancredo talking point? That is not their motto. It was an attack talking point dreamed up by Tancredo.

.
I wish I had more than a 1 day notice. Would love to be there.
Wish I could be there.
last week, and believe me, you need to read it. It is a frightening detailing of the right wing wackos and what motivates them along with some interesting discussions of fascism. A truly essential book.
baby jesus would be all over this event,
but baby jesus is busy working on world disasters and whispering in Sarah's ear.
When baby jesus took a dump, did it sound like the song of angels and the scent of aromatic oil?
Bravo and well done David. Clear. Easy listening, and undeniable (For rational folks that is).
Seriously... excellently done. Thank-you.
My feelings exactly, Seige.
David and C&L, I'll be there with you in spirit!
Why don't we call it what it is.....white trash-ism or stupid people-ism
It ain't "hate speech", though it's on the same road....just more GOP stupidity, caught at a town hall (and kudos to the guy doing the taping (?) and his reaction to what he hears)....

For the first time this decade, however, such rhetoric fell flat with the voting public. Polls taken in the wake of the McCain campaign's incendiary appeals made clear that, while such talk clearly energized his Republican base, it turned off independent and undecided voters. What particularly bothered voters was not just the rhetoric and its failure to address the serious issues before them (particularly the faltering economy), but the ugly behavior that emanated from it: the threats and shouts of "terrorist" during Republican rallies, the open expressions of racism outside them.
The McCain campaign scaled back its rhetoric; but the forces unleashed were not so easy to put back in a bottle. News reports rolled in of ugly incidents of vandalism, threats, and other acts of intimidation directed at Obama supporters. One McCain campaign worker even tried to claim she had been robbed and assaulted by a black Obama supporter who carved a `B" into her cheek with a knife, and campaign officials ran to promote this racially incendiary tale to the press; a day later, she admitted that it was all a hoax.
This is the real danger of para-fascism: once certain forces are unleashed, they often take on a life of their own and prove impossible to contain. If enough of the natural barriers that keep fascism at bay in a democratic society break down, then the half-formed Hologram of fascism takes on substance and becomes the real thing. This is the danger movement conservatism has unleashed on America.
As America moves forward amid the reality of a President Obama, it may want to brace itself for a spate of domestic terrorism and homegrown violence. Because even before Obama's election, it was clear that some of the more violence-prone sectors of the Far Right were winding themselves up for just such an eventuality.
The prospect of an Obama presidency sent the racist Right into a frenzy as early as June 2007, when a Klan leader from Indiana named Ray Larsen promised that he would be assassinated before taking office. Things reached a fever pitch by the summer of 2008. On the Web, white supremacists were speculating wildly about what it meant to their movement.
Three white supremacists, reportedly plotting to assassinate Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August, were caught a week before (though they were not charged with engaging in the plot). A week before the election, two neo Nazi skinheads were arrested in Tennessee, charged with plotting to assassinate Obama at the culmination of a killing spree in which 102 black people were to be killed.
Earlier that summer, a 60-year-old militiaman named Bradley T. Kahle of Troutville, Pennsylvania, was arrested along with four other Patriots for plotting to attack local government buildings. The FBI confiscated hundreds of weapons, including hunting rifles, cannons, homemade bombs, and rudimentary rockets. Before the bust, Kahle told undercover agents "words to the effect of, that `if Hillary Clinton, or Barack Obama, get elected, hopefully they will get assassinated, if not they will disarm the country and we will have a civil war," according to their arrest affidavit.
--David Neiwert (chap.7 pp.140-141)
Please, recognize that we're "all bozos on this bus"! We cannot exit this planet at the next galaxy, so we must inevitably learn to live together, or continue to sacrifice ourselves and our young people in unwarranted "wars" that benefit only the wealthiest among us.
Please, please, please, recognize that promoting fear, hate and divisiveness of any kind will never result in anything positive. Reject your fear. Let go your hate.
“You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else?" (Matthew 5:43-47) [Do not mistake my use of this quote as an adjuration to embrace some specific organized religion--just listen to the words, which are timeless and universal.]
Gandhi, King, Dalai Lama--these great pacifists and others like them give excellent examples of effective responses to 'hatemongering' and fear. One doesn't need to wear rose-colored glasses to recognize that love is the most effective palliative in these trying times. Love can also help those who aspire to effective pacifism to accept that those who hate or fear are the only ones who can find their personal path to peaceful membership in our Global Family.
Personally, I pray for patience and acceptance, because so many of the Angry Group (tyvm Dana Gould) really push my hate buttons. But, I have far too many friends and family who are Republicans. I find myself challenged almost daily to address or refute their fears, their ignorance and their resentments without causing cognitive dissonance, or further hate and fear. Love, diplomacy, compassion, and pacifism are the only approaches I've found that help me weasel a wee bit of light into the darkest corners of their minds.
I had a lengthy conversation with one of my Republican friends just yesterday. The main topic of our chat was health care reform. I first had to remind my friend of my pacifism--he knows that I do not appreciate hearing hateful talk about anyone, regardless of party affiliation, etc.--because he started our conversation with disparaging remarks about Obama and 'the Democrats' who are shoving cost-prohibitive health care down our throats.
Once I redirected his bile, he started to regurgitate insupportable talking points. I began asking him in-depth questions about each of his points--questions that required that he validate each point and provide verifiable facts in support of his assertions. He quite rapidly devolved into, "Well, I'm not much of a debater... I just know this is what I believe."
Then, I switched gears and asked him what kind of plan he would like to see implemented. He had no idea what reforms have been promoted thus far, and could not offer any suggestions of his own. After a few moments of silence, he asserted that he's "just tired of big government."
The Corporatists are keenly aware of the efficacy of targeting their audiences' baser emotions. They know how to use hateful propaganda to further their goals and to entrench their supporters in solid opposition to whatever group is perceived as the most threatening.
It doesn't help our species to point out that this is fascism, or to make any other pejorative observations about this pathetic group of fearful and hateful human beings. It is up to those of us who are committed to peace and spiritual progress to find ways to break through the bigotry, and to communicate effectively. God knows the Eliminationists are not going to make this effort.
I'm not saying we should ignore the hatemongers, or allow them to continue to spill their bile. Barney Franks recently illustrated how to actively refute some of the most ridiculous assertions. We have had some commendable success in addressing Glenn Beck's most recent gradoo. But, these are small, isolated victories, and we cannot rest. As frustrating as it often is, WE must take the high road, and do the hard work required to get our species to the other side of this abyss.
Thank you for contacting The Dannon Company regarding the television program Glenn Beck in which our advertising appeared recently. I can assure you we share your concerns about the quality and appropriateness of programming. We do all that we can to ensure that it meets Dannon standards.
As you may know, companies like Dannon typically purchase advertising "rotations" throughout a network's or station's scheduled programming. And although we work diligently through our advertising agency to avoid inappropriate programming, on occasion our safeguards are inadequate. For us, that is an indication that we must redouble our efforts in this regard, and we will.
We are committed to participating in programs that reflect the high quality of our products. That is our directive to our advertising agency, and it is not negotiable.
Once again, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us on this important matter. You can be sure we value your comments and we hope in the future that we can count you as a consumer of Dannon products.
Sincerely,
Lisa Moore
