Howard Dean to Mary Landrieu: You Forced Us Into the Insurance Industry
At the end of separate interviews on Hardball, Chris Matthews gives Howard Dean a chance to respond to Mary Landrieu's statements and he comes at her hard for forcing everyone into private insurance by not allowing other choices in the bill. I'd call that a smack down for sure.

Sen. Landrieu drones on and on about her blind love and devotion to the insurance industry that has been a nightmare for many Americans. Why does she hate the idea that Americans deserve to have a choice about who they buy their health care from?
Dean: Mary, I'd like to know why you deny my people of the choice to sign up for an alternative? You are forcing us in to insurance companies. You took away our choice.
You would not let us choose another program. You forced us into the insurance industry and we don't want to be forced into the insurance industry and you took away our choice. That is wrong.

If you'd been paying attention, you would have known, for example, about his vote for retroactively legalizing spying on American citizens, including giving immunity to complicit telecom companies; his unwavering support for no-strings war-funding bills; his playing head cheerleader for the Bush-Paulson Wall Street Giveaway, which was so bad that not only did real liberal/ progressive Congress members reject it, but Republicans broke their lock-step marching with Bush to fight against. (Okay, that last one came a little late to influence the primary - but did it fill you with foreboding, or did you just let him slide on it?)
Obama spent his time in the Senate supporting horrendous things - then lied, and lied, and lied on the campaign trail. The real question is, How did so many fall for his obvious lies? His campaign itself was based on his breaking a promise to the voters of Illinois.
Some of my fellow Illinoisans seemed able to forget that he promised that, if elected to the Senate, he would serve his entire term, no matter how good a run for the White House might look. And no one seemed to find that a strange question, when a reporter asked him following his keynote speech in 2003. (I spent several unbelieving seconds just staring at the television.) This guy was a real nobody: hadn't yet been elected to the US Congress, never held a governorship...
In old-fashioned terms, you were speechified. Next time around, read campaign speeches. You'll avoid being swayed by cheering fans and pretty-but-empty words.

I was screaming at my TV watching Matthews pushing his "gotcha," "edgy," "hardball," angle by beating Howard Dean up over the idea that reconciliation had never been used to start a big government program and that it would "blow up the Senate" if they used it.
All the while Matthews was talking about the "reality" of needing 60 votes in the Senate like it is a constitutional mandate. Mathews seems to conveniently forget that the current abuse of the filibuster rules has already "blown up the Senate" and a creative use of reconciliation is simply a way to bring some sanity to the insane tyranny of the minority that ill conceived rule changes have brought.
Emanuel have told Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi that he doesn't want a public option , Medicare for all or anything which the health and drug companies have stated not to be in this piece of sh..
Because Harry Reid could as Dean stated use the reconciliation to get just 51 votes as BUSH and the republicans did to pass their tax cuts for the Wealthy which has help to destroy our economy..
Obama could also repel the tax cuts to help our economy but again Corporate republican Obama will not do this..

When you have people like Landrieu, Nelson, Carper, Lincoln, & Lieberman, who are essentially Reublican's who use their status as Democrats as leverage for bargaining power for corporate America, it makes the Democrats weaker in a sense than when they are the minority. In essence, these guys would be more liberal if they were out of power because they need to be in power to be a schill.
The proof is in the pudding. There is no way there wil be a public option or medicare 50 unless they pass reconciliation, and the only way they would be able to do that is if Obama expended all of his capital, which there is no way he will.
Hence, I hope the Dems lose in 10, it wakes Obama up, he gets rid of top Dog Blue Dog (Rahm) for a 2nd term (if we wins) and he starts getting a some progressive shit done.

He wouldn't use it against Republicans. What happens if a combination of Republicans and progressive Democrats in the Senate oppose the bill, and their numbers are more than 40 (so they could potentially stop the bill through filibuster) but less than 51 (so they couldn't defeat the bill in a straight up or down vote)? My bet is that Reid would then turn the weapon on his own party that he was too afraid of using against the opposing party.

The alternative: a few more years of insurance rates increasing on a power curve _anyway_. Years of people dying anyway. Years of clogged emergency rooms anyway.
On the other hand, by passing a mandate for universal private insurance, the fools we have for congressmen will have militarized 40 million Americans against the government by tangibly hurting them. It's a gamble. Look at Medicare Part D. Where did the revision to import competitive cheap drugs go? But this is different. The elderly were easy game to feed upon. They won't be rioting in the streets around congress. But the young poor aren't old and infirm.
We've heard assurances, even from progressives like Ed Schulz, that universal private insurance won't be a problem for the poor. The government will pay for their premium. What could go wrong with that? When has the federal government ever passed an unfunded mandate? No, anyone with half a brain cell _knows_ this will hurt the poor. Congressmen may still harbor the Reagan era snottiness that every person making eight dollars an hour has plenty of spare change for plasma TVs and mag wheels so they better get responsible and start paying for their own health care. Bull. Utter fantasy. This will genuinely hurt. Enough I'm gauging to militarize a significant percentage of Americans to take action against the government and force _real_ change.

according to the healthcare industry, they're only working on a 1% profit margin. They figure this by using the entire cost of healthcare as a whole. Their profits (based on money spent vs money taken in) are still quite low, anywhere from 2%-6% but it's based on a couple trillion dollars, more if they institute a mandate so the actual cash amount is staggering.
The other obvious problem with the non-profit line, is that they simply inflate their overhead with inflated marketing and salary costs. This is a case of putting the wolf in charge of running the hen house and Dean is right, this has disastrous implications for the future. I hope they don't even pass the bill. If this goes through, employers will drop their insurance contributions to employees or offer a lower cost plan. Republicans are going to run with this fiasco come election time.
Chris Matthews was obviously trying to discredit Dean, it was clear that Matthew's overly aggressive interrogation of Dean was based strictly on the WH talking points Gibbs sent over. Chris, you need to go to a couple of these free health care clinics that Olbermann is supporting. One was held in Landrieu's state and they treated thousands of her constituents that are without insurance. She was invited to attend the event but turned down the invitation. She probably didn't want to be in the position where she would have to explain to all those sick people why she takes millions from special interest and fought so hard against the public option.
