Greta Van Susteren asks Michael Steele the question that should be asked of Republicans every time they claim they really care about "reforming" health care/insurance. Why didn't your reform it when you had control of the House, the Senate and the White House? Of course she forgets that we did get the Republicans idea of health care reform when they were in charge, with the giveaway to the big pharma in the form of Medicare Part D.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right, what is this "bill of rights" that you've unleashed? And -- well, let me just start there. What is this "bill of rights"?

STEELE: Well, the "bill of rights" is really kind of a placeholder as we begin the fall discussion on health care. We watched at the beginning of the spring and summer the administration say we were going to have a health care bill by July 31 with no real input or discussion by the American people, let alone the Republican members of Congress. They were going to try to get it done by then. We raised some concerns and we talked a little bit more about it and laid out clearly what we thought we should be doing.

Town halls began to take place as citizens began to get ahold of it. And in the process of this discussion, the one thing that struck me that was being left behind was our seniors. When the administration's kind of slipped out there the idea of cutting $500 billion from the Medicare program with no indication of whether that's going to be cutting waste or if that's going to be cutting the substance of programs or what that was, I thought it would be appropriate to put a placemaker out here to very clearly delineate what we should be doing and how we should be doing it on behalf of the seniors as we begin this debate in the fall.

So I wanted to lay out about six principles that kind of talked about the -- you know, the doctor-patient relationship, the role of government, the decision-making process involving seniors or their caregivers, and I wanted to be as fairly clear as I could about it.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right, but this -- so this is not an exact answer to the 1,500-page bill that the Democrats have put forward. This is sort of just your principles of how you and the Republican Party would like to see things proceed, so just broad-based principles, right?

STEELE: It's broad-based principles and -- and the Republican leadership in the House and the Senate will come back with the legislative, you know, bills and amendments to the HR 3200 or whichever bill the House and Senate are going to be working on, to put into law those guidelines or those protections, if you will, for our seniors.

VAN SUSTEREN: Are the Republicans sort of sitting back, waiting to see what the Democratic bill is so they can then punch some holes in it or rewrite it, or are they -- or are they writing their own, saying, Look, scrap the Democrats. This is the bill we should have.

STEELE: Well, I think -- well, this is -- that's a very good question, Greta, and I'll tell you why, because between the House and the Senate, there have been over 800 pieces of legislation and amendments to various bills introduced by Democrats in the House and the Senate that have been rejected outright. So they've tried that, writing the bill, if you will, or putting their input into the documents that have been produced, and it has all been rejected.

So I think in this instance, what I thought was, Let's put a placemarker in place, then let's just follow back up. And now that the rhetoric has heated up from the American people, maybe the House leadership will pay attention to what Republicans want to put on the table because, quite frankly, I'm sick and tired of all this conversation about all bipartisanship and bipartisanship that, when, in fact, the House and Senate leadership are not doing anything to bring Republicans to the table in any meaningful way, and the president is giving lip service to this idea, when he's not encouraging, and in fact, demanding that we work together in bipartisan fashion on this problem.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right. Now, I understand that a lot of Republicans want reform. In fact, most have said some reform is needed. I understand that they don't like the public option, or the government option. I understand that they say there's no bipartisanship. But can you sort of, you know -- you know, bring me in on the secret why the Republicans didn't do health care reform when they owned the House, the Senate and the White House? Do you have any idea?

STEELE: No, I don't have an idea, and I think, you know, again, it's one of those -- those flaws of the past that, you know, we tripped ourselves up on. We had a perfect opportunity even when we didn't have control of the House and Senate during the early days of the Bush -- of Bush first term to at least put in place some of the -- some of the efforts to put, you know, our imprimatur, if you will, on the health care debate.

But that's the past. And I understand that. I'm now the new chairman of the party. We've got, you know, leadership in the House and the Senate that we're working with. We've got governors around the country who deal with this health care issue every single day, from Mississippi to Indiana to Louisiana. They're fighting to try to balance those budgets with the cost of health care escalating. And so now is an opportunity for us to engage in a genuine way.

I will applaud the administration for putting this on the table. What I do not applaud is the way they want to go about reforming our health care system when, in fact, the parts that they want to reform and don't need it, and the parts like Medicare that do need to be addressed, they're kind of slipping off to the side because everyone knows there's no money here, Greta, in about six or seven years. And so with all this spending now, where will the money come from to deal for our seniors in about six years when there is no money for Medicare?

Americans have been INPUTTING on health care for 40 years and longer. Insurance companies didn't just start overcharging and cutting people off last January. AND Republicans DID do health care in 1996. They CUT the safety net for those they allowed to keep it by time limits and eliminated Medicaid for millions of sick adults. Just like their solution for millions of lost JOBS is to CUT unemployment benefits, their solution for loss of health care and for sick adults without health care is to increase the profits of the same CEOs who have sentenced millions to DEATH and let them continue their predatory practices.
They have come right out in PUBLIC and stated unequivocally that they DO NOT WANT everyone to have health care BECAUSE it might cause a little INCONVENIENCE for them. They might have to use the waiting room with "inferior" peons or go into an examining room after one of THEM, sit on the same examination table and "contaminate" their $3000 suit or designer dress.
The ONLY thing Republicrats care about is war, death of others, destruction of any country and it's people who don't fall into their Religious circle of fanatics AND they don't want to give up the INTERFERENCE between WOMEN and their Doctors that they've been practicing for YEARS.

was obstructionist is purely idiotic.

Precisely BECAUSE a national single payer health care plan was NOT implemented is why we are in such crises today.

If we would have followed his advice 38 years ago, we would not keep getting our asses kicked in nearly every area of social and production indicators by the rest of the world.

A healthy society is a productive society - productive educationally, economically, and politically.

ANYBODY who says we are rushing into this too fast is LYING or so woefully misinformed that they add nothing to the debate.

We have been waiting to catch up to the rest of the world for decades and decades and decades.

The republican plan then is the republican plan now. Ignore the facts that national health care works, can be funded and after a little economic pain to begin with can help our nation flourish.

Instead of that - we have the same tired ideals of the free market solving everything when based on our position throughout the world would prove otherwise.

The best "system" is a mix of many different ideologies. For health care, each contributing some for the good of all is the best for the long term strength of a nation.

Ronald Reagan: “[I]f you don’t [stop Medicare] and I don’t do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free.” [1961][53]

George H.W. Bush: Described Medicare in 1964 as “socialized medicine.” [1964][54]

Barry Goldwater: “Having given our pensioners their medical care in kind, why not food baskets, why not public housing accommodations, why not vacation resorts, why not a ration of cigarettes for those who smoke and of beer for those who drink.” [1964][55]

Bob Dole: In 1996, while running for the presidency, Dole stated that he was one of 12 House members who voted against creating Medicare in 1965. “I was there, fighting the fight, voting against Medicare ... because we knew it wouldn’t work in 1965.” [1992][56]

In my mind Democrats should have taken action based on Goldwater's prediction. I would like my ration of beer and smoke.

He might as well have said, Well we felt the people wanted the health care reform the Obama administration offered so we stirred up a bunch of crazy people to raise hell and delay any progress as long as possible. I think anytime a political party gets a measure of full control, as opposed to the checks and balances, you will immediately see where their true allegiance lies, in the laws that they rush through while they have the clout.

In the case of Tony Blairs new labour, when they had unprecedented power in the House of Commons, the way they screwed over the populace was a real indication to anyone watching that they were going to be the party of pro-corporate power, and very anti union and anti-socialist.

Similarly, the Republicans had a trifecta of power in the US and what you got were Medicare D, massive deficits, tax breaks for the mega wealthy, uncontested contracts to Haliburton, wars based on lies, undoing Clinton acts, etc...

One thing the Republicans definitely didn't give a crap about was health care reform, or the 47 million uninsured americans.

I'd be okay with tort reform, honestly, about the same time we start limiting the amount of money lawyers can charge.

Hell, if they'd let HR676 pass with tort reform tacked on, I'd still count it as a victory.

Of course, with things standing as they are, we get weak shit healthcare that we get to pay through the nose for. Forced healthcare spending with or without said public "option" is going to result in propping up insurance industry profits. Medicare for all is definitely the way to go. An industry that makes money by denying medical care -- I'm sure there's a special place in hell for all of them.

They've been busy protecting our rights:

Our right to create monopolies and own legislators,

Our right to be excessively profitable to health insurance providers,

Our right to choose between different inadequate health insurance policies because we can foresee future health problems and know how it relates to the amount we can afford,

Our limited right to go bankrupt, suffer illness, or die because we chose the wrong policy coverages, couldn't afford adequate coverage or any coverage, have pre-existing conditions or were denied coverage in order to increase company profits,

Our rights to have and use guns anywhere we want.

Our right to own health insurance companies and be excessively compensated,

Just protecting our rights, because disease and injury occur naturally as acts of God and to have adequate protection from suffering, death and financial destitution is against God's will, who punishes us for our sins by inflicting them on us, unless we are elected by God to have the money to cover the care for the illness and injury he accidentally inflicts on those worthies.

A health-care system that has the intention to provide the best health care for everyone is unnatural, satanic and inflicts loss of profits to those who deserve overweening profits.

Paul C

I think Republicans protect individual rights in the same way that the Civil Ware was about state's rights.

You can argue for either being the case, yet there's a far more foul thing going on underneath. The Republicans are pushing for state and individual rights in an attempt to destroy assistance programs and in effect, force upward motion of wealth. The South wanted to subjugate black people, and wanted the Federal Government's blessing to do it.

Foul crap hiding behind the guise of rights, apparently.

The answer to Greta's question is simple... they couldn't figure out how to create a plan that would make the private health care industry more money than the current one. The people's needs are secondary to corporate profits and if you don't agree with that, you 'hate America'.

dnegri's picture

Check Steele's last response. Dems are avoiding talking about Medicare? First, they're not, but more
important, the entire "Bill of Rights" is nothing more than an attempt to render any serious discussion of Medicare impossible! Why? Because Republicans will frame it immediately as "killing grandma".....
More evidence Republicans are irrelevant to any serious discussion of America's future.

And I get the feeling that even Greta feels it.....

"We raised some concerns and we talked a little bit more about it and laid out clearly what we thought we should be doing." REALLY? THEN SHOW ME THE REPUBLICAN PLAN FOR HEALTH CARE? OH THAT'S RIGHT, THERE ISN'T ONE!!!!!

During Bush's terms the Republicans controlled the House from 2000-2006 (they'd actually taken control in 1994). They took control of the Senate in 2002, and lost it in 2006.

So for four years- 2002 to 2006- the GOP controlled Congress and the White House. This period of complete dominance straddled Bushco's two terms.

The Republican party has spent the last 50 years trying to destroy Medicare and now they expect us to believe they are it's champion? Please.

The Republican's are chronic liars , scum bags with out consciences , they can't tell the truth , they cannot , telling the truth would totally destroy them , they have to lie . It's unbelievable how many absolutely STUPID people there are in this country ... they are thee problem . The ones listening to Fox and supporting the Repugs, the same dumb shits who voted Bush 2 x , are so friggin dumb that you cannot use logic and reason with them , that kind of thought process is simply beyond them . STUPID people are the biggest danger this country has to contend with .

Insanity , it is what it is , there is no understanding it .

Why isn't anyone pointing out that any "Seniors" not on Medicare would be able to use the public option? Seriously! I don't get it! If money is taken out of Medicare to help fund another "Medicare for all," then how do the Seniors get left out? They can simply be on the new Medicare public option. Right?

A resident of the Land of Pleasant Living it struck me when this man Michael Steele was Lieutenant Governor that the ONLY thing he had going for him was his African American origin. Were this poor thing white he'd maybe manage a launderette not the Party of No. The man is a total embarrassment to cognitive thinking.
