'Gasland' Director Josh Fox Arrested for Filming Congressional Hearing
Ed Schultz spoke to "Gasland" director Josh Fox about his arrest this Wednesday while attempting to film a Congressional hearing on hydraulic fracturing.
'Gasland' Journalists Arrested At Hearing By Order Of House Republicans (UPDATES):
In a stunning break with First Amendment policy, House Republicans directed Capitol Hill police to detain a highly regarded documentary crew that was attempting to film a Wednesday hearing on a controversial natural gas procurement practice. Initial reports from sources suggested that an ABC News camera was also prevented from taping the hearing; ABC has since denied that they sent a crew to the hearing.
Josh Fox, director of the Academy Award-nominated documentary "Gasland" was taken into custody by Capitol Hill police this morning, along with his crew, after Republicans objected to their presence, according to Democratic sources present at the hearing. The meeting of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment had been taking place in room 2318 of the Rayburn building.
After showing video of his arrest, Schultz asked Fox to describe what happened.
FOX: Well, I didn't expect to be arrested for documentary film making and journalism on Capitol Hill today. I was prepared for it, but I didn't expect it. I did think they would come to their senses and just let us film the public hearing. We were there covering a very crucial hearing about a case of groundwater contamination in Pavillion, Wyoming, a three and a half year investigation by the EPA where it shows subjects from the first film, Gasland, from Pavillion with groundwater contamination resulting in fifty times the level of benzine in groundwater.
And EPA has pointed in this case that hydraulic fracturing is the likely cause. And what was happening on the Hill today was Republicans have called, in the Science and Space and Technology Committee, a hearing to challenge science. Their panel was made up of gas industry lobbyists. And we were there to expose what I believe is actually a rather ugly and brazen attack on science itself, on what's happening across the country with this hydraulic fracturing and water contamination.
So we were there actually doing our jobs as journalists. I was not interested in disrupting that hearing. I was not charged with disrupting that hearing. I was simply interested in capturing on film in a broadcast quality camera what the Republicans were going to be doing right there, putting the EPA and citizens of Pavillion and everyone across the nation who is complaining of contamination due to hydraulic fracturing on trial. We wanted to make sure people knew that that was happening.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?
Not soon enough!
This "fracking" thing is not going to end well. There is too much evidence that it is screwing things up. How will they fix it? How CAN they fix the screw ups? Mark my words; This is going to end badly for the environment. Very badly.
These criticisms of fracking are going to be spun as an attack on "jobs". I wonder how people will respond to that.
We don't need jobs that cause regular Americans' tap water to catch on fire or get loaded up with carcinogens.
There's the reason Fox was ejected. Like vampires and mirrors, lobbyists feel the same way about vidya cameras.
But Americans seem to like prisons, too, just so long as they're not in their back yards
Property rights vs environmental hazards. Yes, they are fracking on your property, but it's contaminating my water. There is also very good evidence the hazardous chemicals are making their way to agriculture fields. This is even going on in urban areas like the suburbs of Dallas/Ft. Worth. Imagine a gas well in your neighbor's back yard.
Texas legislators have actually reduced restrictions for the natural gas and cement industries. Mainly acceptable uses and levels of lead and mercury. It's a double-edge sword. It does create more jobs, and at the same times kills people in the population opening up other jobs.
But how close do you think any of the politicians live to those areas?
I've seen some stuff, man. And some thangs...
countries to foster a free press and democracy?
I'm picturing, instead of that Iraqui with the purple finger photo Josh Fox with a black one from having been fingerprinted. Nice.
I've seen some stuff, man. And some thangs...
they make such claims (spreadin' democracy), but those are just excuses to do the opposite
After the profit is made, the Gubmint will have to clean it up as in 'Socialize the losses'
This is an example of the perfect Republican world. You put out a narrative about an issue like Fracking: It is completely safe, creates millions of jobs, and does no harm to the environment. Obama should be giving the oil and gas companies medals and parades for saving America. If anyone uses facts and science to show differently just have them arrested and silenced. That said, having him arrested brought more eyeballs to the issue than Josh Fox could have dreamed of.
As bad as the Democratic party is they are a far left compared to these radical Reich wing Republicons , these F'ers are dangerous .
"The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all."
Potable H2O is one of the scarcest resources on Earth. It is essential to human life. We cannot afford to waste or contaminate a single drop.
Water should be treated as an asset that is much more valuable than natural gas. We should err or the side of caution and conservation.
Throwing Josh Fox out is exactly what the Soviets did during the rule of the communist in the USSR. Our nation should be better than that. We can't be better than that until we throw all of the RePugniScums and corporate Democrats out of office.
Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.
Bully's just keep on bullying, until someone smacks them upside the head.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
why wasnt that brietbart fuckhead whats his name arrested for voter fraud? this is simply amazing, in a very bad way. orwell must be spinning
warren mosler for president

Josh Fox got more publicity than he bargained for. This backfired for the Republicans. If they had just let him film, none of us would ever know about this hearing until his film came out and even then, it would have just been a part of the film.
Even my Republican co-worker didnt like this at all. His take is that it is just a few Republicans that do this. I told him that this goes on much more than he realizes. I think his mind is slowly changing as he see's stuff like this.
I grew up there. Have been to Pavillion many times. There's something everyone should remember when talking about this subject:
THEY ALL VOTED TO ALLOW THESE COMPANIES TO DO THIS!
We're talking about one of the most proudly-Republican states in this entire country. Now what is happening is the local people are actually feeling the direct impact, literally, of their voting choices.
I want to feel sorry for them, but according to their philosophy this was all their own fault.
Josh Fox? Duhhhh....

some of the tesitmony below:
.......
Thomas E. Doll: State Oil and Gas Supervisor
Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission
From Mr. Doll's statement to the committee yesterday:
" Other possible sources of groundwater contamination in the Pavillion natural gas field remain unstudied."
"IMPORTANCE to WYOMING: Almost 100% of oil and natural gas wells drilled in Wyoming are hydraulic fracture treated to be commercial".
"CONCLUSION: ..EPA dismissed requests to review data before it was publicized and has not addressed concerns with the data ...report outlining five possible solutions to evaluate potential long term solutions for domestic water supply to landowners in the area. The EPA Pavillion Draft Report contains questionable, unverified poor quality data; state agency experts cannot support the EPA’s analysis and conclusions."
Deny, Delay, Discredit. Deceive. We can bring them clean water (if they sign a non-disclosure agreement?)
Yup, the oil companies(GOP) don't want a HiDef video in which Wyoming’s own State Oil and Gas Supervisor is revealed as an oil company lobbyist. That footage might make it into some left-wing movie.
"Wyoming regulators exempt 146 'fracking' chemicals from public disclosure"
http://billingsgazette.com/news/state-and-reg...
"Wyoming's open records law includes an exemption for trade secrets. Under the state's regulations, companies may request that the Oil and Gas Conservation Commission classify the identity of a chemical used in fracking as a trade secret."
OK, so that tells you where this guy is coming from. There are numerous articles online in which Mr. Doll attacks or dismisses the EPA's findings. Screw the water, give the drillers carte blanc.
........
Kathleen Sgamma: Vice President of Government & Public Affairs
Western Energy Alliance (rep group for big oil)
From Ms. Sgamma's statement to the committee yesterday:
"HF is vital to the supply of American energy. If we lose the public’s confidence and cannot continue to develop oil and natural gas in the United States because of unfounded rumors and invalid science, America will deprive itself of significant job and economic growth, and will continue to import energy from unfriendly nations."
synopsys: the EPA has an agenda (and we better watch 'em), "we don't need outrageous information in the public arena", "unfounded fears pose a threat to fracking", "we can't lose the public’s confidence".."HF is vital", "unfounded rumors and invalid science is going to fund unfriendly nations",.....wait...WHAT??... the effin tree huggers are funding Iran?
Deny, Delay, Discredit. Deceive. seems pretty clear though: polluted drinking water or Shari'a Law.
Bwahahaha...........
"Hydraulic Fracturing: Safe, Reliable and Vital to the Rockies"

“On the one hand, there was reasoned discussion of the ways that states are conscientiously regulating fracking, and why another layer of federal oversight is not necessary. On the other hand, there were those who wish to submit the procedure to another layer of unnecessary federal oversight. Why bring in the federal government to over-regulate a procedure that has been safely managed by states for over sixty years?” -Kathleen Sgamma
OK, she is pretty clear about her position on this one. (we don't need no stinkin' feds)
Wall Street is just a parasite on the actual labor and investments of average Americans.
Banks play with futures, debt paper, complex financial instruments, and other peoples incomes.
Sell 'em short & help 'em crash - Tear 'em apart & sell the pieces
Why can't we see what goes on?
and it will backfire on them. Now they put in the new twice. He still gets the video, just not HiDef.
here is a link to a video of the full hearing, written statements and disclosures of interest for the witnesses.

Funny that. how the Thugs want to hide what they're doing. I object to the republic party members' presence in the chamber myself...
me-oww!
Existing in a public place?
Stealing oxygen?
I'm a little perplexed as to what crime was commited.
"Better." It's what we should ask of ourselves and of our leaders.
The Republicans committed a crime in denying Fox his First Amendment rights, but they were just being the good employees of the oil companies they work for.
When BP can command the US Coast Guard to blockade the waters around their exploded oil rig and deny the US public the chemical breakdown of the oil dispersant they freely spread over US waters without permission, tossing Josh Fox out of a public hearing is a simple matter for
gas company employeesRepublicans.Do they need a reason any more? It seems not.
far left loon >.<
Not if, When they destroy the environment even further, they will not care. The fucking gas companies run this fucked up country.
